Barium zirconium titanate [Ba(Zr0.05Ti0.95)O3, BZT] thin films were prepared by pulsed laser ablation technique and dc leakage current conduction behavior was extensively studied. The dc leakage behavior study is essential, as it leads to degradation of the data storage devices. The current-voltage (I-V) of the thin films showed an Ohmic behavior for the electric field strength lower than 7.5 MV/m. Nonlinearity in the current density-voltage (J-V) behavior has been observed at an electric field above 7.5 MV/m. Different conduction mechanisms have been thought to be responsible for the overall I-V characteristics of BZT thin films. The J-V behavior of BZT thin films was found to follow Lampert’s theory of space charge limited conduction similar to what is observed in an insulator with charge trapping moiety. The Ohmic and trap filled limited regions have been explicitly observed in the J-V curves, where the saturation prevailed after a voltage of 6.5 V referring the onset of a trap-free square region. Two different activation energy values of 1.155 and 0.325 eV corresponding to two different regions have been observed in the Arrhenius plot, which was attributed to two different types of trap levels present in the film, namely, deep and shallow traps.

Homogeneous thin films of Sr(0.6)Ca(0.4)TiO(3) (SCT40) and asymmetric multilayer of SrTiO(3) (STO) and CaTiO(3) (CTO) were fabricated on Pt/Ti/SiO(2)/Si substrates by using pulsed laser deposition technique. The electrical behavior of films was observed within a temperature range of 153 K-373 K. A feeble dielectric peak of SCT40 thin film at 273 K is justified as paraelectric to antiferroelectric phase transition. Moreover, the Curie-Weiss temperature, determined from the epsilon'(T) data above the transition temperature is found to be negative. Using Landau theory, the negative Curie-Weiss temperature is interpreted in terms of an antiferroelectric transition. The asymmetric multilayer exhibits a broad dielectric peak at 273 K. and is attributed to interdiffusion at several interfaces of multilayer. The average dielectric constants for homogeneous Sr(0.6)Ca(0.4)TiO(3) films (similar to 650) and asymmetric multilayered films (similar to 350) at room temperature are recognized as a consequence of grain size effect. Small frequency dispersion in the real part of the dielectric constants and relatively low dielectric losses for both cases ensure high quality of the films applicable for next generation integrated devices. Thin films of (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 - xPbTiO(3) (x = 0.1 to 0.3)(PMN-PT) were deposited on the platinum coated silicon substrate by pulsed excimer laser ablation technique. A template layer of LaSr0.5Co0.5O3 (LSCO) was deposited on platinum substrate prior to the deposition of PMN-PT thin films. The composition and the structure of the films were modulated via proper variation of the deposition parameter such as substrate temperature, laser fluence and thickness of the template layers. We observed the impact of the thickness of LSCO template layer on the orientation of the films. A room temperature dielectric constant varying from 2000 to 4500 was noted for different composition of the films. The dielectric properties of the films were studied over the frequency range of 100 Hz - 100 kHz over a wide range of temperatures. The films exhibited the relaxor- type behavior that was characterized by the frequency dispersion of the temperature of dielectric constant maxima (T-m) and also diffuse phase transition. ZnO/Si heterojunctions were fabricated by growing ZnO thin films on p-type Si (100) substrate by pulsed laser deposition without buffer layers. The crystallinity of the heterojunction was analyzed by high resolution X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The optical quality of the film was analyzed by room temperature (RT) photoluminescence measurements. The high intense band to band emission confirmed the high quality of the ZnO thin films on Si. The electrical properties of the junction were studied by temperature dependent current-voltage measurements and RT capacitance-voltage (C-V) analysis. The charge carrier concentration and the barrier height (BH) were calculated, to be 5.6x10(19) cm(-3) and 0.6 eV respectively from the C-V plot. The BH and ideality factor, calculated using the thermionic emission (TE) model, were found to be highly temperature dependent. We observed a much lower value in Richardson constant, 5.19x10(-7)A/cm(2) K-2 than the theoretical value (32 A/cm(2) K-2) for ZnO. This analysis revealed the existence of a Gaussian distribution (GD) with a standard deviation of sigma(2)=0.035 V. By implementing the GD to the TE, the values of BH and Richardson constant were obtained as 1.3 eV and 39.97 A/cm(2) K-2 respectively from the modified Richardson plot. The obtained Richardson constant value is close to the theoretical value for n-ZnO. These high quality heterojunctions can be used for solar cell applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. In the recent past conventional Spin Valve (SV) structures are gaining growing interest over Tunneling Magneto-resistance (TMR) because of its preference due to low RA product in hard disc read head sensor applications. Pulsed Laser Deposited (PLD) SV and Pseudo Spin Valve (PSV) samples are grown at room temperature with moderately high MR values using simple FM/NM/FM/AFM structure. Although PLD is not a popular technique to grow metallic SVs because of expected large intermixing of the interfaces, particulate formation, still by suitably adjusting the deposition parameters we could get exchange bias (EB) as well as 2-3% MR of these SVs in the Current In Plane (CIP) geometry. Exchange Bias, which sets in even without applying magnetic field during deposition observed by using SQUID magnetometry as well as by MR measurements. Angular variation of the MR reveals four-fold anisotropy of the hard layer (Co) which becomes two-fold in presence of an adjacent AFM layer.

