Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) based on acrylic acid (AA), sodium acrylate (SA), and acrylamide (AM) were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinking agent. The equilibrium swelling capacities and the rates of swelling of SAPs varied with the AM content and followed first-order kinetics. The photodegradation of SAPs in their equilibrium swollen state was carried out by monitoring their swelling capacity and the residual weight fraction. The SAPs degraded in two stages, wherein the swelling capacity increased to a maximum and then subsequently decreased. Thermogravimetric analysis of the SAPs indicated that the copolymeric superabsorbents had intermediate thermal stability between the homopolymeric superabsorbents. The activation energies of SAPs with 0, 20, and 100 mol % AM content were determined by Kissinger method and were found to be 299, 248, and 147 kJ mol-1, respectively. The ultrasonic degradation of the superabsorbents was carried out in their equilibrium swollen state, and the change in the viscosity with ultrasonication time was used to quantify the degradation. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA superabsorbent was also investigated at various ultrasound intensities. The degradation rate coefficients were found to increase with the intensity of ultrasound. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA/AM (20% AM) was also carried out, and degradation rate was found to be more than that of the AA/SA superabsorbent. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper studies the effect of longitudinal magnetic field on ultrasonic vibration in single walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based on nonlocal continuum medium theory. Governing partial differential equations of CNTs are derived by considering the Lorentz magnetic forces applied on CNTs induced by a longitudinal magnetic field through Maxwell equations. The vibration characteristics of CNTs under a longitudinal magnetic field are obtained by solving the governing equations via wave propagation approach. The effects of longitudinal magnetic field on vibration of CNTs are discussed through numerical experiments. The present analysis show that vibration frequencies of CNTs drops dramatically in the presence of the magnetic field for various circumferential wavenumbers. Such effect is also observed for various boundary conditions of the CNT. New features for the effect of longitudinal magnetic field on ultrasonic vibration of CNTs, presented in this paper are useful in the design of nano-drive device, nano-oscillator and actuators and nano-electron technology, where carbon nanotubes act as basic elements.

In this paper, ultrasonic wave propagation analysis in fluid filled single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is studied using nonlocal elasticity theory. The SWCNT is modeled using Flugge's shell theory, with the wall having axial, circumferential and radial degrees of freedom and also including small scale effects. The fluid inside the SWCNT is assumed as water. Nonlocal governing equations for this system are derived and wave propagation analysis is also carried out. The presence of fluid in SWCNT alters the ultrasonic wave dispersion behavior. The wavenumber and wave velocity are smaller in presence of fluid as compared to the empty SWCNT. The nonlocal elasticity calculation shows that the wavenumber tends to reach the continuum limit at certain frequencies and the corresponding wave velocity tends to zero at those frequencies indicating localization and stationary behavior. It has been shown that the circumferential. waves will propagate non-dispersively at higher frequencies in nonlocality. The magnitudes of wave velocities of circumferential waves are smaller in nonlocal elasticity as compared to local elasticity. We also show that the cut-off frequency depend on the nonlocal scaling parameter and also on the density of the fluid inside the SWCNT, and the axial wavenumber, as the fluid becomes denser the cut-off frequency decreases. The effect of axial wavenumber on the ultrasonic wave behavior in SWCNTS filled with water is also discussed.

In the present work, the ultrasonic strain sensing performance of the large area PVDF thin film subjected to the thermal fatigue is studied. The PVDF thin film is prepared using hot press and the piezoelectric phase (beta-phase) has been achieved by thermo-mechanical treatment and poling under DC field. The sensors used in aircrafts for structural health monitoring applications are likely to be subjected to a wide range of temperature fluctuations which may create thermal fatigue in both aircraft structures and in the sensors. Thus, the sensitivity of the PVDF sensors for thermal fatigue needs to be studied for its effective implementation in the structural health monitoring applications. In present work, the fabricated films have been subjected to certain number of thermal cycles which serve as thermal fatigue and are further tested for ultrasonic strain sensitivity at various different frequencies. The PVDF sensor is bonded on the beam specimen at one end and the ultrasonic guided waves are launched with a piezoelectric wafer bonded on another end of the beam. Sensitivity of PVDF sensor in terms of voltage is obtained for increasing number of thermal cycles. Sensitivity variation is studied at various different extent of thermal fatigue. The variation of the sensor sensitivity with frequency due to thermal fatigue at different temperatures is also investigated. The present investigation shows an appropriate temperature range for the application of the PVDF sensors in structural health monitoring.

