We report our studies of the linear and nonlinear rheology of aqueous solutions of the surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium tosylate (CTAT) with varying amounts of sodium chloride (NaCl). The CTAT concentration is fixed at 42 mM, and the salt concentration is varied between 0 and 120 mM. On increasing the salt (NaCl) concentration, we see three distinct regimes in the zero-shear viscosity and the high-frequency plateau modulus data. In regime 1, the zero-shear viscosity shows a weak increase with salt concentration due to enhanced micellar growth. The decrease in the zero-shear viscosities with salt concentration in regimes II and III can be explained in terms of intermicellar branching. The most intriguing feature of our data, however, is the anomalous behavior of the high-frequency plateau modulus in regime II (0.12 less than or equal to [NaCl]/[CTAT] less than or equal to 1.42). In this regime, the plateau modulus increases with an increase in NaCl concentration. This is highly interesting, since the correlation length of concentration fluctuations and hence the plateau modulus G(0) are not expected to change appreciably in the semidilute regime. We propose to explain the changes in regime II in terms of a possible unbinding of the organic counterions (tosylate) from the CTA(+) surfaces on the addition of NaCl. In the nonlinear flow curves of the samples with high salt content, significant deviations from the predictions of the Giesekus model for entangled micelles are observed.

A simple and convenient tandem methodology for the enantiospecific generation of functionalised bicyclo[3.3.1] nonanes 9,14-18, via intermolecular alkylation of Michael donors with 10-bromocarvones 7, 10 and 11, followed by intramolcular Michael addition, is achieved. An unsuccessful attempt for the extension of the methodology for a possible short enantiospecific approach to AB-ring system 22 of taxanes via the allyl bromide 21, is also described.

We have carried out small-angle X-ray diffraction studies on complexes formed by the anionic polyelectrolytes, namely, sodium salts of double and single stranded (ds and ss) DNA, poly( glutamic acid) ( PGA), poly( acrylic acid) (PAA), and poly( styrene sulfonate) (PSS) with a cationic surfactant system consisting of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide ( CTAB) and sodium 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoate (SHN). All complexes have a two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal structure at low SHN concentrations. DNA-CTAB-SHN complexes exhibit a hexagonal to lamellar transition near the SHN concentration at which CTAB-SHN micelles show a cylinder to bilayer transformation. On the other hand, PGA and PAA complexes form a 2D centered rectangular phase at higher SHN concentrations, and PSS complexes show a primitive rectangular structure. These results provide a striking example of polyion specificity in polyelectrolytesurfactant interactions.

Ferrocene-conjugated L-tryptophan (L-Trp) reduced Schiff base (Fc-TrpH) copper(II) complexes [Cu(Fc-Trp)(L)](ClO(4)) of phenanthroline bases (L), viz. 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy in 1), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 2), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 3), and dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 4), were prepared and characterized and their photocytotoxicity studied. Cationic reduced Schiff base (Ph-TrpH) complexes [Cu(Ph-Trp)(L)(H(2)O)] (ClO(4)) (L = phen in 5; dppz in 6) having the ferrocenyl moiety replaced by a phenyl group and the Zn(II) analogue (7) of complex 4 were prepared and used as control species. The crystal structures of 1 and 5 with respective square-planar CuN(3)O and square-pyramidal CuN(3)O(2) coordination geometry show significantly different core structures. Complexes 1-4 exhibit a Cu(II)-Cu(I) redox couple near -0.1 V and the Fc(+)-Fc couple at similar to 0.5 V vs SCE in DMF-0.1 M [Bu(4)(n)N] (ClO(4)) (Fc = ferrocenyl moiety). The complexes display a copper(II)-based d-d band near 600 nm and a Fc-centered band at similar to 450 nm in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes are efficient binders to calf thymus DNA. They are synthetic chemical nucleases in the presence of thiol or H(2)O(2), forming hydroxyl radicals. The photoactive complexes are cleavers of pUC19 DNA in visible light, forming hydroxyl radicals. Complexes 2-6 show photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells, giving IC(50) values of 4.7, 10.2, 1.3, 4.8, and 4.3 mu M, respectively, in visible light with the appearance of apoptotic bodies. The complexes also show photocytotoxicity in MCF-7 cancer cells. Nuclear chromatin cleavage has been observed with acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) dual staining with complex 4 in visible light. The complexes induce caspase-independent apoptosis in the HeLa cells.

