Experimental ionic conductivity of different alkali ions in water shows markedly different dependences on pressure. Existing theories such as that of Hubbard-Onsager are unable to explain these dependences on pressure of the ionic conductivity for all ions. We report molecular dynamics investigation of potassium chloride solution at low dilution in water at several pressures between 1 bar and 2 kbar. Two different potential models have been employed. One of the models successfully reproduces the experimentally observed trend in ionic conductivity of K+ ions in water over the 0.001-2 kbar range. We also propose a theoretical explanation, albeit at a qualitative level, to account for the dependence of ionic conductivity on pressure in terms of the previously studied Levitation Effect. It also provides a microscopic picture in terms of the pore network in liquid water.

A novel vinyl ether, 2,2-dimethyl-4-vinyioxymethyl-1,3-dioxol (DMVMD), that has a dimethyl ketal protected vicinal diol functionality was synthesizied from readily available starting materials, such as glycerol, acetone and acetylene. Copolymerisation of DMVMD with maleic anhydride (MAH) in various molar ratios was carried out using a free radical initiator. The composition of the copolymer was established by conductometric titration, and was found to be 1:1 irrespective of the monomer feed composition thus establishing its alternating nature. The copolymer formed clear free standing films upon solvent casting which became insoluble upon prolonged exposure to ambeint atmosphere. The insolubility is ascribed to moisture induced crosslinking. A plausible mechanism for the crosslinking involves the hydrolysis of some of the anhydride groups, followed by acid catalysed deketalization, and then by the reaction of the alcoholic groups, thus generated, with the residual anhydride to give ester crosslinks. This hypothesis was confirmed both by model reactions and insitu FT-IR studies.

The adsorption of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) onto alumina has been studied as a function of pH, both individually and in the presence of each other. The adsorption density of PAA is found to decrease with an increase of pH while that of PVA shows the opposite trend. In a binary system containing PAA and PVA, the presence of PVA does not affect the adsorption of PAA onto alumina, but the addition of PAA diminishes the adsorption of PVA in the pH range investigated. The adsorption isotherm of PAA at acidic pH exhibits high-affinity Langmuirian behavior. The isotherms for PVA appear rounded and are of the low-affinity type, Once again the adsorption isotherms of PAA remain unaltered in the presence of PVA whereas those of PVA are significantly affected resulting in a lowering of the adsorption density consequent to PAA addition. A variation in the sequence of addition of PAA and PVA does not affect the adsorption behavior of either of the polymers, The electrokinetic behavior of alumina with PAA is hardly influenced by the addition of PVA, On the other hand, the electrophoretic mobility of alumina in the presence of PVA is significantly altered in the presence of PAA and closely resembles the trend observed with PAA alone. Desorption studies reveal that over 80% of PVA could be desorbed in the pH range 3-9 whereas in the case of PAA, the percent desorption increases from 20 to about 70% as the pH is increased from about 3 to 8. Solution conductivity tests confirm interaction of aluminum species and PAA in the bulk solution. FTIR spectroscopic data provide evidence in support of hydrogen bonding and chemical interaction in the case of the PAA-alumina system and hydrogen bonding with respect to the PVA-alumina interaction. A high speed photographic technique has been employed to measure the Sauter mean diameter of bubbles experimentally in a gas liquid ejector using a sodium chloride-air system. The measured values are compared with the theoretically predicted maximum bubble size diameter using Sprow's correlation. Bubble size as a function of the liquid flow rate and also of its distance from the throat of the ejector has been reported in this paper. The results obtained for this non-reactive system are also compared with those obtained earlier for the air-water system.

The thermal degradation of vinyl polyperoxides, poly(styrene peroxide, (PSP), poly(alpha-methylstyrene peroxide) (PAMSP) and poly(alpha-phenylstyrene pet-oxide) (PAPSP), was carried out at different temperatures in toluene. The time evolution of molecular weight distributions (MWDs) was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). A continuous distribution model was used to evaluate the random chain degradation rate coefficients. The activation energies, determined from the temperature dependence of the rate coefficients, suggest that thermal degradation of polyperoxides is controlled by the dissociation of the O-O bonds in the backbone of the polymer chain. Among the three polyperoxides investigated, the thermal stability is the highest for PAPSP and the lowest for PAMSP. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The most stable vinyl polyperoxide, namely, poly(indene peroxide) (PINDP), an alternating copolymer of indene and oxygen, was synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of indene. It was characterized by H-1-NMR and C-13-NMR, Fourier transform infrared, differential scanning calorimetry, direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography mass spectrometry studies. The overall activation energy for the degradation and the glass-transition temperature of PINDP were 47 kcal/mol and 327 K respectively, which were very high compared to those of other vinyl polyperoxides. Diethyl allyl phosphate (DEAP) monomer has been synthesized, and characterized, using H-1 NMR and direct ionization mass spectrometric (DI-MS) techniques. It was free-radically polymerized to yield the poly(diethyl allyl phosphate) (PDEAP). The direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometric (DP-MS) analysis of the PDEAP revealed that it undergoes thermal degradation to yield mainly the monomer. Utility of PDEAP as a potent flame-retardant additive in polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has also been established.

The ultrasonic degradation of poly(vinyl acetate) was carried out in six different solvents and two mixtures of solvents. The evolution of molecular weight distribution (MWD) with time was determined with gel permeation chromatography. The observed MWDs were analyzed by continuous distribution kinetics. A stoichiometric kernel that accounts for preferential mid-point breakage of the polymer chains was used. The degradation rate coefficient of the polymer in each solvent was determined from the model. The variations of rate coefficients were correlated with vapor pressure of the solvent, the Flory–Huggins polymer–solvent interaction parameter and the kinematic viscosity of the solution. A lower saturation vapor pressure resulted in higher degradation rates of the polymer. The degradation rate increased with increasing kinematic viscosity.

A unique phenomenon of ‘autoacceleration’ was observed in a free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers and oxygen. Unlike the well known autoacceleration phenomenon in polymerization processes, this unusual phenomenon is not readily conceivable in terms of solution viscosity based reasoning. Surprisingly, we have observed manifestation of this new autoacceleration during free radical oxidative polymerization of some vinyl monomers at low conversions, where generally the polymerization reaction is zero order, the conversion–time plot are linear and viscosity effects are negligible. In the present paper, we interpret the mechanism of this new autoacceleration phenomenon on the basis of reactivity of the propagating radicals in terms of heat of formation data.
