3,6-Dibromo-N-ethylcarbazole (DBNEC) and its polymeric analogue poly-3,6-dibromovinylcarbazole (PDBVCz) were studied by transient absorption spectroscopy. The transient absorption spectrum of the 3,6-dibromo-N-ethylcarbazole radical cation and decay rate constants of radical cations of 3,6-dibromo-N-ethylcarbazole and its polymeric analogue are presented. In the case of unsubstituted carbazole, the ratio of the yield of radical cation of monomer to polymer is 2.0, whereas in the case of PDBVCz, under the same experimental conditions, the yield of the radical cation is an order of magnitude less in comparison with the monomer model compound DBNEC. This drastic difference in yield has been correlated to the difference in the conformational structure of the polymer as evidenced by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. p-Benzoquinone and its halogen substituted derivatives are known to have differing reactivities in the triplet excited state. While bromanil catalyzes the reduction of octaethylporphyrin most efficiently among the halogenated p-benzoquinones, the reaction does not take place in presence of the unsubstituted p-benzoquinone (T. Nakano and Y. Mori, Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn., 67, 2627 (1994)). Understanding of such differences requires a detailed knowledge of the triplet state structures, normal mode compositions and excited state dynamics. In this paper, we apply a recently presented scheme (M. Puranik, S. Umapathy, J. G. Snijders, and J. Chandrasekhar, J. Chem, Phys., 115, 6106 (2001)) that combines parameters from experiment and computation in a wave packet dynamics simulation to the triplet states of p-benzoquinone and bromanil. The absorption and resonance Raman spectra of both the molecules have been simulated. The normal mode compositions and mode specific excited state displacements have been presented and compared. Time-dependent evolution of the absorption and Raman overlaps for all the observed modes has been discussed in detail. In p-benzoquinone, the initial dynamics is along the C=C stretching and C-H bending modes whereas in bromanil nearly equal displacements are observed along all the stretching coordinates.

Near-wall structures in turbulent natural convection at Rayleigh numbers of $10^{10}$ to $10^{11}$ at A Schmidt number of 602 are visualized by a new method of driving the convection across a fine membrane using concentration differences of sodium chloride. The visualizations show the near-wall flow to consist of sheet plumes. A wide variety of large-scale flow cells, scaling with the cross-section dimension, are observed. Multiple large-scale flow cells are seen at aspect ratio (AR)= 0.65, while only a single circulation cell is detected at AR= 0.435. The cells (or the mean wind) are driven by plumes coming together to form columns of rising lighter fluid. The wind in turn aligns the sheet plumes along the direction of shear. the mean wind direction is seen to change with time. The near-wall dynamics show plumes initiated at points, which elongate to form sheets and then merge. Increase in rayleigh number results in a larger number of closely and regularly spaced plumes. The plume spacings show a common log–normal probability distribution function, independent of the rayleigh number and the aspect ratio. We propose that the near-wall structure is made of laminar natural-convection boundary layers, which become unstable to give rise to sheet plumes, and show that the predictions of a model constructed on this hypothesis match the experiments. Based on these findings, we conclude that in the presence of a mean wind, the local near-wall boundary layers associated with each sheet plume in high-rayleigh-number turbulent natural convection are likely to be laminar mixed convection type.

This paper examines the role of microstructure and matric suction in the collapse behavior of a compacted clay soil from Bangalore District in Karnataka State, India. The microstructure of the compacted specimens was examined by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and the ASTM Filter Paper Method was used to determine their matric suction. The microstructure and matric suction of the compacted specimens were changed by varying their compaction water content, dry density, and clay content (< 2 mum fraction). Experimental results showed that relative abundance of coarse (60 to 6 mum) pores was mainly affected by increasing the dry density of the specimens from 1.49 to 1.77 g/cm(3). The relative abundance of coarse and fine (0.01 to 0.002 mum) pores was affected by increasing the compaction water content from 10.6 to 26.4%. Variations in dry density, compaction water content, and clay contents notably affected the matric suction of the compacted specimens. The collapse behavior of the compacted specimens is explained from analysis of the MIP and matric suction results.