A cationic amphiphile, cholest-5en-3 beta-oxyethyl pyridinium bromide (PY(+)-Chol), is able to efficiently disperse exfoliated graphene (GR) in water by the physical adsorption of PY(+)-Chol on the surface of GR to form stable, dark aqueous suspensions at room temperature. The GRPY(+)-Chol suspension can then be used to solubilize Tamoxifen Citrate (TmC), a breast cancer drug, in water. The resulting TmCGRPY(+)-Chol is stable for a long time without any precipitation. Fluorescence emission and UV absorption spectra indicate the existence of noncovalent interactions between TmC, GR, and PY(+)-Chol in these suspensions. Electron microscopy shows the existence of segregated GR sheets and TmC ribbons in the composite suspensions. Atomic force microscopy indicates the presence of extended structures of GRPY(+)-Chol, which grows wider in the presence of TmC. The slow time-dependent release of TmC is noticed in a reconstituted cell culture medium, a property useful as a drug carrier. TmCGRPY(+)-Chol selectively enhanced the cell death (apoptosis) of the transformed cancer cells compared to normal cells. This potency is found to be true for a wide range of transformed cancer cells viz. HeLa, A549, ras oncogene-transformed NIH3T3, HepG2, MDA-MB231, MCF-7, and HEK293T compared to the normal cell HEK293 in vitro. Confocal microscopy confirmed the high efficiency of TmCGRPY(+)-Chol in delivering the drug to the cells, compared to the suspensions devoid of GR.

Methods which disperse single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in water as `debundled', while maintaining their unique physical properties are highly useful. We present here a family of cationic cholesterol compounds (Chol(+)) {Cholest-5en-3 beta-oxyethyl pyridinium bromide (Chol-PB+), Cholest-5en-3 beta-oxyethyl N-methyl pyrrolidinium bromide (Chol-MPB+), Cholest-5en-3 beta-oxyethyl N-methyl morpholinium bromide (Chol-MMB+) and Cholest-5en-3 beta-oxyethyl diazabicyclo octanium bromide (Chol-DOB+)}. Each of these could be easily dispersed in water. The resulting cationic cholesterol (Chol(+)) suspensions solubilized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by the non-specific physical adsorption of Chol(+) to form stable, transparent, dark aqueous suspensions at room temperature. Electron microscopy reveals the existence of highly segregated CNTs in these samples. Zeta potential measurements showed an increase in potential of cationic cholesterol aggregates on addition of CNTs. The CNT-Chol(+) suspensions were capable of forming stable complexes with genes (DNA) efficiently. The release of double-helical DNA from such CNT-Chol(+) complexes could be induced upon the addition of anionic micellar solution of SDS. Furthermore, the CNT-based DNA complexes containing cationic cholesterol aggregates showed higher stability in fetal bovine serum media at physiological conditions. Confocal studies confirm that CNT-Chol(+) formulations adhere to HeLa cell surfaces and get internalized more efficiently than the cationic cholesterol suspensions alone (devoid of any CNTs). These cationic cholesterol-CNT suspensions therefore appear to be a promising system for further use in biological applications.

In this article, we report the mechanical and biocompatibility properties of injection-molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites reinforced with 40 wt % ceramic filler [hydroxyapatite (HA) and/or Al2O3] and 2 wt % titanate as a coupling agent. The mechanical property measurements revealed that a combination of a maximum tensile strength of 18.7 MPa and a maximum tensile modulus of about 855 MPa could be achieved with the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. For the same composite composition, the maximum compression strength was determined to be 71.6 MPa and the compression modulus was about 660 MPa. The fractrography study revealed the uniform distribution of ceramic fillers in the semicrystalline HDPE matrix. The cytocompatibility study with osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells confirmed extensive cell adhesion and proliferation on the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. The cell viability analysis with the 3(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay revealed a statistically significant difference between the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites and sintered HA for various culture durations of upto 7 days. The difference in cytocompatibility properties among the biocomposites is explained in terms of the difference in the protein absorption behavior. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present study, we have tested the cytotoxic and DNA damage activity of two novel bis-1,2,4 triazole derivatives, namely 1,4-bis[5-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl-methyl)-thio4-(p-tolyl)-1,2 ,4-triazol-3-yl]-butane (MNP-14) and 1,4-bis[5-(carbethoxy-methyl)-thio-4-(p-ethoxy phenyl) -1,2,4-triazol-3-yl]-butane (MNP-16). The effect of these molecules on cellular apoptosis was also determined. The in-vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated by a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay as well as Trypan blue dye exclusion methods against human acute lymphoblastic leukemia (MOLT4) and lung cancer cells (A549). Our results showed that MNP-16 induced significant cytotoxicity (IC50 of 3-5 mu M) compared with MNP-14. The cytotoxicity induced by MNP-16 was time and concentration dependent. The cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry (fluorescence-activated cell sorting [FACS]) revealed that though there was a significant increase in the apoptotic population (sub-G1 phase) with an increased concentration of MNP-14 and 16, there was no cell cycle arrest. Further, the comet assay results indicated considerable DNA

