The modulational instability of a large-amplitude, linearly polarized electromagnetic wave propagating in an electron-positron plasma is considered, including the combined effect of relativistic mass variation of the plasma particles, harmonic generation, and the non-resonant, finite-frequency electrostatic density perturbations, all caused by the large-amplitude radiation field. The radiation from many strong sources, such as AGN and pulsars, has been observed to vary over a host of time-scales. It is possible that the extremely rapid variations in the non-thermal continuum of AGN, as well as in the non-thermal radio radiation from pulsars, can be accounted for by the modulational instabilities to which radiation may be subjected during its propagation out of the emission region.

Improved performance of plasma in raw engine exhaust treatment is reported. A new type of reactor referred to as of cross-flow dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was used, in which the gas flow is perpendicular to the corona electrode. In raw exhaust environment, the cross-flow (radial-flow) reactor exhibits a superior performance with regard to NOX removal when compared to that with axial flow of gas. Experiments were conducted at different flow rates ranging from 2 L/min to 25 L/min. The plasma assisted barrier discharge reactor has shown encouraging results in NOx removal at high flow rates.

This paper proposes a compact electric discharge plasma source for controlling NOX emission in diesel engine exhaust. An automobile ignition coil was used to generate the high voltage pulse using flyback topology. This design is aimed at retrofitting the existing catalytic converters with pulse assisted cleaning technique. In this paper we bring out a relative comparison of discharge plasma and plasma-adsorbent process at different gas flow rates. Activated alumina was used as adsorbent. The main emphasis is laid on the development of a compact pulse source from a DC supply for the removal of NOX from the filtered diesel engine exhaust.

Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON), the widely used solid electrolyte for thin film microbatteries, is not compatible with the ambient humid temperatures. The reasons for reduction in ionic conductivity of LiPON thin films from 2.8 x 10(-6) Scm(-1) to 9.9 x 10(-10) Scm(-1) when exposed to air are analyzed with the aid of AC impedance measurements, SEM, XPS and stylus profilometry. Initially, particulate-free film surfaces obtained soon after rf sputter deposition in N-2 ambient conditions becomes covered with microstructures, forming pores in the film when exposed to air. LiPON films are deposited on Ti coated silicon in addition to bare silicon, ruling out the possibility of stress-related rupturing from the LiPON/Si interface. The reduction of nitrogen, phosphorus, and increased presence of lithium, oxygen and carbon over the film surface lowers the ionic conductivity of LiPON films when exposed to air. One of the scientific challenges of growing InN quantum dots (QDs), using Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), is to understand the fundamental processes that control the morphology and distribution of QDs. A systematic manipulation of the morphology, optical emission, and structural properties of InN/Si (111) QDs is demonstrated by changing the growth kinetics parameters such as flux rate and growth time. Due to the large lattice mismatch, between InN and Si (similar to 8%), the dots formed from the Strannski-Krastanow (S-K) growth mode are dislocated. Despite the variations in strain (residual) and the shape, both the dot size and pair separation distribution show the scaling behavior. We observed that the distribution of dot sizes, for samples grown under varying conditions, follow the scaling function.

The paper presents the importance of the Nocturnal Boundary Layer in driving the diurnal variability of the atmospheric CO2 mixing ratio and the carbon isotope ratio at ground level from an urban station in India. Our observations are the first of their kind from this region. The atmospheric CO2 mixing ratio and the carbon isotopic ratio were measured for both the morning (05:30-07:30 IST) and afternoon time (16:00-18:00 IST) air samples at 5 m above ground level in Bangalore city, Karnataka State (12 degrees 58' N, 77 degrees 38' E, masl = 920 m) for a 10 day period during the winter of 2008. We observed a change of similar to 7% the in CO2 mixing ratio between the morning and afternoon time air samples. A stable isotope analysis of CO2 from morning samples showed a depletion in the carbon isotope ratio by similar to 2 parts per thousand compared to the afternoon samples. Along with the ground-based measurement of air samples, data of radiosonde measurements were also obtained from the Indian Meteorological Department to identify the vertical atmospheric structure at different time in a day. We proposed the presence or absence of the NBL as a controlling factor for the observed variability in the mixing ratio as well as its isotopic composition. Here we used the Keeling model approach to find out the carbon isotope ratio for the local sources. The local sources have further been characterized as anthropogenic and biological respiration (in %) using a two-component mixing model. We also used a vertical mixing model based on the concept of the mixing of isotopically depleted (carbon isotope) ``polluted air'' (PA) with isotopically enriched ``free atmospheric air'' (FA) above. Using this modeling approach, the contribution of FA at ground level is being estimated for both the morning and afternoon time air samples.

