This paper deals with the influence of crystallographic texture on room temperature mechanical behavior of the sheets of the aluminum alloy AA7020 processed to different thicknesses. Three different thicknesses of the alloy sheet, namely 1, 1.85, and 3.6 mm, corresponding to different textures were investigated. Tensile tests were carried out at 0°, 45° and 90° with respect to sheet rolling direction and the resulting in-plane anisotropy in 0.2 proof stress, work hardening and plastic strain ratio (r-value) were determined. Texture derived r-values are also calculated and discussed vis-à -vis the experimentally obtained r-values. Finally the formability of the optimal alloy was studied using forming limit diagrams. Effect of natural aging, with a simulated heat treatment of 70 °C for 2 h on FLD was studied and compared with the as solutionized samples. It was observed that, the strain levels in the bi-axial region of the FLD were not much affected by the heat treatment. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Polycrystalline powders of Ba1-xCaxBi4Ti4O15 (where x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1) were prepared via the conventional solid-state reaction route. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering techniques have been employed to probe into the structural changes on changing x. XRD analyses confirmed the formation of monophasic bismuth layered structure of all the above compositions with an increase in orthorhombic distortion with increase in x. Raman spectra revealed a redshift in A(1g) peak and an increase in the B-2g/B-3g splitting with increasing Ca content. The average grain size was found to increase with increasing x. The temperature of the maximum dielectric constant (T-m) increased linearly with increasing Ca-content whereas the diffuseness of the phase transition was found to decrease with the end member CaBi4Ti4O15 showing a frequency independent sharp phase transition around 1048 K. Ca doping resulted in a decrease in the remnant polarization and an increase in the coercive field. Ba0.75Ca0.25Bi4Ti4O15 ceramics showed an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient d(33) of 15 pC N-1 at room temperature. Low values of dielectric losses and tunability of temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (tau(epsilon)) in the present solid-solution suggest that these compounds can be of potential use in microwave dielectrics at high temperatures. New ternary copper (II) complexes, Cu(L-orn)(B)(Cl)](Cl center dot 2H(2)O) (1-2) where L-orn is L-ornithine, B is an N,N-donor heterocyclic base, viz. 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 1) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 2), were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Complex 2 is characterized by the X-ray single crystallographic method. The complex shows a distorted square-pyramidal (4 + 1) CuN3OCl coordination sphere. Binding interactions of the complexes with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) were investigated by UV-Vis absorption titration, ethidium bromide displacement assay, viscometric titration experiment and DNA melting studies. Complex 2 shows appreciable chemical nuclease activity in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA). The complexes were subjected to in vitro cytotoxicity studies against carcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A-549) and human epithelial (HEp-2) cells. The IC50 values of 1 and 2 are less than that of cisplatin against HEp-2 cell lines. MIC values for 1 against the bacterial strains Streptococcus mutans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are 0.5 mM. A series of Pr3+ (1-9 mol%) doped CdSiO3 nanophosphors have been prepared for the first time by a low temperature solution combustion method using oxalyldihydrizide (ODH) as a fuel. The final product was characterized by Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The average crystallite size was calculated using Debye-Scherrer's formula and Williamson-Hall (W-H) plots and found to be in the range 31-37 nm. The optical energy band gap (E-g) of undoped for Pr3+ doped samples were estimated from Tauc relation which varies from 5.15-5.36 eV. Thermoluminescence (TL) properties of Pr3+ doped CdSiO3 nanophosphor has been investigated using gamma-irradiation in the dose range 1-6 kGy at a heating rate of 5 degrees C s(-1). The phosphor shows a well resolved glow peak at similar to 171 degrees C along with shouldered peak at 223 degrees C in the higher temperature side. It is observed that TL intensity increase with increase of Pr3+ concentration. Further, the TL intensity at 171 degrees C is found to be increase linearly with increase in gamma-dose which is highly useful in radiation dosimetry. The kinetic parameters such as activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics was estimated by Luschiks method and the results are discussed. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. A mixed-metal metal-organic framework (MOF) compound NiMn2{C6H3(COO)(3)}(2)], I, is prepared hydrothermally by replacing one of the octahedral Mn2+ ions in Mn-3{C6H3(COO)(3)}(2)] by Ni2+ ions. Magnetic studies on I suggest antiferromagnetic interactions with weak canted antiferromagnetism below 8 K. On heating in flowing air I transforms to NiMn2O4 spinel at low temperature (T < 400 degrees C). The thermal decomposition of I at different temperatures results in NiMn2O4 with particle sizes in the nano regime. The nanoparticle nature of NiMn2O4 was confirmed using PXRD and TEM studies. Magnetic studies on the nanoparticles of NiMn2O4 indicate ferrimagnetism. The transition temperature of NiMn2O4 nanoparticles exhibits a direct correlation with the particle size. This study highlights the usefulness of MOF compound as a single-source precursor for the preparation of important ceramic oxides with better control on the stoichiometry and particle size.

