In the present study, the effect of iodine concentration on the photovoltaic properties of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) based on TiO2 nanoparticles for three different ratios of lithium iodide (LiI) and iodine (I-2) has been investigated. The electron transport properties and interfacial recombination kinetics have been evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It is found that increasing the concentration of lithium iodide for all ratios of iodine and lithium iodide decreases the open-circuit voltage (V-oc) whereas short circuit current density (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF) shows improvement. The reduction in V-oc and increment in J(sc) is ascribed to the higher concentration of absorptive Li+ cations which shifts the conduction band edge of TiO2 positively. The increase in FF is due to the reduction in electron transport resistance (R-omega) of the cell. In addition for all the ratios of LiI/I-2 increasing the concentration of I-2 decreases the V-oc which is attributed to the increased recombination with tri-iodide ions (I-3(-)) as verified from the low recombination resistance (R-k) and electron lifetime (tau) values obtained by EIS analysis. The current study describes the evolution of microstructure and texture in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr-based 7010 aluminum alloy during different modes of hot cross-rolling. Processing of materials involves three different types of cross-rolling. The development of texture in the one-step cross-rolled specimen can be described by a typical beta-fiber having the maximum intensity near Copper (Cu) component. However, for the multi-step cross-rolled specimens, the as-rolled texture is mainly characterized by a strong rotated-Brass (Bs) component and a very weak rotated-cube component. Subsequent heat treatment leads to sharpening of the major texture component (i.e., rotated-Bs). Furthermore, the main texture components in all the specimens appear to be significantly rotated in a complex manner away from their ideal positions because of non-symmetric deformations in the two rolling directions. Detailed microstructural study indicates that dynamic recovery is the dominant restoration mechanism operating during the hot rolling. During subsequent heat treatment, static recovery dominates, while a combination of particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) and strain-induced grain boundary migration (SIBM) causes partial recrystallization of the grain structure. The aforementioned restoration mechanisms play an important role in the development of texture components. The textural development in the current study could be attributed to the combined effects of (a) cross-rolling and inter-pass annealing that reduce the intensity of Cu component after each successive pass, (b) recrystallization resistance of Bs-oriented grains, (c) stability of Bs texture under cross-rolling, and (d) Zener pinning by Al3Zr dispersoids.

Numerical modeling is used to explain the origin of the large ON/OFF ratios, ultralow leakage, and high ON-current densities exhibited by back-end-of-the-line-friendly access devices based on copper-containing mixed-ionic-electronic-conduction (MIEC) materials. Hall effect measurements confirm that the electronic current is hole dominated; a commercial semiconductor modeling tool is adapted to model MIEC. Motion of large populations of copper ions and vacancies leads to exponential increases in hole current, with a turn-ON voltage that depends on material bandgap. Device simulations match experimental observations as a function of temperature, electrode aspect ratio, thickness, and device diameter.

Copper oxide (CuO) is one of the most important transition metal oxides due to its unique properties. It is used in various technological applications such as high critical temperature, superconductors, gas sensors, in photoconductive applications and so on. Recently, it has been used as an antimicrobial agent against various pathogenic bacteria. In the present investigation, we studied the structural and antidermatophytic properties of CuO nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by a precipitation technique. Copper sulfate was used as a precursor and sodium hydroxide as a reducing agent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed flower-shaped CuO NPs and X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern showed the crystalline nature of CuO NPs. These NPs were evaluated against two prevalent species of dermatophytes, i.e. Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes by using the broth microdilution technique. Further, the NPs activity was also compared with synthetic sertaconazole. Although better antidermatophytic activity was exhibited with sertaconazole as compared to NPs, being synthetic, sertaconazole may not be preferred, as it shows different adverse effects. Trichophyton mentagrophytes is more susceptible to NPs than T. rubrum. A phylogenetic approach was applied for predicting differences in susceptibility of pathogens.

Bentonite is a preferred buffer and backfill material for deep geological disposal of high-level nuclear waste (HLW). Bentonite does not retain anions by virtue of its negatively charged basal surface. Imparting anion retention ability to bentonite is important to enable the expansive clay to retain long-lived I-129 (iodine-129; half-life = 16 million years) species that may escape from the HLW geological repository. Silver-kaolinite (AgK) material is prepared as an additive to improve the iodide retention capacity of bentonite. The AgK is prepared by heating kaolinite-silver nitrate mix at 400 degrees C to study the kaolinite influence on the transition metal ion when reacting at its dehydroxylation temperature. Thermo gravimetric-Evolved Gas Detection analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photo electron spectroscopy and electron probe micro analysis indicated that silver occurs as AgO/Ag2O surface coating on thermally reacting kaolinite with silver nitrate at 400 degrees C.

We have identified strong topoisomerase sites (STS) for Mycobacteruim smegmatis topoisomerase I in double-stranded DNA context using electrophoretic mobility shift assay of enzyme-DNA covalent complexes; Mg2+, an essential component for DNA relaxation activity of the enzyme, is not required for binding to DNA, The enzyme makes single-stranded nicks, with transient covalent interaction at the 5'-end of the broken DNA strand, a characteristic akin to prokaryotic topoisomerases. More importantly, the enzyme binds to duplex DNA having a preferred site with high affinity, a. property similar to the eukaryotic type I topoisomerases, The preferred cleavage site is mapped on a 65 bp duplex DNA and found to be CG/TCTT. Thus, the enzyme resembles other prokaryotic type I topoisomerases in mechanistics of the reaction, but is similar to eukaryotic enzymes in DNA recognition properties.

A strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was adapted to grow at higher concentrations of copper by single step culturing in the presence of 20 g/L (0.314 mol/L) cupric ions added to 9K medium. Exposure to copper results in change in the surface chemistry of the microorganism. The isoelectric point of the adapted strain (pI=4.7) was observed to be at a higher pH than that of the wild unadapted strain(pI=2.0). Compared to the wild strain, the copper adapted strain was found to be more hydrophobic and showed enhanced attachment efficiency to the pyrite mineral. The copper adsorption ability of the adapted strain was also found to be higher than that of the wild strain. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of adapted cells suggested that a proteinaceous new cell surface component is synthesized by the adapted strain. Treatment of adapted cells with proteinase-K, resulted in complete loss of tolerance to copper, reduction in copper adsorption and hydrophobicity of the adapted cells. These observations strongly suggest a role played by cell surface modifications of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in imparting the copper tolerance to the cells and bioleaching of sulphide minerals.

Three new (dialkylamino)pyridine (DAAP)-based ligand amphiphiles 3-5 have been synthesized. All of the compounds possess a metal ion binding subunit in the form of a 2,6-disubstituted DAAP moiety. In addition, at least one ortho-CH2OH substituent is present in all the ligands. Complex formation by these ligands with various metal ions were examined under micellar conditions, but only complexes with Cu(II) ions showed kinetically potent esterolytic capacities under micellar conditions. Complexes with Cu(II) were prepared in host comicellar cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) media at pH 7.6. Individual complexes were characterized by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. These metallomicelles speed the cleavage of the substrates p-nitrophenyl hexanoate or p-nitrophenyl diphenyl phosphate. To ascertain the nature of the active esterolytic species, the stoichiometries of the respective Cu(II) complexes were determined from the kinetic version of Job's plot. In all the instances, 2:1 complex ligand/Cu(II) ion are the most kinetically competent species. The apparent pK(a) values of the Cu(II)-coordinated hydroxyl groups of the ligands 3, 4, and 5, in the comicellar aggregate, are 7.8, 8.0, and 8.0, respectively, as estimated from the rate constant vs pH: profiles of the ester cleavage reactions. The nucleophilic metallomicellar reagents and the second-order "catalytic" rate constants toward esterolysis of the substrate p-nitrophenyl hexanoate (at 25 degrees C, pH 7.6) are 37.5 for 3, 11.4 for 4, and 13.8 for 5. All catalytic systems comprising the coaggregates of 3, 4, or 5 and CTABr demonstrate turnover behavior in the presence of excess substrate.

The hydrodynamic modes and the velocity autocorrelation functions for a dilute sheared inelastic fluid are analyzed using an expansion in the parameter epsilon=(1-e)(1/2), where e is the coefficient of restitution. It is shown that the hydrodynamic modes for a sheared inelastic fluid are very different from those for an elastic fluid in the long-wave limit, since energy is not a conserved variable when the wavelength of perturbations is larger than the ``conduction length.'' In an inelastic fluid under shear, there are three coupled modes, the mass and the momenta in the plane of shear, which have a decay rate proportional to k(2/3) in the limit k -> 0, if the wave vector has a component along the flow direction. When the wave vector is aligned along the gradient-vorticity plane, we find that the scaling of the growth rate is similar to that for an elastic fluid. The Fourier transforms of the velocity autocorrelation functions are calculated for a steady shear flow correct to leading order in an expansion in epsilon. The time dependence of the autocorrelation function in the long-time limit is obtained by estimating the integral of the Fourier transform over wave number space. It is found that the autocorrelation functions for the velocity in the flow and gradient directions decay proportional to t(-5/2) in two dimensions and t(-15/4) in three dimensions. In the vorticity direction, the decay of the autocorrelation function is proportional to t(-3) in two dimensions and t(-7/2) in three dimensions.

Studies on melt rheological properties of blends of low density polyethylene (LDPE) with selected grades of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), which differ widely in their melt flow indices, are reported, The data obtained in a capillary rheometer are presented to describe the effects of blend composition and shear rate on flow behavior index, melt viscosity, and melt elasticity. In general, blending of LLDPE I that has a low melt flow index (2 g/10 min) with LDPE results in a decrease of its melt viscosity, processing temperature, and the tendency of extrudate distortion, depending on blending ratio. A blending ratio around 20-30% LLDPE I seems optimum from the point of view of desirable improvement in processability behavior. On the other hand, blending of LLDPE II that has a high melt flow index (10 g/10 min) with LDPE offers a distinct advantage in increasing the pseudoplasticity of LDPE/LLDPE II blends.

X-ray absorpion near edge structure (xanes) of copper compounds with copper in 1+, 2+ and 3+ states has been studied. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (exafs) has been employed to determine bond distances and coordination numbers in several model copper compounds. Employing bothxanes andexafs, the structure of the copper complex formed by the micro-organismPseudomonas aeruginosa has been shown to be square-planar with the Cu-O distance close to that in cupric glucuronates and cupric acetylacetonate.exafs has been shown to be useful for studying metal-metal bonds in copper carboxylates.
