RATIONALE The ratio of the measured abundance of 13C18O bonding CO2 to its stochastic abundance, prescribed by the delta 13C and delta 18O values from a carbonate mineral, is sensitive to its growth temperature. Recently, clumped-isotope thermometry, which uses this ratio, has been adopted as a new tool to elucidate paleotemperatures quantitatively. METHODS Clumped isotopes in CO2 were measured with a small-sector isotope ratio mass spectrometer. CO2 samples digested from several kinds of calcium carbonates by phosphoric acid at 25 degrees C were purified using both cryogenic and gas-chromatographic separations, and their isotopic composition (delta 13C, delta 18O, Delta 47, Delta 48 and Delta 49 values) were then determined using a dual-inlet Delta XP mass spectrometer. RESULTS The internal precisions of the single gas Delta 47 measurements were 0.005 and 0.02 parts per thousand (1 SE) for the optimum and the routine analytical conditions, respectively, which are comparable with those obtained using a MAT 253 mass spectrometer. The long-term variations in the Delta 47 values for the in-house working standard and the heated CO2 gases since 2007 were close to the routine, single gas uncertainty while showing seasonal-like periodicities with a decreasing trend. Unlike the MAT 253, the Delta XP did not show any significant relationship between the Delta 47 and delta 47 values. CONCLUSIONS The Delta XP gave results that were approximately as precise as those of the MAT 253 for clumped-isotope analysis. The temporal stability of the Delta XP seemed to be lower, although an advantage of the Delta XP was that no dependency of delta 47 on Delta 47 was found. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The possibility of establishing an accurate relative chronology of the early solar system events based on the decay of short-lived Al-26 to Mg-26 (half-life of 0.72 Myr) depends on the level of homogeneity (or heterogeneity) of Al-26 and Mg isotopes. However, this level is difficult. to constrain precisely because of the very high precision needed for the determination of isotopic ratios, typically of +/- 5 ppm. In this study, we report for the first time a detailed analytical protocol developed for high precision in situ Mg isotopic measurements ((25)mg/(24)mg and (26)mg/Mg-24 ratios, as well as Mg-26 excess) by MC-SIMS. As the data reduction process is critical for both accuracy and precision of the final isotopic results, factors such as the Faraday cup (FC) background drift and matrix effects on instrumental fractionation have been investigated. Indeed these instrumental effects impacting the measured Mg-isotope ratios can be as large or larger than the variations we are looking for to constrain the initial distribution of Al-26 and Mg isotopes in the early solar system. Our results show that they definitely are limiting factors regarding the precision of Mg isotopic compositions, and that an under- or over-correction of both FC background instabilities and instrumental isotopic fractionation leads to important bias on delta Mg-25, delta(26)mg and Delta Mg-26 values (for example, olivines not corrected for FC background drifts display Delta Mg-26 values that can differ by as much as 10 ppm from the truly corrected value). The new data reduction process described here can then be applied to meteoritic samples (components of chondritic meteorites for instance) to accurately establish their relative chronology of formation.

In this paper we propose a postprocessing technique for a spectrogram diffusion based harmonic/percussion decom- position algorithm. The proposed technique removes har- monic instrument leakages in the percussion enhanced out- puts of the baseline algorithm. The technique uses median filtering and an adaptive detection of percussive segments in subbands followed by piecewise signal reconstruction using envelope properties to ensure that percussion is enhanced while harmonic leakages are suppressed. A new binary mask is created for the percussion signal which upon applying on the original signal improves harmonic versus percussion separation. We compare our algorithm with two recent techniques and show that on a database of polyphonic Indian music, the postprocessing algorithm improves the harmonic versus percussion decomposition significantly.

This paper addresses the problem of separation of pitched sounds in monaural recordings. We present a novel feature for the estimation of parameters of overlapping harmonics which considers the covariance of partials of pitched sounds. Sound templates are formed from the monophonic parts of the mixture recording. A match for every note is found among these templates on the basis of covariance profile of their harmonics. The matching template for the note provides the second order characteristics for the overlapped harmonics of the note. The algorithm is tested on the RWC music database instrument sounds. The results clearly show that the covariance characteristics can be used to reconstruct overlapping harmonics effectively.

