STUDIES on potassium perchlorate/polystyrene (KP/PS) propellant systems have been carried out by using such techniques as thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and mass spectrometry (MS). It has been found that the thermal decomposition (TD) behavior of the KP/PS propellant is similar to that of the AP/PS propellant studied earlier.! It has also been observed that the TD of KP in the melt has a correlation with the burning rate (r) of KP/PS propellant at atmospheric pressure.

Optically clear glasses were fabricated by quenching the melt of CaCO3-Bi2O3-B2O3 (in equimolecular ratio). The amorphous and glassy characteristics of the as-quenched samples were confirmed via the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) studies These glasses were found to. have high thermal stability parameter (S). The optical transmission studies carried out in the 200-2500 nm wavelength range confirmed both the as-quenched and heat-treated samples to be transparent between 400 nm and 2500 nm. The glass-plates that were heat-treated just above the glass transition temperature (723 K) for 6 h retained approximate to 60% transparency despite having nano-crystallites (approximate to 50-100 nm) of CaBi2B2O7 (CBBO) as confirmed by both the XRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. The dielectric properties and impedance characteristics of the as-quenched and heat-treated (723 K/6 h) samples were studied as a function of frequency at different temperatures. Cole-Cole equation was employed to rationalize the impedance data.

Tellurite-based glasses in the TeO2-K3Li2Nb5O15, TeO2-Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30, and V2Te2O9 were fabricated by the conventional melt-quenching technique. Amorphous and glassy characteristics of the as-quenched samples were established via the X-ray powder diffraction technique and differential thermal analysis, respectively. The as-quenched samples were irradiated by an excimer laser (248 nm). The effect of laser power, duration of irradiation, and the frequency of the laser pulses on the surface features of the above glasses were studied. The optical microscopic studies carried out on the above systems revealed the presence of quasi-periodic and periodic structures on their surfaces. The local compositional variations of these structures were confirmed by back-scattered electron imaging using scanning electron microscope accompanied by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. These results were convincing enough to state that the glasses in the present investigations had undergone spinodal decomposition on laser irradiation. The incidence of the interconnected texture of two different phases was observed owing to the quenching effect produced by the heating and cooling cycle of the successive laser pulses. Ring- and line-shaped patterns were also observed, respectively, when the pulse frequency of the laser and the duration of irradiation were increased.

Transparent SrBi2B2O7 glasses were prepared via melt-quenching technique and characterized using differential scanning calorimetry and x-ray powder diffraction. The ac conductivities of the glasses were studied as a function of frequency (100 Hz-10 MHz) at different temperatures. The frequency dependence of conductivity has been analyzed using Almond-West expression. The exponent n was nearly unaffected by temperature. Impedance and modulus spectroscopies were employed to further examine the electrical data. Dielectric relaxation exhibited a stretched exponential behavior with a stretching exponent beta independent of temperature. From conductivity analysis we have proposed that the charge transport occurs through the participation of nonbridging oxygen (NBO), which switches positions in a facile manner. The stretched exponential behavior appears to be a direct consequence of the NBO switching mechanism of charge transport.

Room temperature, magnesium ion conducting binary molten electrolyte consisting of acetamide and magnesium perchlorate has been prepared and characterized. The molten liquid is very stable and shows high ionic conductivity, of the order of several mS cm(-1) at 25 degrees C with other favourable physicochemical properties. Vibrational spectroscopic studies reveal that the free ion concentration is higher than that of ion pairs and aggregates in the melt. The electrochemical reversibility of magnesium deposition and dissolution is demonstrated using voltammetry and impedance studies. Preliminary studies on rechargeable batteries assembled using gamma-MnO2 and Mg metal as the electrodes together with the molten electrolyte show high discharge capacity.

