Using a lattice model for adsorption in microporous materials, pure component adsorption isotherms are obtained within a mean field approximation for methane at 300 K and xenon at 300 and 360 K in zeolite NaA. It is argued that the increased repulsive adsorbate-adsorbate interactions at high coverages must play an important role in determining the adsorption behavior. Therefore, this feature is incorporated through a "coverage-dependent interaction'' model, which introduces a free, adjustable parameter. Another important feature, the site volume reduction, has been treated in two ways: a van der Waal model and a 1D hard-rod theory [van Tassel et al., AIChE J. 40, 925 (1994)]; we have also generalized the latter to include all possible adsorbate overlap scenarios. In particular, the 1D hard-rod model, with our coverage-dependent interaction model, is shown to be in best quantitative agreement with the previous grand canonical Monte Carlo isotherms. The expressions for the isosteric heats of adsorption indicate that attractive and repulsive adsorbate-adsorbate interactions increase and decrease the heats of adsorption, respectively. It is concluded that within the mean field approximation, our simple model for repulsive interactions and the 1D hard-rod model for site volume reduction are able to capture most of the important features of adsorption in confined regions. The statistical thermodynamics of adsorption in caged zeolites is developed by treating the zeolite as an ensemble of M identical cages or subsystems. Within each cage adsorption is assumed to occur onto a lattice of n identical sites. Expressions for the average occupancy per cage are obtained by minimizing the Helmholtz free energy in the canonical ensemble subject to the constraints of constant M and constant number of adsorbates N. Adsorbate-adsorbate interactions in the Brag-Williams or mean field approximation are treated in two ways. The local mean field approximation (LMFA) is based on the local cage occupancy and the global mean field approximation (GMFA) is based on the average coverage of the ensemble. The GMFA is shown to be equivalent in formulation to treating the zeolite as a collection of interacting single site subsystems. In contrast, the treatment in the LMFA retains the description of the zeolite as an ensemble of identical cages, whose thermodynamic properties are conveniently derived in the grand canonical ensemble. For a z coordinated lattice within the zeolite cage, with epsilon(aa) as the adsorbate-adsorbate interaction parameter, the comparisons for different values of epsilon(aa)(*)=epsilon(aa)z/2kT, and number of sites per cage, n, illustrate that for -1

Chlorine-35 NQR frequency and spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as a function of temperature in the range 77-300 K were carried out on 2-amino-3,5-dichloropyridine. Two NQR signals were observed and were assigned to the two chlorines present in the molecule using the additive model for substituent effects. The temperature dependence of the NQR frequency was analysed in terms of the torsional oscillations of the molecule and the torsional frequencies and their temperature dependence were calculated numerically using a two-mode approximation. The temperature dependence of the NQR spin-lattice relaxation time was found to be mainly due to the torsional oscillations of the molecule, with anharmonicity effects showing up at higher temperatures. The statistical mechanics of a two-dimensional Coulomb gas confined to one dimension is studied, wherein hard core particles move on a ring. Exact self-duality is shown for a version of the sine-Gordon model arising in this context, thereby locating the transition temperature exactly. We present asymptotically exact results for the correlations in the model and characterize the low- and high-temperature phases. Numerical simulations provide support to these renormalization group calculations. Connections with other interesting problems, such as the quantum Brownian motion of a panicle in a periodic potential and impurity problems, are pointed out.

Starting from the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations for a type II superconductor, we derive the equations of motion for the displacement field of a moving vortex lattice ignoring pinning and inertia. We show that it is linearly stable and, surprisingly, that it supports wavelike long-wavelength excitations arising not from inertia or elasticity but from the strain-dependent mobility of the moving lattice. It should be possible to image these waves, whose speeds are a few mu m/s, using fast scanning tunneling microscopy.

A layered iron sulfate of the composition [H3N(CH2)(2)NH2(CH2)(2)NH2(CH2)(2)NH3][(Fe3F6)-F-II(SO4)(2)], possessing a distorted Kagome lattice, prepared hydrothermally, is found to exhibit magnetic hysteresis like a ferrimagnet besides the characteristics of a frustrated system, like those of a spin glass.

