Particle filters find important applications in the problems of state and parameter estimations of dynamical systems of engineering interest. Since a typical filtering algorithm involves Monte Carlo simulations of the process equations, sample variance of the estimator is inversely proportional to the number of particles. The sample variance may be reduced if one uses a Rao-Blackwell marginalization of states and performs analytical computations as much as possible. In this work, we propose a semi-analytical particle filter, requiring no Rao-Blackwell marginalization, for state and parameter estimations of nonlinear dynamical systems with additively Gaussian process/observation noises. Through local linearizations of the nonlinear drift fields in the process/observation equations via explicit Ito-Taylor expansions, the given nonlinear system is transformed into an ensemble of locally linearized systems. Using the most recent observation, conditionally Gaussian posterior density functions of the linearized systems are analytically obtained through the Kalman filter. This information is further exploited within the particle filter algorithm for obtaining samples from the optimal posterior density of the states. The potential of the method in state/parameter estimations is demonstrated through numerical illustrations for a few nonlinear oscillators. The proposed filter is found to yield estimates with reduced sample variance and improved accuracy vis-a-vis results from a form of sequential importance sampling filter.

Gravity critical speeds of rotors have hitherto been studied using linear analysis, and ascribed to rotor stiffness asymmetry. Here, we study an idealized asymmetric nonlinear overhung rotor model of Crandall and Brosens, spinning close to its gravity critical speed.Nonlinearities arise from finite displacements, and the rotor's staticlateral deflection under gravity is taken as small. Assuming small asymmetry and damping, slow modulations of whirl amplitudes are studied using the method of multiple scales. Inertia asymmetry appears only at second order. More interestingly, even without stiffness asymmetry, the gravity-induced resonance survives through geometric nonlinearities. The gravity resonant forcing does not influence the resonant mode at leading order, unlike the typical resonant oscillations. Nevertheless, the usual phenomena of resonances, namely saddle-node bifurcations, jump phenomena and hysteresis, are all observed. An unanticipated periodic solution branch is found. In the three-dimensional space oftwo modal coefficients and a detuning parameter, the full set of periodic solutions is found to be an imperfect version of three mutually intersecting curves: a straight line,a parabola and an ellipse.

We present experimental validation of a new reconstruction method for off-axis digital holographic microscopy (DHM). This method effectively suppresses the object autocorrelation, namely, the zero-order term, from holographic data, thereby improving the reconstruction bandwidth of complex wavefronts. The algorithm is based on nonlinear filtering and can be applied to standard DHM setups with realistic recording conditions. We study the robustness of the technique under different experimental configurations, and quantitatively demonstrate its enhancement capabilities on phase signals.

This paper represents the effect of nonlocal scale parameter on the wave propagation in multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Each wall of the MWCNT is modeled as first order shear deformation beams and the van der Waals interactions between the walls are modeled as distributed springs. The studies shows that the scale parameter introduces certain band gap region in both flexural and shear wave mode where no wave propagation occurs. This is manifested in the wavenumber plots as the region where the wavenumber tends to infinite (or group speed tends to zero). The frequency at which this phenomenon occurs is called the ``Escape frequency''. The analysis shows that, for a given N-walled carbon nanotube (CNT). the nonlocal scaling parameter has a significant effect on the shear wave modes of the N - 1 walls. The escape frequencies of the flexural and shear wave modes of the N-walls are inversely proportionl to the nonlocal scaling parameter. It is also shown that the cut-off frequencies are independent of the nonlocal scale parameter. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We propose a self-regularized pseudo-time marching scheme to solve the ill-posed, nonlinear inverse problem associated with diffuse propagation of coherent light in a tissuelike object. In particular, in the context of diffuse correlation tomography (DCT), we consider the recovery of mechanical property distributions from partial and noisy boundary measurements of light intensity autocorrelation. We prove the existence of a minimizer for the Newton algorithm after establishing the existence of weak solutions for the forward equation of light amplitude autocorrelation and its Frechet derivative and adjoint. The asymptotic stability of the solution of the ordinary differential equation obtained through the introduction of the pseudo-time is also analyzed. We show that the asymptotic solution obtained through the pseudo-time marching converges to that optimal solution provided the Hessian of the forward equation is positive definite in the neighborhood of optimal solution. The superior noise tolerance and regularization-insensitive nature of pseudo-dynamic strategy are proved through numerical simulations in the context of both DCT and diffuse optical tomography. We study resonant nonlinear magneto-optic rotation (NMOR) in a paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell as the magnetic field is swept. At low sweep rates, the nonlinear rotation appears as a narrow resonance signal with a linewidth of about ``300 mu G''(2 pi x 420 Hz). At high sweep rates, the signal shows transient response with an oscillatory decay. The decay time constant is of order 100 ms. The behavior is different for transitions starting from the lower or the upper hyperfine level of the ground state because of optical pumping effects.

