Non-linear precoding for the downlink of a multiuser MISO (multiple-input single-output) communication system in the presence of imperfect channel state information (CSI) is considered. The base station is equipped with multiple transmit antennas and each user terminal is equipped with a single receive antenna. The CSI at the transmitter is assumed to be perturbed by an estimation error. We propose a robust minimum mean square error (MMSE) Tomlinson-Harashima precoder (THP)design, which can be formulated as an optimization problem that can be solved efficiently by the method of alternating optimization(AO). In this method of optimization, the entire set of optimization variables is partitioned into non-overlapping subsets, and an iterative sequence of optimizations on these subsets is carried out, which is often simpler compared to simultaneous optimization over all variables. In our problem, the application of the AO method results in a second-order cone program which can be numerically solved efficiently. The proposed precoder is shown to be less sensitive to imperfect channel knowledge. Simulation results illustrate the improvement in performance compared to other robust linear and non-linear precoders in the literature.

The three-point bending behavior of sandwich beams made up of jute epoxy skins and piecewise linear functionally graded (FG) rubber core reinforced with fly ash filler is investigated. This work studies the influence of the parameters such as weight fraction of fly ash, core to thickness ratio, and orientation of jute on specific bending modulus and strength. The load displacement response of the sandwich is traced to evaluate the specific modulus and strength. FG core samples are prepared by using conventional casting technique and sandwich by hand layup. Presence of gradation is quantified experimentally. Results of bending test indicate that specific modulus and strength are primarily governed by filler content and core to sandwich thickness ratio. FG sandwiches with different gradation configurations (uniform, linear, and piecewise linear) are modeled using finite element analysis (ANSYS 5.4) to evaluate specific strength which is subsequently compared with the experimental results and the best gradation configuration is presented. In this article, we report the structure of a 1:1 charge transfer complex between pyridine (PYR) and chloranil (CHL) in solution (CHCl(3)) from the measurement of hyperpolarizability (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios, D and D', respectively, by the hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique and state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations. Using linearly (electric field vector along X) and circularly polarized incident light, respectively, we have measured two macroscopic depolarization ratios D = I(X,X)(2 omega)/I(X,Z)(2 omega) and D' = I(X,C)(2 omega)/I(Z,C)(2 omega) in the laboratory fixed XYZ frame by detecting the second harmonic (SH) scattered light in a polarization resolved fashion. The stabilization energy and the optical gap calculated through the MP2/cc-pVDZ method using Gaussian09 were not significantly different to distinguish between the cofacial and T-shape structures. Only when the experimentally obtained beta(HRS) and the depolarization ratios, D and D', were matched with the theoretically computed values from single and double configuration interaction (SDCI) calculations performed using the ZINDO-SCRF technique, we concluded that the room temperature equilibrium structure of the complex is cofacial. This is in sharp contrast to an earlier theoretical prediction of the T-shape structure of the complex.

The problem of developing L2-stability criteria for feedback systems with a single time-varying gain, which impose average variation constraints on the gain is treated. A unified approach is presented which facilitates the development of such average variation criteria for both linear and nonlinear systems. The stability criteria derived here are shown to be more general than the existing results.

