In the present investigation, basic studies were conducted using Inclined pin-on-plate sliding Tester to understand the role of surface texture of hard material against soft materials during sliding. Soft materials such as Al-Mg alloy, pure Al and pure Mg were used as pins and 080 M40 steel was used as plate in the tests. Two surface parameters of steel plates — roughness and texture — were varied in tests. It was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction which has two components, namely adhesion and plowing component, are controlled by the surface texture of harder material. For the case of Al-Mg alloy, stick-slip phenomenon was absent under both dry and lubricated conditions. However, for the case of Al, it was observed only under lubricated conditions while for the case of Mg, it was observed under both dry and lubricated conditions. Further, it was observed that the amplitude of stick-slip motion primarily depends on plowing component of friction. The plowing component of friction was highest for the surface that promotes plane strain conditions near the surface and was lowest for the surface that promotes plane stress conditions near the surface.

Workstation clusters equipped with high performance interconnect having programmable network processors facilitate interesting opportunities to enhance the performance of parallel application run on them. In this paper, we propose schemes where certain application level processing in parallel database query execution is performed on the network processor. We evaluate the performance of TPC-H queries executing on a high end cluster where all tuple processing is done on the host processor, using a timed Petri net model, and find that tuple processing costs on the host processor dominate the execution time. These results are validated using a small cluster. We therefore propose 4 schemes where certain tuple processing activity is offloaded to the network processor. The first 2 schemes offload the tuple splitting activity - computation to identify the node on which to process the tuples, resulting in an execution time speedup of 1.09 relative to the base scheme, but with I/O bus becoming the bottleneck resource. In the 3rd scheme in addition to offloading tuple processing activity, the disk and network interface are combined to avoid the I/O bus bottleneck, which results in speedups up to 1.16, but with high host processor utilization. Our 4th scheme where the network processor also performs apart of join operation along with the host processor, gives a speedup of 1.47 along with balanced system resource utilizations. Further we observe that the proposed schemes perform equally well even in a scaled architecture i.e., when the number of processors is increased from 2 to 64

In the present investigation, soft materials, such as Al-4Mg alloy, high-purity Al and pure Mg pins were slid against hard steel plates of various surface textures to study the response of materials during sliding. The experiments were conducted using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding apparatus under both dry and lubricated conditions in an ambient environment. Two kinds of frictional response, namely steady-state and stick-slip, were observed during sliding. In general, the response was dependent on material pair, normal load, lubrication, and surface texture of the harder material. More specifically, for the case of Al-4Mg alloy, the stick-slip response was absent under both dry and lubricated conditions. For Al, stick-slip was observed only under lubricated conditions. For the case of Mg, the stick-slip response was seen under both dry and lubricated conditions. Further, it was observed that the amplitude of stick-slip motion primarily depends on the plowing component of friction. The plowing component of friction was the highest for the surfaces that promoted plane strain conditions and was the lowest for the surfaces that promoted plane stress conditions near the surface.

In the present investigation, various kinds of textures, namely, unidirectional, 8-ground, and random were attained on the die surfaces. Roughness of the textures was varied using different grits of emery papers or polishing powders. Then pins made of Al-4Mg alloys were slid against steel plates at various numbers of cycles, namely, 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 using pin-on-plate reciprocating sliding tester. Tests were conducted at a sliding velocity of 2 minis in ambient conditions under both dry and lubricated conditions. A constant normal load of 35 N was applied in the tests. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the pins and the formation of transfer layer on the counter surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Surface roughness parameters of the plates were measured using an optical profilometer. In the experiments, it was observed that the coefficient of friction and formation of the transfer layer depend on the die surface textures under both dry and lubricated conditions. More specifically, the coefficient of friction decreases for unidirectional and 8-ground surfaces while for random surfaces it increases with number of cycles. However, the coefficient of friction is highest for the sliding perpendicular to the unidirectional textures and least for the random textures under both dry and lubricated conditions. The difference in friction values between these two surfaces decreases with increasing number of cycles. The variation in the coefficient of friction under both dry and lubrication conditions is attributed to the change in texture of the surfaces during sliding. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The possible chemical reactions that take place during the growth of single crystal films of silicon on sapphire (SOS) are analyzed thermodynamically. The temperature for the growth of good quality epitaxial films is dependent on the extent of water vapor present in the carrier gas. The higher the water vapor content the higher the temperature needed to grow SOS films. Due to the interaction of silicon with sapphire at elevated temperatures, SOS films are doped with aluminum. The extent of doping is dependent on the conditions of film growth. The doping by aluminum from the substrate increases with increasing growth temperatures and decreasing growth rates. The equilibrium concentrations of aluminum at the silicon-sapphire interface are calculated as a function of deposition temperature, assuming that SiO2 or Al6Si2O13 are the products of reaction. It is most likely that the product could be a solid solutio n of Al2O3 in SiO2. The total amount of aluminum released due to the interaction between silicon and sapphire will account only for the formation of not more than one monolayer of reaction product unless the films are annealed long enough at elevated temperatures. This value is in good agreement with the recently reported observations employing high resolution transmission electron microscopy.