In this work, we have prepared two donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) pi-conjugated oligomers to investigate the effect of phase separation on the performance of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. These charge transfer low band gap pi-conjugated oligomers (TTB and NMeTTB) were synthesized by Knoevenagel condensation of terthiophenecarbaldehyde and barbiturate appended pyran derivative. The thin film morphology of both the oligomers and along with electron acceptor 6,6]-phenyl-C60-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The blend of NMeTTB and PC61BM thin film yield highly ordered thin film, whereas there was clear phase separation between TTB and PC61BM in thin film. The BHJ solar cell was fabricated using a blend of NMeTTB and TTB with PC61BM acceptor in 1:1 ratio as active layer, and a power conversion efficiency of 1.8% was obtained. This device characteristic was compared with device having TTB:PC61BM as active layer, and large difference is observed in photocurrents. This poor performance of TTB in BHJ devices was attributed to the difference in the nanoscale morphology of the corresponding derivatives. We rationalize our findings based on the low charge carrier mobility in organic field-effect transistors and miscibility/phase separation parameter of binary components (oligomers and PC61BM) in the active layer of bulk heterojunction solar cells.

Crystallization-induced phase separation and segmental relaxations in poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVDF/PMMA) blends was systematically investigated by melt-rheology and broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the presence of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Different functionalized MWNTs (amine, -NH2; acid, -COOH) were incorporated in the blends by melt-mixing above the melting temperature of PVDF, where the blends are miscible, and the crystallization induced phase separation was probed in situ by shear rheology. Interestingly, only -NH2 functionalized MWNTs (a-MWNTs) aided in the formation of beta-phase (trans-trans) crystals in PVDF, whereas both the neat blends and the blends with -COOH functionalized MWNTs (c-MWNTs) showed only alpha-phase (trans-gauche-trans-gauche') crystals as inferred from wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Furthermore, blends with only a-MWNTs facilitated in heterogeneous nucleation in the blends manifesting in an increase in the calorimetric crystallization temperature and hence, augmented the theologically determined crystallintion induced phase separation temperature. The dielectric relaxations associated with the crystalline phase of PVDF (alpha(c)) was completely absent in the blends with a-MWNTs in contrast to neat blends and the blends with c-MWNTs in the dielectric loss spectra. The relaxations in the blends investigated here appeared to follow Havriliak-Negami (HN) empirical equations, and, more interestingly, the dynamic heterogeneity in the system could be mapped by an extra relaxation at higher frequency at the crystallization-induced phase separation temperature. The mean relaxation time (tau(HN)) was evaluated and observed to be delayed in the presence of MWNTs in the blends, more prominently in the case of blends with a-MWNTs. The latter also showed a significant increase in the dielectric relaxation strength (Delta epsilon). Electron microscopy and selective etching was used to confirm the localization of MWNTs in the amorphous phases of the interspherulitic regions as observed from scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The evolved crystalline morphology, during crystallization-induced phase separation, was observed to have a strong influence on the charge transport processes in the blends. These observations were further supported by the specific interactions (like dipole induced dipole interaction) between a-MWNTs and PVDF, as inferred from FTIR, and the differences in the crystalline morphology as observed from WXRD and polarized optical microscopy (POM).

Boundary layers are subject to favorable and adverse pressure gradients because of both the temporal and spatial components of the pressure gradient. The adverse pressure gradient may cause the flow to separate. In a closed loop unsteady tunnel we have studied the initiation of separation in unsteady flow past a constriction (bluff body) in a channel. We have proposed two important scalings for the time when boundary layer separates. One is based on the local pressure gradient and the other is a convective time scale based on boundary layer parameters. The flow visualization using a dye injection technique shows the flow structure past the body. Nondimensional shedding frequency (Strouhal number) is calculated based on boundary layer and momentum thicknesses. Strouhal number based on the momentum thickness shows a close agreement with that for flat plate and circular cylinder.

