Transparent glasses of various compositions in the system (100 -x)(Li2B4O7)-x(Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30) (5 <= x <= 20, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as-quenched samples was established by differential thermal analyses (DTA). X-ray powder diffraction studies confirmed the as-quenched glasses to be amorphous and the heat-treated to be nanocrystalline. Controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses at 500 degrees C for 8 h yielded nanocrystallites embedded in the glass matrix. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) of these samples established the size of the crystallites to be in the nano-range and confirmed the phase to be that of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 (BLTN) which was, initially, identified by X-ray powder diffraction. The frequency, temperature and compositional dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the glasses and glass nanocrystal composites were investigated in the 100 Hz to 10 MHz frequency range. Electrical relaxations were analyzed using the electric modulus formalisms. The imaginary part of electric modulus spectra was modeled using an approximate solution of Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts relation. The frequency dependent electrical conductivity was rationalized using Jonscher's power law. The activation energy associated with the dc conductivity was ascribed to the motion of Li+ ions in the glass matrix. The activation energy associated with dielectric relaxation was almost equal to that of the dc conductivity, indicating that the same species took part in both the processes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The stress-optic coefficient (n3/2)(q11-q12) has been determined for a series of 18 optical glasses of different compositions in the wavelength range 5700-3200 Å. The coefficients are negative for all the glasses except for a high-lead-content glass of density 6·7 and refractive index 1·89. The numerical value of the coefficient decreases as one proceeds to the ultraviolet. This behaviour is just the opposite of what is observed in fused silica. By applying Mueller's theory, the strain polarizability constant and its dispersion have been evaluated.

Optically clear glasses of various compositions in the system (100-x)Li2B4O7 center dot x(Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30) (5 <= x <= 20, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. Controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses at 500 degrees C for 8 h yielded nanocrystallites embedded in the glass matrix. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) of these samples established the composition of the nano-crystallites to be that of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30. B-11 NMR studies revealed the transformation of BO4 structural units into BO3 units owing to the increase in TiO6 and NbO6 structural units as the composition of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 increased in the glass. This, in turn, resulted in an increase in the density of the glasses. The influence of the nominal composition of the glasses and glass nanocrystal composites on optical band gap (E-opt), Urbach energy (Delta E), refractive index (n), molar refraction (R-m), optical polarizability (alpha(m)) and third order non-linear optical susceptibility (chi(3)) were studied.

Stiffness, strength, and toughness are the three primary attributes of a material, in terms of its mechanical properties. Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are known to exhibit elastic moduli at a fraction lower than crystalline alloys and have extraordinary strength. However, the reported values of fracture toughness of BMGs are highly variable; some BMGs such as the Zr-based ones have toughness values that are comparable to some high strength steels and titanium alloys, whereas there are also BMGs that are almost as brittle as silicate glasses. Invariably, monolithic BMGs exhibit no or low crack growth resistance and tend to become brittle upon structural relaxation. Despite its critical importance for the use of BMGs as structural materials, the fracture toughness of BMGs is relatively poorly understood. In this paper, we review the available literature to summarize the current understanding of the mechanics and micromechanisms of BMG toughness and highlight the needs for future research in this important area.

Glasses, prepared from the melts of Bi2(Ca, Sr)n+1 CunO2n+4 (n=1,2 and 3) have been characterized by various techniques. These glasses exhibit relatively high dielectric constants, high electrical conductivity, a ferroelectric-like dielectric hysteresis loop and pyroelectric effect at 300K. They also show weak microwave absorption at 77K.

A number of AgI based fast ion conducting glasses, with a general formula AgI---Ag2O---MxOy (MxOy=MoO3, SeO3, WO3, V2O5, P2O5, GeO2, B2O3, As2O3, CrO3) have been studied. A chemical approach is made to investigate the origin of fast ion conduction in these glasses. An index known as Image tructural Image npinning Image umber, SUN (S), has been defined for the purpose, based on the unscreened nuclear charge of silver ions and the equilibrium lectronegativities of the halide-oxyanion matrix in these glasses. The variation of the glass transition temperature, Tg, conductivity, σ, and the energy of activation, Ea, with the concentration of AgI are discussed in the light of the structural unpinning number. Conductivities increase uniformly in any given glass series as a smooth function of S and level off at very high values. The entire range of conductivity appears to vary as ln Image , where ln σ0 corresponds roughly to the conductivity of the hypothetical AgI glass and “a” is a constant which could be obtained as the slope in the graph of ln Ea versus S. It is suggested that the increase in the concentration of AgI beyond 75–80 mole% in the glass is not advantageous from the conductivity point of view.

Photoacoustic (PA) technique is used to study glass transition and temperature dependence of thermal diffusivity in AsxTe1-x glasses with 0.25 0.60. PA amplitude goes through a minimum and the phase shows a maximum at glass transition temperature Tg. The variation of thermal diffusivity with temperature shows sharp decrease near Tg. The variation of thermal diffusivity with composition shows maximum at = 0.40 for all temperatures T Tg.