Electroluminescent zinc sulfide doped with copper and chloride (ZnS:Cu, Cl) powder was heated to 400°C and rapidly quenched to room temperature. Comparison between the quenched and non-quenched phosphors using synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) (λ = 0.828692 Å) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was made. XRPD shows that the expected highly faulted structure is observed with excellent resolution out to 150° 2θ (or to (12 2 2) of the sphalerite phase). The quenched sample compared to the unheated sample shows a large change in peak ratios between 46.7° and 46.9°, which is thought to correspond to the wurtzite (0 0 6), (0 3 2) and sphalerite (3 3 3)/(5 1 1) peaks. Hence, a large proportion of this sphalerite diffraction is lost from the material upon rapid quenching, but not when the material is allowed to cool slowly. The Zn K-edge XAS data indicate that the crystalline structures are indistinguishable using this technique, but do give an indication that the electronic structure has altered due to changing intensity of the white line. It is noted that the blue electroluminescence (EL) emission bands are lost upon quenching: however, a large amount of total EL emission intensity is also removed, which is consistent with our findings. We report the XRPD of a working alternating-current electroluminescence device in the synchrotron X-ray beam, which exhibits a new diffraction pattern when the device is powered in an AC field even though the phosphor is fixed in the binder. Significantly, only a few crystals are required to yield the diffraction data because of the high flux X-ray source. These in panel data show multiple sharp diffraction lines spread out under the region, where capillary data show broad diffraction intensity indicating that the phosphor powder is comprised of unique crystals, each having different structures.

A wide variety of novel compounds obtained by combining two types of known organogelators, viz., bile acid alkyl amides and pyrene alkanoic acids, were synthesized and screened for their gelation ability. The 3 alpha esters of 1-pyrene butyric acid (PBA) of alkylamides of deoxycholic acid (DCA) turned out to be effective in the gel formation with many organic solvents although the gelation has to be triggered by the addition of a charge transfer (CT) agent 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF). The special feature of these molecules is that the organogelation is achieved only after derivatizing the acid moiety of the 1-pyrenealkanoic acids. Additionally, the gelation properties can be fine-tuned by inserting different functional groups at the bile acid side chain. The gels obtained are deep red in colour and optically transparent up to 2% w/v. The SEM studies of the obtained xerogels revealed bundled rod-like morphology without specialized branching.

The direct infrared (IR) absorption spectrum of benzene dimer formed in a free-jet expansion was recorded in the 3.3 mu m region for the first time. This has led to the observation of the C H stretching fundamental mode nu(13) (B(1u)), which is both IR and Raman forbidden in the monomer. Moreover, the IR forbidden and Raman allowed nu(7) (E(2g)) mode has been observed as well. These two modes were found to be red-shifted along with the IR allowed nu(20) (E(1u)) mode, as previously reported by Erlekam et al. [Erlekam; Frankowski; Meijer; Gert von Helden J. Chem. Phys. 2006, 124, 171101], using ion-dip spectroscopy, contrary to the blue-shift predicted earlier by theoretical studies. The observation of the nu(13) band indicates that the symmetry is reduced in the dimer, confirming the T-shaped structure observed by Erlekam et al. Our experimental results have not provided any direct evidence for the presence of the parallel displaced geometry, the main objective of the present work, as predicted by theoretical calculations.

Substrate temperature and ion bombardment during deposition have been observed to modify significantly the optical and structural properties of dielectric thin films. Single‐layer films of CeO2 have been deposited by electron beam evaporation with simultaneous oxygen‐ion bombardment using a Kaufman broad beam ion source and maintaining the substrates at elevated temperature. A systematic study has been made on the influence of (a) substrate temperature in the range ambient to 300 °C, (b) ion energy in the range 300–700 eV, and (c) ion current density 100–220 μA/cm2 on optical properties such as refractive index, extinction coefficient, inhomogeneity, packing density, and structural properties. The refractive index increased with in increase in substrate temperature: ion energy up to 600 eV and ion current density. Homogeneous, absorption free and high index (2.48) films have been obtained at 600 eV, 220 μA/cm2 and at substrate temperature of 300 °C. The packing density of the films was observed to be unity for the same deposition conditions. Substrate temperature with simultaneous ion bombardment modified the structure of the films from highly ordered to fine grain structure.

New complexes, [Ni(HL)(PPh3)]Cl (1), [Pd(L)(PPh3)](2), and [Pd(L)(AsPh3)](3), were synthesized from the reactions of 4-chloro-5-methyl-salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone [H2L] with [NiCl2(PPh3)(2)], [PdCl2(PPh3)(2)] and [PdCl2(AsPh3)(2)]. They were characterized by IR, electronic, H-1-NMR spectral data. Further, the structures of the complexes have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. While the thiosemicarbazone coordinated as binegative tridentate (ONS) in complexes 2 and 3, it is coordinated as mono negative tridentate (ONS) in 1. The interactions of the new complexes with calf thymus DNA was examined by absorption and emission spectra, and viscosity measurements. Moreover, the antioxidant properties of the new complexes have also been tested against DPPH radical in which complex 1 exhibited better activity than that of the other two complexes 2 and 3. The in vitro cytotoxicity of complexes 1-3 against A549 and HepG2 cell lines was assayed, and the new complexes exhibited higher cytotoxic activity with lower IC50 values indicating their efficiency in killing the cancer cells even at very low concentrations.

