The Ce-doped BiFeO3 (BFO) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using a facile solgel route with varying Ce concentrations in the range of 15 mol%. Ferroelectric transition temperature was found to shift from 723 degrees C +/- 5 degrees C for pristine BFO NPs to 534 degrees C +/- 3 degrees C for 5 mol% Ce-doped BFO NPs. UVVis absorption spectra of BFO NPs showed a significant blue shift of similar to 100 nm on Ce doping. The Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectrum centered similar to 550 cm(-1) becomes considerably broadened on Ce doping which is due to additional closely spaced vibrational peaks as revealed by the second derivative FTIR analysis. High-frequency EPR measurements indicated that clustering occurs at high dopant levels, and that Fe is present as Fe(3+)corroborating Mossbauer measurements. The values of saturation and remanent magnetization for 3% Ce-doped BFO NPs are 3.03 and 0.49 emu/g, respectively, which are quite significant at room temperature, making it more suitable for technological applications.

Multiferroic nanoparticles (NPs) of pristine and Ca, Ba co-doped BiFeO3 were synthesized by a facile sal gel route. Co-doping was done by fixing the total dopant concentration at 5 mol% and then the relative concentrations of Ca and Ba was varied. Structural, optical and magnetic properties of the NPs were investigated using different techniques. UV-Vis absorption spectra of BiFeO3 NPs showed a substantial blue shift of similar to 100 nm (530 nm -> 430 nm) on Ca. Ba co-doping which corresponds to increase in band gap by 0.5 eV. Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy confirmed that iron is present only in 3(+) valence state in all co-doped samples. The coercive field increased by 18 times for Bi0.95Ca0.01Ba0.04FeO3 samples, which is the maximum enhancement, observed amongst all the 5 mol% doped samples. At the equimolar (2.5 mol % each) concentration of co-dopants, the coercive field shows a significant enhancement of about 9 times (220 Oe -> 2014 Oe) with concomitant increase in saturation magnetization by 7 times. Thus, equimolar co-doping causes simultaneous enhancement of the twin aspects of magnetic properties thereby making them better suited for device applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The paper reports the effect of the addition of small amount of Al on the microstructure and properties of HITPERM class rapidly solidified Fe44Co44Zr7B4Cu1 glassy alloy. Using three dimensional atom probe measurements we present evidence for the formation of Cu clusters on annealing in the metallic glass matrix of the Al containing alloy Fe43Co43Al2Zr7B4Cu1. Such clusters are otherwise absent in the parent alloy under similar conditions. The Cu clusters provides heterogeneous nucleation sites for the formation of bcc alpha'-FeCo phase leading to an increase in number density of this nanocrystalline phase and thereby enhancing the magnetic properties. Tin (Sn) doped zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were synthesized by sol-gel spin coating method using zinc acetate di-hydrate and tin chloride di-hydrate as the precursor materials. The films were deposited on glass and silicon substrates and annealed at different temperatures in air ambient. The agglomeration of grains was observed by the addition of Sn in ZnO film with an average grain size of 60 nm. The optical properties of the films were studied using UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer. The optical band gap energies were estimated at different concentrations of Sn. The MOS capacitors were fabricated using Sn doped ZnO films. The capacitance-voltage (C-V), dissipation vs. voltage (D-V) and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were studied and the electrical resistivity and dielectric constant were estimated. The porosity and surface area of the films were increased with the doping of Sn which makes these films suitable for opto-electronic applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Since it is difficult to find the analytical solution of the governing Poisson equation for double gate MOSFETs with the body doping term included, the majority of the compact models are developed for undoped-body devices for which the analytical solution is available. Proposed is a simple technique to included a body doping term in such surface potential based common double gate MOSFET models also by taking into account any differences between the gate oxide thickness. The proposed technique is validated against TCAD simulation and found to be accurate as long as the channel is fully depleted.