The tension-softening parameters for different concrete-concrete interfaces are determined using the bimaterial cracked hinge model. Beams of different sizes having a jointed interface between two different strengths of concrete are tested under three-point bending (TPB). The load versus crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) results are used to obtain the stress-crack opening relation through an inverse analysis. In addition, the fracture energy, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity are also computed from the inverse analysis. The fracture properties are used in the nonlinear fracture mechanics analysis of a concrete patch-repaired beam to determine its load-carrying capacity when repaired with concrete of different strengths.

Tribological interaction often generates new structures and materials which form the interface between the sliding pair. The new material designated tribofilm here may be protective or tribologically deleterious. The tribofilm plays a major role in determining the friction and wear of the interaction. Here, we give three examples: mechanically mixed, chemically generated and thermally activated, of tribofilms formed in three different tribological systems and speculate on the mechanism of their formation.

Surfactant protein A (SP-A), which is a lung innate immune system component, is known to bind glycolipids present at the cell surface of a mycobacterial pathogen. Lipoarabinomannan (LAM), a component of mycobacterial thick, waxy cell wall, is one of the glycolipid ligands for SP-A. In order to assess binding of synthetic glycolipids with SP-A and the glycosidic linkage preferences for the interaction, beta-arabinofuranoside trisaccharide glycolipids constituted with beta-(1 -> 2), beta-(1 -> 3) and beta-(1 -> 2), beta-(1 -> 5) linkages relevant to LAM were synthesized through chemical glycosylations. The efficacies of synthetic glycolipids to interact with SP-A were assessed by using the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique, from which association-dissociation rate constants and equilibrium binding constants were derived. The equilibrium binding constants of the interaction of two constitutionally varying beta-arabinofuranoside glycolipids with SP-A were found to be in the millimolar range. A comparison of the results with few alpha-anomeric arabinofuranoside glycolipids showed that glycolipids with beta-anomeric linkages were having relatively lower equilibrium binding constants than those with alpha-anomeric linkages in binding to the protein, whereas oligosaccharides alone, without lipidic chains, exhibited higher equilibrium binding constants. Further, the synthetic compounds inhibited the growth of mycobacteria and affected sliding motilities of the bacteria, although to an extent relatively lesser than that of synthetic compounds constituted with alpha-anomeric linkages.

In eukaryotic organisms clathrin-coated vesicles are instrumental in the processes of endocytosis as well as intracellular protein trafficking. Hence, it is important to understand how these vesicles have evolved across eukaryotes, to carry cargo molecules of varied shapes and sizes. The intricate nature and functional diversity of the vesicles are maintained by numerous interacting protein partners of the vesicle system. However, to delineate functionally important residues participating in protein-protein interactions of the assembly is a daunting task as there are no high-resolution structures of the intact assembly available. The two cryoEM structures closely representing intact assembly were determined at very low resolution and provide positions of C alpha atoms alone. In the present study, using the method developed by us earlier, we predict the protein-protein interface residues in clathrin assembly, taking guidance from the available low-resolution structures. The conservation status of these interfaces when investigated across eukaryotes, revealed a radial distribution of evolutionary constraints, i.e., if the members of the clathrin vesicular assembly can be imagined to be arranged in spherical manner, the cargo being at the center and clathrins being at the periphery, the detailed phylogenetic analysis of these members of the assembly indicated high-residue variation in the members of the assembly closer to the cargo while high conservation was noted in clathrins and in other proteins at the periphery of the vesicle. This points to the strategy adopted by the nature to package diverse proteins but transport them through a highly conserved mechanism.

There is a research knowledge gap for the dry wear data of nitride treated Stainless Steel in high temperature and high vacuum environment. In order to fill this gap, plasma nitriding was done on austenitic Stainless Steel type AISI 316LN (316LN SS) and dry sliding wear tests have been conducted at 25 degrees C, 200 degrees C and 400 degrees C in high vacuum of 1.6 x 10(-4) bar. The two different slider material (316LN SS and Colmonoy) and two different sliding speeds (0.0576 m/s and 0.167 m/s) have been used. The tribological parameters such as friction coefficient, wear mechanism and volume of metal loss have been evaluated. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to study the surface morphology of the worn pins and rings. Electronic balancing machine was used to record the mass of metal loss during wear tests. The 2D optical profilometer was used to measure the depth of the wear track. The Plasma Nitride treated 316LN SS rings (PN rings) exhibit excellent wear resistance against 316LN SS pin and Colmonoy pin at all temperatures. However, PN ring vs. Colmonoy pin Pair shows better wear resistance than PN ring vs. 316LN SS pin Pair at higher temperature. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
