Based on a method presented in detail in a previous work by the authors, similar solutions have been obtained for the steady inviscid quasi‐one‐dimensional nonreacting flow in the supersonic nozzle of a CO2–N2 gasdynamic laser system, with either H2O or He as the catalyst. It has been demonstrated how these solutions could be used to optimize the small‐signal gain coefficient on a specified vibrational‐rotational transition. Results presented for a wide range of mixture compositions include optimum values for the small‐signal gain, area ratio, reservoir temperature, and a binary scaling parameter, which is the product of reservoir pressure and nozzle shape factor.

Based on a method proposed by Reddy and Daum, the equations governing the steady inviscid nonreacting gasdynamic laser (GDL) flow in a supersonic nozzle are reduced to a universal form so that the solutions depend on a single parameter which combines all the other parameters of the problem. Solutions are obtained for a sample case of available data and compared with existing results to validate the present approach. Also, similar solutions for a sample case are presented.

The airborne pollen of the South American weed, Parthenium hysterophorus (American feverfew), accidentally introduced into India was found to be responsible for severe allergic rhinitis. A random clinical survey conducted on 2035 residents of Bangalore city with the aid of questionnaires and skin tests revealed that 7.1% of the study population was suffering from allergic rhinitis due to exposure to Parthenium pollen. Skin-prick tests performed on 1294 clinic patients suffering from nasobronchial allergy during the past 4 years have also shown that 42.5% were sensitive to Parthenium pollen. IgE and IgG antibodies specific for Parthenium pollen allergens were demonstrable in the sera of Parthenium-sensitive rhinitis patients. The specificity of these antibodies to Parthenium allergens was established by ELISA. A 7- to 11-fold higher stimulation was observed when lymphocytes from two Parthenium-sensitive rhinitis patients were treated in vitro with Parthenium pollen extract. To our knowledge, nowhere in the world has such a high incidence of allergic rhinitis due to a single pollen ever been reported.

We report experimental studies which confirm our prediction, namely that the ordered structure of poly(hydroxypro1ine) in solution corresponds to a left-handed helical structure with intrachain hydrogen bonds. The CD studies show that the poly(hydroxypro1ine) molecule has essentially the same conformation in aqueous solution and in the film obtained subsequently by evaporation. X-ray diffraction patterns of the sample in this form (B form) have been recorded at different relative humidities. The patterns recorded at relative humidities over 66% can be interpreted in terms of a helical structure with intrachain hydrogen bonds. These results lead us to conclude that the ordered conformation of poly(hydroxypro1ine) in solution is form B and not form A. This offers a simple explanation for the greater stability of the poly(hydroxypro1ine) helix in solution as compared to the poly(pro1ine) form I1 helix and also for the absence of mutarotation for poly(hydroxypro1ine).

Model building studies on poly(hydroxypro1ine) indicate that in addition to the well-known helical structure of form A, a left-handed helical structure with trans peptide units and with h = 2.86 A and n = 2.67 (i.e., 8 residues in 3 turns) is also possible. In this structure which is shown to be in agreement with X-ray data of the form B in the next paper, the y-hydroxyl group of an (i + 1)th Hyp residue is hydrogen bonded to the carbonyl oxygen of an (i - 1)th residue. The possibility of a structure with cis peptide units is ruled out. It is shown that both forms A and B are equally favorable from considerations of intramolecular energies. Since form B is further stabilized by intrachain hydrogen bonds, we believe that this is likely to be the ordered conformation for poly(hydroxypro1ine) in water.

A generalized two‐dimensional flow‐radiation coupled model to extract power from a gasdynamic laser is proposed. The model is used for the study of power extraction from a 9.4‐μm CO2 downstream‐mixing gasdynamic laser, where a cold CO2+H2 stream is mixed with a vibrationally excited N2 stream at the nozzle exits. This model is developed by coupling radiation with the two‐dimensional, unsteady, laminar and viscous flow modeling needed for such systems. The analysis showed that the steady‐state value of 9.4‐μm intensity as high as 5×107 W/m2 can be obtained from the system studied. The role of H2 relaxant in the power extraction process has also been investigated.

