The half-duplex constraint, which mandates that a cooperative relay cannot transmit and receive simultaneously, considerably simplifies the demands made on the hardware and signal processing capabilities of a relay. However, the very inability of a relay to transmit and receive simultaneously leads to a potential under-utilization of time and bandwidth resources available to the system. We analyze the impact of the half-duplex constraint on the throughput of a cooperative relay system that uses rateless codes to harness spatial diversity and efficiently transmit information from a source to a destination. We derive closed-form expressions for the throughput of the system, and show that as the number of relays increases, the throughput approaches that of a system that uses more sophisticated full-duplex nodes. Thus, half-duplex nodes are well suited for cooperation using rateless codes despite the simplicity of both the cooperation protocol and the relays.

We develop an optimal, distributed, and low feedback timer-based selection scheme to enable next generation rate-adaptive wireless systems to exploit multi-user diversity. In our scheme, each user sets a timer depending on its signal to noise ratio (SNR) and transmits a small packet to identify itself when its timer expires. When the SNR-to-timer mapping is monotone non-decreasing, timers of users with better SNRs expire earlier. Thus, the base station (BS) simply selects the first user whose timer expiry it can detect, and transmits data to it at as high a rate as reliably possible. However, timers that expire too close to one another cannot be detected by the BS due to collisions. We characterize in detail the structure of the SNR-to-timer mapping that optimally handles these collisions to maximize the average data rate. We prove that the optimal timer values take only a discrete set of values, and that the rate adaptation policy strongly influences the optimal scheme's structure. The optimal average rate is very close to that of ideal selection in which the BS always selects highest rate user, and is much higher than that of the popular, but ad hoc, timer schemes considered in the literature.

A distributed storage setting is considered where a file of size B is to be stored across n storage nodes. A data collector should be able to reconstruct the entire data by downloading the symbols stored in any k nodes. When a node fails, it is replaced by a new node by downloading data from some of the existing nodes. The amount of download is termed as repair bandwidth. One way to implement such a system is to store one fragment of an (n, k) MDS code in each node, in which case the repair bandwidth is B. Since repair of a failed node consumes network bandwidth, codes reducing repair bandwidth are of great interest. Most of the recent work in this area focuses on reducing the repair bandwidth of a set of k nodes which store the data in uncoded form, while the reduction in the repair bandwidth of the remaining nodes is only marginal. In this paper, we present an explicit code which reduces the repair bandwidth for all the nodes to approximately B/2. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first explicit code which reduces the repair bandwidth of all the nodes for all feasible values of the system parameters.

We consider the problem of minimizing the bandwidth required to repair a failed node when data is stored across n nodes in a distributed manner, so as to facilitate reconstruction of the entire data by connecting to any k out of the n nodes. We provide explicit and optimal constructions which permit exact replication of a failed systematic node.

An experimental characterization of three-phase equilibria in Fe--V--O and Fe--Nb--O systems at 1823, 1873 and 1923K has been carried out using a solid state cell and by analysis of quenched samples. The oxygen potentials corresponding to these three-phase equilibria were monitored by a solid state cell incorporating Y sub 2 O sub 3 doped ThO sub 2 with Cr + Cr sub 2 O sub 3 as reference electrode. Similar measurements were carried out for Fe--Nb--O alloys in equilibrium with a mixture of FeNb sub 2 O sub 6 and NbO sub 2 . These measurements permit evaluation of interaction parameters (e exp V sub O = --6590/T + 2.892 and e exp Nb sub O = --4066/T + 1.502) and activity coefficients of vanadiun and niobium in dilute solution (ln gamma exp O sub V = --35 320/T + 12.68 and ln gamma sub Nb exp O = --12 386/T + 4.34) in liquid iron. The results obtained in this study resolve a number of discrepancies in thermodynamic data reported in the literature, especially regarding the activity coefficients of V and Nb and the stability ranges for V sub 2 O sub 3 and VO sub 1+x . 18 ref.--AA

Frequency-domain scheduling and rate adaptation enable next generation wireless cellular systems such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) to achieve significantly higher downlink throughput. LTE assigns subcarriers in chunks, called physical resource blocks (PRBs), to users to reduce control signaling overhead. To reduce the enormous feedback overhead, the channel quality indicator (CQI) report that is used to feed back channel state information is averaged over a subband, which, in turn, is a group of multiple PRBs. In this paper, we develop closed-form expressions for the throughput achieved by the subband-level CQI feedback mechanism of LTE. We show that the coarse frequency resolution of the CQI incurs a significant loss in throughput and limits the multi-user gains achievable by the system. We then show that the performance can be improved by means of an offset mechanism that effectively makes the users more conservative in reporting their CQI.

In a cooperative relay-assisted communication system that uses rateless codes, packets get transmitted from a source to a destination at a rate that depends on instantaneous channel states of the wireless links between nodes. When multiple relays are present, the relay with the highest channel gain to the source is the first to successfully decode a packet from the source and forward it to the destination. Thus, the unique properties of rateless codes ensure that both rate adaptation and relay selection occur without the transmitting source or relays acquiring instantaneous channel knowledge. In this paper, we show that in such cooperative systems, buffering packets at relays significantly increases throughput. We develop a novel analysis of these systems that combines the communication-theoretic aspects of cooperation over fading channels with the queuing-theoretic aspects associated with buffering. Closed-form expressions are derived for the throughput and end-to-end delay for the general case in which the channels between various nodes are not statistically identical. Corresponding results are also derived for benchmark systems that either do not exploit spatial diversity or do not buffer packets. Altogether, our results show that buffering - a capability that will be commonly available in practical deployments of relays - amplifies the benefits of cooperation.