Lamb wave type guided wave propagation in foam core sandwich structures and detectability of damages using spectral analysis method are reported in this paper. An experimental study supported by theoretical evaluation of the guided wave characteristics is presented here that shows the applicability of Lamb wave type guided ultrasonic wave for detection of damage in foam core sandwich structures. Sandwich beam specimens were fabricated with 10 mm thick foam core and 0.3 mm thick aluminum face sheets. Thin piezoelectric patch actuators and sensors are used to excite and sense guided wave. Group velocity dispersion curves and frequency response of sensed signal are obtained experimentally. The nature of damping present in the sandwich panel is monitored by measuring the sensor signal amplitude at various different distances measured from the center of the linear phased array. Delaminations of increasing width are created and detected experimentally by pitch-catch interrogation with guided waves and wavelet transform of the sensed signal. Signal amplitudes are analyzed for various different sizes of damages to differentiate the damage size/severity. A sandwich panel is also fabricated with a planer dimension of 600 mm x 400 mm. Release film delamination is introduced during fabrication. Non-contact Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) is used to scan the panel while exciting with a surface bonded piezoelectric actuator. Presence of damage is confirmed by the reflected wave fringe pattern obtained from the LDV scan. With this approach it is possible to locate and monitor the damages by tracking the wave packets scattered from the damages.

Wave propagation in graphene sheet embedded in elastic medium (polymer matrix) has been a topic of great interest in nanomechanics of graphene sheets, where the equivalent continuum models are widely used. In this manuscript, we examined this issue by incorporating the nonlocal theory into the classical plate model. The influence of the nonlocal scale effects has been investigated in detail. The results are qualitatively different from those obtained based on the local/classical plate theory and thus, are important for the development of monolayer graphene-based nanodevices. In the present work, the graphene sheet is modeled as an isotropic plate of one-atom thick. The chemical bonds are assumed to be formed between the graphene sheet and the elastic medium. The polymer matrix is described by a Pasternak foundation model, which accounts for both normal pressure and the transverse shear deformation of the surrounding elastic medium. When the shear effects are neglected, the model reduces to Winkler foundation model. The normal pressure or Winkler elastic foundation parameter is approximated as a series of closely spaced, mutually independent, vertical linear elastic springs where the foundation modulus is assumed equivalent to stiffness of the springs. For this model, the nonlocal governing differential equations of motion are derived from the minimization of the total potential energy of the entire system. An ultrasonic type of flexural wave propagation model is also derived and the results of the wave dispersion analysis are shown for both local and nonlocal elasticity calculations. From this analysis we show that the elastic matrix highly affects the flexural wave mode and it rapidly increases the frequency band gap of flexural mode. The flexural wavenumbers obtained from nonlocal elasticity calculations are higher than the local elasticity calculations. The corresponding wave group speeds are smaller in nonlocal calculation as compared to local elasticity calculation. The effect of y-directional wavenumber (eta(q)) on the spectrum and dispersion relations of the graphene embedded in polymer matrix is also observed. We also show that the cut-off frequencies of flexural wave mode depends not only on the y-direction wavenumber but also on nonlocal scaling parameter (e(0)a). The effect of eta(q) and e(0)a on the cut-off frequency variation is also captured for the cases of with and without elastic matrix effect. For a given nanostructure, nonlocal small scale coefficient can be obtained by matching the results from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the nonlocal elasticity calculations. At that value of the nonlocal scale coefficient, the waves will propagate in the nanostructure at that cut-off frequency. In the present paper, different values of e(0)a are used. One can get the exact e(0)a for a given graphene sheet by matching the MD simulation results of graphene with the results presented in this article. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ultrasonic wave propagation in a graphene sheet, which is embedded in an elastic medium, is studied using nonlocal elasticity theory incorporating small-scale effects. The graphene sheet is modeled as an one-atom thick isotropic plate and the elastic medium/substrate is modeled as distributed springs. For this model, the nonlocal governing differential equations of motion are derived from the minimization of the total potential energy of the entire system. After that, an ultrasonic type of wave propagation model is also derived. The explicit expressions for the cut-off frequencies are also obtained as functions of the nonlocal scaling parameter and the y-directional wavenumber. Local elasticity shows that the wave will propagate even at higher frequencies. But nonlocal elasticity predicts that the waves can propagate only up to certain frequencies (called escape frequencies), after which the wave velocity becomes zero. The results also show that the escape frequencies are purely a function of the nonlocal scaling parameter. The effect of the elastic medium is captured in the wave dispersion analysis and this analysis is explained with respect to both local and nonlocal elasticity. The simulations show that the elastic medium affects only the flexural wave mode in the graphene sheet. The presence of the elastic matrix increases the band gap of the flexural mode. The present results can provide useful guidance for the design of next-generation nanodevices in which graphene-based composites act as a major element.

Electrical failure of insulation is known to be an extremal random process wherein nominally identical pro-rated specimens of equipment insulation, at constant stress fail at inordinately different times even under laboratory test conditions. In order to be able to estimate the life of power equipment, it is necessary to run long duration ageing experiments under accelerated stresses, to acquire and analyze insulation specific failure data. In the present work, Resin Impregnated Paper (RIP) a relatively new insulation system of choice used in transformer bushings, is taken as an example. The failure data has been processed using proven statistical methods, both graphical and analytical. The physical model governing insulation failure at constant accelerated stress has been assumed to be based on temperature dependent inverse power law model.