Many of the conducting polymers though having good material property are not solution processable. Hence an alternate method of fabrication of film by pulsed laser deposition, was explored in this work. PDTCPA, a donor-acceptor-donor type of polymer having absorption from 900 nm to 300 nm was deposited by both UV and IR laser to understand the effect of deposition parameters on the film quality. It was observed that the laser ablation of PDTCPA doesn't alter its chemical structure hence retaining the chemical integrity of the polymer. Microscopic studies of the ablated film shows that the IR laser ablated films were particulate in nature while UV laser ablated films are deposited as smooth continuous layer. The morphology of the film influences its electrical characteristics as current-voltage characteristic of these films shows that films deposited by UV laser are p rectifying while those by IR laser are more of resistor in nature.

The electrocaloric effect (ECE) of 0.85PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3-)0.15PbTiO(3) (0.85PMN-0.15PT) thin films deposited on (111) Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been calculated. The reversible adiabatic temperature was calculated indirectly using the Maxwell's relation Delta T = -T/C rho integral(E2)(E1) (partial derivative P/partial derivative T)(sigma,E)dE. Permittivity and P-E measurements show an anomaly at 11 degrees C on heating only. This anomaly previously reported are claimed to arise due to the PNR depolarization upon heating. The absence of this anomaly during cooling suggests that no structural phase transition takes place. A negative electrocaloric effect is observed which is explained by the increase in the entropy term.

The primary purpose of the present work was to illustrate whether cell proliferation can be enhanced on electroactive bioceramic composite, when the cells are cultured in the presence of external electrical stimulation. The two different aspects of the influence of electric field (E-field) application toward stimulating the growth/proliferation of bone/connective tissue cells in vitro, (a) intermittent delivery of extremely low strength pulsed electrical stimulation (0.5-4V/cm, 400s DC pulse) and (b) surface charge generated by electrical poling (10kV/cm) of hydroxyapatite (HA)-BaTiO3 piezobiocomposite have been demonstrated. The experimental results establish that the cell growth can be enhanced using the new culture protocol of the intermittent delivery of electrical pulses within a narrow range of stimulation parameters. The optimal E-field strength for enhanced cellular response for mouse fibroblast L929 and osteogenic cells is in the range of 0.5-1V/cm. The MTT 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] assay results suggested the increased viability of E-field treated cells over 7d in culture, implicating the positive impact of electrical pulses on proliferation behavior. The alizarin red assay results showed noticeable increase in Ca-deposition on the E-field treated samples in comparison to their untreated counterparts. The negatively charged surfaces of developed piezocomposite stimulated the cell growth in a statistically noticeable manner as compared with the uncharged or positively charged surfaces of similar composition.

We report here the growth of epitaxial Co metal thin film on c-plane sapphire by pulsed laser deposition (RD) using Co:ZnO target utilizing the composition inhomogeneity of the corresponding plasma. Two distinct plasma composition regions have been observed using heavily alloyed Co0.6Zn0.4O target. The central and intense region of the plasma grows Co:ZnO film; the extreme tail grows only Co metal with no trace of either ZnO or Co oxide In between the two extremes, mixed phases (Co +Co-oxides +Co:ZnO) were observed. The Co metal thin film grown in this way shows room temperature ferromagnetism with large in plane magnetization similar to 1288 emu cm(-3) and a coerciviLy of similar to 230 Oe with applied field parallel to the film-substrate interface. Carrier density of the film is similar to 10(22) cm(-3). The film is epiLaxial single phase Co metal which is confirmed by both X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy characierizaLions. Planar Hall Effect (PHE) and Magneto Optic Kerr Effect (MOKE) measurements confirm that the film possesses similar attributes of Co metal. The result shows that the epiLaxial Co metal thin film can be grown from its oxides in the PLD. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements are employed to evaluate the presence of the two magnon scattering contribution in the magnetic relaxation processes of the epitaxial nickel zinc ferrite thin films deposited using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on the (0 0 1) MgAl2O4 substrate. Furthermore, the reciprocal space mapping reveals the presence of microstructural defects which acts as an origin for the two magnon scattering process in this thin film. The relevance of this scattering process is further discussed for understanding the higher FMR linewidth in the in-plane configuration compared to the out-of-plane configuration. FMR measurements also reveal the presence of competing uniaxial and cubic anisotropy in the studied films.

