Phase relations in the systems SrO-Y2O3-CuO-O2 and CaO-Y2O3-CuO-O2 at 1173 K were established by equilibrating different compositions in flowing oxygen gas at a pressure of 1.01 × 105 Pa. The quenched samples were examined by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), and electron spin resonance (ESR). In the system SrO-Y2O3-CuO-O2, except for the limited substitution of Y3+ for Sr2+ ions in the ternary oxide Sr14Cu24O41, no new quaternary phase was found to be stable. The compositions corresponding to the solid solution Sr14−xYxCu24O41 and the compound SrCuO2+δ lie above the plane containing SrO, Y2O3, and CuO,displaced towards the oxygen apex. However, in the system CaO-Y203-CuO-O2 at 1173 K, all the condensed phases lie on the plane containing CaO, Y203, and CuO, and a new quaternary oxide YCa2Cu306.s is present. The quaternary phase has a composition that lies at the center of the nonstoichiometric field of the analogous phase YBa2Cu307_~ in the BaO-Y203-CuO-O2 system. The compound YCa2Cu306.s has the tetragonal structure and does not become superconducting at low temperature. Surprisingly, phase relations in the three systems CaO-Y203-CuO-O2, SrO-Y203-CuO-O2, and BaO-Y203-CuO-O2 are found to be quite different.

The synthesis of cobalt-doped ZnO nanowires is achieved using a simple, metal salt decomposition growth technique. A sequence of drop casting on a quartz substrate held at 100 degrees C and annealing results in the growth of nanowires of average (modal) length similar to 200 nm and diameter of 15 +/- 4 nm and consequently an aspect ratio of similar to 13. A variation in the synthesis process, where the solution of mixed salts is deposited on the substrate at 25 degrees C, yields a grainy film structure which constitutes a useful comparator case. X-ray diffraction shows a preferred 0001] growth direction for the nanowires while a small unit cell volume contraction for Co-doped samples and data from Raman spectroscopy indicate incorporation of the Co dopant into the lattice; neither technique shows explicit evidence of cobalt oxides. Also the nanowire samples display excellent optical transmission across the entire visible range, as well as strong photoluminescence (exciton emission) in the near UV, centered at 3.25 eV. We report the synthesis and application Cu3BiS3 nanorods in infrared photodectection. Cu3BiS3 nano rods were characterized structurally, optically and electrically. The detailed IR photodectection properties in terms of photo response were demonstrated with IA lamp and 1064 nm laser illuminations. The rapid photocurrent time constants followed by the slower components, resulting due to the defect states. The photo detecting properties for different concentrations of nanorods blended with the conjugate polymer devices were demonstrated. Further the photocurrent was enhanced to threefold increase from 3.47 x 10(-7) A to 2.37 x 10(-3) A at 1 V for 10 mg nanorods embedded in the polymer device. Responsivity of hybrid device was enhanced from 0.0158 NW to 102 NW. The detailed trap assisted space charge transport properties were studied considering the different regimes. Hence Cu3BiS3 can be a promising candidate in the nano switchable near IA photodetectors.

5,6-Bis(benzylideneamino)-2-mercaptopyrimidin-4-ol (SCR7) is a new anti cancer molecule having capability to selectively inhibit non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), one of the DNA double strand break (DSB) repair pathways inside the cells. In spite of the promising potential as an anticancer agent, hydrophobicity of SCR7 decreases its bioavailability. Herein the entrapment of SCR7 in Pluronic copolymer is reported. The size of the aggregates was determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) which yields an average diameter of 23 nm. SCR7 encapsulated micelles (ES) were also characterized by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Evaluation of its biological properties by using a variety of techniques, including Trypan blue, MTT and Live-dead cell assays, reveal that encapsulated SCR7 can induce cytotoxicity in cancer cell lines, being more effective in breast cancer cell line. Encapsulated SCR7 treatment resulted in accumulation of DNA breaks within the cells, resulting in cell cycle arrest at G1 phase and activation of apoptosis. More importantly, we found approximate to 5 fold increase in cell death, when encapsulated SCR7 was used in comparison with SCR7 alone.