One characteristic feature of the athermal beta -> omega transformation is the short time scale of the transformation. So far, no clear understanding of this issue exists. Here we construct a model that includes contributions from a Landau sixth-order free energy density, kinetic energy due to displacement, and the Rayleigh dissipation function to account for the dissipation arising from the rapid movement of the parent product interface during rapid nucleation. We also include the contribution from omega-like fluctuations to local stress. The model shows that the transformation is complete on a time scale comparable to the velocity of sound. The estimated nucleation rate is several orders higher than that for diffusion-controlled transformations. The model predicts that the athermal omega phase is limited to a certain range of alloying composition. The estimated nucleation rate and the size of ``isothermal'' particles beyond 17% Nb are also consistent with experimental results. The model provides an explanation for the reprecipitation process of the omega particles in the ``cleared'' channels formed during deformation of omega-forming alloys. The model also predicts that acoustic emission should be detectable during the formation of the athermal phase. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Divalent metal complexes of general formula M(2-nb)(2)(mc)(2)].2(2-nbH), where M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) or Zn(II), 2-nbH = 2-nitrobenzoic acid and mc = methyl carbazate (NH2NHCOOCH3), have been prepared and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. Single-crystal X-ray study of the Cu(II) complex revealed that the molecule is centrosymmetric, with two N,O-chelating mc ligands in equatorial positions and a pair of monodentate 2-nb anions in the axial positions. The lattice 2-nbH molecules help to establish the packing of monomers through hydrogen-bonding interactions. Thermal stability and reactivity of the complexes were studied by TG-DTA. Emission studies show that these complexes are fluorescent.

The electrocaloric effect (ECE) of 0.85PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3-)0.15PbTiO(3) (0.85PMN-0.15PT) thin films deposited on (111) Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been calculated. The reversible adiabatic temperature was calculated indirectly using the Maxwell's relation Delta T = -T/C rho integral(E2)(E1) (partial derivative P/partial derivative T)(sigma,E)dE. Permittivity and P-E measurements show an anomaly at 11 degrees C on heating only. This anomaly previously reported are claimed to arise due to the PNR depolarization upon heating. The absence of this anomaly during cooling suggests that no structural phase transition takes place. A negative electrocaloric effect is observed which is explained by the increase in the entropy term.

The formation and growth of continental crust in the Archean have been evaluated through models of subduction-accretion and mantle plume. The Nilgiri Block in southern India exposes exhumed Neoarchean lower crust, uplifted to heights of 2500 m above sea level along the north western margin of the Peninsula. Major lithologies in this block include charnockite with or without garnet, anorthosite-gabbro suite, pyroxenite, amphibolite and hornblende-biotite gneiss (TTG). All these rock types are closely associated as an arc magmatic suite, with diffuse boundaries and coeval nature. The charnockite and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) show SiO2 content varying from 64 to 73 wt.%. The hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) are high-Al type with Al2O3 >15 wt.% whereas the charnockites show Al2O3 <15 wt.%. The composition of charnockite is mainly magnesian and calcic to calc-alkaline. The mafic-ultramafic rocks show composition close to that of tholeiitic series. The low values of K(2)o (<3 wt.%), (K/Rb)/K2O (<500), Zr/Ti, and trace element ratios like (La/Yb)n/(Sr/Y), (Y/Nb), (Y + Nb)/Rb, (Y+Ta)/Rb, Yb/Ta indicate a volcanic arc signature for these rocks. The geochemical signature is consistent with arc magmatic rocks generated through oceanic plate subduction. The primitive mantle normalized trace element patterns of these rocks display enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and comparable high field strength elements (HFSE) in charnockite and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) consistent with subduction-related origin. Primitive mantle normalized REE pattern displays an enrichment in LREE in the chamockite and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) as compared to a flat pattern for the mafic rocks. The chondrite normalized REE patterns of zircons of all the rock types reveal cores with high HREE formed at ca. 2700 Ma and rims with low HREE formed at 2500-2450 Ma. Log-transformed La/Th-Nb/Th-Sm/Th-Yb/Th discrimination diagram for the mafic and ultramafic rocks from Nilgiri displays a transition from mid-oceanic ridge basalt (MORB) to island arc basalt (IAB) suggesting a MORB source. The U-Pb zircon data from the charnockites, mafic granulites and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) presented in our study show that the magma generation during subduction and accretion events in this block occurred at 2700-2500 Ma. Together with the recent report on Neoarchean supra-subduction zone ophiolite suite at its southern margin, the Nilgiri Block provides one of the best examples for continental growth through vertical stacking and lateral accretion in a subduction environment during the Neoarchean. The effect of hydrogen (H) charging on the shear yield strength (tau(max)) and shear transformation zone volume (Omega) of Ni-Nb-Zr metallic glass ribbons, with varying Zr content, were studied through the first pop-in loads during nanoindentation. Weight gain measurements after H charging and desorption studies were utilized to identify how the total H absorbed during charging is partitioned into mobile and immobile (or trapped) parts. These, in turn, indicate the significant role of H mobility in the amorphous structure on the yielding behavior. In high-Zr alloys, tau(max) increases significantly whereas Omega decreases. In low-Zr alloys, a slight decrease in tau(max) and increase in Omega were noted. These experimental observations are rationalized in terms of the mobility of the absorbed H in the amorphous structure and the possible role of it in the shear transformation zone dynamics during deformation of the metallic glass.
