In the recent years, there has been a trend to run metallic pipelines carrying petroleum products and high voltage AC power lines parallel to each other in a relatively narrow strip of land. Due to this sharing of the right-of-way, verhead AC power line electric field may induce voltages on the metallic pipelines running in close vicinity leading to serious adverse effects. In this paper, the induced voltages on metallic pipelines running in close vicinity of high voltage power transmission lines have been computed. Before computing the induced voltages, an optimum configuration of the phase conductors based on the lowest conductor surface gradient and field under transmission line has been arrived at. This paper reports the conductor surface field gradients calculated for the various configurations. Also the electric fields under transmission line, for single circuit and double circuit (various phase arrangements) have been analyzed. Based on the above results, an optimum configuration giving the lowest field under the power line as well as the lowest conductor surface gradient has been arrived at and for this configuration, induced voltage on the pipeline has been computed using the Charge Simulation Method (CSM). For comparison, induced voltages on the pipeline has been computed for the various other phase configurations also.

In this paper, the radiated electric and magnetic fields above a perfectly conducting ground at different heights from 10 m to 10 km and for lateral distances varying from 20 m to 10 km from a lightning return stroke channel are computed and the field waveforms are presented. It has been observed that the vertical electric field reverses its polarity with height and this height depends on the radial distance from the lightning channel. The magnitude of the horizontal electric field, on the other hand, increases with height up to a certain height and then reduces. The effect of variation in the rate of rise of lightning current (di/dt) and the velocity of return stroke current on the radiated electric and magnetic fields for the above heights and distances have also been studied. It is seen that the variation in maximum current derivative does not have a significant influence on the electric field when ground is assumed as a perfect conductor but it influences significantly the horizontal electric field when ground has finite conductivity. The velocity of propagation of return stroke current on the other hand has significant influence for both perfectly as well as finitely conducting ground conditions.

A three-level inverter produces six active vectors, each of normalized magnitudes 1, 0.866, and 0.5, besides a zero vector. The vectors of relative length 0.5 are termed pivot vectors. The three nearest voltage vectors are usually used to synthesize the reference vector. In most continuous pulsewidth-modulation(PWM) schemes, the switching sequence begins from a pivot vector and ends with the same pivot vector. Thus, the pivot vector is applied twice in a subcycle or half-carrier cycle. This paper proposes and investigates alternative switching sequences, which use the pivot vector only once but employ one of the other two vectors twice within the subcycle. The total harmonic distortion(THD) in the fundamental line current pertaining to these novel sequences is studied theoretically as well as experimentally over the whole range of modulation. Compared with centered space vector PWM, two of the proposed sequences lead to reduced THD at high modulation indices at a given average switching frequency.

We address a certain inverse problem in ultrasound-modulated optical tomography: the recovery of the amplitude of vibration of scatterers [p(r)] in the ultrasound focal volume in a diffusive object from boundary measurement of the modulation depth (M) of the amplitude autocorrelation of light [phi(r, tau)] traversing through it. Since M is dependent on the stiffness of the material, this is the precursor to elasticity imaging. The propagation of phi(r, tau) is described by a diffusion equation from which we have derived a nonlinear perturbation equation connecting p(r) and refractive index modulation [Delta n(r)] in the region of interest to M measured on the boundary. The nonlinear perturbation equation and its approximate linear counterpart are solved for the recovery of p(r). The numerical results reveal regions of different stiffness, proving that the present method recovers p(r) with reasonable quantitative accuracy and spatial resolution. An experimental setup has been realized to measure weak magnetic moments which can be modulated at radio frequencies (similar to 1-5 MHz). Using an optimized radio-frequency (RF) pickup coil and lock-in amplifier, an experimental sensitivity of 10(-15) Am(2) corresponding to 10(-18) emu has been demonstrated with a 1 s time constant. The detection limit at room temperature is 9.3 x 10(-16) Am(2)/root Hz limited by Johnson noise of the coil. The setup has been used to directly measure the magnetic moment due to a small number (similar to 7 x 10(8)) of spin polarized electrons generated by polarization modulated optical radiation in GaAs and Ge. We demonstrate a method to recover the Young's modulus (E) of a tissue-mimicking phantom from measurements of ultrasound modulated optical tomography (UMOT). The object is insonified by a dualbeam, confocal ultrasound transducer (US) oscillating at frequencies f(0) and f(0) + Delta f and the variation of modulation depth (M) in the autocorrelation of light traversed through the focal region of the US transducer against Delta f is measured. From the dominant peaks observed in the above variation, the natural frequencies of the insonified region associated with the vibration along the US transducer axis are deduced. A consequence of the above resonance is that the speckle fluctuation at the resonance frequency has a higher signal-to-noise to ratio (SNR). From these natural frequencies and the associated eigenspectrum of the oscillating object, Young's modulus (E) of the material in the focal region is recovered. The working of this method is confirmed by recovering E in the case of three tissue-mimicking phantoms of different elastic modulus values. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

High voltage power supplies for radar applications are investigated which are subjected to pulsed load with stringent specifications. In the proposed solution, power conversion is done in two stages. A low power-high frequency converter modulates the input voltage of a high power-low frequency converter. This method satisfies all the performance specifications and takes care of the critical aspects of HV transformer.