Plasma-sprayable powders of calcia, magnesia and yttria-stabilized zirconia have been prepared by using polyvinyl alcohol binders. The powders have been characterized for sprayability by spray coating on steer plates previously coated with an NiAl bond coat. The suitability of these coatings for thermal barrier applications have been examined. Thermal barrier and related properties, along with phase stability and mechanical properties, have been found to be good. Failure of the thermal barrier coating has been observed to occur at the interface between the bond coat and the substrate, due to the formation of a pile-up layer consisting of Fe-Zr-Al-O compound.

Photoluminescence (PL) of high quality GaN epitaxial layer grown on beta-Si3N4/Si (1 1 1) substrate using nitridation-annealing-nitridation method by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PA-MBE) was investigated in the range of 5-300 K. Crystallinity of GaN epilayers was evaluated by high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) and surface morphology by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM). The temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra showed an anomalous behaviour with an `S-like' shape of free exciton (FX) emission peaks. Distant shallow donor-acceptor pair (DAP) line peak at approximately 3.285 eV was also observed at 5 K, followed by LO replica sidebands separated by 91 meV. The activation energy of the free exciton for GaN epilayers was also evaluated to be similar to 27.8 +/- 0.7 meV from the temperature-dependent PL studies. Low carrier concentrations were observed similar to 4.5 +/- 2 x 10(17) Cm-3 by measurements and it indicates the silicon nitride layer, which not only acts as a growth buffer layer, but also effectively prevents Si diffusion from the substrate to GaN epilayers. The absence of yellow band emission at around 2.2 eV signifies the high quality of film. The tensile stress in GaN film calculated by the thermal stress model agrees very well with that derived from Raman spectroscopy. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In contrast to earlier observations on various solitary wave propagations, especially those bifurcated by the compressive and rarefactive solitary waves, the existence of spiky and explosive solitary waves is here believed to arise because of the presence of free and trapped electrons. So far, very few studies have been carried out to satisfactorily explain the presence of the solitary waves in space as observed by satellites. It is also attempted to highlight the probable impact on the various solitary wave propagations in a generalized multi-component, inhomogeneous plasma upon consideration of a relativistic treatment. It is expected that such a treatment will prove the existence of the solitary waves most expeditiously and exhibit the presence of chaos therein, thus giving a suitable explanation to the observations of various forms of spiky and explosive solitary waves in space-plasma. Using steady state and transient capacitance measurements, the electrical characteristics of a defect layer on the surface of bulk GaSb created during the hydrogen plasma treatment is presented. The trap density, activation energies, and the thickness of the defect layer have been calculated. The trap densities are comparable in magnitude to the carrier concentration. The defects introduce multiple energy levels in the band gap. Typical defect layer thicknesses range from a few angstroms to a fraction of a micron. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

The effect of malathion on jugular plasma concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4) and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) on conception in dairy cattle during a cloprostenol (prostaglandin F2-alpha analogue, PG)-induced estrus was studied. Malathion (1 mg/kg, intraruminally) given at the onset of estrus (48 h after PG) did not alter the plasma FSH or E2 concentrations but significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited plasma P4 concentration. The mean P4 concentration in the malathion-treated group on days 8 and 12 were 0.8 +/- 0.4 and 1.0 +/- 0.5 ng/ml, as compared to 2.6 +/- 0.0 and 2.4 +/- 0.3 ng/ml in the control group. There was a nonsignificant (P > 0.05) inhibition of plasma AchE activity in malathion-treated cattle. Conception was 16.6% in malathion-treated cows and 50% in controls. Inhibition of progesterone secretion and poor conception occurred after the single intraruminal dose of malathion at the onset of estrus.