The photo-induced effects of Ge12Sb25S63 films illuminated with 532 nm laser light are investigated from transmission spectra measured by FTIR spectroscopy. The material exhibits photo-bleaching (PB) when exposed to band gap light for a prolonged time in a vacuum. The PB is ascribed to structural changes inside the film as well as surface photooxidation. The amorphous nature of thin films was detected by x-ray diffraction. The chemical composition of the deposited thin films was examined by energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDAX). The refractive indices of the films were obtained from the transmission spectra based on an inverse synthesis method and the optical band gaps were derived from optical absorption spectra using the Tauc plot. The dispersion of the refractive index is discussed in terms of the single-oscillator Wemple-DiDomenico model. It was found that the mechanism of the optical absorption follows the rule of the allowed non-direct transition. Raman and x-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were measured and decomposed into several peaks that correspond to the different structural units which support the optical changes.

The solidification behaviour is described of two pure metals (Bi and Ni) and two eutectic alloys (A1-Ge and AI-Cu) under nonequilibrium conditions, in particular the microsecond pulsed laser surface melting. The resolidification behaviour of bismuth shows that epitaxial regrowth is the dominant mechanism. For mixed grain size, regrowth of larger grains dominates the microstructure and can result in the development of texture. In the case of nickel, epitaxial growth has been noted. For lower energy pulse-melted pool, grain refinement takes place, indicating nucleation of fresh nickel grains. The A1-Ge eutectic alloy indicates the nucleation and columnar growth of a metastable monoclinic phase from the melt-substrate interface at a high power density laser irradiation. An equiaxed microstructure containing the same monoclinic phase is obtained at a lower power density laser irradiation. It is shown that the requirement of solution partition acts as a barrier to eutectic regrowth from the substrate. The laser-melted pool of A1-Cu eutectic alloy includes columnar growth of c~-A1 and 0-A12Cu phase followed by the dendritic growth of A12Cu phase with ct-Al forming at the interdendritic space. In addition, a banded microstructure was observed in the resolidified laser-melted pool.

Permalloy (NiFeMo) nanoparticles were fabricated by laser ablation of bulk material in water with a UV pulsed laser. Transmission electron microscope images showed that approximately spherical particles about 50 nm in diameter were formed in the ablation process. All diffraction peaks corresponding to the bulk material were present in the nanoparticles. In addition to these peaks several new peaks were observed in the nanoparticles, which were attributed to nickel oxide.

A systematic study of Ar ion implantation in cupric oxide films has been reported. Oriented CuO films were deposited by pulsed excimer laser ablation technique on (1 0 0) YSZ substrates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra showed the highly oriented nature of the deposited CuO films. The films were subjected to ion bombardment for studies of damage formation, Implantations were carried out using 100 keV Arf over a dose range between 5 x 10(12) and 5 x 10(15) ions/cm(2). The as-deposited and ion beam processed samples were characterized by XRD technique and resistance versus temperature (R-T) measurements. The activation energies for electrical conduction were found from In [R] versus 1/T curves. Defects play an important role in the conduction mechanism in the implanted samples. The conductivity of the film increases, and the corresponding activation energy decreases with respect to the dose value.

Laser surface cladding was carried out on a creep-resistant MRI 153M magnesium alloy with a mixture of Al and Al2O3 powders using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser at scan speeds of 21, 42, 63 and 84 mm/s. The Al2O3 particles partially or completely melted during laser irradiation and re-solidified with irregular shapes in the size range of 5–60 µm along with a few islands as large as 500 µm, within the grain-refined Mg-rich dendritic matrix. More than an order of magnitude improvement in wear resistance after cladding was attributed to the presence of ultra-hard Al2O3 particles, increased solid solubility of Al and other alloying elements, and a very fine dendritic microstructure as a result of rapid solidification in the cladded layer. However, corrosion resistance of the laser cladded alloy was reduced by almost an order of magnitude compared to that of the as-cast alloy mainly due to the presence of cracks and pores in the cladded layer.