Layered organic inorganic hybrids based on perovskite-derived alkylammonium lead halides have been demonstrated as important new materials in the construction of molecular electronic devices. Typical of this class of materials are the single-perovskite slab lead iodides of the general formula (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4. While for small n, these compounds are amenable to single-crystal structure determination, the increasing degree of disorder in the long chain (n = 12,14...) compounds makes such an analysis difficult. In this study, we use powder X-ray diffraction, and vibrational and C-13 NMR spectroscopies to establish the conformation, orientation and organization of hydrocarbon chains in the series of layered alkylammonium lead iodides (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4 (n = 12,16,18). We find that the alkyl chains adopt a tilted bilayer arrangement, while the structure of the inorganic layer remains invariant with respect to the value of n. Conformation-sensitive methylene stretching modes in the infrared and Raman spectra, as well as the C-13 NMR spectra indicate that bonds in the methylene chain are in trans configuration. The skeletal modes of the alkyl chain in the Raman spectra establish that there is a high degree of all-trans conformational registry for the values of n studied here. From the orientation dependence of the infrared spectra of crystals of (CnH2n+1NH3)(2)PbI4 ( n = 12,16), we find that the molecular axis of the all-trans alkyl chains are tilted away from the interlayer normal by an angle of 55degrees. This value of this tilt angle is consistent with the dependence of the c lattice expansion as a function of n, as determined from powder X-ray diffraction.

We discuss the properties of a one-dimensional lattice model of a driven system with two species of particles in which the mobility of one species depends on the density of the other. This model was introduced by Lahiri and Ramaswamy (Phys. Rev. Lett., 79, 1150 (1997)) in the context of sedimenting colloidal crystals, and its continuum version was shown to exhibit an instability arising from linear gradient couplings. In this paper we review recent progress in understanding the full phase diagram of the model. There are three phases. In the first, the steady state can be determined exactly along a representative locus using the condition of detailed balance. The system shows phase separation of an exceptionally robust sort, termed strong phase separation, which survives at all temperatures. The second phase arises in the threshold case where the first species evolves independently of the second, but the fluctuations of the first influence the evolution of the second, as in the passive scalar problem. The second species then shows phase separation of a delicate sort, in which long-range order coexists with fluctuations which do not damp down in the large-size limit. This fluctuation-dominated phase ordering is associated with power law decays in cluster size distributions and a breakdown of the Porod law. The third phase is one with a uniform overall density, and along a representative locus the steady state is shown to have product measure form. Density fluctuations are transported by two kinematic waves, each involving both species and coupled at the nonlinear level. Their dissipation properties are governed by the symmetries of these couplings, which depend on the overall densities. In the most interesting case,, the dissipation of the two modes is characterized by different critical exponents, despite the nonlinear coupling.

In this work, the effect of lattice orientation on the fields prevailing near a notch tip is investigated pertaining to various constraint levels in FCC single crystals. A modified boundary layer formulation is employed and numerical solutions under mode I, plane strain conditions are generated by assuming an elastic-perfectly plastic FCC single crystal. The analysis is carried out corresponding to different lattice orientations with respect to the notch line. It is found that the near-tip deformation field, especially the development of kink or slip shear bands is sensitive to the constraint level. The stress distribution and the size and shape of the plastic zone near the notch tip are also strongly influenced by the level of T-stress. The present results clearly establish that ductile single crystal fracture geometries would progressively lose crack tip constraint as the T-stress becomes more negative irrespective of lattice orientation. Also, the near-tip field for a range of constraint levels can be characterized by two-parameters such as K-T or J-Q as in isotropic plastic solids.

Investigations on the reactivity profile of the transient five-membered-ring cyclic carbonyl ylides, generated from alpha-diazo ketones, in the presence of the C=O group of various simple ketones and symrnetrical/unsymmetrical 1,2-diones were carried out. The reaction of alpha-diazo ketones with 1,2-naphthoquinone furnished interesting diastereomeric cycloadducts in which both the C=O groups acted as dipolarophilic sites. The similar reaction in the presence of several isatin derivatives afforded novel spiro dioxa-bridged indole derivatives as a mixture of diastereomers. The single crystal X-ray structure analysis manifestly revealed the mode of cycloaddition and the stereochemistry of two of the diastereomers. A diverse set of novel spiro epoxy-bridged tetrahydropyranone frameworks have been constructed in good yield via the tandem cyclization-cycloaddition of alpha-diazo ketones with the C=O group as heterodipolarophile in a regioselective manner. An efficient strategy for the contruction of spiro[4.5] decanes is described and involves a bridgehead substitution of a methoxyl group by a methyl group followed by an oxidative cleavage of the tricyclo[5.2.2.0(1,5)] undecane 25 to produce the spiro[4.5] decanes 31 & 32 which are intermediates in the synthesis of acorone. A novel one-pot conversion of alpha-methoxy carboxylic acid to alpha-methyl carboxylic acid is described.
