To a reasonable approximation, a secondary structures of RNA is determined by Watson-Crick pairing without pseudo-knots in such a way as to minimise the number of unpaired bases: We show that this minimal number is determined by the maximal conjugacy-invariant pseudo-norm on the free group on two generators subject to bounds on the generators. This allows us to construct lower bounds on the minimal number of unpaired bases by constructing conjugacy invariant pseudo-norms. We show that one such construction, based on isometric actions on metric spaces, gives a sharp lower bound. A major goal here is to formulate a purely mathematical question, based on considering orthogonal representations, which we believe is of some interest independent of its biological roots.

The role of homogeneity in ex situ grown conductive coatings and dimensionality in the lithium storage properties of TiO(2) is discussed here. TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet comprising of mixed crystallographic phases of anatase and TiO(2) (B) have been synthesized by an optimized hydrothermal method. Surface modifications of TiO(2) nanotube are realized via coating the nanotube with Ag nanoparticles and amorphous carbon. The first discharge cycle capacity (at current rate = 10 mA g(-1)) for TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet were 355 mAh g(-1) and 225 mAhg(-1), respectively. The conductive surface coating stabilized the titania crystallographic structure during lithium insertion-deinsertion processes via reduction in the accessibility of lithium ions to the trapping sites. The irreversible capacity is beneficially minimized from 110 mAh g(-1) for TiO(2) nanotubes to 96 mAh g(-1) and 57 mAhg(-1) respectively for Ag and carbon modified TiO(2) nanotubes. The homogeneously coated amorphous carbon over TiO(2) renders better lithium battery performance than randomly distributed Ag nanoparticles coated TiO(2) due to efficient hopping of electrons. Base metal substituted Sn(0.95)M(0.05)O(2-delta) (M = Cu, Fe, Mn, Co) catalysts were synthesized by the solution combustion method and characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM and BET surface area analysis. The catalytic activities of these materials were investigated by performing CO oxidation. The rates and the apparent activation energies of the reaction for CO oxidation were determined for each catalyst. All the substituted catalysts showed high rates and lower activation energies for the oxidation of CO as compared to unsubstituted SnO(2). The rate was found to be much higher over copper substituted SnO(2) as compared to other studied catalysts. 100% CO conversion was obtained below 225 degrees C over this catalyst. A bifunctional reaction mechanism was developed that accounts for CO adsorption on base metal and support ions and O(2) dissociation on the oxide ion vacancy. The kinetic parameters were determined by fitting the model to the experimental data. The high rates of the CO oxidation reactions at low temperatures were rationalized by the high dissociative chemisorption of adsorbed O(2) over these catalysts.

Species of opportunistic mycobacteria are the major causative agent for disseminating pulmonary infections in immuno-compromised individuals. These naturally resistant strains recruit a unique type of glycolipid known as glycopeptidolipids (GPLs), noncovalently attached to the outer surface of their thick lipid rich cell envelope. Species specific GPLs constitute the chemical determinants of most nontuberculous mycobacterial serotypes, and their absence from the cell surface confers altered colony morphology, hydrophobicity, and inability to grow as biofilms. The objective of this review is to present a comprehensive account and highlight the renewed interest on this much neglected group of pleiotropic molecules with respect to their structural diversity and biosynthesis. In addition, the role of GPLs in mycobacterial survival, both intracellular and in the environment is also discussed. It also explores the possibility of identifying new targets for intervening Mycobacterium avium complex-related infections. These antigenic molecules have been considered to play a pivotal role in immune suppression and can also induce various cytokine mediated innate immune responses, the molecular mechanism of which remains obscure. This article gives a brief review of microwave spectroscopy and the experimental techniques used for obtaining microwave spectrum of molecules and complexes since 1950s. It presents a brief summary of the pulsed nozzle Fourier transform microwave (PNFTMW) spectrometer, fabricated in our laboratory, and discusses some of the important results obtained using the spectrometer. The most significant among the results from this spectrometer is the direct structural determination of weakly bound complexes involving H2O/H2S. These have challenged the conventional wisdom on hydrogen bonding leading us to propose a modern definition for the same through IUPAC. The limitations of the PNFTMW spectrometer and the need for the new chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrometer are discussed as well. Moreover, preliminary results from our laboratory on generating a 1 A mu s chirped pulse of 1 GHz bandwidth are given.