We consider a visual search problem studied by Sripati and Olson where the objective is to identify an oddball image embedded among multiple distractor images as quickly as possible. We model this visual search task as an active sequential hypothesis testing problem (ASHT problem). Chernoff in 1959 proposed a policy in which the expected delay to decision is asymptotically optimal. The asymptotics is under vanishing error probabilities. We first prove a stronger property on the moments of the delay until a decision, under the same asymptotics. Applying the result to the visual search problem, we then propose a ``neuronal metric'' on the measured neuronal responses that captures the discriminability between images. From empirical study we obtain a remarkable correlation (r = 0.90) between the proposed neuronal metric and speed of discrimination between the images. Although this correlation is lower than with the L-1 metric used by Sripati and Olson, this metric has the advantage of being firmly grounded in formal decision theory.

This paper considers sequential hypothesis testing in a decentralized framework. We start with two simple decentralized sequential hypothesis testing algorithms. One of which is later proved to be asymptotically Bayes optimal. We also consider composite versions of decentralized sequential hypothesis testing. A novel nonparametric version for decentralized sequential hypothesis testing using universal source coding theory is developed. Finally we design a simple decentralized multihypothesis sequential detection algorithm.

A regenerative or circulating-power method is presented in this paper for heat run test on the legs of a three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter. This test ensures that only losses are drawn from the dc supply, while rated power is circulated between the two legs, thus minimising wastage of energy. A proportional-resonant (PR) controller based current control scheme is proposed here for the circulating power test setup in NPC inverter. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the controller design at various operating conditions. Results of thermal test on the inverter legs are presented at two different operating conditions.

The safety of an in-service brick arch railway bridge is assessed through field testing and finite-element analysis. Different loading test train configurations have been used in the field testing. The response of the bridge in terms of displacements, strains, and accelerations is measured under the ambient and design train traffic loading conditions. Nonlinear fracture mechanics-based finite-element analyses are performed to assess the margin of safety. A parametric study is done to study the effects of tensile strength on the progress of cracking in the arch. Furthermore, a stability analysis to assess collapse of the arch caused by lateral movement at the springing of one of the abutments that is elastically supported is carried out. The margin of safety with respect to cracking and stability failure is computed. Conclusions are drawn with some remarks on the state of the bridge within the framework of the information available and inferred information. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)BE.1943-5592.0000338. Experimental and theoretical studies on degradation of composite-epoxy adhesive joints were carried out on samples having different interfacial and cohesive properties. Oblique incidence ultrasonic inspection of bonded joints revealed that degradation in the adhesive can be measured by significant variation in reflection amplitude as also by a shift in the minima of reflection spectrum. It was observed that severe degradation of the adhesive leads to failure dominated by interfacial mode. Through this investigation it is demonstrated that a correlation exists between the bond strength and a frequency shift in reflection minimum. The experimental data was validated using analytical models. Though both bulk adhesive degradation and interfacial degradation influences the shift in spectrum minimum, the contribution of the latter was found to be significant. An inversion algorithm was used to determine the interfacial transverse stiffness using the experimental oblique reflection spectrum. The spectrum shift was found to depend on the value of interfacial transverse stiffness using which a qualitative assessment can be made on the integrity of the joint.

Superplastic tensile tests on warm rolled and optimally annealed boron modified alloy Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B at a temperature of 850 degrees C and initial strain rate of 3 x 10(-4) s(-1) results in a higher elongation (similar to 500%) compared to the base alloy Ti-6Al-4V (similar to 400%). The improvement in superplasticity has been attributed to enhanced contribution from interfacial boundary sliding to the overall deformation for the boron modified alloy. The boundary sliding was facilitated by the starting microstructure which predominantly contains small equiaxed primary a grains with narrow size distribution. Dynamic processes such as coarsening and globularization of primary a phase occur under the test condition but do not significantly contribute to the observed difference in superplasticity between the two alloys. In spite of cavitation takes place around the TiB particles during deformation, they do not cause macroscopic cracking and early fracture by virtue of the cavities being extremely localized. Localized cavitation is found to correlate with increased material transfer due to faster diffusion.

Perception of operator influences ultrasound image acquisition and processing. Lower costs are attracting new users to medical ultrasound. Anticipating an increase in this trend, we conducted a study to quantify the variability in ultrasonic measurements made by novice users and identify methods to reduce it. We designed a protocol with four presets and trained four new users to scan and manually measure the head circumference of a fetal phantom with an ultrasound scanner. In the first phase, the users followed this protocol in seven distinct sessions. They then received feedback on the quality of the scans from an expert. In the second phase, two of the users repeated the entire protocol aided by visual cues provided to them during scanning. We performed off-line measurements on all the images using a fully automated algorithm capable of measuring the head circumference from fetal phantom images. The ground truth (198.1 +/- 1.6 mm) was based on sixteen scans and measurements made by an expert. Our analysis shows that: (1) the inter-observer variability of manual measurements was 5.5 mm, whereas the inter-observer variability of automated measurements was only 0.6 mm in the first phase (2) consistency of image appearance improved and mean manual measurements was 4-5 mm closer to the ground truth in the second phase (3) automated measurements were more precise, accurate and less sensitive to different presets compared to manual measurements in both phases. Our results show that visual aids and automation can bring more reproducibility to ultrasonic measurements made by new users.
