A series of binuclear Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes were synthesized by the template condensation of glyoxal, biacetyl or benzil bis-hydrazide, 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol and Co(11), Ni(II) or Cu(II) chloride in a 2:2:2 M ratio in ethanol. These 22-membered macrocyclic complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic, molar conductance, spectral, thermal and fluorescence studies. Elemental analyses suggest the complexes have a 2:1 stoichiometry of the type (M2LX2]center dot nH(2)O and Ni(2)LX(2)2H(2)O]center dot nH(2)O (where M = Co(II) and Cu(II); L = H2L1, H2L2 and H2L3; X = Cl; n = 2). From the spectroscopic and magnetic studies, it has been concluded that the Co(11) and Cu(11) complexes display a five coordinated square pyramidal geometry and the Ni(II) complexes have a six coordinated octahedral geometry. The Schiff bases and their metal complexes have also been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities by the MIC method. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report the formation of a primitive icosahedral quasicrystal with increased stability in Al Mn-Be alloys close to the compound Al15Mn13Be2, by melt spinning and injection casting. The crystal structure of this compound was unknown. We show that in as-cast as well as heat treated condition the intermetallic phase H1 has a hexagonal structure with lattice parameters a = 1.2295 run and c = 2.4634 nm. The space group is P6(3)/mmc In the injection-cast samples, the quasicrystal coexists with another closely related hexagonal phase H2 with a = 1.2295 nm and c = 1.2317 nm with a possible space group of P6/mmm. This phase exhibits specific orientation relationships with the icosahedral quasicrystal given by [0001](hex)//2f(QC) and [01 (1) over bar0](hex)//5f(QC) where 2f(QC) and 5f(QC) represent twofold and fivefold axes respectively. Electron diffraction patterns from both phases exhibit a close resemblance to the quasicrystalline phase. It is shown that the H1 phase is closely related to mu-Al4Mn with the same e parameter while the a parameter is reduced by tau. Following Kreiner and Franzen, it is postulated that both structures (H1 and H2) can be understood by a simple hexagonal packing of I13 clusters.

In this article, a single-phase, one-domain macroscopic model is developed for studying binary alloy solidification with moving equiaxed solid phase, along with the associated transport phenomena. In this model, issues such as thermosolutal convection, motion of solid phase relative to liquid and viscosity variations of the solid-liquid mixture with solid fraction in the mobile zone are taken into account. Using the model, the associated transport phenomena during solidification of Al-Cu alloys in a rectangular cavity are predicted. The results for temperature variation, segregation patterns, and eutectic fraction distribution are compared with data from in-house experiments. The model predictions compare well with the experimental results. To highlight the influence of solid phase movement on convection and final macrosegregation, the results of the current model are also compared with those obtained from the conventional solidification model with stationary solid phase. By including the independent movement of the solid phase into the fluid transport model, better predictions of macrosegregation, microstructure, and even shrinkage locations were obtained. Mechanical property prediction models based on microstructure will benefit from the improved accuracy of this model.

Electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy have been employed to differentiate among icosahedral, decagonal and crystalline particles that occur in as-cast and rapidly solidified Al-Mn-Cu alloys. The resemblance between decagonal quasicrystals and crystals in their electron diffraction patterns is striking. The crystalline structure is based on the orthorhombic ‘Al3Mn’ structure, but also a new monoclinic phase called ‘X’ has been discovered and described here. The present observations are also closely related to the orthorhombic structures in Al60Mn11Ni4. The occurrence of fine-scale twinning and fragmentation into domains explains the complex diffraction effects.