Pure and tin doped zinc oxide (Sn:ZnO) thin films were prepared for the first time by NSP technique using aqueous solutions of zinc acetate dehydrate, tin (IV) chloride fendahydrate and methanol. X-ray diffraction patterns confirm that the films are polycrystalline in nature exhibiting hexagonal wurtzite type, with (0 0 2) as preferred orientation. The structural parameters such as lattice constant ('a' and `c'), crystallite size, dislocation density, micro strain, stress and texture coefficient were calculated from X-ray diffraction studies. Surface morphology was found to be modified with increasing Sn doping concentration. The ZnO films have high transmittance 85% in the visible region, and the transmittance is found to be decreased with the increase of Sn doping concentration. The corresponding optical band gap decreases from 3.25 to 3.08 eV. Room temperature photoluminescence reveals the sharp emission of strong UV peak at 400 nm (3.10 eV) and a strong sharp green luminescence at 528 nm (2.34 eV) in the Sn doped ZnO films. The electrical resistivity is found to be 10(6) Omega-cm at higher temperature and 10(5) Omega-cm at lower temperature. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene by using immobilized titania/silica on aluminum sheets
Resumo:
The aim of this study was to prepare a highly active immobilized titania/silica photocatalyst and to test its performance in situ toward degradation of toluene as one of the major toxic indoor contaminants. In this work, two different titania layers immobilized on Al sheets were synthesized via low temperature sol-gel method employing presynthesized highly active titania powders (Degussa P25 and Millennium PC500, mass ratio 1:1): (a) with a silica/titania binder and a protective layer and (b) without the binder. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen sorption measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The in situ photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene was selected as a probe reaction to test photocatalytic activity and to verify the potential application of these materials for air remediation. Results show that nontransparent highly photocatalytically active coatings based on the silica/titania binder and homogeneously dispersed TiO2 powders were obtained on the Al sheets. The crystalline structure of titania was not altered upon addition of the binder, which also prevented inhomogeneous agglomeration of particles on the photocatalyst surface. The photoactivity results indicate that the adsorption properties and photocatalytic activity of immobilized photocatalysts with the silica/titania binder and an underlying protective layer were very effective and additionally, they exhibited considerably improved adhesion and uniformity. We present a new highly photocatalytically active immobilized catalyst on a convenient metallic support, which has a potential application in an air cleaning device.

Among all methods of metal alloy slurry preparation, the cooling slope method is the simplest in terms of design and process control. The method involves pouring of the melt from top, down an oblique and channel shaped plate cooled from bottom by counter flowing water. The melt, while flowing down, partially solidifies and forms columnar dendrites on plate wall. These dendrites are broken into equiaxed grains and are washed away with melt. The melt, together with the equiaxed grains, forms semisolid slurry collected at the slope exit and cast into billets having non-dendritic microstructure. The final microstructure depends on several process parameters such as slope angle, slope length, pouring superheat, and cooling rate. The present work involves scaling analysis of conservation equations of momentum, energy and species for the melt flow down a cooling slope. The main purpose of the scaling analysis is to obtain a physical insight into the role and relative importance of each parameter in influencing the final microstructure. For assessing the scaling analysis, the trends predicted by scaling are compared against corresponding numerical results using an enthalpy based solidification model with incorporation of solid phase movement.

A new coupled approach is presented for modeling the hydrogen bubble evolution and engulfment during an aluminum alloy solidification process in a micro-scale domain. An explicit enthalpy scheme is used to model the solidification process which is coupled with a level-set method for tracking the hydrogen bubble evolution. The volume averaging techniques are used to model mass, momentum, energy and species conservation equations in the chosen micro-scale domain. The interaction between the solid, liquid and gas interfaces in the system have been studied. Using an order-of-magnitude study on growth rates of bubble and solid interfaces, a criterion is developed to predict bubble elongation which can occur during the engulfment phase. Using this model, we provide further evidence in support of a conceptual thought experiment reported in literature, with regard to estimation of final pore shape as a function of typical casting cooling rates. The results from the proposed model are qualitatively compared with in situ experimental observations reported in literature. The ability of the model to predict growth and movement of a hydrogen bubble and its subsequent engulfment by a solidifying front has been demonstrated for varying average cooling rates encountered in typical sand, permanent mold, and various casting processes. We report on the single crystal growth of 50% Sr and Y doped multiferroic DyMnO3 using optical floating zone technique. A comparison of the effect of growth ambience and of chemical substitution on the crystal structure of DyMnO3 is attempted. It is observed that DyMnO3 adopts Pm3m cubic structure with 50% Sr doping whereas with 50% Y doping, the crystal structure is hexagonal P6(3)cm. Orthorhombic Pnma structure is adopted by DyMnO3 when grown in air, whereas hexagonal P6(3)cm structure is obtained when grown under the ambience of argon. The structural polymorphism is discussed in terms of difference in ionic sizes of Sr, Y and Dy, comparable Gibbs free energies and coordination schemes of surrounding oxygens for hexagonal and orthorhombic structures of DyMnO3. We report on the substrate assisted doping of ZnO nanowires grown by a vapor transport technique. The nanowires were grown non-catalytically on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and soda lime glass (SLG). Carbon from MWCNTs and sodium from SLG diffuse into ZnO during the growth and are distributed uniformly and provide doping. An advantage associated with the technique is that no conventional external dopant source is required to obtain doped ZnO nanowires. The diameter, length and hence the aspect ratio can easily be varied by changing the growth conditions. The transport studies on both carbon and sodium doped ZnO support the p-type nature of ZnO. The p-type nature of carbon doped ZnO is stable for at least eight months.