A nonlinear suboptimal guidance scheme is developed for the reentry phase of the reusable launch vehicles. A recently developed methodology, named as model predictive static programming (MPSP), is implemented which combines the philosophies of nonlinear model predictive control theory and approximate dynamic programming. This technique provides a finite time nonlinear suboptimal guidance law which leads to a rapid solution of the guidance history update. It does not have to suffer from computational difficulties and can be implemented online. The system dynamics is propagated through the flight corridor to the end of the reentry phase considering energy as independent variable and angle of attack as the active control variable. All the terminal constraints are satisfied. Among the path constraints, the normal load is found to be very constrictive. Hence, an extra effort has been made to keep the normal load within a specified limit and monitoring its sensitivity to the perturbation.

This paper presents a formulation of an approximate spectral element for uniform and tapered rotating Euler-Bernoulli beams. The formulation takes into account the varying centrifugal force, mass and bending stiffness. The dynamic stiffness matrix is constructed using the weak form of the governing differential equation in the frequency domain, where two different interpolating functions for the transverse displacement are used for the element formulation. Both free vibration and wave propagation analysis is performed using the formulated elements. The studies show that the formulated element predicts results, that compare well with the solution available in the literature, at a fraction of the computational effort. In addition, for wave propagation analysis, the element shows superior convergence. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Wave propagation and its frequency bandgaps in a parametrically modulated composite laminate are reported in this paper. The modulated properties under considerations are due to periodic microstructure, for example honeycomb core sandwich composite, which can be parameterized and homogenized in a suitable scale. Wave equations are derived by assuming a third-order shear deformation theory. Homogenization of the wave equations is carried out in the scale of wavelength. In-plane wave and flexural-shear wave dispersions are obtained for a range of values of a stiffness modulation coefficient (alpha). A clear pattern of stop-bands is observed for alpha >= 4. To validate the band-gap phenomena, we take recourse to time domain response obtained from finite element simulation. As predicted by the proposed analytical technique, a distinct correlation between the chosen frequency band and the simulated wave arrival time and amplitude reduction is found. This promises practical applications of the proposed analytical technique to designing parametrically modulated composite laminate for wave suppression. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the surface laser damage threshold in sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate, a nonlinear optical crystal. The experiment is performed with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser in TEM00 mode. The single shot damage thresholds are 11.16 +/- 0.28GWcm(-2) and 1.25 +/- 0.02GWcm(-2) for 1064 nm and 532 nm laser wavelengths respectively. A close correlation between the laser damage threshold and mechanical hardness is observed. A possible mechanism of laser damage is discussed.

In this paper a nonlinear optimal controller has been designed for aerodynamic control during the reentry phase of the Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV). The controller has been designed based on a recently developed technique Optimal Dynamic Inversion (ODI). For full state feedback the controller has required full information about the system states. In this work an Extended Kalman filter (EKF) is developed to estimate the states. The vehicle (RLV) has been has been consider as a nonlinear Six-Degree-Of-Freedom (6-DOF) model. The simulation results shows that EKF gives a very good estimation of the states and it is working well with ODI. The resultant trajectories are very similar to those obtained by perfect state feedback using ODI only.