A Schiff base metal complex, [Cu(II)(PLP-DL-tyrosinato)(H2O)].4H2O (PLP = pyridoxal phosphate), with the molecular formula CuC17O13N2H27P has been prepared and characterized by magnetic, spectral, and X-ray structural studies. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1BAR with a = 8.616 (2) angstrom, b = 11.843 (3) angstrom, c = 12.177 (3) angstrom, alpha = 103.40 (2)degrees, beta = 112.32 (2)degrees, gamma = 76.50 (1)degrees, and Z = 2. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by least-squares techniques to a final R value of 0.057 for 3132 independent reflections. The coordination geometry around Cu(II) is distorted square pyramidal with phenolic oxygen, imino nitrogen, and carboxylate oxygen from the Schiff base ligand and water oxygen as basal donor atoms. The axial site is occupied by a phosphate oxygen from a neighboring molecule, thus resulting in a one-dimensional polymer. The structure reveals pi-pi interaction of the aromatic side chain of the amino acid with the pyridoxal pi system. A comparative study is made of this complex with similar Schiff base complexes. The variable-temperature magnetic behavior of this compound shows a weak antiferromagnetic interaction.

The surfactant-assisted seed-mediated growth method was used for the formation of gold nanorods (GNRs) directly on gold (Au) and indium tin oxide (ITO) surfaces. Citrate-stabilized similar to 2.6 nm spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were first self-assembled on ITO or Au surfaces modified with (3-mercaptopropyl)-trimethoxysilane (MPTS) sol-gel film and then immersed in a cationic surfactant growth solution to form GNRs. The growth of GNRs on the MPTS sol gel film modified ITO surface was monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy. The ITO surface with the attached spherical AuNPs shows a surface plasmon resonance band at 550 nm. The intensity of this absorption band increases while increasing the immersion time of the AuNP-modified ITO surface into the growth solution, and after 5 h, an additional shoulder band around 680 nm was observed. The intensity of this shoulder band increases, and it was shifted to longer wavelength as the immersion time of the AuNP-modified ITO surface into the growth solution increases. After 20 h, a predominant wave at 720 nm was observed along with a band at 550 nm. Further immersion of the modified ITO surface into the growth solution did not change the absorption characteristics. The bands observed at 550 and 720 nm were characteristics of GNRs, corresponding to transverse and longitudinal waves, respectively. The AFM images showed the presence of GNRs on the surface of the MPTS sol gel modified ITO surface with a typical length of similar to 100-120 nm and a width of similar to 20-22 nm in addition to a few spherical AuNPs, indicating that seeded spherical AuNPs were not completely involved in the GNRs' formation. Finally, the electrocatalytic activity of the surface-grown GNRs on the MPTS sol gel film modified Au electrode toward the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) was studied. Unlike a polycrystalline Au electrode, the surface-grown GNR-modified electrode shows two well-defined voltammetric peaks for AA at 0.01 and 0.35 V in alkaline, neutral, and acidic pHs. The cause for the observed two oxidation peaks for AA was due to the presence of both nanorods and spherical nanoparticles on the electrode surface. The presence of spherical AuNPs on the MPTS sol gel film oxidized AA at more positive potential, whereas the GNRs oxidized AA at less positive potential. The observed 340 mV less positive potential shift in the oxidation of AA suggested that GNRs are better electrocatalysts for the oxidation of AA than the spherical AuNPs.

Experimental studies on the measurement of pressure fields in the region of separating and reattaching flows behind several two-dimensional fore-bodies and one axisymmetric body are reported. In particular, extensive measurements of mean pressure, surface pressure fluctuation, and pressure fluctuation within the flow were made for a series of two-dimensional fore-body shapes consisting of triangular nose with varying included angle. The measurements from different bodies are compared and one of the important findings is that the maximum values of rms pressure fluctuation levels in the shear layer approaching reattachment are almost equal to the maximum value of the surface fluctuation levels.

