It is shown that Southwood's instability criterion for the onset of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at the magnetopause can be directly obtained from the marginal instability condition for the pure Alfven surface waves propagating along the interface between two incompressible media in the limit when the wave propagation direction is nearly perpendicular to the direction of the largest magnetic field. The phase velocity of the surface waves first excited at the onset of the instability depends on the angle between the interplanetary magnetic field and flow velocity in the solar wind in front of the bow shock.

The rail-sleeper system is idealized as an infinite, periodic beam-mass system. Use is made of the periodicity principle for the semi-infinite halves on either side of the forcing point for evaluation of the wave propagation constants and the corresponding modal vectors. It is shown that the spread of acceleration away from the forcing point depends primarily upon one of the wave propagation constants. However, all the four modal vectors (two for the left-hand side and two for the right-hand side) determine the driving point impedance of the rail-sleeper system, which in combination with the driving point impedance of the wheel (which is adopted from the preceding companion paper) determines the forces generated by combined surface roughness and the resultant accelerations. The compound one-third octave acceleration levels generated by typical roughness spectra are generally of the same order as the observed levels.

It is shown that a method based on the principle of analytic continuation can be used to solve a set of inhomogeneous infinite simultaneous equations encountered in the analysis of surface acoustic wave propagation along the periodically perturbed surface of a piezoelectric medium.

The computations of Flahive and Quinn1 of the dispersion curves of low frequency degenerate surface (DS) modes propagating along the magnetic field in an electron-hole plasma are extended to higher values of the wavenumber. We find that beyond a certain value of the wavenumber the DS mode re-enters the allowed region of surface wave propagation and tends to an asymptotic frequency ωR (<ωLH). These low frequency resonances of an electron-hole plasma are discussed with reference to the experimental observations.

Magnetoplasmon-type surface polaritons are studied at the interfaces of sandwich structures in the configuration with a magnetic field oriented parallel to the interface but perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. It is shown that the propagation window for the surface polaritons is shifted to higher frequencies in the presence of the magnetic field directed positively. On reversal of the magnetic field an additional low frequency propagation band appears. Irrespective of the direction and strength of the magnetic field there exists a certain frequency range in which interface polaritons cannot propagate. For sandwich structures for which the dielectric constant and the plasma frequency of one medium are simultaneously greater or less than those of the second medium gaps and multiple branches can appear in the propagation window either for n > 0 or n <; 0 waves. A graphical method for the estimation of critical ranges of B0 and dielectric constant ratios for different sandwich structures, within which gaps and multiple branches appear, is given

We propose an effective elastography technique in which an acoustic radiation force is used for remote palpation to generate localized tissue displacements, which are directly correlated to localized variations of tissue stiffness and are measured using a light probe in the same direction of ultrasound propagation. The experimental geometry has provision to input light beam along the ultrasound propagation direction, and hence it can be prealigned to ensure proper interception of the focal region by the light beam. Tissue-mimicking phantoms with homogeneous and isotropic mechanical properties of normal and malignant breast tissue are considered for the study. Each phantom is insonified by a focusing ultrasound transducer (1 MHz). The focal volume of the transducer and the ultrasound radiation force in the region are estimated through solving acoustic wave propagation through medium assuming average acoustic properties. The forward elastography problem is solved for the region of insonification assuming the Lame's parameters and Poisson's ratio, under Dirichlet boundary conditions which gives a distribution of displacement vectors. The direction of displacement, though presented spatial variation, is predominantly towards the ultrasound propagation direction. Using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation we have traced the photons through the phantom and collected the photons arriving at the detector on the boundary of the object in the direction of ultrasound. The intensity correlations are then computed from detected photons. The intensity correlation function computed through MC simulation showed a modulation whose strength is found to be proportional to the amplitude of displacement and inversely related to the storage (elastic) modulus. It is observed that when the storage modulus in the focal region is increased the computed displacement magnitude, as indicated by the depth of modulation in the intensity autocorrelation, decreased and the trend is approximately exponential.

A new super convergent sandwich beam finite element formulation is presented in this article. This element is a two-nodded, six degrees of freedom (dof) per node (3 dof u(0), w, phi for top and bottom face sheets each), which assumes that all the axial and flexural loads are taken by face sheets, while the core takes only the shear loads. The beam element is formulated based on first-order shear deformation theory for the face sheets and the core displacements are assumed to vary linearly across the thickness. A number of numerical experiments involving static, free vibration, and wave propagation analysis examples are solved with an aim to show the super convergent property of the formulated element. The examples presented in this article consider both metallic and composite face sheets. The formulated element is verified in most cases with the results available in the published literature.

The paper analyses electromagnetic wave propagation through nonlinear photonic crystal beam-splitters. Different lattice configurations of Y-junction beam-splitters are simulated and propagation properties are investigated with introducing nonlinearity with varying the rod size in crystal lattice. It is seen that nonlinear photonic crystal shows a considerable band-gap even at low refractive contrast. The division of power in both arms of beam-splitters can be controlled by varying the nonlinearity.

