Infrared spectra are recorded for S-methyl dithiocarbazate and its N-deuterated compound in two molecular conformations in the solid state and in solution between 4000 and 30 cm−1. The assignments have been supported from a complete normal coordinate analysis; the conformation sensitive bands of the –CSNHNH2 grouping are discussed. The assignments are compared with those of related molecules to check the internal consistency and to obtain the pattern of the characteristic bands of thiocarbazoyl (–CSNHNH2) group. The magnitudes of the C–N and S–CH3 torsional barriers are estimated from the force constants.

Synephrinase, an enzyme catalyzing the conversion of (−)-synephrine into p-hydroxyphenylacetaldehyde and methylamine, was purified to apparent homogeneity from the cell-free extracts of Arthrobacter synephrinum grown on (±)-synephrine as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. A 40-fold purification was sufficient to produce synephrinase that is apparently homogeneous as judged by native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and has a specific activity of 1.8 μmol product formed /min/mg protein. Thus, the enzyme is a relatively abundant enzyme, perhaps comprising as much as 2.5% of the total protein. The enzyme essentially required a sulfhydryl compound for its activity. Metal ions like Mg2+, Ca2+, and Mn2+ stimulated the enzyme activity. Metal chelating agents, thiol reagents, denaturing agents, and metal ions like Zn2+, Hg2+, Ag1+, and Cu2+ inhibited synephrinase activity. Apart from (−)-synephrine, the enzyme acted upon (±)-octopamine and β-methoxysynephrine. Molecular oxygen was not utilized during the course of the reaction. The molecular mass of the enzyme as determined by Sephadex G-200 chromatography, was around 156,000. The enzyme was made up of four identical subunits with a molecular mass of 42,000.

Elemental sulphur (in wet precipitated form or dissolved in organic solvents) and hydrogen sulphide have been determined gravimetrically at room temperature by conversion into copper sulphide by elemental copper in presence of an organic solvent such as benzene or acetonitrile. Any solvent in which sulphur is soluble can be used. The black copper sulphide formed can be weighed or determined iodometrically. Analysis indicates the black compound to be Cu1.8S. This room temperature method is a versatile one-step procedure sensitive to microgram or macro amounts of sulphur. It has been used for determining the solubility of sulphur in tetrahydrofuran and dioxan. The apparent heat of solution indicates that sulphur dissolves in these solvents without any marked solute—solvent interactions.

The Raman and infrared spectra of N-(2-pyridyl) thioformamide and N-(2-pyridyl)-thioacetamide have been measured. The assignment of the bands is aided by the complete normal coordinate treatment for all the vibrations of N-(2-pyridyl)thioformamide and its N-deuterated molecule using a Urey—Bradley force function for the in-plane vibrations and a valence force function for the out of plane vibrations. Variable temperature 1H NMR study of the two pyridylthionamides has also been performed. It is inferred that while N-(2-pyridyl)thioformamide favours a cis —CSNH— group, the other compound favours a trans —CSNH— grouping at ambient temperature.

Reaction of lead nitrate and 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid under hydrothermal conditions carried out at different temperatures and pH yields a hybrid Compound Pb-2(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate)2, 1, and a three-dimensional coordination polymer Pb(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate), It. The two-dimensional double-layered compound, 1, with two-dimensional inorganic connectivities and one-dimensional organic connectivity is novel since hybrid compounds formed by 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid are uncommon. The lead atoms in I have holodirectional geometry, while those in II show hemidirectionality. In both I and II, 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid acts as a multi-dentate ligand with both the carboxylic groups and the amine group taking part in coordination. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Layered LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, which is isostructural to LiCoO2, is considered as a potential cathode material. A layer of carbon coated on the particles improves the electrode performance, Which is attributed to an increase of the grain connectivity and also to protection of metal oxide from chemical reaction. The present work involves in situ synthesis of carbon-coated submicrometer-sized particles of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 in an inverse microemulsion medium in the presence of glucose. The precursor obtained from the reaction is heated in air at 900 degrees C for 6 h to get crystalline LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2. The carbon coating is found to impart porosity as well as higher surface area in relation to bare samples of the compound. The electrochemical characterization studies provide that carbon-coated LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 samples exhibit improved rate capability and cycling performance. The carbon coatings are shown to suppress the capacity fade, which is normally observed for the bare compound. Impedance spectroscopy data provide additional evidence for the beneficial effect of a carbon coating on LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 particles.

Cinnamate is the product of phenylalanine ammonialyase (PAL). This compound, a precursor of phenolics in plants, has been shown to be phytotoxic. Cinnamate inhibits PAL activity in cucumber seedlings. DL-phenylalanine has the same effect on the enzyme but does not affect growth. Actinomycin D and cycloheximide are phytotoxic and inhibit PAL. Production of a double-peg has been noticed in the seedlings, grown in the presence of actinomycin D. Light stimulates PAL activity in the seedling.

NMR studies of methyldichlorophosphine have been undertaken in the nematic phase of mixed liquid crystals of opposite diamagnetic anisotropies. The rα structure is derived. The proton chemical-shift anisotropy has been determined from the studies without the use of a reference compound and without a change of experimental conditions. It is shown that the molecule orients in the liquid crystal with positive diamagnetic anisotropy in such a way that the C3 symmetry axis of the CH3P moiety is preferentially aligned perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field, unlike other similar systems. This is interpreted in terms of the formation of a weak solvent-solute molecular complex. The heteronuclear indirect spin-spin coupling constants are determined. The sign of the two-bond JPH is found to be positive.

Generation of H2O2 by rat liver mitochondria with choline, glycerol 1-phosphate and proline as substrates has been shown by using high-concentration phosphate buffer. Rates obtained under these conditions were higher and more consistent as compared with the earlier reports with high-concentration mannitol/sucrose/Tris buffer. Sulphate ions could replace phosphate indicating a requirement for a high concentration of oxygen-containing anions. H2O2 generation was dependent on the presence of native mitochondria and substrate. Maximal rates with various substrates were found to be the same as with succinate. Values of Km and Vmax for H2O2 generation were considerably less than those obtained for respective dehydrogenase activities, measured by dye reduction. Scavengers of O2-. and OH. inhibited generation of H2O2. ATP, ADP, thyronine derivatives and a number of phenolic compounds also showed very potent inhibitory effects of H2O2 generation, whereas phenyl compound had no effect. Phenolic compounds did not have any effect on mitochondrial superoxide dismutase and choline dehydrogenase activities as well as on O2-. generation by the xanthine-xanthine oxidase system. Inhibition by phenolic compounds may have potential for regulation of the intracellular concentration of H2O2, that is not considered to have a "second messenger' function.

Rapid solidification of Ti-7.3wt.%Cu (near-eutectoid composition), Ti-36.2wt.%Ni and Ti-34.3wt.% Ni-5.8wt.%Si alloys has been carried out by electron beam melting and splat quenching on a water-cooled rotating copper disc. The product obtained was in the form of thin ribbons 60–100 μm thick. Transmission electron microscopy studies of Ti---Cu alloy splats showed that the microstructure consisted of a mixture of martensite and a lamellar eutectoid product. The formation of the intermetallic compound Ti2Cu involved a diffusionless ω transformation and spinodal clustering. In the case of Ti---Ni alloy the as-quenched microstructure is complex, consisting of α, transformed β and intermetallic phases. This could have arisen possibly as a result of local variation in cooling rates. Rapid solidification of Ti---Ni---Si alloy resulted in partial quenching of an amorphous phase. The amorphous phase was seen to be extremely hard (a Vickers hardness of about 800 HV).
