It has recently been proposed that the broad spectrum of interannual variability in the tropics with a peak around four years results from an interaction between the linear low-frequency oscillatory mode of the coupled system and the nonlinear higher-frequency modes of the system. In this study we determine the bispectrum of the conceptual model consisting of a nonlinear low-order model coupled to a linear oscillator for various values of the coupling constants.

We present a simplified and quantitative analysis of the Seebeck coefficient in degenerate bulk and quantum well materials whose conduction band electrons obey Kane's non-parabolic energy dispersion relation. We use k.p formalism to include the effect of the overlap function due to the band non-parabolicity in the Seebeck coefficient. We also address the key issues and the conditions in which the Seebeck coefficient in quantum wells should exhibit oscillatory dependency with the film thickness under the acoustic phonon and ionized impurity scattering. The effect of screening length in degenerate bulk and quantum wells has also been generalized for the determination of ionization scattering. The well-known expressions of the Seebeck coefficient in non-degenerate wide band gap materials for both bulk and quantum wells has been obtained as a special case and this provides an indirect proof of our generalized theoretical analysis.

The effect of aluminosilicate (Al2SiO5) on the upturn characteristics of ZnO varistor ceramics has been investigated. Addition of Al2SiO5 shifts the point of upturn above 10(4) A cm(-2). The extended nonlinearity in the high current density region is better correlatable to the presence of higher density of trap stales and changing pattern of trap depths at the grain boundary interface as much as the grain interior conductivity. Microstructure studies show the formation and involvement of a liquid phase during sintering. The secondary phases, predominantly are antimony spinel, Zn7Sb2O12, zinc silicate, Zn2SiO4 and magnesium aluminium silicate. MgAl2Si3O10. Energy dispersive X-ray analyses (EDAX) show that Al and Si are distributed more in the grain boundaries and within the secondary phases than in the grain interiors. Capacitance-voltage analyses and dielectric dispersion studies indicate the presence of negative capacitance and associated resonance, indicative of the oscillatory charge redistribution involving increased trapping at the interface states. The admittance spectroscopy data show that the type of trap slates remains unaltered whereas the addition of Al2SiO5 increases the density of low energy traps. Two mixed boundary value problems associated with two-dimensional Laplace equation, arising in the study of scattering of surface waves in deep water (or interface waves in two superposed fluids) in the linearised set up, by discontinuities in the surface (or interface) boundary conditions, are handled for solution by the aid of the Weiner-Hopf technique applied to a slightly more general differential equation to be solved under general boundary conditions and passing on to the limit in a manner so as to finally give rise to the solutions of the original problems. The first problem involves one discontinuity while the second problem involves two discontinuities. The reflection coefficient is obtained in closed form for the first problem and approximately for the second. The behaviour of the reflection coefficient for both the problems involving deep water against the incident wave number is depicted in a number of figures. It is observed that while the reflection coefficient for the first problem steadily increases with the wave number, that for the second problem exhibits oscillatory behaviour and vanishes at some discrete values of the wave number. Thus, there exist incident wave numbers for which total transmission takes place for the second problem. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Electrochemically deposited Cu-Ni black coatings on molybdenum substrate from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) bath solution are shown to exhibit good optical properties (alpha = 0.94, epsilon = 0.09). The deposit is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cu is present in metallic and +2 oxidation states in the as-prepared Cu-Ni black coating, whereas Ni2+ as well as Ni3+ species are observed in the same coating. Cu and Ni are observed in their metallic state after 10 and 20 min sputtering. X-ray initiated Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES) of Cu and Ni also agrees well with XPS investigations. Rammed earth is an energy efficient and low carbon emission alternative for load bearing walls. This paper attempts to examine the influence of clay content and moisture content on the compressive strength of cement stabilised rammed earth (CSRE) through experimental investigations. Compressive strength of CSRE prisms was monitored both in dry and wet (saturated) conditions. Major conclusions of the study are:(a) Optimum clay content for maximum compressive strength is about 16%, (b) the strength of CSRE is sensitive to the moisture content at the time of testing, (c) Strength in saturated condition is less than half of the dry strength and (d) Water absorption (saturated water content) increases as the clay content of the soil mix increases and it is in the range of 12 to 16% for the CRSE prisms with 8% cement.