Here we report chromium isotope compositions, expressed as delta Cr-53/ 52 in per mil (&) relative to NIST 979, measured in selected Cr-rich minerals and rocks formed by the primary magmatic as well as the secondary metamorphic and weathering processes. The main objectives of this study were: (i) to further constrain the isotope composition of the Earth's mantle Cr inventory and its possible variation during geological history, based on the analysis of globally distributed and stratigraphically constrained mantle-derived chromites; and (ii) to investigate the magnitude and systematics of Cr isotope fractionation during oxidative weathering and secondary alteration (i. e., hydration, serpentinization) of the magmatic Cr sources. Specifically, we analyzed delta Cr-53/ 52 in a set of globally distributed mantle-derived chromites (FeMgCr2O4, n = 30) collected from various locations in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, and our results confirm that a chromite-hosted Earth's mantle Cr inventory is uniform at - 0.079 +/- 0.129& (2SD), which we named here as a ` canonical' mantle d 53/ 52 Cr signature. Furthermore our dataset of stratigraphically constrained chromites, whose crystallization ages cover most of the Earth's geological history, indicate that the bulk Cr isotope composition of the chromite-hosted mantle inventory has remained uniform, within about +/- 0.100&, since at least the Early Archean times (similar to 3500 million years ago, Ma). To investigate the systematics of Cr isotope fractionation associated with alteration processes we analyzed a number of secondary Cr-rich minerals and variably altered ultramafic rocks (i. e., serpentinized harzburgites, lherzolites) that revealed large positive delta Cr-53/ 52 anomalies that are systematically shifted to higher values with an increasing degree of alteration and serpentinization. The degree of aqueous alteration and serpentinization was quantified by the abundances of fluid-mobile (Rb, K) elements, and by the Loss On Ignition (LOI) parameter, which determines the amount of structurally bound water (OH/ H2O) present in secondary hydrated minerals like serpentine. Overall, we observed that altered ultramafic rocks that yielded the highest LOI values, and the lowest amounts of fluid mobile elements, also yielded the heaviest delta Cr-53/ 52 signatures. Therefore, we conclude that secondary alteration (i.e., hydration, serpentinization) of ultramafic rocks in near-surface oxidative environments tend to shift the bulk Cr isotope composition of the weathered products to isotopically heavier values, pointing to a dynamic redox cycling of Cr in the Earth's crustal and near-surface environments. Hence, if validated by future

Studies were carried out to assess the utility of the cellular and extracellular constituents of Bacillus megaterium for the flotation of sphalerite and galena minerals. Based on the flotation results on the individual minerals, it was observed that sphalerite was preferentially floated compared to galena. A maximum selectivity index (SI) value of 11.7 was achieved in the presence of the soluble fraction of the thermolysed cells, which was higher than that obtained with the intact cells (SI of 6.5) and the insoluble fraction of the thermolysed cells (SI of 9.6). The results of the various enzymatic treatment tests revealed that extracellular DNA played a vital role in the selective flotation of sphalerite. A noteworthy finding was that the single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) had a higher biocollector capacity vis-A -vis the double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), leading to better flotation efficiency. About 95 % recovery of sphalerite could be achieved from the mineral mixture by the combined addition of the ssDNA with the non-DNA components of the bacterial cells, resulting in a maximum SI of 19.1. Calcium and phosphate components of the nutrient media were found to be essential for better selectivity of separation of sphalerite. The mechanisms of microbe-mineral interaction are discussed.

Single-stranded DNA (ss-DNA) oligomers (dA(20), d(C(3)TA(2))(3)C-3] or dT(20)) are able to disperse single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in water at pH 7 through non-covalent wrapping on the nanotube surface. At lower pH, an alteration of the DNA secondary structure leads to precipitation of the SWNTs from the dispersion. The structural change of dA(20) takes place from the single-stranded to the A-motif form at pH 3.5 while in case of d(C(3)TA(2))(3)C-3] the change occurs from the single-stranded to the i-motif form at pH 5. Due to this structural change, the DNA is no longer able to bind the nanotube and hence the SWNT precipitates from its well-dispersed state. However, this could be reversed on restoring the pH to 7, where the DNA again relaxes in the single-stranded form. In this way the dispersion and precipitation process could be repeated over and over again. Variable temperature UV-Vis-NIR and CD spectroscopy studies showed that the DNA-SWNT complexes were thermally stable even at similar to 90 degrees C at pH 7. Broadband NIR laser (1064 nm) irradiation also demonstrated the stability of the DNA-SWNT complex against local heating introduced through excitation of the carbon nanotubes. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay confirmed the formation of a stable DNA-SWNT complex at pH 7 and also the generation of DNA secondary structures (A/i-motif) upon acidification. The interactions of ss-DNA with SWNTs cause debundling of the nanotubes from its assembly. Selective affinity of the semiconducting SWNTs towards DNA than the metallic ones enables separation of the two as evident from spectroscopic as well as electrical conductivity studies.

