Electronic and magnetic properties of Ln1xSrxCoO3 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd) systems show that above a critical value of x, the d electrons become itinerant while the materials become ferromagnetic at low temperatures. The ferromagnetic component increases with increase in x and decrease in temperature. The Curie temperature increases with x and decreases with decrease in the size of the rare-earth ion. Incorporation of Ba2+ in LaCoO3 favors itinerant electron ferromagnetism relative to Sr2+ while Ca2+ is less favorable than Sr2+.

We report experimental evidence for a huge pair breaking effect induced by spin polarized quasiparticles in a YBa2Cu3O7-delta/La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 bi-layer fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. The temperature dependent magnetization measurements show evidence for the presence of both ferromagnetic and diamagnetic phases in the bi-layer. The current dependent electrical transport studies in the bi-layer exhibit a significant reduction in the superconducting transition temperature with the increase in applied current as compared to a single YBa2Cu3O7-delta layer and it follows a I-2/3 dependence in accordance with the pair breaking effect. Here, we find that the current driven from a ferromagnetic electrode with low spin polarization, such as La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (-11%), into the superconductor can act as a strong pair breaker. This indicates that the spin polarization of the injecting electrode is not the only criterion in determining the pair breaking effect, rather the transparency of the interface for the spin polarization may also be significant. More interestingly, the spin diffusion length for YBa2Cu3O7-delta has a much longer length scale than that reported earlier in the study of ferromagnetic/superconducting heterostructures.

Two new neutral copper-azido polymers [Cu-3(N-3)(6)(tmen)(2)](n)(1)and [Cu-6(N-3)(12)(deen)(2)](n) (2) [tmen = N,N,N, N-tetramethylethylenediamine and deen = N,N-diethylethylenediamine] have been synthesized by using lower molar equivalents of the chelating diamine ligands with Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and an excess of NaN3. The single crystal X-ray structure shows that in the basic unit of the 1D complex 1, the three Cu-II ions are linked by double end-on azido bridges with Cu-N-EO-Cu angles on both sides of the magnetic exchange critical angle of 108 degrees. Complex 2 is a 3D framework of a basic u-6 cluster. Cryomagnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperature exhibit dominant ferromagnetic behavior in both the complexes. Density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) have been performed on the trinuclear unit to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation of the overall ferromagnetic behavior shown by the complex 1.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and magnetic properties of nanowires of Pr0.57Ca0.41Ba0.02MnO3 (PCBMO) are studied and compared with those of the bulk material. PCBMO nanowires with diameter of 80-90 nm and length of similar to 3.5 mu m were synthesized by a low reaction temperature hydrothermal method and the bulk sample was prepared following a solid-state reaction route. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The bulk PCBMO manganite exhibits charge order at 230 K along with a ferromagnetic transition at 110 K. However, superconducting quantum interference device measurements on the PCBMO nanowires show a complete `melting' of charge ordering and a ferromagnetic transition at 115 K. This result is confirmed by the EPR intensity behavior as well. However, the EPR line width, which is reflective of the spin dynamics, shows a shallow minimum for nanowires at the temperature corresponding to the charge-ordering transition, i.e., 230 K. We interpret this result as an indication of the presence of charge-ordering fluctuations in the nanowires even though the static charge order is absent, thus heralding the occurrence of charge order in the bulk sample.

Phase separation (PS) in hole-doped cobaltites (La1-xSrxCoxO3) is drawing renewed interest recently. In particular, the magnetic behavior of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 has been subjected to a controversial debate for the past several years; while some groups show evidence for magnetic PS, others show spin glass (SG) behavior. Here, an attempt is made to resolve the controversy related to ``PS versus SG'' behavior in this compound. We present the results of a comprehensive investigation of the dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, and the magnetotransport properties of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 samples. We contemplate that the magnetic PS in La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 is neither intrinsic nor inherent, but it is a consequence of the preparation conditions. It is realized that a low temperature annealed (LTA) sample shows PS whereas the high temperature annealed (HTA) sample shows SG behavior. The Brillouin-like behavior of field cooled dc magnetization and apparently no frequency dependent peak shift in ac susceptibility for the LTA sample characterize it to be of ferromagneticlike whereas a kink in field cooled dc magnetization and a considerable amount (similar to 3 K) of frequency dependent peak shift in the ac susceptibility for the HTA sample characterize it to be of SG state. The magnetotransport properties show that the HTA sample is more semiconducting as compared to the LTA sample. This is interpreted in terms of the presence of isolated as well as coalescing metallic ferromagnetic clusters in the case of LTA sample. The magnetoresistance (MR) at 10 K for the HTA sample exhibits a huge value (similar to 65%) as compared to the LTA sample, and it monotonically decreases with the rise in temperature. Such a high value of MR in the case of HTA sample is strongly believed to be due to the spin dependent part of random potential distribution. Further, the slow decay of remnant magnetization with progress of time and the existence of hysteresis at higher temperatures (up to 200 K) in the case of LTA sample as compared to the HTA sample clearly unveil different magnetic states associated with them.