Electrochemical deposition of Ni-Pd alloy films of various compositions from bath solution containing ethylenediamine (EDA) was carried out to use as anode material for methanol oxidative fuel cell in H2SO4 medium. Electronic absorption spectrum of bath solution containing Ni2+ Pd2+ ions and EDA indicated the formation of a four coordinate square planar metal-ligand complex of both the metal ions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the deposited alloy films show an increase in Pd-Ni alloy lattice parameter with increase in Pd content, and indicate the substitution of Pd in the lattice. A nano/ultrafine kind of crystal growth was observed in the alloy film deposited at low current density (2.5 mA cm(-2)). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) studies on the successively sputtered films showed the presence of Ni and Pd in pure metallic states and the surface concentration ratio of Ni to Pd is less than bulk indicating the segregation of Pd on the surface. Electro-catalytic oxidation of methanol in H2SO4 medium is found to be promoted on Ni-Pd electrodeposits. The anodic peak current characteristics to oxidation reaction on Ni-Pd was found typically high when compared to pure nickel and the relative increase in surface area by alloying the Ni by Pd was found to be as much as 300 times. A steel disc is cut using a single point tool. The coefficient of friction of the nascent cut surface is measured by a spherical steel pin situated in close proximity of the point of cutting. The tool, disc and the friction pin are immersed in an oil in water emulsion bath during the experiment. The purpose of the experiments conducted here is to record the effect of hydrophilic/lypophilic balance (HLB) of the emulsifier on the lubricity experienced in the cutting operation. The more lypophilic emulsifiers were found to give greater lubricity than what is recorded when the emulsifier is more hydrophilic. XPS and FTIR spectroscopy are used to explore the tribofilm generated on the nascent cut surface to indicate a possible rationale for the effect. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Recently, the demand of the steel having superior chemical and physical properties has increased for which the content of carbon must be in ultra low range. There are many processes which can produce low carbon steel such as Tank degasser and RH (Rheinstahl-Heraeus) processes. It has been claimed that using a new process, called REDA (Revolutionary Degassing Activator), one can achieve the carbon content below 10ppm in less time. REDA process in terms of installment cost is in between tank degasser and RH processes. As such, REDA process has not been studied thoroughly. Fluid flow phenomena affect the decarburization rate the most besides the chemical reaction rate. Therefore, momentum balance equations along with k-ε turbulent model have been solved for gas and liquid phases in two-dimension (2D) for REDA process. The fluid flow phenomena have been studied in details for this process by varying gas flow rate, depth of immersed snorkel in the steel, diameter of the snorkel and change in vacuum pressure. It is found that design of snorkel affects the mixing process of the bath significantly.

This paper proposes a new straight forward technique based on dynamic inversion, which is applied for tracking the pilot commands in high performance aircrafts.Pilot commands assumed in longitudinal mode are normal acceleration and total velocity(while roll angle and lateral acceleration are maintained at zero). In lateral mode, roll rate and total velocity are used as pilot commands (while climb rate and lateral acceleration are maintained at zero). Ensuring zero lateral acceleration leads to a better turn co-ordination. A six degree-of-freedom model of F-16 aircraft is used for both control design as well as simulation studies. Promising results are obtained which are found to be superior as compared to an existing approach (which is also based on dynamic inversion). The new approach has two potential benefits, namely reduced oscillatory response and reduced control magnitude. Another advantage of this approach is that it leads to a significant reduction of tuning parameters in the control design process.

Based on dynamic inversion, a relatively straightforward approach is presented in this paper for nonlinear flight control design of high performance aircrafts, which does not require the normal and lateral acceleration commands to be first transferred to body rates before computing the required control inputs. This leads to substantial improvement of the tracking response. Promising results are obtained from six degree-offreedom simulation studies of F-16 aircraft, which are found to be superior as compared to an existing approach (which is also based on dynamic inversion). The new approach has two potential benefits, namely reduced oscillatory response (including elimination of non-minimum phase behavior) and reduced control magnitude. Next, a model-following neuron-adaptive design is augmented the nominal design in order to assure robust performance in the presence of parameter inaccuracies in the model. Note that in the approach the model update takes place adaptively online and hence it is philosophically similar to indirect adaptive control. However, unlike a typical indirect adaptive control approach, there is no need to update the individual parameters explicitly. Instead the inaccuracy in the system output dynamics is captured directly and then used in modifying the control. This leads to faster adaptation, which helps in stabilizing the unstable plant quicker. The robustness study from a large number of simulations shows that the adaptive design has good amount of robustness with respect to the expected parameter inaccuracies in the model.

We present low-temperature electrical transport experiments in five field-effect transistor devices consisting of monolayer, bilayer, and trilayer MoS(2) films, mechanically exfoliated onto Si/SiO(2) substrate. Our experiments reveal that the electronic states In all films are localized well up to room temperature over the experimentally accessible range of gate voltage. This manifests in two-dimensional (2D) variable range hopping (VRH) at high temperatures, while below similar to 30 K, the conductivity displays oscillatory structures In gate voltage arising from resonant tunneling at the localized sites. From the correlation energy (T(0)) of VRH and gate voltage dependence of conductivity, we suggest that Coulomb potential from trapped charges In the substrate is the dominant source of disorder in MoS(2) field-effect devices, which leads to carrier localization, as well.