Bulk Ge7Se93-xSbx (21 <= x <= 32) glasses are prepared by melt quenching method and electrical switching studies have been undertaken on these samples to elucidate the type of switching and the composition and thickness dependence of switching voltages. On the basis of the compressibility and atomic radii, it has been previously observed that Se-based glasses exhibit memory switching behavior. However, the present results indicate that Ge7Se93-xSbx glasses exhibit threshold type electrical switching with high switching voltages. Further, these samples are found to show fluctuations in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. The observed threshold behavior of Ge7Se93-xSbx glasses has been understood on the basis of larger atomic radii and lesser compressibilities of Sb and Ge. Further. the high switching voltages and fluctuations in the I-V characteristics of Ge-Se-Sb samples can be attributed to the high resistance of the samples and the difference in thermal conductivities of different structural units constituting the local structure of these glasses. The switching voltages of Ge7Se93-xSbx glasses have been found to decrease with the increase in the Sb concentration. The observed composition dependence of switching voltages has been understood on the basis of higher metallicity of the Sb additive and also in the light of the Chemically Ordered Network (CON) model. Further, the thickness dependence of switching voltages has been studied to reassert the mechanism of switching.

Transparent glasses of SrBi2B2O7 (SBBO) were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The amorphous and the glassy nature of the as-quenched samples were, respectively, confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The glass transition (T (g)) and the crystallization parameters [crystallization activation energy (E (cr)) and Avrami exponent (n)] were evaluated under non-isothermal conditions using DSC. There was a close agreement between the activation energies for the crystallization process determined by Augis and Bennet and Kissinger methods. The variation of local activation energy [E (c)(x)] that was determined by Ozawa method, decreased with the fraction of crystallization (x). The Avrami exponent (n(x)) increased with the increase in fraction of crystallization (x) suggesting that there was a change over in the crystallization process from the surface to the bulk.

The carrier type reversal (CTR) from p- to n-type in semiconducting chalcogenide glasses is an important and a long standing problem in glass science. Ge-Se glasses exhibit CTR when the metallic elements Bi and Pb are added. For example, bulk Ge42-xSe58Pbx glasses exhibit CTR around 8-9 at. % of Pb. These glasses have been prepared by melt quenching method. Glass transition temperature (T-g), Specific heat change between the liquid and the glassy states (Delta C-p) at T-g and the nonreversing heat flow (Delta H-nr) measured by modulated differential scanning calorimetry exhibit anomalies at 9 at. % of Pb. These observed anomalies are interpreted on the basis of the nano scale phase separation occurring in these glasses.

This study presents a detailed description on crustal metamorphic signatures of garnet-clinopyroxene-quartz-rutile-bearing high P-T granulites, Samgot unit, Imajingang belt, northwestern Korean Peninsula that formed during Permo-Triassic regional metamorphism related to the amalgamation of East Asian continental fragments. Lenses and blocks of high P-T granulites and garnet-bearing leucosomes occur within mafic metamorphic rocks (mainly amphibolites). The mafic blocks comprise relicts of granoblastic garnet and clinopyroxene with medium-grained quartz and rutile. These relict mineral assemblages are confined to local micro-domains and constitute remnants of peak metamorphism. Plagioclase and amphibole form only as retrograde phases in medium ton coarse-grained moats that rim grain boundaries between relict peak mineral assemblages. This microstructure represents the reaction between garnet, clinopyroxene, quartz and rutile in the presence of melt to form amphibole, plagioclase and titanite with minor biotite. The leucosome domains consist of euhedral garnets within the quartz-K feldspar-plagioclase (granitic) matrix, probably representing peritectic garnet growth along with melting. The rare earth element (REE) composition of minerals also support the peritectic garnet growth with a positive Eu/Eu* (positive Eu anomaly), while the relict garnet shows a slight negative anomaly typical for high-grade granulites. The peak-metamorphic conditions calculated from thermodynamic modeling and compositional isopleths indicate a temperature around c. 900 degrees C at a pressure around c. 20 kbar. The present P-T path indicates a clear multi-stage decompression history with initial decompression and cooling followed by a stage of decompression during hydration possibly during Late Triassic exhumation. The results from this study together with the presence of eclogites from the Hongsung area suggest that the Imjingang area and the western Gyeonggi massif likely resided at crustal levels deeper than those of the eastern and southern part of the Gyeonggi massif. Hyperbranched polyethers having poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segments at their molecular periphery were prepared by a simple procedure wherein an AB2 type monomer was melt-polycondensed with an A-type monomer, namely, heptaethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The presence of a large number of PEG units at the termini rendered a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) to these copolymers, above which they precipitated out of an aqueous solution. In an effort to understand the effect of various molecular structural parameters on their LCST, the length of the hydrophobic spacer segment within the hyperbranched core and the extent of PEGylation were varied. Additionally, linear analogues that incorporates pendant PEG segments were also prepared and comparison of their LCST with that of the hyperbranched analogue clearly revealed that hyperbranched topology leads to a substantial increase in the LCST, highlighting the importance of the peripheral placement of the PEG units.

