Starting from the early decades of the twentieth century, evolutionary biology began to acquire mathematical overtones. This took place via the development of a set of models in which the Darwinian picture of evolution was shown to be consistent with the laws of heredity discovered by Mendel. The models, which came to be elaborated over the years, define a field of study known as population genetics. Population genetics is generally looked upon as an essential component of modern evolutionary theory. This article deals with a famous dispute between J. B. S. Haldane, one of the founders of population genetics, and Ernst Mayr, a major contributor to the way we understand evolution. The philosophical undercurrents of the dispute remain relevant today. Mayr and Haldane agreed that genetics provided a broad explanatory framework for explaining how evolution took place but differed over the relevance of the mathematical models that sought to underpin that framework. The dispute began with a fundamental issue raised by Mayr in 1959: in terms of understanding evolution, did population genetics contribute anything beyond the obvious? Haldane's response came just before his death in 1964. It contained a spirited defense, not just of population genetics, but also of the motivations that lie behind mathematical modelling in biology. While the difference of opinion persisted and was not glossed over, the two continued to maintain cordial personal relations.

Crystallization behaviors of the glass with a composition of 25Li(2)O.25B(2)O(3).50GeO(2) corresponding to lithium borogermanate LiBGeO4 have been examined. It has been confirmed that the LiBGeO4 crystalline phase is formed at the surface of heat-treated glasses. The second harmonic (SH) generation is found from transparent surface crystallized glasses, demonstrating for the first time that the LiBGeO4 phase shows optical nonlinearity. The SH intensity of LiBGeO4 crystallites (powdered state) prepared through crystallization is about ten times as large as that of pulverized alpha-quartz. The SH intensity of transparent crystallized glasses (bulk state) with crystalline layers of 3-4.5 mum thickness increases with increasing heat treatment temperature (540-560degreesC) and time (1-6 h), and the maximum SH intensity among the samples studied is in the order of 1/10 in comparison with that of alpha-quartz single crystal. The transparent crystallized glass obtained by heat treatment at 550alphaC for 3 h exhibits a clear and fine Maker fringe pattern, indicating a highly orientation of LiBGeO4 crystals at the surface.

Glass nanocomposites in the system (1-x)Li2B4O7-xBi(2)WO(6) (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.35, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. The as-quenched samples were X-ray amorphous. Differential Thermal Analyses (DTA) confirmed their glassy nature. The composites on heat-treatment at 720 K yielded monophasic crystalline bismuth tungstate in lithium borate glass matrix. The average size and the spherical nature of the dispersed crystallites were assessed via High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The dielectric constants (epsilon(r)) of both the as-quenched and post heat-treated composites were found to increase with increase in x (bismuth tungstate content) at all the frequencies (100 Hz-40 MHz) in the temperature range 300 K-870 K. While the dielectric loss (D) decreased with increasing x. The pyroelectric coefficients of the as-quenched (consisting 20 nm sized crystallites) and 720 K heat-treated sample (x = 0.3) were determined as a function of temperature (300 K-873 K) and the values obtained at room temperature were 20 and 60 muC/m(2) K respectively. The as-quenched and heat-treated (720 K) glass nanocomposites exhibited ferroelectric (P Vs E) hysteresis loops. The remnant polarization and coercive field of the heat-treated glass nanocomposite at 300 K were respectively 2.597 muC/cm(2) and 543 V/cm. These glass nanocomposites were birefringent in the 300-873 K temperature range.

