Several secondary alcohols undergo the Mitsunobu reaction with triphenylphosphine, diethyl azodicarboxylate and (1S)-(+)-ketopinic acid (0.5 equiv. each relative to alcohol) in CH2Cl2 solution at -23degreesC, to furnish the chiral secondary alcohol and its ketopinate ester (d.e. >95%,). Chromatographic separation of these and subsequent hydrolysis of the ketopinate ester (KOH EtOH/0degreesC) provides the chiral secondary alcohol in overall yields of similar to75% and e.e. of similar to80%. When the above Mitsunobu reaction is performed with 1 equiv. of all the reactants. an effective dynamic kinetic resolution of the alcohol is observed in two cases, the ketopinate esters being isolated in 63 and 75% yields and >95% d.e. Real-time kinetics of ligand-ligate interaction has predominantly been studied by either fluorescence or surface plasmon resonance based methods. Almost all such studies are based on association between the ligand and the ligate. This paper reports our analysis of dissociation data of monoclonal antibody-antigen (hCG) system using radio-iodinated hCG as a probe and nitrocellulose as a solid support to immobilize mAb. The data was analyzed quantitatively for a one-step and a two-step model. The data fits well into the two-step model. We also found that a fraction of what is bound is non-dissociable (tight-binding portion (TBP)). The TBP was neither an artifact of immobilization nor does it interfere with analysis. It was present when the reaction was carried out in homogeneous solution in liquid phase. The rate constants obtained from the two methods were comparable. The work reported here shows that real-time kinetics of other ligand-ligate interaction can be studied using nitrocellulose as a solid support. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

To resolve many flow features accurately, like accurate capture of suction peak in subsonic flows and crisp shocks in flows with discontinuities, to minimise the loss in stagnation pressure in isentropic flows or even flow separation in viscous flows require an accurate and low dissipative numerical scheme. The first order kinetic flux vector splitting (KFVS) method has been found to be very robust but suffers from the problem of having much more numerical diffusion than required, resulting in inaccurate computation of the above flow features. However, numerical dissipation can be reduced by refining the grid or by using higher order kinetic schemes. In flows with strong shock waves, the higher order schemes require limiters, which reduce the local order of accuracy to first order, resulting in degradation of flow features in many cases. Further, these schemes require more points in the stencil and hence consume more computational time and memory. In this paper, we present a low dissipative modified KFVS (m-KFVS) method which leads to improved splitting of inviscid fluxes. The m-KFVS method captures the above flow features more accurately compared to first order KFVS and the results are comparable to second order accurate KFVS method, by still using the first order stencil. Phase transformations of Al2O3 and Na2O · 6Al2O3 prepared by the gel route have been investigated for the first time by 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopy in combination with x-ray diffraction. Of particular interest in the study is the kinetics of the γ → α and γ → β transformations, respectively, in these two systems. Analysis of the kinetic data shows the important role of nucleation in both these transformations.

Nickel orthosilicate (Ni2SiO4) has been found to decompose into its component binary oxides in oxygen potential gradients at 1373 K. Nickel oxide was formed at the high oxygen potential boundary, while silica was detected at the low oxygen potential side. Significant porosity and fissures were observed near the Ni2SiO4/SiO2 interface and the SiO2 layer. The critical oxygen partial pressure ratio required for decomposition varied from 1.63 to 2.15 as the oxygen pressures were altered from 1.01 ⊠ 105 to 2.7X 10−4 Pa, well above the dissociation pressure of Ni2SiO4. Platinum markers placed at the boundaries of the Ni2SiO4 sample indicated growth of NiO at the higher oxygen potential boundary, without any apparent transport of material to the low oxygen potential side. However, significant movement of the bulk Ni2SiO4 crystal with respect to the marker was not observed. The decomposition of the silicate occurs due to the unequal rates of transport of Ni and Si. The critical oxygen partial pressure ratio required for decomposition is related both to the thermodynamic stability of Ni2SiO4 with respect to component oxides and the ratio of diffusivities of nickel and silicon. Kinetic decomposition of multicomponent oxides, first discovered by Schmalzried, Laqua, and co-workers [H. Schmalzried, W. Laqua, and P. L. Lin, Z. Natur Forsch. Teil A 34, 192 (1979); H. Schmalzried and W. Laqua, Oxid. Met. 15, 339 (1981); W. Laqua and H. Schmalzried, Chemical Metallurgy—A Tribute to Carl Wagner (Metallurgical Society of the AIME, New York, 1981), p. 29] has important consequences for their use at high temperatures and in geochemistry.

The study of directional derivative lead to the development of a rotationally invariant kinetic upwind method (KUMARI)3 which avoids dimension by dimension splitting. The method is upwind and rotationally invariant and hence truly multidimensional or multidirectional upwind scheme. The extension of KUMARI to second order is as well presented.

An interesting topic for quite some time is an intermediate phase observed in chalcogenide glasses, which is related to network connectivity and rigidity. This phenomenon is exhibited by Si-Te-In glasses also. It has been addressed here by carrying out detailed thermal investigations by using Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetry technique. An effort has also been made to determine the stability of these glasses using the data obtained from different thermodynamic quantities and crystallization kinetics of these glasses. Electrical switching behavior by recording I-V characteristics and variation of switching voltages with indium composition have been studied in these glasses for phase change memory applications. Kinetic schemes as pursued in CFD Centre are obtained by taking suitable moments of upwind schemes for Boltzmann equation without collision term. The primary ones among these are KFVS, LSKUM, KFMG and these have been applied successfully to a variety of flow problems using various meshes. These schemes have been found to be very robust.