We study the transport properties of the Dirac fermions with a Fermi velocity v(F) on the surface of a topological insulator across a ferromagnetic strip providing an exchange field J over a region of width d. We show that the conductance of such a junction, in the clean limit and at low temperature, changes from oscillatory to a monotonically decreasing function of d beyond a critical J. This leads to the possible realization of a magnetic switch using these junctions. We also study the conductance of these Dirac fermions across a potential barrier of width d and potential V-0 in the presence of such a ferromagnetic strip and show that beyond a critical J, the criteria of conductance maxima changes from chi = eV(0)d/(h) over barv(F) = n pi to chi = (n + 1/2)pi for integer n. We point out that these novel phenomena have no analogs in graphene and suggest experiments which can probe them.

The article describes the synthesis, structure and magnetic investigations of a series of metal-organic framework compounds formed with Mn+2 and Ni+2 ions. The structures, determined using the single crystal X-ray diffraction, indicated that the structures possess two- and three-dimensional structures with magnetically active dimers, tetramers, chains, two-dimensional layers connected by polycarboxylic acids. These compounds provide good examples for the investigations of magnetic behaviour. Magnetic studies have been carried out using SQUID magnetometer in the range of 2-300 K and the behaviour indicates a predominant anti-ferromagnetic interactions, which appears to differ based on the M-O-C-O-M and/or the M-O-M (M = metal ions) linkages. Thus, compounds with carboxylate (Mn-O-C-O-Mn) connected ones, [C3N2H [Mn(H2O)''C6H3(COO)(3)''], I, [''Mn(H2O (3)''aEuroeC(12)H(8)O(COO)(2)'']center dot H2O, II, [''Mn(H2O)''aEuroeC(12)H(8)O(COO)(2)''], III, show simple anti-ferromagnetic behaviour. The compounds with Mn-O/OH-Mn connected dimer and tetramer units in [NaMn''C6H3(COO)(3)''], IV, [Mn-2(A mu(3)-OH) (H2O)(2)''C6H3(COO)(3)'']center dot 2H(2)O, V, show canted-antiferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic behaviour, respectively. The presence of infinite one-dimensional -Ni-OH-Ni- chains in the compound, [Ni-2(H2O)(A mu(3)-OH)(2)(C8H5NO4], VI, gives rise to ferromagnet-like behaviour at low temperatures. The compounds, [Mn-3''C6H3(COO)(3)''(2)], VII and [''Mn(OH)''(2)''C12H8O(COO)(2)''], VIII, have two-dimensional infinite -Mn-O/OH-Mn- layers with triangular magnetic lattices, which resemble the Kagome and brucite-like layer. The magnetic studies indicated canted-antiferromagnetic behaviour in both the cases. Variable temperature EPR and theoretical magnetic modelling studies have been carried out on selected compounds to probe the nature of the magnetic species and their interactions with them.

Anion directed, template syntheses of two dinuclear copper(II) complexes of mono-condensed Schiff base ligand Hdipn (4-[(3-aminopentylimino)-methyl]-benzene-1,3-diol) involving 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopentane were realized in the presence of bridging azide and acetate anions. Both complexes, [Cu-2(dipn)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) and [Cu-2(dip(n))(2)(OAc)(2)] (2) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The two mononuclear units are joined together by basal-apical, double end-on azido bridges in complex 1 and by basal-apical, double mono-atomic acetate oxygen-bridges in 2. Both complexes form rectangular grid-like supramolecular structures via H-bonds connecting the azide or acetate anion and the p-hydroxy group of 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complex 1 has antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -2.10 cm (1)) through the azide bridge while 2 has intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling through the acetate bridge and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic coupling through H-bonds (J = 2.85 cm (1), J' = -1.08 cm (1)). Dielectric measurements on the charge-ordered insulators, Y1-xCaxMnO3 (x = 0.4. 0.45 and 0.5), show maxima in the dielectric constant around the charge ordering transition temperature while magnetic measurements show the presence of weak ferromagnetic interactions at low temperatures. Besides the magnetic field dependence of the dielectric constant, these manganites also exhibit second harmonic generation. Thus, the charge-ordered Y1-xCaxMnO3 compositions are multiferroic and magnetoelectric, in accordance with theoretical predictions. Magnetoelectric properties are retained in small particles of Y0.5Ca0.5MnO3. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Powder x-ray diffraction study of Mn2NiGa ferromagnetic shape memory alloy shows the existence of a 7M monoclinic modulated structure at room temperature (RT). The structure of Mn2NiGa is found to be highly dependent on residual stress. For higher stress, the structure is tetragonal at RT, and for intermediate stress it is 7M monoclinic. However, only when the stress is considerably relaxed, the structure is cubic, as is expected at RT since the martensitic transition temperature is 230 K.