Transparent glasses in the system (1−x)Li2B4O7–xBi2WO6 (0≤x≤0.35) were prepared via melt quenching technique. Differential thermal analysis was employed to characterize the as-quenched glasses. Glass-ceramics with high optical transparency were obtained by controlled heat-treatment of the glasses at 720 K for 6 h. The amorphous nature of the as-quenched glass and crystallinity of glass-ceramics were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction studies. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) shows the presence of nearly spherical nanocrystallites of Bi2WO6 in Li2B4O7 glass matrix. Capacitance and dielectric loss measurements were carried out as a function of temperature (300–870 K) in the frequency range 100 Hz–40 MHz. Impedance spectroscopy employed to rationalize the electrical behavior of glasses and glass-ceramics suggest the coexistence of electronic and ionic conduction in these materials. The thermal activation energies for the electronic conduction and ionic conduction were also estimated based on the Arrhenius plots.

The applicability of the confusion principle and size factor in glass formation has been explored by following different combinations of isoelectronic Ti, Zr and Hf metals. Four alloys of nominal composition Zr41.5Ti41.5Ni17, Zr41.5Hf41.5Ni17, Zr25Ti25Cu50 and Zr34Ti16Cu50 have been rapidly solidified to obtain an amorphous phase and their crystallisation behaviour has been studied. The Ti-Zr-Ni alloy crystallises in three steps. Initially this alloy precipitates icosahedral quasicrystalline phase, which on further heat treatment precipitates cF96 Zr2Ni phase. The Zr-Hf-Ni alloy can not be amorphised under the same experimental conditions. The amorphous Zr-Ti-Cu alloys at the initial stages of crystallisation phase-separateinto two amorphous phases and then on further heat treatment cF24 Cu5Zr and oC68 Cu10Zr7 phase are precipitated. The lower glass-forming abilityof Zr-Hf-Ni alloy and the crystallisation behaviour of the above alloys has been studied. The rationale behind nanoquasicrystallisation and the formation of other intermetallic phases has been explained.

Nanostructured materials have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their properties which differ strongly from their bulk phase and potential applications in nanoscale electronic and optoelectronic devices. Metal oxide nanostructures can be synthesized by variety of different synthesis techniques developed in recent years such as thermal decomposition, sol-gel technique, chemical coprecipitation, hydrothermal process, solvothermal process, spray pyrolysis, polyol process etc. All the above processes go through a tedious synthesis procedure followed by prolonged heat treatment at elevated temperature and are time consuming. In the present work we describe a rapid microwave irradiation-assisted chemical synthesis technique for the growth of nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanotubes of a variety of metal oxides in the presence of an appropriate surfactant, without the use of any templates The method is simple, inexpensive, and helps one to prepare nanostructures in a very simple way, and in a very short time, measured in minutes. The synthesis procedure employs high quality metalorganic complexes (typically -diketonates) featuring a direct metal-to-oxygen bond in its molecular structure. The complex is dissolved in a suitable solvent, often with a surfactant added, and the solution then subjected to microwave irradiation in a domestic microwave oven operating at 2.45 GHz frequency with power varying from 160-800 W, from a few seconds to a few minutes, leading to the formation of corresponding metal oxides. This method has been used successfully to synthesize nanostructures of a variety of binary and ternary metal oxides such as ZnO, CdO, Fe2O3, CuO, Ga2O3, Gd2O3, ZnFe2O4, etc. There is an observed variation in the morphology of the nanostructures with the change of different parameters such as microwave power, irradiation time, appropriate solvent, surfactant type and concentration. Cationic, anionic, nonionic and polymeric surfactants have been used to generate a variety of nanostructures. Even so, to remove the surfactant, there is either no need of heat treatment or a very brief exposure to heat suffices, to yield highly pure and crystalline oxide materials as prepared. By adducting the metal complexes, the shape of the nanostructures can be controlled further. In this manner, very well formed, single-crystalline, hexagonal nanorods and nanotubes of ZnO have been formed. Adducting the zinc complex leads to the formation of tapered ZnO nanorods with a very fine tip, suitable for electron emission applications. Particle size and their monodispersity can be controlled by a suitable choice of a precursor complex, the surfactant, and its concentration. The resulting metal oxide nanostructures have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and electron emission measurements.