Mn2+ doped (0-50.0 molar %) ZnS d-dots have been synthesized in water medium by using an environment friendly low cost chemical technique. Tunable dual emission in UV and yellow-orange regions is achieved by tailoring the Mn2+ doping concentration in the host ZnS nanocrystal. The optimum doping concentration for achieving efficient photoluminescence (PL) emission is determined to be similar to 1.10 (at. %) corresponding to 40.0 (molar %) of Mn2+ doping concentration used during synthesis. The mechanism of charge transfer from the host to the dopant leading to the intensity modulated tunable (594-610 nm) yellow-orange PL emission is straightforwardly understood as no capping agent is used. The temperature dependent PL emission measurements are carried out, viz., in 1.10 at. % Mn2+ doped sample and the experimental results are explained by using a theoretical PL emission model. It is found that the ratio of non-radiative to radiative recombination rates is temperature dependent and this phenomenon has not been reported, so far, in Mn2+ doped ZnS system. The colour tuning of the emitted light from the samples are evident from the calculated chromaticity coordinates. UV light irradiation for 150 min in 40.0 (molar %) Mn2+ doped sample shows an enhancement of 33% in PL emission intensity. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4795779]

The characterization of a closed-cell aluminum foam with the trade name Alporas is carried out here under compression loading for a nominal cross-head speed of 1 mm/min. Foam samples in the form of cubes are tested in a UTM and the average stress-strain behavior is obtained which clearly displays a plateau strength of approximately 2 MPa. It is noted that the specific energy absorption capacity of the foam can be high despite its low strength which makes it attractive as a material for certain energy-absorbing countermeasures. The mechanical behavior of the present Alporas foam is simulated using cellular (i.e. so-called microstructure-based) and solid element-based finite element models. The efficacy of the cellular approach is shown, perhaps for the first time in published literature, in terms of prediction of both stress-strain response and inclined fold formation during axial crush under compression loading. Keeping in mind future applications under impact loads, limited results are presented when foam samples are subjected to low velocity impact in a drop-weight test set-up.

A combined 3D finite element simulation and experimental study of interaction between a notch and cylindrical voids ahead of it in single edge notch (tension) aluminum single crystal specimens is undertaken in this work. Two lattice orientations are considered in which the notch front is parallel to the crystallographic 10 (1) over bar] direction. The flat surface of the notch coincides with the (010) plane in one orientation and with the (1 (1) over bar1) plane in the other. Three equally spaced cylindrical voids are placed directly ahead of the notch tip. The predicted load-displacement curves, slip traces, lattice rotation and void growth from the finite element analysis are found to be in good agreement with the experimental observations for both the orientations. Finite element results show considerable through-thickness variation in both hydrostatic stress and equivalent plastic slip which, however, depends additionally on the lattice orientation. The through-thickness variation in the above quantities affects the void growth rate and causes it to differ from the center-plane to the free surface of the specimen. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The current study describes the evolution of microstructure and texture in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr-based 7010 aluminum alloy during different modes of hot cross-rolling. Processing of materials involves three different types of cross-rolling. The development of texture in the one-step cross-rolled specimen can be described by a typical beta-fiber having the maximum intensity near Copper (Cu) component. However, for the multi-step cross-rolled specimens, the as-rolled texture is mainly characterized by a strong rotated-Brass (Bs) component and a very weak rotated-cube component. Subsequent heat treatment leads to sharpening of the major texture component (i.e., rotated-Bs). Furthermore, the main texture components in all the specimens appear to be significantly rotated in a complex manner away from their ideal positions because of non-symmetric deformations in the two rolling directions. Detailed microstructural study indicates that dynamic recovery is the dominant restoration mechanism operating during the hot rolling. During subsequent heat treatment, static recovery dominates, while a combination of particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) and strain-induced grain boundary migration (SIBM) causes partial recrystallization of the grain structure. The aforementioned restoration mechanisms play an important role in the development of texture components. The textural development in the current study could be attributed to the combined effects of (a) cross-rolling and inter-pass annealing that reduce the intensity of Cu component after each successive pass, (b) recrystallization resistance of Bs-oriented grains, (c) stability of Bs texture under cross-rolling, and (d) Zener pinning by Al3Zr dispersoids.