The authors present the simulation of the tropical Pacific surface wind variability by a low-resolution (R15 horizontal resolution and 18 vertical levels) version of the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Interactions, Maryland, general circulation model (GCM) when forced by observed global sea surface temperature. The authors have examined the monthly mean surface winds acid precipitation simulated by the model that was integrated from January 1979 to March 1992. Analyses of the climatological annual cycle and interannual variability over the Pacific are presented. The annual means of the simulated zonal and meridional winds agree well with observations. The only appreciable difference is in the region of strong trade winds where the simulated zonal winds are about 15%-20% weaker than observed, The amplitude of the annual harmonics are weaker than observed over the intertropical convergence zone and the South Pacific convergence zone regions. The amplitudes of the interannual variation of the simulated zonal and meridional winds are close to those of the observed variation. The first few dominant empirical orthogonal functions (EOF) of the simulated, as well as the observed, monthly mean winds are found to contain a targe amount of high-frequency intraseasonal variations, While the statistical properties of the high-frequency modes, such as their amplitude and geographical locations, agree with observations, their detailed time evolution does not. When the data are subjected to a 5-month running-mean filter, the first two dominant EOFs of the simulated winds representing the low-frequency EI Nino-Southern Oscillation fluctuations compare quite well with observations. However, the location of the center of the westerly anomalies associated with the warm episodes is simulated about 15 degrees west of the observed locations. The model simulates well the progress of the westerly anomalies toward the eastern Pacific during the evolution of a warm event. The simulated equatorial wind anomalies are comparable in magnitude to the observed anomalies. An intercomparison of the simulation of the interannual variability by a few other GCMs with comparable resolution is also presented. The success in simulation of the large-scale low-frequency part of the tropical surface winds by the atmospheric GCM seems to be related to the model's ability to simulate the large-scale low-frequency part of the precipitation. Good correspondence between the simulated precipitation and the highly reflective cloud anomalies is seen in the first two EOFs of the 5-month running means. Moreover, the strong correlation found between the simulated precipitation and the simulated winds in the first two principal components indicates the primary role of model precipitation in driving the surface winds. The surface winds simulated by a linear model forced by the GCM-simulated precipitation show good resemblance to the GCM-simulated winds in the equatorial region. This result supports the recent findings that the large-scale part of the tropical surface winds is primarily linear.

We report the structural and optical properties of a-plane GaN film grown on r-plane sapphire substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. High resolution X-ray diffraction was used to determine the out-of-plane and in-plane epitaxial relation of a-plane GaN to r-plane sapphire. Low-temperature photoluminescence emission was found to be dominated by basal stacking faults along with near-band emission. Raman spectroscopy shows that the a-GaN film is of reasonably good quality and compressively strained. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this study an atmospheric glow discharge with a fluorocarbon gas as precursor was used to modify the surface of polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS -(CH3)(2)SiO](n)-). The variation in protein immobilizing capability of PDMS was studied for different times of exposure. It was observed that the concentration of proteins adsorbed on the surface varied in an irregular manner with treatment time. The fluorination results in the formation of a thin film of fluorocarbon on the PDMS surface. The AFM and XPS data suggest that the film cracks due to stress and regains its uniformity thereafter. This Stranski-Krastanov growth model of the film was due to the high growth rate offered by atmospheric glow discharge. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

A cascaded system of electrical discharges (non-thermal plasma) and adsorption process was investigated for the removal of oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and total hydrocarbons (THC) from an actual diesel engine exhaust. The non-thermal plasma and adsorption processes were separately studied first and then the cascaded process was studied. In this study, different types of adsorbents were used. The NOx removal efficiency was higher with plasma-associated adsorption (cascaded) process compared to the individual processes and the removal efficiency was found almost invariant in time. When associated by plasma, among the adsorbents studied, activated charcoal and MS-13X were more effective for NOx and THC removal respectively. The experiments were conducted at no load and at 50% load conditions. The plasma reactor was kept at room temperature throughout the experiment, while the temperature of the adsorbent reactor was varied. A relative comparison of adsorbents was discussed at the end.
