The design of a three‐stage high‐gain amplifier for laboratory use in audiofrequency investigations is described. Four‐electrode tubes are used as screen‐grid amplifiers and an amplification of the order of 200 per stage is obtained. The inaccuracy of McDonald's formula for calculation of stage‐gain has been pointed out. The gain‐frequency characteristics are given for power as well as voltage amplification. It is shown that extreme care is necessary in the design of shielding to obtain high‐voltage amplification of the order of 120 decibels as obtained in this three‐stage amplifier.

Barium zirconium titanate [Ba(Zr0.05Ti0.95)O3, BZT] thin films were prepared by pulsed laser ablation technique and dc leakage current conduction behavior was extensively studied. The dc leakage behavior study is essential, as it leads to degradation of the data storage devices. The current-voltage (I-V) of the thin films showed an Ohmic behavior for the electric field strength lower than 7.5 MV/m. Nonlinearity in the current density-voltage (J-V) behavior has been observed at an electric field above 7.5 MV/m. Different conduction mechanisms have been thought to be responsible for the overall I-V characteristics of BZT thin films. The J-V behavior of BZT thin films was found to follow Lampert’s theory of space charge limited conduction similar to what is observed in an insulator with charge trapping moiety. The Ohmic and trap filled limited regions have been explicitly observed in the J-V curves, where the saturation prevailed after a voltage of 6.5 V referring the onset of a trap-free square region. Two different activation energy values of 1.155 and 0.325 eV corresponding to two different regions have been observed in the Arrhenius plot, which was attributed to two different types of trap levels present in the film, namely, deep and shallow traps.

We revisit the process e(+)e(-) -> gamma Z at the ILC with transverse beam polarization in the presence of anomalous CP- violating gamma ZZ coupling lambda(1) and gamma gamma Z coupling lambda(2). We point out that if the final- state spins are resolved, then it becomes possible to fingerprint the anomalous coupling Re lambda(1). 90% confidence level limit on Re lambda(1) achievable at ILC with center- of- mass energy of 500 GeVor 800 GeV with realistic initial beam polarization and integrated luminosity is of the order of few times of 10(-2) when the helicity of Z is used and 10(-3) when the helicity of gamma is used. The resulting corrections at quadratic order to the cross section and its influence on these limits are also evaluated and are shown to be small. The benefits of such polarization programmes at the ILC are compared and contrasted for the process at hand. We also discuss possible methods by which one can isolate events with a definite helicity for one of the final- state particles.

In this paper we investigate the effect of terminal substituents on the dynamics of spin and charge transport in donor-acceptor substituted polyenes [D-(CH)(x)-A] chains, also known as push-pull polyenes. We employ a long-range correlated model Hamiltonian for the D-(CH)(x)-A system, and time-dependent density matrix renormalization group technique for time propagating the wave packet obtained by injecting a hole at a terminal site, in the ground state of the system. Our studies reveal that the end groups do not affect spin and charge velocities in any significant way, but change the amount of charge transported. We have compared these push-pull systems with donor-acceptor substituted polymethine imine (PMI), D-(CHN)(x)-A, systems in which besides electron affinities, the nature of p(z) orbitals in conjugation also alternate from site to site. We note that spin and charge dynamics in the PMIs are very different from that observed in the case of push-pull polyenes, and within the time scale of our studies, transport of spin and charge leads to the formation of a ``quasi-static'' state.

We propose an iterative algorithm to simulate the dynamics generated by any n-qubit Hamiltonian. The simulation entails decomposing the unitary time evolution operator U (unitary) into a product of different time-step unitaries. The algorithm product-decomposes U in a chosen operator basis by identifying a certain symmetry of U that is intimately related to the number of gates in the decomposition. We illustrate the algorithm by first obtaining a polynomial decomposition in the Pauli basis of the n-qubit quantum state transfer unitary by Di Franco et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 230502 (2008)] that transports quantum information from one end of a spin chain to the other, and then implement it in nuclear magnetic resonance to demonstrate that the decomposition is experimentally viable. We further experimentally test the resilience of the state transfer to static errors in the coupling parameters of the simulated Hamiltonian. This is done by decomposing and simulating the corresponding imperfect unitaries.