In1-xMnxSb films have been grown with different Mn doping concentrations (x = 0.0085, 0.018, 0.029 and 0.04) beyond the equilibrium 14 solubility limit by liquid phase epitaxy. We have studied temperature dependent resistivity, the Hall effect, magnetoresistance and magnetization for all compositions. Saturation in magnetization observed even at room temperature suggests the existence of ferromagnetic clusters in the film which has been verified by scanning electron microscopy studies. The anomalous Hall coefficient is found to be negative. Remnant field present on the surface of the clusters seems to affect the anomalous Hall effect at very low fields (below 350 Gauss). In the zero field resistivity, a variable-range hopping conduction mechanism dominates below 3.5 K for all samples above which activated behavior is predominant. The temperature dependence of the magnetization measurement shows a magnetic ordering below 10 K which is consistent with electrical measurements. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The local Fe ferromagnetic (FM) moment at the grain boundaries of a ceramic sample of Ca2FeReO6 double perovskite was investigated by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Fe L-2,L-3 edges and compared to the overall bulk magnetization. We found that, at the grain boundaries, the Fe FM moments at H=5 T are much smaller than expected and that the MxH curve is harder than in the bulk magnetization. These results suggest a larger degree of Fe/Re antisite disorder at the grain boundaries of this sample, shedding light into the intriguing nonmetallic resistivity behavior despite the reported presence of free carriers. We show from conventional magnetization measurements that the charge order (CO) is completely suppressed in 10 nm Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (PCMO 10) nanoparticles. Novel magnetization measurements, designed by a special high field measurement protocol, show that the dominant ground state magnetic phase is ferromagnetic-metallic (FM-M), which is an equilibrium phase, which coexists with the residual charge ordered anti-ferromagnetic phase (CO AFM) (an arrested phase) and exhibits the characteristic features of a `magnetic glassy state' at low temperatures. It is observed that there is a drastic reduction in the field required to induce the AFM to FM transition (similar to 5-6 T) compared to their bulk counterpart(similar to 27 T); this phase transition is of first order in nature, broad, irreversible and the coexisting phases are tunable with the cooling field. Temperature-dependent magneto-transport data indicate the occurrence of a size-induced insulator-metal transition (TM-I) and anomalous resistive hysteresis (R-H) loops, pointing out the presence of a mixture of the FM-M phase and AFM-I phase.

We have studied magneto-transport and optical properties of Ga1-xMnxSb crystals (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04) grown by horizontal Bridgman method. Negative magnetoresistance and anomalous Hall effect have been observed below 10K. Temperature dependence of magnetization measurement shows a magnetic ordering below 10K which could arise from Ga1-xMnxSb alloy formation. Also, saturation in magnetization observed even at room temperature suggests the existence of ferromagnetic MnSb clusters. Reduction in band gap is observed with increasing Mn concentration in the crystals. Temperature dependence of band gap follows Bose-Einstein's model.

We generalize the mean-field theory for the spinless Bose-Hubbard model to account for the different types of superfluid phases that can arise in the spin-1 case. In particular, our mean-field theory can distinguish polar and ferromagnetic superfluids, Mott insulator, that arise at integer fillings at zero temperature, and normal Bose liquids into which the Mott insulators evolve at finite temperatures. We find, in contrast to the spinless case, that several of the superfluid-Mott insulator transitions are of first order at finite temperatures. Our systematic study yields rich phase diagrams that include first-order and second-order transitions and a variety of tricritical points. We discuss the possibility of realizing such phase diagrams in experimental systems.