We have synthesized FINEMET type amorphous Fe73.5Cu1Mo3Si13.5-xAlxB9 alloy by the single wheel melt spinning technique. The effect of Al substitution on the magnetic properties has been studied using a vibrating sample magnetometer, SQUID and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Magnetization and Curie temperature of the amorphous phase of the alloys were found to decrease with A] concentration. The results are attributed to the dilution effect of At on the magnetic moment of Fe and to the increase in Fe-Fe interaction distance resulting in the weakening of exchange interaction. Transparent glasses of BaNaB9O15 (BNBO) were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The amorphous and the glassy nature of the as-quenched samples were, respectively, confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The glass transition and crystallization parameters were evaluated under non-isothermal conditions using DSC. The correlation between the heating rate dependent glass transition and the crystallization temperatures was studied and the Kauzmann temperature was deduced for BNBO glass plates and powdered samples. The values of the Kauzmann temperature for the plates and powdered samples were 776 K and 768 K, respectively. An approximation- free method was used to evaluate the crystallization kinetic parameters for the BNBO glass samples. The effect of the sample thickness on the crystallization kinetics of BNBO glasses was also investigated.

Investigations on the electrical switching behavior and thermal studies using Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetry have been undertaken on bulk, melt-quenched Ge22Te78-,Is (3 <= x <= 10) chalcohalide glasses. All the glasses studied have been found to exhibit memory-type electrical switching. The threshold voltages of Ge22Te78-I-x(x) glasses have been found to increase with the addition of iodine and the composition dependence of threshold voltages of Ge22Te78-xIx glasses exhibits a cusp at 5 at.% of iodine. Also, the variation with composition of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of Ge22Te78-I-x(x) glasses, exhibits a broad hump around this composition. Based on the present results, the composition x = 5 has been identified as the inverse rigidity percolation threshold at which Ge22Te78-I-x(x) glassy system exhibits a change from a stressed rigid amorphous solid to a flexible polymeric glass. Further, a sharp minimum is seen in the composition dependence of non-reversing enthalpy (Delta H-nr) of Ge22Te78-I-x(x) glasses at x = 5, which is suggestive of a thermally reversing window at this composition. The possibility of obtaining relatively high dielectric constant polymer-ceramic composite by incorporating the giant dielectric constant material, CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) in a Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer matrix by melt mixing and hot pressing process was demonstrated. The structure, morphology and dielectric properties of the composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Thermal analysis. scanning electron microscope, and impedance analyzer. The effective dielectric constant a(epsilon(eff)) of the composite increased with increase in the volume fraction of CCTO at all the frequencies(100 Hz-1 MHz) under study. The dielectric loss did not show any variation up to 40% loading of CCTO, but showed an increasing trend beyond 40%. The room temperature dielectric constant as high as 95 at 100 Hz has been realized for the composite with 55 vol.% of CCTO, which has increased to about 190 at 150 degrees C. Theoretical models like Maxwell's, Clausius-Mossotti, Effective medium theory, logarithmic law and Yamada were employed to rationalize the dielectric behaviour of the composite and discussed. The formation of an ω-Al7Cu2Fe phase during laser cladding of quasicrystal-forming Al65Cu23.3Fe11.7 alloy on a pure aluminium substrate is reported. This phase is found to nucleate at the periphery of primary icosahedral-phase particles. A large number of ω-phase particles form an envelope around the icosahedral phase. On the outer side, they form an interface with an agr-Al solid solution. Detailed transmission electron microscopic observations show that the ω phase exhibits an orientation relationship with the icosahedral phase. Analysis of experimental results suggests that the ω phase forms by precipitation on an icosahedral phase by heterogeneous nucleation and grows into the aluminium-rich melt until supersaturation is exhausted. The microstructural observations are explained in terms of available models of phase transformations.