In submitted research; nanocrystalline powders having elements Ni0.5Cu0.25Zn0.25Fe2 xInxO4 with varied amounts of indium ( x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were grown-up by modified citrate to nitrate alchemy. The realism of single phase cubic spinel creation of the synthesized ferrite samples was studied by the DTA-TGA, XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, VSM and dielectric measurements. SEM was applied to inspect the morphological variations and EDX was used to determine the compositional mass ratios. The studies on the dielectric constant (epsilon'), dielectric loss (epsilon `'), loss tangent (tan delta), ac conductivity (sigma(ac)), resistive and reactive parts of the impedance analysis (Z' and Z `') at room temperature were also carried out. The saturation magnetizations (Ms) were determined using the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Ms. decreased with the increase In3+ doping content, as Fe3+ of 5(mu B) ions are replaced by In3+ of 5 mu(B) ions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Aluminum scandium binary alloys represent a promising precipitation-hardening alloy system. However, the hardness of the binary alloys decreases with the rapid coarsening of Al3Sc precipitate during high-temperature aging. In the current study, we report a new approach to compensate for the loss of mechanical properties by combining rapid solidification with very small ternary addition of transition metal Ni. This addition yields dispersion, and at a critical concentration improves the mechanical properties. We explore additions of a maximum of 0.06 at. pct of Nickel to a binary Al-0.14 at. pct Sc alloy, which yield nickel-rich dispersions. We report two kinds of biphasic dispersions containing AlNi2Sc/Al9Ni2 and alpha-Al/Al9Ni2 phase combinations. The maximum improvement in mechanical properties occurs with the addition of 0.045 at. pct Ni with a yield strength of 239 +/- A 7 MPa for an aging treatment at 583 K (310 A degrees C) for 15 hours. A strong influence of Ni content on the diffusion-controlled growth of the (Cu,Ni)(3)Sn and (Cu,Ni)(6)Sn-5 phases by coupling different Cu(Ni) alloys with Sn in the solid state is reported. The continuous increase in the thickness ratio of (Cu,Ni)(6)Sn-5 to (Cu,Ni)(3)Sn with the Ni content is explained by combined kinetic and thermodynamic arguments as follows: (i) The integrated interdiffusion coefficient does not change for the (Cu,Ni)(3)Sn phase up to 2.5 at.% Ni and decreases drastically for 5 at.% Ni. On the other hand, there is a continuous increase in the integrated interdiffusion coefficient for (Cu,Ni)(6)Sn-5 as a function of increasing Ni content. (ii) With the increase in Ni content, driving forces for the diffusion of components increase for both components in both phases but at different rates. However, the magnitude of these changes alone is not large enough to explain the high difference in the observed growth rate of the product phases because of Ni addition. (iv) Kirkendall marker experiments indicate that the Cu6Sn5 phase grows by diffusion of both Cu and Sn in the binary case. However, when Ni is added, the growth is by diffusion of Sn only. (v) Also, the observed grain refinement in the Cu6Sn5 phase with the addition of Ni suggests that the grain boundary diffusion of Sn may have an important role in the observed changes in the growth rate.

The subsurface deformation during dry sliding of Al-Si alloys is studied by fragmentation of silicon particles. The size of the fragmented particles does not vary with load. The depth of deformation is found to increase with increase in normal load. This experimental observation agrees with load-deformation depth characteristics obtained by a slip line field model.

We report the evolution of diffuse intensity during the low-temperature ageing of Al-Mn quasicrystals. This is taken as evidence of short-range order in the icosahedral phase prior to its decomposition. The implication of these diffuse intensities is discussed.

Controversy exists in the published literature as to the effect of silicon content and pressure on the dry sliding wear of Al---Si alloys. The present paper attempts to clarify the question by reporting a statistical analysis of data obtained from factorially designed experiments conducted on a pinon-disc machine in the pressure range 0.105–1.733 MPa and speed range 0.19–0.94 m s−1. Under these conditions it was found that, in the range 4–24 wt.% Si, wear of binary unmodified alloys does not significantly differ between the alloys. However, it is significantly less than that corresponding to an alloy containing no silicon. The effect of pressure on wear rate was found to be linear and monotonie and, over the narrow range of speeds used, the wear rate was found to be unaffected by speed. The coefficient of friction was found to be insensitive to variations in silicon content, pressure and speed.

K2Pb[Cu(NO2)6] and [N(CH3)4]2MX4 (M = Mn, Co, Cu or Zn and X = Cl or Br) undergo phase transitions which involve incommensurate phases. The transitions have been investigated by examining the changes in the NO2 and CH3 vibration bands in the i.r. spectra. Splitting and broadening of some of the bands across the incommensurate transitions are discussed in the context of geometrical restrictions in the incommensurate phases. The phase transitions have also been characterized using differential scanning calorimetry.

Ce(3d) and (4d) core level XPS spectra of CeX = Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) suggest that the mean valence of Ce was as well as 4f hybridization strength decrease systematically from Fe to Cu. This observation is in agreement with the results of Bremstrahlung Isochromat Spectroscopy (BIS), but in disagreement with LIII-edge data reported earlier.

The tie lines delineating ion-exchange equilibria between MCr2O4-MAl2O4 spinel solid solution, where M is either Mn or Co, and Cr2O3-Al2O3 solid solution with the corundum structure were determined at 1373 K by electron microprobe and E0AX point count analysis of the oxide phases equilibrated with metallic Co and Au-5% Mn. The component activities in the spinel solid solutions are derived from the tie lines and the thernodynamic data for Cr2O3-Al2O3 soiid solutions available hi the literature. The Gibbs free energies of mixing calculated from the experimental data are discussed in relation to the values derived from the cation distribution a.odel based on the site preference energies and assuming random mixing on both tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Positive deviations from ideality observed in this study suggest a miscibility gap for both series of spinel solid solutions at low temperatures in the absence of oxidation.