Success in the advancement of thermoacoustic field led the researchers to develop the thermoacoustic engines which found its applications in various fields such as refrigeration, gas mixture separation, natural gas liquefaction, and cryogenics. The objective of this study is to design and fabricate the twin thermoacoustic heat engine (TAHE) producing the acoustic waves with high resonance frequencies which is used to drive a thermoacoustic refrigerator efficiently by the influence of geometrical parameters and working fluids. Twin TAHE has gained significant attention due to the production of high intensity acoustic waves than single TAHE. In order to drive an efficient thermoacoustic refrigerator, a twin thermoacoustic heat engine is built up and its performance are analysed by varying the resonator length and working fluid. The performance is measured in terms of onset temperature difference, resonance frequency and pressure amplitude of the oscillations generated from twin TAHE. The simulation is performed using free software DeltaEC, from LANL, USA. The simulated DeltaEC results are compared with experimental results and the deviations are found within +10%.

New metal complexes of the type M(nih)(L)](PF6)(n)center dot xAH(2)O and M(nih)(2)](PF6)center dot xH(2)O (where M = Co(III) or Ni(II), L = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)/or 2,2' bipyridine (bpy), nih = 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone, n = 2 or 1 and x = 3 or 2) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic, IR and H-1 NMR spectral data. The electronic and magnetic moment 2.97-3.07 B.M. data infers octahedral geometry for all the complexes. The IR data reveals that Schiff base (nih) form coordination bond with the metal ion through azomethine-nitrogen, phenolic-oxygen and carbonyl-oxygen in a tridentate fashion. In addition, DNA-binding properties of these six metal complexes were investigated using absorption spectroscopy, viscosity measurements and thermal denaturation methods. The results indicated that the nickel(II) complex strongly bind with calf-thymus DNA with intrinsic DNA binding constant K-b value of 4.9 x 10(4) M-1 for (3), 4.2 x 10(4) M-1 for (4), presumably via an intercalation mechanism compared to cobalt(III) complex with K-b value of 4.6 x 10(4) M-1 (1) and 4.1 x 10(4) M-1 (2). The DNA Photoclevage experiment shows that, the complexes act as effective DNA cleavage agent. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Semiconductor Quantum Well (QW) microtubes have been fabricated by strain-induced self assembling technique. Three types of multilayer structures have consisted of GaAs/InxGa1-xAs strained layers containing with various thickness of Monolayers of (GaAs/AlGaAs) QW were grown by Varian Gen II Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) on the GaAs (100) substrate. The shape of the rolled up microtubes provide a clear idea about the formation of three dimensional micro- and nanostructures. Micro-Raman and photoluminescence (PL) studies were performed to the QW microtubes and as compared with their grown area on the GaAs substrate. The results of Raman spectra show the frequency shift of phonon modes measured in tube and compared with the grown area due to residual strain. The PL peaks of the microtube were red-shifted due to the strain effect and transition of bandgap from Type-II to Type-I. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) play a major role in carbon cycle and can be utilized as a source of carbon and energy by bacteria. Salmonella typhimurium propionate kinase (StTdcD) catalyzes reversible transfer of the gamma-phosphate of ATP to propionate during L-threonine degradation to propionate. Kinetic analysis revealed that StTdcD possesses broad ligand specificity and could be activated by various SCFAs (propionate > acetate approximate to butyrate), nucleotides (ATP approximate to GTP > CTP approximate to TTP; dATP > dGTP > dCTP) and metal ions (Mg2+ approximate to Mn2+ > Co2+). Inhibition of StTdcD by tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates such as citrate, succinate, alpha-ketoglutarate and malate suggests that the enzyme could be under plausible feedback regulation. Crystal structures of StTdcD bound to PO4 (phosphate), AMP, ATP, Ap4 (adenosine tetraphosphate), GMP, GDP, GTP, CMP and CTP revealed that binding of nucleotide mainly involves hydrophobic interactions with the base moiety and could account for the broad biochemical specificity observed between the enzyme and nucleotides. Modeling and site-directed mutagenesis studies suggest Ala88 to be an important residue involved in determining the rate of catalysis with SCFA substrates. Molecular dynamics simulations on monomeric and dimeric forms of StTdcD revealed plausible open and closed states, and also suggested role for dimerization in stabilizing segment 235-290 involved in interfacial interactions and ligand binding. Observation of an ethylene glycol molecule bound sufficiently close to the gamma-phosphate in StTdcD complexes with triphosphate nucleotides supports direct in-line phosphoryl transfer. The frequency-dependent dielectric relaxation of Pb0.94Sr0.06](Mn1/3Sb2/3)(0.05)(Zr0.52Ti0.48)(0.95)]O-3 ceramics, synthesized in pure perovskite phase by a solid-state reaction technique is investigated in the temperature range from 303 to 773 K by alternating-current impedance spectroscopy. Using Cole-Cole model, an analysis of the imaginary part of the dielectric permittivity with frequency is performed assuming a distribution of relaxation times. The scaling behavior of the imaginary part of the electric modulus suggests that the relaxation describes the same mechanism at various temperatures. The variation of dielectric constant with temperature is explained considering the space-charge polarization. The SEM indicates that the sample has single phase with an average grain size similar to 14.2 mu m. The material exhibits tetragonal structure. A detailed temperature dependent dielectric study at various frequencies has also been performed. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Missing (in-situ) snow cover data hampers climate change and runoff studies in the Greater Himalayas