Organo-clay was prepared by incorporating different amounts (in terms of CEC, ranging from 134-840 mg of quaternary ammonium cation (QACs) such as hexadecytrimethylammonium bromide (C19H42N]Br) into the montmorillonite clay. Prepared organo-clays are characterized by CHN analyser and XRD to measure the amount of elemental content and interlayer spacing of surfactant modified clay. The batch experiments of sorption of permanganate from aqueous media by organo-clays was studied at different acidic strengths (pH 1-7). The experimental results show that the rate and amount of adsorption of permanganate was higher at lower pH compared to raw montmorillonite. Laboratory fixed bed experiments were conducted to evaluate the breakthrough time and nature of breakthrough curves. The shape of the breakthrough curves shows that the initial cationic surfactant loadings at 1.0 CEC of the clay is enough to enter the permanganate ions in to the interlamellar region of the surfactant modified smectile clays. These fixed bed studies were also applied to quantify the effect of bed-depth and breakthrough time during the uptake of permanganate. Calculation of thermodynamic parameters shows that the sorption of permanganate is spontaneous and follows the first order kinetics.

Cationic surfactants such as dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimehtylammonium bromide (TTAB) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB); and anionic surfactants such as sodium decyl sulphate (SDeS), sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and sodium tetradecyl sulphate (STDS) have been used to determine their solubility and micellization in ternary eutectic melt (acetamide + urea + ammonium nitrate) at 50 degrees C. We employed the electrical conductivity and the surface tension measurement techniques to determine the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The deviation in the slope of the specific conductance/surface tension against surfactant concentration plots indicated the aggregations of surfactants and hence, their CMC. CMC decreases with increase of alkyl chain length due to the increased van der Waals forces. The calculated increment in Gibb's energy per methylene group for cationic and anionic surfactants is about -6 kJ mol(-1) and -4 kJ mol(-1) respectively. It is found that, the CMCs of the surfactants in the ternary melt are higher than the CMCs of same surfactants in water (similar to 25 degrees C). (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Zn-CeO 2 composite coatings through electrodeposition technique were successfully fabricated on mild steel substrate. As a comparison pure zinc coating was also prepared. The concentration of CeO 2 nanoparticles was varied in the electrolytic bath and the composites were electrodeposited both in the presence and absence of cetyltriammonium bromide (CTAB). The performance of the CeO 2 nanoparticles towards the deposition, crystal structure, texture, surface morphology and electrochemical corrosion behavior was studied. For characterizations of the electrodeposits, the techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used. Both the additives ceria and surfactant polarize the reduction processes and thus influence the deposition process, surface nature and the electrochemical properties. The electrochemical experiments like potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) studies carried out in 3.5 wt. A cationic monomer 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride was polymerized using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the crosslinker to obtain a cationic superabsorbent polymer (SAP). This SAP was characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, and the equilibrium swelling capacity was determined by swelling in water. The SAP was subjected to cyclic swelling/deswelling in water and NaCl solution. The conductivity of the swelling medium was monitored during the swelling/deswelling and was related to the swelling/deswelling characteristics of the SAP. The adsorption of five anionic dyes of different classes on the SAP was carried out and was found to follow the first-order kinetics. The Langmuir adsorption isotherms were found to fit the equilibrium adsorption data. The dye adsorption capacity of the SAP synthesized in this study was higher than that obtained for other hydrogels reported in the literature. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. New ternary copper (II) complexes, Cu(L-orn)(B)(Cl)](Cl center dot 2H(2)O) (1-2) where L-orn is L-ornithine, B is an N,N-donor heterocyclic base, viz. 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 1) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 2), were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Complex 2 is characterized by the X-ray single crystallographic method. The complex shows a distorted square-pyramidal (4 + 1) CuN3OCl coordination sphere. Binding interactions of the complexes with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) were investigated by UV-Vis absorption titration, ethidium bromide displacement assay, viscometric titration experiment and DNA melting studies. Complex 2 shows appreciable chemical nuclease activity in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA). The complexes were subjected to in vitro cytotoxicity studies against carcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A-549) and human epithelial (HEp-2) cells. The IC50 values of 1 and 2 are less than that of cisplatin against HEp-2 cell lines. MIC values for 1 against the bacterial strains Streptococcus mutans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are 0.5 mM. Nanocomposite solid polymer electrolytes (NCSPEs) with conducting species other than Li ions are being investigated for solid-state battery applications. Pristine solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) do not show ionic conductivity suitable for batteries. Addition of inert fillers to SPEs is known to enhance the ionic conductivity. In this paper, we present the role of silica nanoparticles in enhancing the ionic conductivity in NCSPEs with sodium as conducting species. Sodium bromide is complexed with the host polyethylene glycol polymer by solution cast method and silica nanoparticles (SiO2, average particle size 7 nm) are incorporated into the complex in small amounts. The composites are characterized by powder XRD and IR spectroscopy. Conductivity measurements are undertaken as a function of concentration of salt and also as a function of temperature using impedance spectroscopy. Addition of silica nanoparticles shows an enhancement in conductivity by 1-2 orders of magnitude. The results are discussed in terms of interaction of nanoparticles with the nonconducting anions.