In this article, the effect of initial microstructure on the texture evolution in 2014 Al alloy during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) through route A has been reported. Three heat treatment conditions were chosen to generate the initial microstructures, namely (i) the recrystallization anneal (as-received), (ii) solution treatment at 768 K for 1 h, and (iii) solution treatment (768 K for 1 h) plus aging at 468 K for 5 h. Texture analyses were performed using orientation distribution function (ODF) method. The texture strength after ECAP processing was different for the three samples in the order, solutionised > solutionised plus aged condition > as-received. The prominent texture components were A (E) /(A) over bar (E) and B(E)/(B) over bar (E) in addition to several weaker components for the three materials. The strong texture evolution in solutionised condition has been attributed to higher strain hardening of the matrix due to higher amount of solute. In case of the as-received as well as solutionised plus aged alloy, the weaker texture could be due to the strain scattering from extensive precipitate fragmentation and dissolution during ECAP.

Synthesis of nanoparticles of Ni-Zn ferrite dispersed in aniline formaldehyde copolymer using a room temperature route and the effect of heat treatment on these samples were studied using XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy and TEM microscopy. The results show the formation of nanosized particles of Ni-Zn ferrite in the polymer matrix at room temperature. On pyrolysis, the Ni-Zn ferrite phase persists up to 500 degreesC. However, heating of composites to 700 degreesC results in the partial reduction of the spinet ferrite leading to the formation of Ni-Fe alloy under ambient conditions and complete reduction of the alloy on heating in inert atmosphere. An integrated reservoir operation model is presented for developing effective operational policies for irrigation water management. In arid and semi-arid climates, owing to dynamic changes in the hydroclimatic conditions within a season, the fixed cropping pattern with conventional operating policies, may have considerable impact on the performance of the irrigation system and may affect the economics of the farming community. For optimal allocation of irrigation water in a season, development of effective mathematical models may guide the water managers in proper decision making and consequently help in reducing the adverse effects of water shortage and crop failure problems. This paper presents a multi-objective integrated reservoir operation model for multi-crop irrigation system. To solve the multi-objective model, a recent swarm intelligence technique, namely elitist-mutated multi-objective particle swarm optimisation (EM-MOPSO) has been used and applied to a case study in India. The method evolves effective strategies for irrigation crop planning and operation policies for a reservoir system, and thereby helps farming community in improving crop benefits and water resource usage in the reservoir command area.

Phase transformation behaviour of amorphous electroless Ni-B coating with a targeted composition of Ni-6wt% B is characterized in conjunction with microstructural development and hardness. Microscopic observations of the as-deposited coating display a novel microstructure which is already phase separated at multiple length scales. Spherical colonies of similar to 5 mu m consist of 2-3 mu m nodular regions which are surrounded by similar to 2-3 mu m region that contains fine bands ranging from 10 to 70 nm in width. The appearance of three crystalline phases in this binary system at different stages of heat treatment and the concomitant variation in hardness are shown to arise from nanoscale fluctuations in the as-deposited boron content from 4 to 8 wt%. High temperature annealing reveals continuous crystallization up to 430 degrees C, overlapping with the domain of B loss due to diffusion into the substrate. The implications of such a microstructure for optimal heat treatment procedures are discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The approach taken in this paper in order to modify the scattering features of electrons and phonons and improve the figure of merit (ZT) of thermoelectric PbTe is to alter the microstructure at constant chemistry. A lamellar pattern of PbTe/GeTe at the nano- and microscale was produced in Pb(0.36)Ge(0.64)Te alloy by the diffusional decomposition of a supersaturated solid solution. The mechanism of nanostructuration is most likely a discontinuous spinodal decomposition. A simple model relating the interface velocity to the observed lamellar spacing is proposed. The effects of nanostructuration in Pb(0.36)Ge(0.64)Te alloy on the electrical and thermal conductivity, thermopower and ZT were investigated. It was shown that nanostructuration through the formation of a lamellar pattern of PbTe/GeTe is unlikely to provide a significant improvement due to the occurrence of discontinuous coarsening. However, the present study allows an analysis of possible strategies to improve thermoelectric materials via optimal design of the microstructure and optimized heat treatment. We have demonstrated the synthesis of light-sensitive polyelectrolyte capsules (PECs) by utilizing a novel polyol reduction method and investigated its applicability as photosensitive drug delivery vehicle. The nanostructured capsules were prepared via layer by layer (LbL) assembly of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAN) and dextran sulfate (DS) on silica particles followed by in-situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (NPs). Capsules without silver NPs were permeable to low molecular weight (A(w), 479 g/mol) rhodamine but impermeable to higher molecular weight fluorescence labeled dextran (FITC-dextran). However, capsules synthesized with silver NPs showed porous morphology and were permeable to higher molecular weight (M(w) 70 kDa) FITC-dextran also. These capsules were loaded with FITC-dextran using thermal encapsulation method by exploiting temperature induced shrinking of the capsules. During heat treatment the porous morphology of the capsules transformed into smooth pore free structure which prevents the movement of dextran into bulk during the loading process. When these loaded capsules are exposed to laser pulses, the capsule wall ruptured, resulting in the release of the loaded drug/dye. The rupture of the capsules was dependent on particle size, laser pulse energy and exposure time. The release was linear with time when pulse energy of 400 mu J was used and burst release was observed when pulse energy increased to 600 mu J.