Room temperature nanoindentation experiments, employing two different pyramidal (Berkovich and cube-corner) indenters, were performed on a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) to critically examine the possibility of indentation-induced nanocrystallization in BMGs. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy images obtained from high angle annular dark field ( HAADF) and high resolution (HR) modes clearly indicate to the occurrence of nanocrystallization. Pronounced nanocrystallite formation in the case of sharper cube-corner indenter suggests that the structural transformation is favored by the high strains introduced during nanoindentation. Refinement of the internal grain size leads to strengthening by retarding dislocation motion. There have also been recent reports that a reduction in external diameter enhances the strength of single crystal pillars. Here we show, in a hitherto unexplored domain, a synergistic increase in strength by a combined reduction in internal (0.5 mu m) and external (20-50 mu m) dimensions, with strengths at failure approaching the theoretical value. alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method. The structural, magnetic and luminescence properties were studied. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) pattern of alpha-Fe2O3 exhibits pure rhombohedral structure. SEM micrographs reveal the dumbbell shaped particles. The EPR spectrum shows an intense resonance signal at g approximate to 5.61 corresponding to isolated Fe3+ ions situated in axially distorted sites, whereas the g approximate to 2.30 is due to Fe3+ ions coupled by exchange interaction. Raman studies show A(1g) (225 cm(-1)) and E-g (293 and 409 cm(-1)) phonon modes. The absorption at 300 nm results from the ligand to metal charge transfer transitions whereas the 540 nm peak is mainly due to the (6)A(1) + (6)A(1) —> T-4(1)(4G) + T-4(1)(4G) excitation of an Fe3+-Fe3+ pair. A prominent TL glow peak was observed at 140 C at heating rate of 5 degrees C s(-1). The trapping parameters namely activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics (b) were evaluated and discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The RAD51 paralogs XRCC3 and RAD51C have been implicated in homologous recombination (HR) and DNA damage responses. However, the molecular mechanism(s) by which these paralogs regulate HR and DNA damage signaling remains obscure. Here, we show that an SQ motif serine 225 in XRCC3 is phosphorylated by ATR kinase in an ATM signaling pathway. We find that RAD51C but not XRCC2 is essential for XRCC3 phosphorylation, and this modification follows end resection and is specific to S and G(2) phases. XRCC3 phosphorylation is required for chromatin loading of RAD51 and HR-mediated repair of double-strand breaks (DSBs). Notably, in response to DSBs, XRCC3 participates in the intra-S-phase checkpoint following its phosphorylation and in the G(2)/M checkpoint independently of its phosphorylation. Strikingly, we find that XRCC3 distinctly regulates recovery of stalled and collapsed replication forks such that phosphorylation is required for the HR-mediated recovery of collapsed replication forks but is dispensable for the restart of stalled replication forks. Together, these findings suggest that XRCC3 is a new player in the ATM/ATR-induced DNA damage responses to control checkpoint and HR-mediated repair.

Using continuous and near-real time measurements of the mass concentrations of black carbon (BC) aerosols near the surface, for a period of 1 year (from January to December 2006) from a network of eight observatories spread over different environments of India, a space-time synthesis is generated. The strong seasonal variations observed, with a winter high and summer low, are attributed to the combined effects of changes in synoptic air mass types, modulated strongly by the atmospheric boundary layer dynamics. Spatial distribution shows much higher BC concentration over the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) than the peninsular Indian stations. These were examined against the simulations using two chemical transport models, GOCART (Goddard Global Ozone Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport) and CHIMERE for the first time over Indian region. Both the model simulations significantly deviated from the measurements at all the stations; more so during the winter and pre-monsoon seasons and over mega cities. However, the CHIMERE model simulations show better agreement compared with the measurements. Notwithstanding this, both the models captured the temporal variations; at seasonal and subseasonal timescales and the natural variabilities (intra-seasonal oscillations) fairly well, especially at the off-equatorial stations. It is hypothesized that an improvement in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) parameterization scheme for tropical environment might lead to better results with GOCART.

Chebyshev-inequality-based convex relaxations of Chance-Constrained Programs (CCPs) are shown to be useful for learning classifiers on massive datasets. In particular, an algorithm that integrates efficient clustering procedures and CCP approaches for computing classifiers on large datasets is proposed. The key idea is to identify high density regions or clusters from individual class conditional densities and then use a CCP formulation to learn a classifier on the clusters. The CCP formulation ensures that most of the data points in a cluster are correctly classified by employing a Chebyshev-inequality-based convex relaxation. This relaxation is heavily dependent on the second-order statistics. However, this formulation and in general such relaxations that depend on the second-order moments are susceptible to moment estimation errors. One of the contributions of the paper is to propose several formulations that are robust to such errors. In particular a generic way of making such formulations robust to moment estimation errors is illustrated using two novel confidence sets. An important contribution is to show that when either of the confidence sets is employed, for the special case of a spherical normal distribution of clusters, the robust variant of the formulation can be posed as a second-order cone program. Empirical results show that the robust formulations achieve accuracies comparable to that with true moments, even when moment estimates are erroneous. Results also illustrate the benefits of employing the proposed methodology for robust classification of large-scale datasets.

In this article, we obtain explicit solutions of a system of forced Burgers equation subject to some classes of bounded and compactly supported initial data and also subject to certain unbounded initial data. In a series of papers, Rao and Yadav (2010) 1-3] obtained explicit solutions of a nonhomogeneous Burgers equation in one dimension subject to certain classes of bounded and unbounded initial data. Earlier Kloosterziel (1990) 4] represented the solution of an initial value problem for the heat equation, with initial data in L-2 (R-n, e(vertical bar x vertical bar 2/2)), as a series of self-similar solutions of the heat equation in R-n. Here we express the solutions of certain classes of Cauchy problems for a system of forced Burgers equation in terms of self-similar solutions of some linear partial differential equations. A porous layered composite of Li2MnO3 and LiMn1/3Co1/3Ni1/3O2 (composition: Li1.2Mn0.53Ni0.13Co0.13O2) is prepared by reverse microemulsion method employing a soft polymer template and studied as a positive electrode material. The precursor is heated at several temperatures between 500 and 900 degrees C. The product samples possess mesoporosity with broadly distributed pores of about 30 nm diameters. There is a decrease in pore volume as well as in surface area by increasing the temperature of preparation. Nevertheless, the electrochemical activity of the composite increases with an increase in temperature. The discharge capacity values of the samples prepared at 800 and 900 degrees C are about 250 mAh g(-1) at a specific current of 40 mA g(-1) with an excellent cycling stability. A value of 225 mAh g(-1) is obtained at the end of 30 charge-discharge cycles. Both these composite samples possess high rate capability, but the 800 degrees C sample is marginally superior to the 900 degrees C sample. A discharge capacity of 100 mAh g(-1) is obtained at a specific current of 1000 mA g(-1). The high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the composite samples.