It is observed that Hartmann flow sustains wave propagation in its centre region for waves whose phase speed is less than the maximum flow speed. Similar to the previous observations it is found that viscous boundary layers around the critical level and at the wall replace the exponential regions and wave sinks required for over-reflection in the inviscid flow. The uniform magnetic field stabilizes the flow for small-wave-number disturbances along thez-direction. Over-reflection is confined to a few ranges of phase speeds for which the two boundary layers are close together rather than widely separated. These ranges correspond exactly to those for which unstable eigenmodes exist. Over-reflection is associated with a wave phase tilt opposite in direction to the shear.

Modeling of wave propagation in hoses, unlike in rigid pipes or waveguides, introduces a coupling between the inside medium, the hose wall, and the outside medium, This alters the axial wave number and thence the corresponding effective speed of sound inside the hose resulting in sound radiation into the outside medium, also called the breakout or shell noise, The existing literature on the subject is such that a hose cannot be integrated into the, whole piping system made up of sections of hoses, pipes, and mufflers to predict the acoustical performance in terms of transmission loss (TL), The present paper seeks to fill this gap, Three one-dimensional coupled wave equations are written to account for the presence of a yielding wall with a finite lumped transverse impedance of the hose material, The resulting wave equation can readily be reduced to a transfer matrix form using an effective wave number for a moving medium in a hose section, Incorporating the effect of fluid loading due to the outside medium also allows prediction of the transverse TL and the breakout noise, Axial TL and transverse TL have been combined into net TL needed by designers, Predictions of the axial as well as transverse TL are shown to compare well with those of a rigorous 3-D analysis using only one-hundredth of the computation time, Finally, results of some parametric studies are reported for engineers involved in the acoustical design of hoses. A 6 X 6 transfer matrix is presented to evaluate the response of a multi-layer infinite plate to a given two-dimensional pressure excitation on one of its faces or, alternatively, to evaluate the acoustic pressure distribution excited by the normal velocity components of the radiating surfaces. It is shown that the present transfer matrix is a general case embodying the transfer matrices of normal excitation and one-dimensional pressure excitation due to an oblique incident wave. It is also shown that the present transfer matrix obeys the necessary checks to categorize the physically symmetric multi-layer plate as dynamically symmetric. Expressions are derived to obtain the wave propagation parameters, such as the transmission, absorption and reflection coefficients, in terms of the elements of the transfer matrix presented. Numerical results for transmission loss and reflection coefficients of a two-layer configuration are presented to illustrate the effect of angles of incidence, layer characteristics and ambient media.

Computer simulations have shown a novel geodesic splitting on the paraboloid of revolution leading to a multiplicity of surface ray paths. Such a phenomenon would have wide ramifications for wave propagation problems in general, besides applications in target-detection problems and the computational requirements of ray-theoretic formulations such as the UTD, in computing the antenna characteristics in the high-frequency domain.

The review is concerned with models that analyze transport:processes that occur during microwave heating. Early models on microwave. heating used Lambert's law to describe the microwave power absorption. Over the last decade, models for transport processes have been developed with the microwave power derived from Maxwell's equations. Those models, primarily based on plane waves, have been used for analyzing microwave heating of solids, liquids, emulsions, microwave thawing and drying. The models illustrate phenomena such a resonances, hot spots, edge and runaway heating. The literature on microwave sintering, susceptor heating and microwave assisted synthesis is largely experimental in nature and only key issues are highlighted. To fully appreciate the models for microwave heating, a section on the theory of electromagnetic wave propagation is included, where expressions for the electric field in dielectric slabs and cylinders are presented.

A new beam element is developed to study the thermoelastic behavior of functionally graded beam structures. The element is based on the first-order shear deformation theory and it accounts for varying elastic and thermal properties along its thickness. The exact solution of static part of the governing differential equations is used to construct interpolating polynomials for the element formulation. Consequently, the stiffness matrix has super-convergent property and the element is free of shear locking. Both exponential and power-law variations of material property distribution are used to examine different stress variations. Static, free vibration and wave propagation problems are considered to highlight the behavioral difference of functionally graded material beam with pure metal or pure ceramic beams. The problem of electromagnetic wave propagation in a rectangular waveguide containing a thick iris is considered for its complete solution by reducing it to two suitable integral equations, one of which is of the first kind and the other is of the second kind. These integral equations are solved approximately, by using truncated Fourier series for the unknown functions. The reflection coefficient is computed numerically from the two integral equation approaches, and almost the same numerical results are obtained. This is also depicted graphically against the wave number and compared with thin iris results, which are computed by using complementary formulations coupled with Galerkin approximations. While the reflection coefficient for a thin iris steadily increases with the wave number, for a thick iris it fluctuates and zero reflection occurs. The number of zeros of the reflection coefficient for a thick iris increases with the thickness. Thus a thick iris becomes completely transparent for some discrete wave numbers. This phenomenon may be significant in the modelling of rectangular waveguides.