In this study, an effort has been made to study heavy rainfall events during cyclonic storms over Indian Ocean. This estimate is based on microwave observations from tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI). Regional scattering index (SI) developed for Indian region based on measurements at 19-, 21- and 85-GHz brightness temperature and polarization corrected temperature (PCT) at 85 GHz have been utilized in this study. These PCT and SI are collocated against Precipitation Radar (PR) onboard TRMM to establish a relationship between rainfall rate, PCT and SI. The retrieval technique using both linear and nonlinear regressions has been developed utilizing SI, PCT and the combination of SI and PCT. The results have been compared with the observations from PR. It was found that a nonlinear algorithm using combination of SI and PCT is more accurate than linear algorithm or nonlinear algorithm using either SI or PCT. Statistical comparison with PR exhibits the correlation coefficients (CC) of 0.68, 0.66 and 0.70, and root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.78, 1.96 and 1.68 mm/h from the observations of SI, PCT and combination of SI and PCT respectively using linear regressions. When nonlinear regression is used, the CC of 0.73, 0.71, 0.79 and RMSE of 1.64, 1.95, 1.54 mm/h are observed from the observations of SI, PCT and combination of SI and PCT, respectively. The error statistics for high rain events (above 10 mm/h) shows the CC of 0.58, 0.59, 0.60 and RMSE of 5.07, 5.47, 5.03 mm/h from the observations of SI, PCT and combination of SI and PCT, respectively, using linear regression, and on the other hand, use of nonlinear regression yields the CC of 0.66, 0.64, 0.71 and RMSE of 4.68, 5.78 and 4.02 mm/h from the observations of SI, PCT and combined SI and PCT, respectively.

The study extends the first order reliability method (FORM) and inverse FORM to update reliability models for existing, statically loaded structures based on measured responses. Solutions based on Bayes' theorem, Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations, and inverse reliability analysis are developed. The case of linear systems with Gaussian uncertainties and linear performance functions is shown to be exactly solvable. FORM and inverse reliability based methods are subsequently developed to deal with more general problems. The proposed procedures are implemented by combining Matlab based reliability modules with finite element models residing on the Abaqus software. Numerical illustrations on linear and nonlinear frames are presented. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The problem of updating the reliability of instrumented structures based on measured response under random dynamic loading is considered. A solution strategy within the framework of Monte Carlo simulation based dynamic state estimation method and Girsanov's transformation for variance reduction is developed. For linear Gaussian state space models, the solution is developed based on continuous version of the Kalman filter, while, for non-linear and (or) non-Gaussian state space models, bootstrap particle filters are adopted. The controls to implement the Girsanov transformation are developed by solving a constrained non-linear optimization problem. Numerical illustrations include studies on a multi degree of freedom linear system and non-linear systems with geometric and (or) hereditary non-linearities and non-stationary random excitations.

A comprehensive study of D-Na center dot center dot center dot A (D = H/F) complexes has been done using advanced ab initio and atoms in molecule (AIM) theoretical analyses. The correlation between electron density at bond critical point and binding energy gives a distinguishing feature for hydrogen bonding, different from the `electrostatic complexes' formed by LiD and NaD. Moreover, the LiD/NaD dimers have both linear and anti-parallel minima, as expected for electrostatic dipole-dipole interactions. The HF dimer has a quasi-linear minimum and the anti-parallel structure is a saddle point. Clearly, characterizing hydrogen bonding as `nothing but electrostatic interaction between two dipoles' is grossly in error.

Space-vector-based pulse width modulation (PWM) for a voltage source inverter (VSI) offers flexibility in terms of different switching sequences. Numerical simulation is helpful to assess the performance of a PWM method before actual implementation. A quick-simulation tool to simulate a variety of space-vector-based PWM strategies for a two-level VSI-fed squirrel cage induction motor drive is presented. The simulator is developed using C and Python programming languages, and has a graphical user interface (GUI) also. The prime focus being PWM strategies, the simulator developed is 40 times faster than MATLAB in terms of the actual time taken for a simulation. Simulation and experimental results are presented on a 5-hp ac motor drive.

A nearly constant switching frequency current hysteresis controller for a 2-level inverter fed induction motor drive is proposed in this paper: The salient features of this controller are fast dynamics for the current, inherent protection against overloads and less switching frequency variation. The large variation of switching frequency as in the conventional hysteresis controller is avoided by defining a current-error boundary which is obtained from the current-error trajectory of the standard space vector PWM. The current-error boundary is computed at every sampling interval based on the induction machine parameters and from the estimated fundamental stator voltage. The stator currents are always monitored and when the current-error exceeds the boundary, voltage space vector is switched to reduce the current-error. The proposed boundary computation algorithm is applicable in linear and over-modulation region and it is simple to implement in any standard digital signal processor: Detailed experimental verification is done using a 7.5 kW induction motor and the results are given to show the performance of the drive at various operating conditions and validate the proposed advantages.

