A low strain shear modulus plays a fundamental role in the estimation of site response parameters In this study an attempt has been made to develop the relationships between standard penetration test (SPT) N values with the low strain shear modulus (G(max)) For this purpose, field experiments SPT and multichannel analysis of surface wave data from 38 locations in Bangalore, India, have been used, which were also used for seismic microzonation project The in situ density of soil layer was evaluated using undisturbed soil samples from the boreholes Shear wave velocity (V-s) profiles with depth were obtained for the same locations or close to the boreholes The values for low strain shear modulus have been calculated using measured V-s and soil density About 215 pairs of SPT N and G(max) values are used for regression analysis The differences between fitted regression relations using measured and corrected values were analyzed It is found that an uncorrected value of N and modulus gives the best fit with a high regression coefficient when compared to corrected N and corrected modulus values This study shows better correlation between measured values of N and G(max) when compared to overburden stress corrected values of N and G(max)

This review gives a brief description of the historical development followed by the origin and the principle of operation of strain gauges. The features of an ideal strain gauge for measurement purposes and the general classes of strain gauges are given. The remaning part is devoted to an important development in strain gauge technology, namely thin film strain gauges. After highlighting the advantages of thin film strain gauges, a review of current data is given. Detailed description of metallic thin film strain gauges is provided and avaliable information on alloy semiconductor and cermet films for their possible use as strain gauge elements has also been included. The importance of ion implantation in tailoring the properties of strain gauges is highlighted. 33 ref.--AA

We present a study of the piezoresistivity in nanostructured. polycrystalline films of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 and La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 grown on oxidized Si (100) substrates. We have observed that the hole doped rare-earth manganites, which are well known for being colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) show change in its resistance under uniaxial strain even at room temperature. The piezoresistance was measured at room temperature by bending the Si cantilevers (on which the film is grown) in flexural mode both with compressive and tensile strain. The resistance of the film increases with tensile strain and decreases with compressive strain. A large gauge factor of 15-20 is seen in these films at room temperature.

In this letter we characterize strain in Si1-xGex based heterojunction bipolar transistors and modulation doped field effect transistors grown by rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition exploiting the phenomenon of strain-induced birefringence. The technique used is multiple angle of incidence ellipsometry at a wavelength of 670 nm to measure the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of the Si1-xGex films. We report measurements on thin fully strained films (with thicknesses less than the critical thickness) with Ge concentration varying from 9% to 40% with an accuracy of the order of 1 part in 10(4) and propose an empirical relation between the difference in the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices (deltan) and the Ge concentration (x) given by deltan(x)=0.18x-0.12x(2). An application of Artificial Neural Networks for predicting the stress-strain response of jointed rocks under different confining pressures is presented in this paper. Rocks of different compressive strength with different joint properties (frequency, orientation and strength of joints) are considered in this study. The database for training the neural network is formed from the results of triaxial compression tests on different intact and jointed rocks with different joint properties tested at different confining pressures reported by various researchers in the literature. The network was trained using a three-layered network with the feed-forward back propagation algorithm.About 85% of the data was used for training and the remaining 15% was used for testing the network. Results from the analyses demonstrated that the neural network approach is effective in capturing the stress-strain behaviour of intact rocks and the complex stress-strain behaviour of jointed rocks. A single neural network is demonstrated to be capable of predicting the stress-strain response of different jointed rocks, whose intact strength varies from 11.32 MPa to 123 MPa, spacing of joints varies from 10 cm to 100 cm. and confining pressures range from 0 to 13.8 MPa. Strain and temperature sensitivities of a type I Bragg grating inscribed in a germania doped silica fiber, fabricated under normal conditions and zero strain, are compared with that of a Bragg grating inscribed under pre-strained condition. The results obtained reveal that the strain and temperature sensitivities of the two gratings are different. Based on these results, we demonstrate a technique which enables discrimination of strain and temperature in a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) with a linear response. The present technique allows for an easy implementation of the sensor by providing a direct access to the grating region in the fiber and demands only a simple interrogation system.

