The structural changes occurring during warm working of Cd-1.5 pct Zn alloy and their effect on the subsequent mechanical properties are studied. It is observed that changes in grain size and preferred orientation are important to a large extent in controlling the mechanical strength. The Hall-Petch slope,R decreases in the warm worked material while the friction stress, σo increases. The lowerR values are attributed to the development of a (101l) texture and the higher σo values are interpreted on the basis of changes in the basal texture.

Introduction Dicalcium strontium propionate (DCSP) undergoes a ferroelectric phase transition at about 28 1.5 K, with the spontaneous polarization occurring along the tetragonal C-axis.1 Takashige et al.2,3 have recently reported ferroelectricity in annealed samples of dicalcium lead propionate (DCLP) in the range 191 K to 331 K. The removal of the inner biasing field by annealing has been known in the case of DCLP3 and DCSP.4 Because of the possible dependence of the inner biasing field on the particle size, a study of the temperature dependence of the dielectric behaviour of the powdered samples of these compounds was undertaken.

Thermal contact conductance (TCC) measurements are made on bare and gold plated (<= 0.5 mu m) oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) Cu and brass contacts in vacuum, nitrogen, and argon environments. It is observed that the TCC in gaseous environment is significantly higher than that in vacuum due to the enhanced thermal gap conductance. It is found that for a given contact load and gas pressure, the thermal gap conductance for bare OFHC Cu contacts is higher than that for gold plated contacts. It is due to the difference in the molecular weights of copper and gold, which influences the exchange of kinetic energy between the gas molecules and contact surfaces. Furthermore, the gap conductance is found to increase with increasing thickness of gold plating. Topography measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of contact surfaces revealed that surfaces become smoother with increasing gold plating thickness, thus resulting in smaller gaps and consequently higher gap conductance. We have compared the total as well as fine mode aerosol optical depth (tau and tau(fine)) retrieved by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard Terra and Aqua (2001-2005) with the equivalent parameters derived by Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) at Kanpur (26.45 degrees N, 80.35 degrees E), northern India. MODIS Collection 005 (C005)-derived tau(0.55) was found to be in good agreement with the AERONET measurements. The tau(fine) and eta (tau(fine)/tau) were, however, biased low significantly in most matched cases. A new set of retrieval with the use of absorbing aerosol model (SSA similar to 0.87) with increased visible surface reflectance provided improved tau and tau(fine) at Kanpur. The new derivation of eta also compares well qualitatively with an independent set of in situ measurements of accumulation mass fraction over much of the southern India. This suggests that though MODIS land algorithm has limited information to derive size properties of aerosols over land, more accurate parameterization of aerosol and surface properties within the existing C005 algorithm may improve the accuracy of size-resolved aerosol optical properties. The results presented in this paper indicate that there is a need to reconsider the surface parameterization and assumed aerosol properties in MODIS C005 algorithm over the Indian region in order to retrieve more accurate aerosol optical and size properties, which are essential to quantify the impact of human-made aerosols on climate.

We show that the characteristic Mn2+ d emission color from Mn2+-doped CdS nanocrystals can be tuned over as much as 40 nm, in contrast to what should be expected from such a nearly localized d-d transition. This is achieved surprisingly by a fine-tuning of the host particle diameter from 1.9 to 2.6 nm, thereby changing the overall emission color from red to yellow. Systematic experiments in conjunction with state-of-the-art ab initio calculations with full geometry optimization establish that Mn2+ ions residing at surface/subsurface regions have a distorted tetrahedral coordination resulting in a larger ligand field splitting. Consequently, these near-surface Mn2+ species exhibit a lower Mn2+ d emission energy, compared to those residing at the core of the nanocrystal with an undisturbed tetrahedral coordination. The origin of the tunability of the observed Mn2+ emission is the variation of emission contributions arising from Mn2+ doped at the core, subsurface, and surface of the host. Our findings provide a unique and easy method to identify the location of an emitting Mn2+ ion in the nanocrystal, which would be otherwise very difficult to decipher.

From the available H I data on spiral galaxies in three rich Abell clusters and the Virgo Cluster, it is shown that galaxies with medium to large optical sizes tend to be more severely deficient in atomic hydrogen than the small galaxies. This is so both in terms of the fractional number of galaxies that are deficient and the amount of gas lost by a galaxy. The fraction of H I-deficient galaxies increases with size over most of the size range, saturating or dropping only for the largest galaxies. A comparative study is made of various currently accepted gas removal mechanisms, namely those which are a result of galaxy-intracluster medium interactions, e.g., ram pressure stripping, as well as those due to galaxy-galaxy interactions, i.e., collisions and tidal interactions. It is shown that, with the exception of tidal interactions, all of these mechanisms would produce a size dependence in H I deficiency that is the opposite of that observed. That is, the gas in the largest galaxies would be the least affected by these mechanisms. However, if there is significant mass segregation, these processes may give the trends observed in the size dependence of H I deficiency.