Overland rain retrieval using spaceborne microwave radiometer offers a myriad of complications as land presents itself as a radiometrically warm and highly variable background. Hence, land rainfall algorithms of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) have traditionally incorporated empirical relations of microwave brightness temperature (Tb) with rain rate, rather than relying on physically based radiative transfer modeling of rainfall (as implemented in the TMI ocean algorithm). In this paper, sensitivity analysis is conducted using the Spearman rank correlation coefficient as benchmark, to estimate the best combination of TMI low-frequency channels that are highly sensitive to the near surface rainfall rate from the TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR). Results indicate that the TMI channel combinations not only contain information about rainfall wherein liquid water drops are the dominant hydrometeors but also aid in surface noise reduction over a predominantly vegetative land surface background. Furthermore, the variations of rainfall signature in these channel combinations are not understood properly due to their inherent uncertainties and highly nonlinear relationship with rainfall. Copula theory is a powerful tool to characterize the dependence between complex hydrological variables as well as aid in uncertainty modeling by ensemble generation. Hence, this paper proposes a regional model using Archimedean copulas, to study the dependence of TMI channel combinations with respect to precipitation, over the land regions of Mahanadi basin, India, using version 7 orbital data from the passive and active sensors on board TRMM, namely, TMI and PR. Studies conducted for different rainfall regimes over the study area show the suitability of Clayton and Gumbel copulas for modeling convective and stratiform rainfall types for the majority of the intraseasonal months. Furthermore, large ensembles of TMI Tb (from the most sensitive TMI channel combination) were generated conditional on various quantiles (25th, 50th, 75th, and 95th) of the convective and the stratiform rainfall. Comparatively greater ambiguity was observed to model extreme values of the convective rain type. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed model was tested by comparing the results with traditionally employed linear and quadratic models. Results reveal the superior performance of the proposed copula-based technique.

In this article, we study the problem of determining an appropriate grading of meshes for a system of coupled singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems having diffusion parameters with different magnitudes. The central difference scheme is used to discretize the problem on adaptively generated mesh where the mesh equation is derived using an equidistribution principle. An a priori monitor function is obtained from the error estimate. A suitable a posteriori analogue of this monitor function is also derived for the mesh construction which will lead to an optimal second-order parameter uniform convergence. We present the results of numerical experiments for linear and semilinear reaction-diffusion systems to support the effectiveness of our preferred monitor function obtained from theoretical analysis. Designing bioactive peptides containing thioamide functionality to modulate their pharmacological properties has been thwarted so far because of various synthetic challenges. The fast, efficient, and inexpensive synthesis and incorporation of a wide range of thionated amino acids into a growing peptide chain on a solid support is reported using standard Fmoc-based chemistry. The commonly employed methodology is comprehensively investigated and optimized with significant improvements regarding the quantity of reagents and reaction conditions. The utility of the protocol is further demonstrated in the synthesis of dithionated linear and monothionated cyclic peptides, which has been a daunting task.

The Cu2GeSe3 is prepared by solid state synthesis method. The high temperature XRD has been done at different temperature from 30 degrees C to 450 degrees C. The reitveld refinement confirms Cu2GeSe3 phase and orthorhombic crystal structure. The lattice constants are increasing with increase in the temperature and their rate of increase with respect to temperature are used for finding the thermal expansion coefficient. The calculation of the linear and volume coefficient of thermal expansion is done from 30 degrees C to 400 degrees C. Decrease in the values of linear expansion coefficients with temperature are observed along a and c axis. Since thermal expansion coefficient is the consequence of the distortion of atoms in the lattice; this can be further used to find the minimum lattice thermal conductivity at given temperature.
