The unsteady laminar incompressible three-dimensional boundary layer flow and heat transfer on a flat plate with an attached cylinder have been studied when the free stream velocity components and wall temperature vary inversely as linear and quadratic functions of time, respectively. The governing semisimilar partial differential equations with three independent variables have been solved numerically using a quasilinear finite-difference scheme. The results indicate that the skin friction increases with parameter ? which characterizes the unsteadiness in the free stream velocity and the streamwise distance Image , but the heat transfer decreases. However, the skin friction and heat transfer are found to change little along Image . The effect of the Prandtl number on the heat transfer is found to be more pronounced when ? is small, whereas the effect of the dissipation parameter is more pronounced when ? is comparatively large.

A single component accelerometer-based force balance is developed, calibrated, and used for high enthalpy applications. Functionality of this force balance, for such applications, is demonstrated for the first time during high enthalpy tests in a newly established free piston-driven shock tunnel, HST3, using a 60 degrees apex angle blunt cone model at 0 degrees angle of incidence. Usefulness of this force balance is also confirmed, for much complicated high enthalpy flow situations, during the drag reduction studies with counterflow supersonic jet from the stagnation point.

Characterization of melting process in a Phase Change Material (PCM)-based heat sink with plate fin type thermal conductivity enhancers (TCEs) is numerically studied in this paper. Detailed parametric investigations are performed to find the effect of aspect ratio of enclosure and the applied heat flux on the thermal performance of the heat sinks. Various non-dimensional numbers, such as Nusselt number (Nu), Rayleigh number (Ra), Stefan number (Ste) and Fourier number (Fo) based on a characteristic length scale, are identified as important parameters. The half fin thickness and the fin height are varied to obtain a wide range of aspect ratios of an enclosure. It is found that a single correlation of Nu with Ra is not applicable for all aspect ratios of enclosure with melt convection taken into account. To find appropriate length scales, enclosures with different aspect ratios are divided into three categories, viz. (a) shallow enclosure, (b) rectangular enclosure and (c) tall enclosure. Accordingly, an appropriate characteristic length scale is identified for each type of enclosure and correlation of Nu with Ra based on that characteristic length scale is developed. This paper is concerned with grasping biological cells in aqueous medium with miniature grippers that can also help estimate forces using vision-based displacement measurement and computation. We present the design, fabrication, and testing of three single-piece, compliant miniature grippers with parallel and angular jaw motions. Two grippers were designed using experience and intuition, while the third one was designed using topology optimization with implicit manufacturing constraints. These grippers were fabricated using different manufacturing techniques using spring steel and polydimethylsiloxane ( PDMS). The grippers also serve the purpose of a force sensor. Toward this, we present a vision-based force-sensing technique by solving Cauchy's problem in elasticity using an improved algorithm. We validated this technique at the macroscale, where there was an independent method to estimate the force. In this study, the gripper was used to hold a yeast ball and a zebrafish egg cell of less than 1 mm in diameter. The forces involved were estimated to be about 30 and 10 mN for the yeast ball and the zebrafish egg cell, respectively.

The active structural component of a capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) is the top plate which vibrates under the influence of a time-varying electrostatic force thereby producing ultrasound waves of the desired frequency in the surrounding medium. Analysis of MEMS devices which rely on electrostatic actuation is complicated due to the fact that the structural deformations alter the electrostatic forces, which redistribute and modify the applied loads. Hence, it becomes imperative to consider the electrostatics-structure coupling aspect in the design of these devices. This paper presents an approximate analytical solution for the static deflection of a thin, clamped circular plate caused by electrostatic forces which are inherently nonlinear. Traditionally, finite element simulations using some commercial software such as ANSYS are employed to determine the structural deflections caused by electrostatic forces. Since the structural deformation alters the electrostatic field, a coupled-field simulation is required wherein the electrostatic mesh is continuously updated to coincide with the deflection of the structure. Such simulations are extremely time consuming, in addition to being nontransparent and somewhat hard to implement. We employ the classical thin-plate theory which is adequate when the ratio of the diameter to thickness of the plate is very large, a situation commonly prevalent in many MEMS devices, especially the CMUTs. We solve the thin-plate electrostatic-elastic equation using the Galerkin-weighted residual technique, under the assumption that the deflections are small in comparison to the thickness of the plate. The evaluation of the electrostatic force between the two plates is simplified due to the fact that the electrostatic gap is much smaller than the lateral dimensions of the device. The results obtained are compared to those found from ANSYS simulations and an excellent agreement is observed between the two. The pull-in voltage predicted by our model is close to the value predicted by ANSYS simulations.

A boundary layer analysis of mixed convective motion over a hot horizontal flat plate is performed under the conditions of steady flow and low speed. Use of the Howarth-Dorodnytsyn transformation makes it possible to dispense with the usual Boussinesq approximation, and variable gas properties are accounted for via the assumption that dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity are proportional to the absolute temperature. The formulation presented enables the entire mixed convection regime to be described by a single set of equations. Finite difference solutions when the Prandtl number is 0.72 are obtained over the entire range of the mixed convection parameter ξ from 0 (free convection) to 1 (forced convection) and heating parameter ▵ values from 2 to 12. The effects of both ξ and ▵on the velocity profiles, the temperature profiles, and the variation of skin friction and heat transfer functions are clearly illustrated in tables and graphs.

We present a biquadratic Lagrangian plate bending element with consistent fields for the constrained transverse shear strain functions. A technique involving expansion of the strain interpolations in terms of Legendre polynomials is used to redistribute the kinematically derived shear strain fields so that the field-consistent forms (i.e. avoiding locking) are also variationally correct (i.e. do not violate the variational norms). Also, a rational method of isoparametric Jacobian transformation is incorporated so that the constrained covariant shear strain fields are always consistent in whatever general quadrilateral form the element may take. Finally the element is compared with another formulation which was recently published. The element is subjected to several robust bench mark tests and is found to pass all the tests efficiently.

In this paper, dynamic response of an infinitely long beam resting on a foundation of finite depth, under a moving force is studied. The effect of foundation inertia is included in the analysis by modelling the foundation as a series of closely spaced axially vibrating rods of finite depth, fixed at the bottom and connected to the beam at the top. Viscous damping in the beam and foundation is included in the analysis. Steady state response of the beam-foundation system is obtained. Detailed numerical results are presented to study the effect of various parameters such as foundation mass, velocity of the moving load, damping and axial force on the beam. It is shown that foundation inertia can considerably reduce the critical velocity and can also amplify the beam response.

A boundary layer solution for the conjugate forced convection flow of an electrically conducting fluid over a semi-infinite flat plate in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is presented. The governing nonsimilar partial differential equations are solved numerically using the Keller box method. Values of the temperature profiles of the plate are obtained for various values of the parameters entering the problem and are given in a table and shown on graphs.