Langevin dynamics simulation studies have been employed to calculate the temperature dependent free energy surface and folding characteristics of a 500 monomer long linear alkane (polyethylene) chain with a realistic interaction potential. Both equilibrium and temperature quench simulation studies have been carried out. Using the shape anisotropy parameter (S) of the folded molecule as the order parameter, we find a weakly first order phase transition between the high-temperature molten globule and low-temperature rodlike crystalline states separated by a small barrier of the order of k(B)T. Near the melting temperature (580 K), we observe an intriguing intermittent fluctuation with pronounced ``1/f noise characteristics'' between these two states with large difference in shape and structure. We have also studied the possibilities of different pathways of folding to states much below the melting point. At 300 K starting from the all-trans linear configuration, the chain folds stepwise into a very regular fourfold crystallite with very high shape anisotropy. Whereas, when quenched from a high temperature (900 K) random coil regime, we identify a two step transition from the random coiled state to a molten globulelike state and, further, to a anisotropic rodlike state. The trajectory reveals an interesting coupling between the two order parameters, namely, radius of gyration (R-g) and the shape anisotropy parameter (S). The rodlike final state of the quench trajectory is characterized by lower shape anisotropy parameter and significantly larger number of gauche defects as compared to the final state obtained through equilibrium simulation starting from all-trans linear chain. The quench study shows indication of a nucleationlike pathway from the molten globule to the rodlike state involving an underlying rugged energy landscape. The products of lipid mobilization in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) seeds as a function of time immediately after imbibition are monitored by 13C NMR. Different parts of the embryonic axis, namely, the radicle, hypocotyl, and plumule, exhibit characteristic time dependent 13C NMR spectra observed at 24-h intervals after imbibition. The various stages in the transformation of storage lipids present in different parts of the embryonic axis are clearly demonstrated. The transformaton of storage lipids is completed first in the radicle followed by the hypocotyl and finally the plumule. A mechanism of the transformation of the storage lipids is discussed.
Synthesis, characterization, and thermal degradation studies on group VIA derived weak-link polymers
Resumo:
Polymers containing group VIA derived weak links, viz. poly(styrene disulfide) (PSD), poly- (styrene tetrasulfide) (PST), and poly(styrene diselenide) (PSDSE), have been synthesized. The polymers PSD and PST were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, TGA, and fast atom bombardment m w spectrometric (FABMS) techniques. The presence of different configurational sequences in PSD and PST were identified by *3C NMR spectroscopy. PSDSE, being insoluble in common organic solvents, was characterized using solid-state lac NMR (CP-MAS) spectroscopy. Thermal degradation of polymers under direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometric (DP-MS) conditions revealed that all the polymers undergo degradation through the weaklink scission. A comparative study of the pyrolysis products of these polymers with that of poly(styrene peroxide) (PSP) revealed a smooth transformation down the group with no monomer (styrene or oxygen) formation in PSP to only styrene and selenium metal in PSDSE. This trend of group VIA is explained from the energetics of the C-X bond (X = 0, S, and Se) which also seems to be important in addition to the weak X-X bond cleavage. In PSP and PSD, the behavior is also explained from the energetics of the alkoxy and thiyl radicals. The unique exothermic degradation in PSP compared to endothermic degradation in PSD and PSDSE is explained from the nature of the producta of degradation.

We report on the X-band (similar to 9.43 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) investigations carried out on polycrystalline Ga1-xMnxSb (x=0.02). A strong EPR signal with an effective g factor (g(eff)) close to 2.00 was observed, suggesting that the ionic state of Mn which replaces Ga ion in the lattice, is Mn2+ attributable to Delta M=1 transition of the ionized Mn acceptor A(-), Mn (3d(5)). The apparent absence of EPR signal, typical for neutral Mn acceptor at g=2.7 suggests either no such centers are present or the signal broadens beyond detection limit. The temperature dependent EPR studies combined with dc magnetization data suggest the possible coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases at very low temperatures.