The problem of identifying parameters of nonlinear vibrating systems using spatially incomplete, noisy, time-domain measurements is considered. The problem is formulated within the framework of dynamic state estimation formalisms that employ particle filters. The parameters of the system, which are to be identified, are treated as a set of random variables with finite number of discrete states. The study develops a procedure that combines a bank of self-learning particle filters with a global iteration strategy to estimate the probability distribution of the system parameters to be identified. Individual particle filters are based on the sequential importance sampling filter algorithm that is readily available in the existing literature. The paper develops the requisite recursive formulary for evaluating the evolution of weights associated with system parameter states. The correctness of the formulations developed is demonstrated first by applying the proposed procedure to a few linear vibrating systems for which an alternative solution using adaptive Kalman filter method is possible. Subsequently, illustrative examples on three nonlinear vibrating systems, using synthetic vibration data, are presented to reveal the correct functioning of the method. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. A method of testing for parametric faults of analog circuits based on a polynomial representation of fault-free function of the circuit is presented. The response of the circuit under test (CUT) is estimated as a polynomial in the applied input voltage at relevant frequencies in addition to DC. Classification or Cur is based on a comparison of the estimated polynomial coefficients with those of the fault free circuit. This testing method requires no design for test hardware as might be added to the circuit fly some other methods. The proposed method is illustrated for a benchmark elliptic filter. It is shown to uncover several parametric faults causing deviations as small as 5% from the nominal values.
The partition of unity finite element method for elastic wave propagation in Reissner-Mindlin plates
Resumo:
This paper reports a numerical method for modelling the elastic wave propagation in plates. The method is based on the partition of unity approach, in which the approximate spectral properties of the infinite dimensional system are embedded within the space of a conventional finite element method through a consistent technique of waveform enrichment. The technique is general, such that it can be applied to the Lagrangian family of finite elements with specific waveform enrichment schemes, depending on the dominant modes of wave propagation in the physical system. A four-noded element for the Reissner-indlin plate is derived in this paper, which is free of shear locking. Such a locking-free property is achieved by removing the transverse displacement degrees of freedom from the element nodal variables and by recovering the same through a line integral and a weak constraint in the frequency domain. As a result, the frequency-dependent stiffness matrix and the mass matrix are obtained, which capture the higher frequency response with even coarse meshes, accurately. The steps involved in the numerical implementation of such element are discussed in details. Numerical studies on the performance of the proposed element are reported by considering a number of cases, which show very good accuracy and low computational cost. The significance of treating rainfall as a chaotic system instead of a stochastic system for a better understanding of the underlying dynamics has been taken up by various studies recently. However, an important limitation of all these approaches is the dependence on a single method for identifying the chaotic nature and the parameters involved. Many of these approaches aim at only analyzing the chaotic nature and not its prediction. In the present study, an attempt is made to identify chaos using various techniques and prediction is also done by generating ensembles in order to quantify the uncertainty involved. Daily rainfall data of three regions with contrasting characteristics (mainly in the spatial area covered), Malaprabha, Mahanadi and All-India for the period 1955-2000 are used for the study. Auto-correlation and mutual information methods are used to determine the delay time for the phase space reconstruction. Optimum embedding dimension is determined using correlation dimension, false nearest neighbour algorithm and also nonlinear prediction methods. The low embedding dimensions obtained from these methods indicate the existence of low dimensional chaos in the three rainfall series. Correlation dimension method is done on th phase randomized and first derivative of the data series to check whether the saturation of the dimension is due to the inherent linear correlation structure or due to low dimensional dynamics. Positive Lyapunov exponents obtained prove the exponential divergence of the trajectories and hence the unpredictability. Surrogate data test is also done to further confirm the nonlinear structure of the rainfall series. A range of plausible parameters is used for generating an ensemble of predictions of rainfall for each year separately for the period 1996-2000 using the data till the preceding year. For analyzing the sensitiveness to initial conditions, predictions are done from two different months in a year viz., from the beginning of January and June. The reasonably good predictions obtained indicate the efficiency of the nonlinear prediction method for predicting the rainfall series. Also, the rank probability skill score and the rank histograms show that the ensembles generated are reliable with a good spread and skill. A comparison of results of the three regions indicates that although they are chaotic in nature, the spatial averaging over a large area can increase the dimension and improve the predictability, thus destroying the chaotic nature.