Ultrasonic velocities at 10 MHz have been measured in two series of lithium, sodium, and potassium phosphomolybdate glasses with two fixed P2O5 concentrations. Elastic moduli, Poisson's ratio, and Debye temperature have been calculated. The composition dependence of most of the properties of lithium glasses exhibits a trend opposite to that of potassium glasses. Properties of sodium glasses lie between the other two alkali systems. Alkali oxide modification is suggested to be accompanied by ring reformation in lithium and sodium glasses. Ring size effects have been shown to account for all of the composition dependence.

This article presents the optical absorption and emission properties of Pr3+ and Nd3+ doped two different mixed alkali chloroborate glass matrices of the type 70B(2)O(3)center dot xLiCl center dot(30 - x)NaCl and 70B(2)O(3)center dot xLiCl center dot(30 - x)KCl (x = 5, 10, 15.20 and 25). The variation of Judd-Ofelt parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4) and Omega(6)), total radiative transition probabilities (A(T)), radiative lifetimes (tau(R)) and emission cross-sections (sigma(p)) with the variation of alkali contents in the glass matrix have been discussed in detail. The changes in the peak wavelengths of the hypersensitive transition and intensity parameters with x are correlated to the structural changes in the host matrix. The estimated radiative lifetimes of certain excited states of Pr3+ and Nd3+ in these two glass matrices are reported. Peak stimulated emission cross-sections (sigma(p)) are reported for the observed emission transitions of Pr3+ and Nd3+ ions. Branching ratios (beta) of the observed emission transitions obtained from the Judd-Ofelt theory are compared with the values obtained from the emission spectra. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Silver iodide-based fast ion conducting glasses containing silver phosphate and silver borate have been studied. An attempt is made to identify the interaction between anions by studying the chemical shifts of31P and11B atoms in high resolution (HR) magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra. Variation in the chemical shifts of31P or11B has been observed which is attributed to the change in the partial charge on the31P or11B. This is indicative of the change in the electronegativity of the anion matrix as a whole. This in turn is interpreted as due to significant interaction among anions. The significance of such interaction to the concept of structural unpinning of silver ions in fast ion conducting glasses is discussed.

Elastic properties of potassium and lead phosphotungstate glasses have been investigated using ultrasonic velocity measurements. The composition dependence of elastic moduli in WO3-K2O-P2O5 glasses suggests that at low alkali oxide concentrations the atomic ring size increases by network modification, which results in the decrease of elastic moduli. In the highly modified regime, due to the presence of coulombic interaction, the rate of decrease of elastic moduli is reduced. In the WO3-PbO-P2O5 glasses the behaviour of elastic moduli suggests that PbO behaves both as a network former and network modifier. The incorporation of PbO into the network is quantitatively determined by the concentration of P2O5 in the system. The results are consistent with the structural model proposed earlier, based on characterization studies.

Glasses obtained from quenching melts of superconducting bismuth cuprates of the formula Bi2(Ca,Sr)n+1CunO2n+4 with n=1 and 3 exhibit novel dielectric properties. They possess relatively high dielectric constants as well as high electrical conductivity. The novel dielectric properties of these cuprate glasses are likely to be of electronic origin. They exhibit a weak microwave absorption due to the presence of microcrystallites.

Alternating differential scanning calorimetry (ADSC) studies were undertaken to investigate the effect of Tl addition on the thermal properties of As30Te70-xTlx ( 6 <= x <= 22 at%) glasses. These include parameters such as glass-transition temperature (T-g), changes in specific heat capacity (Delta C-p) and relaxation enthalpy (Delta H-NR) at the glass transition. It was found that T-g of the glasses decreased with the addition of Tl, which is in contrast to the dependence of T-g in As - Te glasses on the addition of Al and In. The change in heat capacity Delta C-p through the glass transition was also found to decrease with increasing Tl content. The addition of Tl to the As - Te matrix may lead to a breaking of As - Te chains and the formation of Tl+Te- AsTe2/2 dipoles. There was no significant dependence of the change of relaxation enthalpy, through the glass transition, with composition.

Bulk As-Te-Tl glasses belonging to the As30Te70-xTlx (4 <= x <= 22) and As40Te60-xTlx (5 <= x <= 20) composition tie lines are studied for their I-V characteristics. Unlike other As-Te-III glasses such as As-Te-Al and As-Te-In, which exhibit threshold behavior, the present samples show memory switching. The composition dependence of switching voltages (V-t) of As-Te-Tl glasses is also different from that of As-Te-Al and As-Te-In glasses, and it is found that V-t decreases with the addition of Tl. Both the type of switching exhibited by As-Te-Tl glasses and the composition dependence of V-t, seems to be intimately connected with the nature of bonding of Tl atoms and the resultant structural network. Furthermore, the temperature and thickness dependence of switching voltages of As-Te-Tl glasses suggest an electro thermal mechanism for switching in these samples.