A molecular dynamics study of model ions in water is reported. The van der Waals diameter of both the cations and anions is varied. We have carried out two sets of simulations-with and without dispersion interaction-between the ion and water. Self-diffusivity of the ions exhibits an anomalous maximum as a function of the van der Waals diameter for both these sets. This existence of a maximum in self-diffusivity when there is no dispersion interaction between the ion and the water is attributed to the attractive term from electrostatic interactions. Detailed analysis of this effect shows that the solvent shell is more strongly defined in the presence of dispersion interactions. A smaller ion exhibits biexponential decay while a single exponential decay is seen for the ion with maximum diffusivity in the self-part of the intermediate scattering function. The solvent structure around the ion appears to determine much of the dynamics of the ion. Interesting trends are seen in the activation energies and these can be understood in terms of the levitation effect. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3481656]

We study a one-dimensional version of the Kitaev model on a ring of size N, in which there is a spin S > 1/2 on each site and the Hamiltonian is J Sigma(nSnSn+1y)-S-x. The cases where S is integer and half-odd integer are qualitatively different. We show that there is a Z(2)-valued conserved quantity W-n for each bond (n, n + 1) of the system. For integer S, the Hilbert space can be decomposed into 2N sectors, of unequal sizes. The number of states in most of the sectors grows as d(N), where d depends on the sector. The largest sector contains the ground state, and for this sector, for S=1, d=(root 5+1)/2. We carry out exact diagonalization for small systems. The extrapolation of our results to large N indicates that the energy gap remains finite in this limit. In the ground-state sector, the system can be mapped to a spin-1/2 model. We develop variational wave functions to study the lowest energy states in the ground state and other sectors. The first excited state of the system is the lowest energy state of a different sector and we estimate its excitation energy. We consider a more general Hamiltonian, adding a term lambda Sigma W-n(n), and show that this has gapless excitations in the range lambda(c)(1)<=lambda <=lambda(c)(2). We use the variational wave functions to study how the ground-state energy and the defect density vary near the two critical points lambda(c)(1) and lambda(c)(2).

We report a simple and rapid process for the room-temperature synthesis of gold nanoparticles using tannic acid, a green reagent, as both the reducing and stabilising agent. We systematically investigated the effect of pH on the size distribution of nanoparticles synthesized. Based on induction time and zeta- potential measurements, we show that particle size distribution is controlled by a fine balance between the rates of reduction (determined by the initial pH of reactants) and coalescence (determined by the pH of the reaction mixture) in the initial period of growth. This insight led to the optimal batch process for size-controlled synthesis of 2-10 nm gold nanoparticles - slow addition (within 10 minutes) of chloroauric acid into tannic acid.

The development of crystallographic texture and the change in the grain size during warm rolling (300 deg K) and their effect on the tensile yield strength at 77 and 300 deg K are studied in 99.9% pure Cd. Both longitudinal and transverse specimens are tested. The yield strength obeys the Hall--Petch relation. The Hall--Petch slope, k, is lower and the intercept sigma o is higher in the warm worked material in comparison with the corresponding values for annealed Cd. The differences are attributed to the change in 1013 < and 0001 textures that are developed during warm rolling.26 refs.--AA

The machine replication of human reading has been the subject of intensive research for more than three decades. A large number of research papers and reports have already been published on this topic. Many commercial establishments have manufactured recognizers of varying capabilities. Handheld, desk-top, medium-size and large systems costing as high as half a million dollars are available, and are in use for various applications. However, the ultimate goal of developing a reading machine having the same reading capabilities of humans still remains unachieved. So, there still is a great gap between human reading and machine reading capabilities, and a great amount of further effort is required to narrow-down this gap, if not bridge it. This review is organized into six major sections covering a general overview (an introduction), applications of character recognition techniques, methodologies in character recognition, research work in character recognition, some practical OCRs and the conclusions.

The paper analyses electromagnetic wave propagation through nonlinear photonic crystal beam-splitters. Different lattice configurations of Y-junction beam-splitters are simulated and propagation properties are investigated with introducing nonlinearity with varying the rod size in crystal lattice. It is seen that nonlinear photonic crystal shows a considerable band-gap even at low refractive contrast. The division of power in both arms of beam-splitters can be controlled by varying the nonlinearity.