Transparent glasses in the BaO-Na2O-B2O3 (BNBO) system were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The amorphous and the glassy nature of the as-quenched samples were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA), respectively. Cyclic heat treatment of the as-quenched glasses yielded transparent glass-microcrystal composites. The volume fraction of the crystallites and their sizes could be easily controlled by this process. Heat-treated samples were highly transparent owing to the minimum mismatch between the refractive indices of the crystallites and the glass residual matrix. BNBO samples that were heat treated at 540A degrees C for 4 h for 10 cycles were found to be 60% to 70% transparent in the 500 nm to 900 nm wavelength range.

Hexagonal Dy(OH)(3) and cubic Dy2O3 nanorods were prepared by hydrothermal method. Dy(OH)(3) nanorods was directly obtained at 180 degrees C for 20 h after hydrothermal treatment whereas subsequently heat treatment at 750 degrees C for 2 h gives pure cubic Dy2O3. SEM micrographs reveal that needle shaped rods with different sizes were observed in both the phases. TEM results also confirm this. The TL response of hexagonal Dy(OH)(3) and cubic Dy2O3 nanorods have been analyzed for gamma-irradiation over a wide range of exposures (1-5 kGy). TL glow peak intensity increases with gamma dose in both the phases. The activation energy (E), order of kinetics (6), and frequency factor (s) for both the phases have been determined using Chen's peak shape method. The simple glow curve shape, structure and linear response to gamma-irradiation over a large span of exposures makes the cubic Dy2O3 as a useful dosimetric material to estimate high exposures of gamma-rays. This paper deals with the influence of crystallographic texture on room temperature mechanical behavior of the sheets of the aluminum alloy AA7020 processed to different thicknesses. Three different thicknesses of the alloy sheet, namely 1, 1.85, and 3.6 mm, corresponding to different textures were investigated. Tensile tests were carried out at 0°, 45° and 90° with respect to sheet rolling direction and the resulting in-plane anisotropy in 0.2 proof stress, work hardening and plastic strain ratio (r-value) were determined. Texture derived r-values are also calculated and discussed vis-à -vis the experimentally obtained r-values. Finally the formability of the optimal alloy was studied using forming limit diagrams. Effect of natural aging, with a simulated heat treatment of 70 °C for 2 h on FLD was studied and compared with the as solutionized samples. It was observed that, the strain levels in the bi-axial region of the FLD were not much affected by the heat treatment. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