The W, V, Ce, Zr, Fe, and Cu metal ion substituted nanocrystalline anatase TiO2 was prepared by solution combustion method and characterized by XRD, Raman, BET, EPR, XPS, IR TGA, UV absorption, and photoluminescence measurements. The structural studies indicate that the solid solution formation was limited to a narrow range of concentrations of the dopant ions. The photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV and solar exposure was investigated with Ti1-xMxO2±δ. The degradation rates of 4-nitrophenol with these catalysts were lesser than the degradation rates of 4-nitrophenol with undoped TiO2 both with UV exposure and solar radiation. However, the photocatalytic activities of most metal ion doped TiO2 are higher than the activity of the commercial TiO2, Degussa P25. The decrease in photocatalytic activity is correlated with decrease in photoluminescence due to electron states of metal ions within the band gap of TiO2.

We show that it is possible to change from a subnatural electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) feature to a subnatural electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) feature in a (degenerate) three-level. system. The change is effected by turning on a second control beam counter-propagating with respect to the first beam. We observe this change in the D-2 line of Rb in a room temperature vapor cell. The observations are supported by density-matrix analysis of the complete sublevel structure including the effect of Doppler averaging, but can be understood qualitatively as arising due to the formation of N-type systems with the two control beams. Since many of the applications of EIT and EIA rely on the anomalous dispersion near the resonances, this introduces a new ability to control the sign of the dispersion. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2012

The Fourier transform Raman and infrared (IR) spectra of the Ceramide 3 (CER3) have been recorded in the regions 200-3500 cm(-1) and 680-4000 cm(-1), respectively. We have calculated the equilibrium geometry, harmonic vibrational wavenumbers, electrostatic potential surfaces, absolute Raman scattering activities and IR absorption intensities by the density functional theory with B3LYP functionals having extended basis set 6-311G. This work is undertaken to study the vibrational spectra of CER3 completely and to identify the various normal modes with better wavenumber accuracy. Good consistency is found between the calculated results and experimental data for the IR and Raman spectra.

The synthesis, molecular structure, DNA binding and nuclease activity of Cu4O4 open-cubane tetranuclear copper(II) complex with 3-2-(ethyl amino)ethyl]imino]-2-butanoneoxime (HL) are reported for the first time. The neutral tetranuclear Cu4L4(ClO4)(4)] complex crystallizes in tetragonal space group P (4) over bar2(1)c with the unit cell parameters; a = 13.798(4) angstrom, b = 13.798(4) angstrom, c = 14.119(6) angstrom, V = 2688(16) angstrom(3), Z = 8, R = 0.0636. Symmetrically equivalent copper atoms exhibit a CuN3O3 elongated distorted octahedral coordination environment, with three nitrogen atoms of the L ligand and one oxime-oxygen atom of second L ligand at equatorial positions, one oxime-oxygen atom of the third L ligand and perchlorate oxygen at axial positions. The complex shows quasireversible cyclic voltammetric response at 0.805 V (Delta E-p = 277 mV) at 100 mV s (1) in DMF for the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple. The binding study of the complex with calf-thymus DNA has been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. The complex shows strong nuclease activity on stranded pBR 322 plasmid DNA in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and marginal nuclease activity in the presence of reducing agent (dithiothreitol). The complex shows quasi-reversible cyclic voltammetric response at 0.844V (Delta E-p = 276 mV) at 100 mVs(-1). The binding studies of the complex with calf thymus DNA has been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. Cleavage activity of the complex has been carried out on double stranded pBR 322 plasmid DNA by using gel electrophoresis experiments in the absence and in the presence of the oxidant, viz., H2O2.

We describe the synthesis, crystal structures, and optical absorption spectra of transition metal substituted spiroffite derivatives, Zn2-xMxTe3O8 (M-II = Co, Ni, Cu; 0 < x <= 1.0). The oxides are readily synthesized by solid state reaction of stoichiometric mixtures of the constituent binaries at 620 degrees C. Reitveld refinement of the crystal structures from powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data shows that the Zn/MO6 octahedra are strongly distorted, as in the parent Zn2Te3O8 structure, consisting of five relatively short Zn/M-II-O bonds (1.898-2.236 angstrom) and one longer Zn/M-II-O bond (2.356-2.519 angstrom). We have interpreted the unique colors and the optical absorption/diffuse reflectance spectra of Zn2-xMxTe3O8 in the visible, in terms of the observed/irregular coordination geometry of the Zn/M-II-O chromophores. We could not however prepare the fully substituted M2Te3O8 (M-II = Co, Ni, Cu) by the direct solid state reaction method. Density Functional Theory (DFT) modeling of the electronic structure of both the parent and the transition metal substituted derivatives provides new insights into the bonding and the role of transition metals toward the origin of color in these materials. We believe that transition metal substituted spiroffites Zn2-xMxTe3O8 reported here suggest new directions for the development of colored inorganic materials/pigments featuring irregular/distorted oxygen coordination polyhedra around transition metal ions.