The numerical solutions of Boltzmann transpott equation for the energy distribution of electrons moving in crossed fields in nitrogen have been obtained for 100 ÿ E/p ÿ 1000 V M-1 Torr-1 and for 0ÿ B/p ÿ 0.02 Tesla Torr-1 using the concept of energy dependent effective field intensity. From the derived distribution functions the electron mean energy, the tranaverse and perpendicular drift velocities and the averaged effective field intensity (Eavef) which signifies the average field intensity experienced by electron swarms in E àB field have been derived. The maximum difference between the electron mean energy for a given E ÃÂB field and that corresponding to Eavef/p (p is the gas pressure) is found to be within ñ3.5%.

Sparking potentials have been measured in nitrogen and dry air between coaxial cylindrical electrodes for values of n = R2/R1 = approximately 1 to 30 (R1 = inner electrode radius, R2 = outer electrode radius) in the presence of crossed uniform magnetic fields. The magnetic flux density was varied from 0 to 3000 Gauss. It has been shown that the minimum sparking potentials in the presence of the crossed magnetic field can be evaluated on the basis of the equivalent pressure concept when the secondary ionization coefficient does not vary appreciably with B/p (B = magnetic flux density, p = gas pressure). The values of secondary ionization coefficients ¿B in nitrogen in crossed fields calculated from measured values of sparking potentials and Townsend ionization coefficients taken from the literature, have been reported. The calculated values of collision frequencies in nitrogen from minimum sparking potentials in crossed fields are found to increase with increasing B/p at constant E/pe (pe = equivalent pressure). Studies on the similarity relationship in crossed fields has shown that the similarity theorem is obeyed in dry air for both polarities of the central electrode in crossed fields.

The setting considered in this paper is one of distributed function computation. More specifically, there is a collection of N sources possessing correlated information and a destination that would like to acquire a specific linear combination of the N sources. We address both the case when the common alphabet of the sources is a finite field and the case when it is a finite, commutative principal ideal ring with identity. The goal is to minimize the total amount of information needed to be transmitted by the N sources while enabling reliable recovery at the destination of the linear combination sought. One means of achieving this goal is for each of the sources to compress all the information it possesses and transmit this to the receiver. The Slepian-Wolf theorem of information theory governs the minimum rate at which each source must transmit while enabling all data to be reliably recovered at the receiver. However, recovering all the data at the destination is often wasteful of resources since the destination is only interested in computing a specific linear combination. An alternative explored here is one in which each source is compressed using a common linear mapping and then transmitted to the destination which then proceeds to use linearity to directly recover the needed linear combination. The article is part review and presents in part, new results. The portion of the paper that deals with finite fields is previously known material, while that dealing with rings is mostly new.Attempting to find the best linear map that will enable function computation forces us to consider the linear compression of source. While in the finite field case, it is known that a source can be linearly compressed down to its entropy, it turns out that the same does not hold in the case of rings. An explanation for this curious interplay between algebra and information theory is also provided in this paper.

Thin films of (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 - xPbTiO(3) (x = 0.1 to 0.3)(PMN-PT) were deposited on the platinum coated silicon substrate by pulsed excimer laser ablation technique. A template layer of LaSr0.5Co0.5O3 (LSCO) was deposited on platinum substrate prior to the deposition of PMN-PT thin films. The composition and the structure of the films were modulated via proper variation of the deposition parameter such as substrate temperature, laser fluence and thickness of the template layers. We observed the impact of the thickness of LSCO template layer on the orientation of the films. A room temperature dielectric constant varying from 2000 to 4500 was noted for different composition of the films. The dielectric properties of the films were studied over the frequency range of 100 Hz - 100 kHz over a wide range of temperatures. The films exhibited the relaxor- type behavior that was characterized by the frequency dispersion of the temperature of dielectric constant maxima (T-m) and also diffuse phase transition. Thin films of (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3(x = 0.1 to 0.3) (PMN-PT) were successfully grown on the platinum coated silicon substrate by pulsed excimer laser ablation technique. A thin template layer of LaSr0.5Co0.5O3 (LSCO) was deposited on platinum substrate prior to the deposition of PMN-PT thin films. The composition and the structure of the films were modulated via proper variation of the deposition parameter such as substrate temperature, laser fluence and thickness of the template layers. We observed the impact of the thickness of LSCO template layer on the orientation of the films. The crystallographic structure and compositional variation were confirmed with x-ray diffraction and energy diffraction x-ray (EDX) analysis. A room temperature dielectric constant varying from 2000 to 4500 was noted for different composition of the films. The dielectric properties of the films were studied over the frequency range of 100 Hz - 100 kHz over a wide range of temperatures. The films exhibited the relaxor-type behavior that was characterized by the frequency dispersion of the temperature of dielectric constant maxima (Tm) and also diffuse phase transition. This relaxor nature in PMN-PT thin films was attributed to freezing of the dipole moment, which takes place below a certain temperature. This phenomenon was found to be very similar to spin glass system, where spins are observed to freeze after certain temperature.
