Based on the an earlier CFD analysis of the performance of the gas-dynamically controlled laser cavity [1]it was found that there is possibility of optimizing the geometry of the diffuser that can bring about reductions in both size and cost of the system by examining the critical dimensional requirements of the diffuser. Consequently,an extensive CFD analysis has been carried out for a range of diffuser configurations by simulating the supersonic flow through the arrangement including the laser cavity driven by a bank of converging – diverging nozzles and the diffuser. The numerical investigations with 3D-RANS code are carried out to capture the flow patterns through diffusers past the cavity that has multiple supersonic jet interactions with shocks leading to complex flow pattern. Varying length of the diffuser plates is made to be the basic parameter of the study. The analysis reveals that the pressure recovery pattern during the flow through the diffuser from the simulation, being critical for the performance of the laser device shows its dependence on the diffuser length is weaker beyond a critical lower limit and this evaluation of this limit would provide a design guideline for a more efficient system configuration. The observation based on the parametric study shows that the pressure recovery transients in the near vicinity of the cavity is not affected for the reduction in the length of the diffuser plates up to its 10% of the initial size, indicating the design in the first configuration that was tested experimentally has a large factor of margin. The flow stability in the laser cavity is found to be unaffected since a strong and stable shock is located at the leading edge of the diffuser plates while the downstream shock and flow patterns are changed, as one would expect. Results of the study for the different lengths of diffusers in the range of 10% to its full length are presented, keeping the experimentally tested configuration used in the earlier study [1] as the reference length. The conclusions drawn from the analysis is found to be of significance since it provides new design considerations based on the understanding of the intricacies of the flow, allowing for a hardware optimization that can lead to substantial size reduction of the device with no loss of performance.

In the present investigation, basic studies were conducted using Inclined pin-on-plate sliding Tester to understand the role of surface texture of hard material against soft materials during sliding. Soft materials such as Al-Mg alloy, pure Al and pure Mg were used as pins and 080 M40 steel was used as plate in the tests. Two surface parameters of steel plates — roughness and texture — were varied in tests. It was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction which has two components, namely adhesion and plowing component, are controlled by the surface texture of harder material. For the case of Al-Mg alloy, stick-slip phenomenon was absent under both dry and lubricated conditions. However, for the case of Al, it was observed only under lubricated conditions while for the case of Mg, it was observed under both dry and lubricated conditions. Further, it was observed that the amplitude of stick-slip motion primarily depends on plowing component of friction. The plowing component of friction was highest for the surface that promotes plane strain conditions near the surface and was lowest for the surface that promotes plane stress conditions near the surface.

In the present investigation, soft materials, such as Al-4Mg alloy, high-purity Al and pure Mg pins were slid against hard steel plates of various surface textures to study the response of materials during sliding. The experiments were conducted using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding apparatus under both dry and lubricated conditions in an ambient environment. Two kinds of frictional response, namely steady-state and stick-slip, were observed during sliding. In general, the response was dependent on material pair, normal load, lubrication, and surface texture of the harder material. More specifically, for the case of Al-4Mg alloy, the stick-slip response was absent under both dry and lubricated conditions. For Al, stick-slip was observed only under lubricated conditions. For the case of Mg, the stick-slip response was seen under both dry and lubricated conditions. Further, it was observed that the amplitude of stick-slip motion primarily depends on the plowing component of friction. The plowing component of friction was the highest for the surfaces that promoted plane strain conditions and was the lowest for the surfaces that promoted plane stress conditions near the surface.

We review here our understanding of the sliding wear phenomenon: some generalities have emerged in the last 50 years of research, these can now be taken as established principles and be used for practical design and maintenance. Other issues related for example to nano-wear, the role of microstructure on wear or mechanism of crack nucleation require renewed efforts, for greater predictivity in wear. The review is based on published literature with examples principally drawn from our work on sliding wear of metals and ceramics.

A chemoselective reduction of olefins and acetylenes is demonstrated by employing catalytic amounts of ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O) and aqueous hydrazine (NH2NH2 center dot H2O) as hydrogen source at room temperature. The reduction is chemoselective and tolerates a variety of reducible functional groups. Unlike other metal-catalysed reduction methods, the present method employs a minimum amount of aqueous hydrazine (1.5-2 equiv.). Also, the scope of this method is demonstrated in the synthesis of ibuprofen in aqueous medium.

A mild, environmentally friendly method for reduction of aromatic nitro group to amine is reported, using zinc powder in aqueous solutions of chelating ethers. The donor ether acts as a ligand and also serves as a co-solvent. Water is the proton source. This procedure is also a new method for the activation of zinc for electron transfer reduction of aromatic nitro compounds. The reduction is accomplished in a neutral medium and other reducing groups remained unaffected. The ethers used are dioxolane, 1,4-dioxane, ethoxymethoxyethane, dimethoxymethane, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, and diglyme.

Various 1-acyl-2,4,10-trioxaadamantanes were prepared from the corresponding 1-methoxycarbonyl derivatives, via conversion to the N-acylpiperidine derivatives followed by reaction with a Grignard reagent in refluxing THF. These alpha-keto orthoformates were converted to the corresponding imines with 1-(S)-phenethyl amine (TiCl4/Et3N/toluene/reflux), with the Schiff bases being reduced further with NaBH4 (MeOH/0 degrees C) into the corresponding 1-(S)-phenethyl amines (diastereomeric excess 91:9 by NMR). Hydrogenolysis of the phenethyl group (Pd-C/MeOH) finally led to the 1-(aminoalkyl)trioxaadamantanes, which are chiral C-protected alpha-amino acids, in excellent overall yields. This work aims at dimensional reduction of non-linear isotropic hyperelastic plates in an asymptotically accurate manner. The problem is both geometrically and materially non-linear. The geometric non-linearity is handled by allowing for finite deformations and generalized warping while the material non-linearity is incorporated through hyperelastic material model. The development, based on the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) with moderate strains and very small thickness to shortest wavelength of the deformation along the plate reference surface as small parameters, begins with three-dimensional (3-D) non-linear elasticity and mathematically splits the analysis into a one-dimensional (1-D) through-the-thickness analysis and a two-dimensional (2-D) plate analysis. Major contributions of this paper are derivation of closed-form analytical expressions for warping functions and stiffness coefficients and a set of recovery relations to express approximately the 3-D displacement, strain and stress fields. Consistent with the 2-D non-linear constitutive laws, 2-D plate theory and corresponding finite element program have been developed. Validation of present theory is carried out with a standard test case and the results match well. Distributions of 3-D results are provided for another test case. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. A brief overview of our group research activities is given and the concept of donor acceptor is described for the development of conjugated polymers for optoelectronic devices. In particular, a new family of conjugated polymers based on dithienopyrrole has been synthesized to demonstrate the concept of donor-acceptor. The dithienopyrrole was coupled to benzodithiophene via Stille coupling to obtain two low band gap polymers P5a and P5b having -C18H37 and -2-ethylhexyl alkyl chain respectively. Both the polymers exhibit absorption within the solar spectrum with an optical band gap below 2 eV. Atomic force microscopy revealed that both the polymers form smooth film with roughness of 2.4 nm and photoluminescence measurement of polymer/fullerene derivative blend film suggests effective dissociation of exciton.