We have investigated thermal properties of bulk Si15Te85-xAgx (4 <= x <= 20) glasses in detail, through alternating differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The composition dependence of thermal parameters reveal the signatures of rigidity percolation and chemical threshold at compositions x = 12 and x = 19, respectively. The stability and glass forming ability of these glasses have also been determined using the data obtained from different thermodynamic quantities and it is found that the Si15Te85-xAgx glasses in the region 12 <= x <= 17 are more stable when compared to other glasses of the same series. Further, the blueshift observed in Raman spectroscopy investigations, in the composition range 12 <= x <= 13, support the occurrence of stiffness threshold in this composition range. All Si15Te85-xAgx (4 <= x <= 20) glasses are found to exhibit memory type switching (for sample thickness 0.25 mm) in the input current range 3-9 mA. The effect of rigidity percolation and chemical thresholds on switching voltages are observed at x = 12 and 19, respectively. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3682759]

Our in situ x-ray diffraction and Raman measurements of Yb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore show that it undergoes a reversible structural phase transition from cubic pyrochlore to a monoclinic phase at similar to 28.6 GPa. Analysis of the x-ray data shows the transition to be thermodynamically first order and the high pressure phase to be substitutionally disordered. These experimental results are supported by our first principles calculations. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3681300]

HgCdTe mid wave infrared (MWIR) n(+)/nu/p(+) homo-junction photodiodes with planar architecture are designed, fabricated, and measured at room temperature. An improved analytical I-V model is reported by incorporating trap assisted tunneling and electric field enhanced Shockley-Read-Hall generation recombination process due to dislocations. Tunneling currents are fitted before and after the Auger suppression of carriers with energy level of trap (E-t), trap density (N-t), and the doping concentrations of n(+) and nu regions as fitting parameters. Values of E-t and N-t are determined as 0.79 E-g and similar to 9 x 10(14) cm(-3), respectively, in all cases. Doping concentration of nu region was found to exhibit nonequilibrium depletion from a value of 2 x 10(16) to 4 x 10(15) cm(-3) for n(+) doping of 2 x 10(17) cm(-3). Pronounced negative differential resistance is observed in the homo-junction HgCdTe diodes. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3682483]
Two-dimensional moist stratified turbulence and the emergence of vertically sheared horizontal flows
Resumo:
Moist stratified turbulence is studied in a two-dimensional Boussinesq system influenced by condensation and evaporation. The problem is set in a periodic domain and employs simple evaporation and condensation schemes, wherein both the processes push parcels towards saturation. Numerical simulations demonstrate the emergence of a moist turbulent state consisting of ordered structures with a clear power-law type spectral scaling from initially spatially uncorrelated conditions. An asymptotic analysis in the limit of rapid condensation and strong stratification shows that, for initial conditions with enough water substance to saturate the domain, the equations support a straightforward state of moist balance characterized by a hydrostatic, saturated, vertically sheared horizontal flow (VSHF). For such initial conditions, by means of long time numerical simulations, the emergence of moist balance is verified. Specifically, starting from uncorrelated data, subsequent to the development of a moist turbulent state, the system experiences a rather abrupt transition to a regime which is close to saturation and dominated by a strong VSHF. On the other hand, initial conditions which do not have enough water substance to saturate the domain, do not attain moist balance. Rather, the system is observed to remain in a turbulent state and oscillates about moist balance. Even though balance is not achieved with these general initial conditions, the time scale of oscillation about moist balance is much larger than the imposed time scale of condensation and evaporation, thus indicating a distinct dominant slow component in the moist stratified two-dimensional turbulent system. Modular chiral I3-organochalcogeno amines, ArYCH2CH(R)NH2 (4a-4g) where R = Me, Bz, Ph; and ArY = PhS, BzSe and 4-MeOC6H4Te respectively have been synthesized and characterized. Compounds 4a-4g were synthesized (Method II) from chiral aminoalkyl 13-methanesulfonate hydrochlorides, MsOCH2CH(R)NH3+ center dot Cl- (2a-2c) through nucleophilic displacement of MsO- with organochalcogenolate (ArY-). In another attempt (Method I) chiral beta-organotelluro amines (4a-4c) were prepared by deprotection of chiral N-boc I3-organotelluro amides, 4-MeOC6H4TeCH2CH(R)NH-Boc (3a-3c), which in turn, 13,-,1 were made from chiral N-boc 13-methanesulfonate amides (la-lc) and ArTeNa. 1H, and FTIR spectra of all the compounds (3a-3c and 4a-4g) were characteristic. The composition of 3a-3c was determined by elemental analysis. The a]TD values of 3b-3c and 4a-4g were determined. The single crystal structures of (S)-2b and (R)-2c were determined by X-Ray diffraction studies. Both (S)-2b and (R)2c were crystallized in orthorhombic system and the Flack parameter x was found 0.08(12) and 0.00(2) respectively. The crystal of (S)-2b contain two asymmetric units with gauche (A) and staggered (B) conformations. There are NH Cl-, NH-O and CH-O intra and intermolecular secondary interactions in (S)-2b and (R)-2c resulting in supramolecular structures. (C) 2015 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.