This work considers how the properties of hydrogen bonded complexes, X-H center dot center dot center dot Y, are modified by the quantum motion of the shared proton. Using a simple two-diabatic state model Hamiltonian, the analysis of the symmetric case, where the donor (X) and acceptor (Y) have the same proton affinity, is carried out. For quantitative comparisons, a parametrization specific to the O-H center dot center dot center dot O complexes is used. The vibrational energy levels of the one-dimensional ground state adiabatic potential of the model are used to make quantitative comparisons with a vast body of condensed phase data, spanning a donor-acceptor separation (R) range of about 2.4-3.0 angstrom, i.e., from strong to weak hydrogen bonds. The position of the proton (which determines the X-H bond length) and its longitudinal vibrational frequency, along with the isotope effects in both are described quantitatively. An analysis of the secondary geometric isotope effect, using a simple extension of the two-state model, yields an improved agreement of the predicted variation with R of frequency isotope effects. The role of bending modes is also considered: their quantum effects compete with those of the stretching mode for weak to moderate H-bond strengths. In spite of the economy in the parametrization of the model used, it offers key insights into the defining features of H-bonds, and semi-quantitatively captures several trends. Bacillus subtilis was used to demonstrate microbially induced selective flocculation to separate kaolinite and hematite. In neutral pH range of 7 - 8, 90 - 95% of hematite was selectively flocculated whereas 80 - 85% of kaolinite was dispersed using hematite - grown cells. Hematite-grown cells exhibited significant adsorption onto hematite than onto kaolinite, compared to unadapted cells. Kaolinite grown Bacillus subtilis secreted significant amounts of mineral specific proteins which conferred surface hydrophobicity whereas hematite-grown cells secreted more polysaccharides rendering hematite hydrophilic. Bacterial extracellular protein (EP) was isolated and the protein profiles of bacteria grown in the absence and presence of minerals were established.

Shock-Boundary Layer Interaction (SBLI) often occurs in supersonic/hypersonic flow fields. Especially when accompanied by separation (termed strong interaction), the SBLI phenomena largely affect the performance of the systems where they occur, such as scramjet intakes, thus often demanding the control of the interaction. Experiments on the strong interaction between impinging shock wave and boundary layer on a flat plate at Mach 5.96 are carried out in IISc hypersonic shock tunnel HST-2. The experiments are performed at moderate flow total enthalpy of 1.3 MJ/kg and freestream Reynolds number of 4 million/m. The strong shock generated by a wedge (or shock generator) of large angle 30.96 degrees to the freestream is made to impinge on the flat plate at 95 mm (inviscid estimate) from the leading edge, due to which a large separation bubble of length (75 mm) comparable to the distance of shock impingement from the leading edge is generated. The experimental simulation of such large separation bubble with separation occurring close to the leading edge, and its control using boundary layer bleed (suction and tangential blowing) at the location of separation, are demonstrated within the short test time of the shock tunnel (similar to 600 mu s) from time resolved schlieren flow visualizations and surface pressure measurements. By means of suction - with mass flow rate one order less than the mass flow defect in boundary layer - a reduction in separation length by 13.33% was observed. By the injection of an array of (nearly) tangential jets in the direction of mainstream (from the bottom of the plate) at the location of separation - with momentum flow rate one order less than the boundary layer momentum flow defect - 20% reduction in separation length was observed, although the flow field was apparently unsteady. We present detailed results from a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of phase-separation kinetics in polymer mixtures. Our MD simulations naturally incorporate hydrodynamic effects. We find that polymeric phase separation (with dynamically symmetric components) is in the same universality class as segregation of simple fluids: the degree of polymerization only slows down the segregation kinetics. For d = 2 polymeric fluids, the domain growth law is L(t) similar to t(phi) with phi showing a crossover from 1/3 -> 1/2 -> 2/3. For d = 3 polymeric fluids, we see the crossover phi = 1/3 -> 1. Our MD simulations do not yet access the inertial hydrodynamic regime (with L similar to t(2/3)) of phase separation in 3-d fluids. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