Resumo:
The Himalayas are presently holding the largest ice masses outside the polar regions and thus (temporarily) store important freshwater resources. In contrast to the contemplation of glaciers, the role of runoff from snow cover has received comparably little attention in the past, although (i) its contribution is thought to be at least equally or even more important than that of ice melt in many Himalayan catchments and (ii) climate change is expected to have widespread and significant consequences on snowmelt runoff. Here, we show that change assessment of snowmelt runoff and its timing is not as straightforward as often postulated, mainly as larger partial pressure of H2O, CO2, CH4, and other greenhouse gases might increase net long-wave input for snowmelt quite significantly in a future atmosphere. In addition, changes in the short-wave energy balance such as the pollution of the snow cover through black carbon or the sensible or latent heat contribution to snowmelt are likely to alter future snowmelt and runoff characteristics as well. For the assessment of snow cover extent and depletion, but also for its monitoring over the extremely large areas of the Himalayas, remote sensing has been used in the past and is likely to become even more important in the future. However, for the calibration and validation of remotely-sensed data, and even-more so in light of possible changes in snow-cover energy balance, we strongly call for more in-situ measurements across the Himalayas, in particular for daily data on new snow and snow cover water equivalent, or the respective energy balance components. Moreover, data should be made accessible to the scientific community, so that the latter can more accurately estimate climate change impacts on Himalayan snow cover and possible consequences thereof on runoff. Using isothermal equilibration, phase relations are established in the system Sm-Rh-O at 1273 K. SmRhO3 with GdFeO3-type perovskite structure is found to be the only ternary phase. Solid-state electrochemical cells, containing calcia-stabilized zirconia as an electrolyte, are used to measure the thermodynamic properties of SmRhO3 formed from their binary component oxides Rh2O3 (ortho) and Sm2O3 (C-type and B-type) in two different temperature ranges. Results suggest that C-type Sm2O3 with cubic structure transforms to B-type Sm2O3 with monoclinic structure at 1110 K. The standard Gibbs energy of transformation is . Standard Gibbs energy of formation of SmRhO3 from binary component oxides Rh2O3 and Sm2O3 with B-type rare earth oxide structure can be expressed as . The decomposition temperature of SmRhO3 estimated from the extrapolation of electrochemical data is 1665 (+/- 2) K in air and 1773 (+/- 3) K in pure oxygen. Temperature-composition diagrams at constant oxygen pressures are constructed for the system Sm-Rh-O. Employing the thermodynamic data for SmRhO3 from emf measurement and auxiliary data for other phases from the literature, oxygen potential-composition phase diagram and 3-D chemical potential diagram for the system Sm-Rh-O at 1273 K are developed.

Pure cubic zirconia (ZrO2) nanopowder is prepared for the first time by simple low temperature solution combustion method without calcination. The product is characterized by Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infra Red spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The PXRD showed the formation of pure stable cubic ZrO2 nanopowders with average crystallite size ranging from 6 to 12 nm. The lattice parameters were calculated from Rietveld refinement method. SEM micrograph shows fluffy, mesoporous, agglomerated particles with large number of voids. TEM micrograph shows honey comb like arrangement of particles with particle size similar to 10 nm. The PL emission spectrum excited at 210 nm and 240 nm consists of intense bands centered at similar to 365 and similar to 390 nm. Both the samples show shoulder peak at 420 nm, along with four weak emission bands at similar to 484, similar to 528, similar to 614 and similar to 726 nm. TL studies were carried out pre-irradiating samples with gamma-rays ranging from 1 to 5 KGy at room temperature. A well resolved glow peak at 377 degrees C is recorded which can be ascribed to deep traps. With increase in gamma radiation there is linear increase in TL intensity which shows the possible use of ZrO2 as dosimetric material. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

CaSiO3 nano-ceramic powder doped with Pr3+ has been prepared by solution combustion method. The powder Ca0.5Pr0.05SiO3 is investigated for its dielectric and electrical properties at room temperature to study the effect of doping. The sample is characterized by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The size of either of volume elements of CaSiO3:Pr3+ estimated from transmission electron microscopy is about 180-200 nm. The sample shows colossal dielectric response at room temperature. This colossal dielectric behaviour follows Debye-type relaxation and can be explained by Maxwell-Wagner (MW) polarization. However, analysis of impedance and electric modulus data using Cole-Cole plot shows that it deviates from ideal Debye behaviour resulting from the distribution of relaxation times. The distribution in the relaxation times may be attributed to existence of electrically heterogeneous grains, insulating grain boundary, and electrode contact regions. Doping, thus, results in substantial modifications in the dielectric and electrical properties of the nano-ceramic CaSiO3. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