A slip line field is proposed for symmetrical single‐cavity closed‐die forging by rough dies. A compatible velocity field is shown to exist. Experiments were conducted using lead workpiece and rough dies. Experimentally observed flow and load were used to validate the proposed slip line field. The slip line field was used to simulate the process in the computer with the objective of studying the influence of flash geometry on cavity filling.

Fifteen stable mouse spleen cell myeloma hybrids (hybridomas) producing monoclonal antibodies to rinderpest virus proteins were produced. The specificity of these monoclonal antibodies was established by radioimmunoprecipitation followed by polyacrylamide gel analysis and immunofluorescence. Nine antibodies were specific for the surface glycoprotein H. All the nine clones showed inhibition of haemagglutination by measles virus. The antibodies from two clones (A7D2 and B2F6) neutralise infectious virus. Six clones produce antibodies reacting with the nucleocapsid protein N. Three antigenic sites designated I–III, with sites I and II partially overlapping, were topographically mapped on the H molecule by competitive binding assay. Similarly, two antigenic sites I and II were delineated on the N protein. The monoclonal antibodies were used to study the antigenic relationships of H and N proteins of rinderpest virus, measles virus and canine distemper virus.

The coat protein of belladonna mottle virus (a tymovirus) was cleaved by trypsin and chymotrypsin, and the peptides were separated by high performance liquid chromatography using a combination of gel permeation, reverse phase, and ion pair chromatography. The peptides were sequenced manually using the 4-N, N-dimethylaminoazobenzene-4'-isothiocyanate/phenyl isothiocyanate double-coupling method. The chymotryptic peptides were aligned by overlapping sequences of tryptic peptides and by homology with another tymovirus, eggplant mosaic virus. The belladonna mottle virus is more closely related to eggplant mosaic virus than to turnip yellow mosaic virus, the type member of this group, as evident from the sequence homologies of 57 and 32%, respectively. The accumulation of basic residues at the amino terminus implicated in RNA-protein interactions in many spherical plant viruses was absent in all the three sequences. Interestingly, the amino-terminal region is the least conserved among the tymoviruses. The longest stretch of conserved sequence between belladonna mottle virus and eggplant mosaic virus was residues 34-44, whereas it was residues 96-102 in the case of belladonna mottle virus and turnip yellow mosaic virus. A tetrapeptide in the region (residues 154-157) was found to be common for all the three sequences. It is possible that these conserved regions (residues 34-44, 96-102, 154-157) are involved in either intersubunit or RNA-protein interactions.

Pulicat Lake sediments are often severely polluted with the toxic heavy metal mercury. Several mercury-resistant strains of Bacillus species were isolated from the sediments and all the isolates exhibited broad spectrum resistance (resistance to both organic and inorganic mercuric compounds). Plasmid curing assay showed that all the isolated Bacillus strains carry chromosomally borne mercury resistance. Polymerase chain reaction and southern hybridization analyses using merA and merB3 gene primers/probes showed that five of the isolated Bacillus strains carry sequences similar to known merA and merB3 genes. Results of multiple sequence alignment revealed 99% similarity with merA and merB3 of TnMERI1 (class II transposons). Other mercury resistant Bacillus species lacking homology to these genes were not able to volatilize mercuric chloride, indicating the presence of other modes of resistance to mercuric compounds.

Foot-and-mouth disease is an acute and highly contagious febrile disease affecting cloven-footed animals. Identification of the foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), the causative agent of the disease, posed problems because of the occurrence of many types and subtypes of the virus. A molecular approach based on oligonucleotide mapping of FMDV RNA has been used for the identification and characterization of virus isolates obtained in a disease outbreak (King et al., 1981). One-dimensional oligonucleotide mapping was used for rapid analysis of FMDV RNA (LaTorre et al., 1982). FMDV types Ο and Asia 1 of Indian origin are being routinely used for vaccine production in India. This report presents the differences between FMDV types Ο and Asia 1 at molecular level based on one-dimensional oligonucleotide mapping of virus-induced poly (A) RNA.

Immunoliposomes were prepared using the antibody raised against the avian myeloblastosis virus envelope glycoprotein, gp80. Adriamycin was encapsulated into immunoliposomes. More drug was delivered into target cells when the drug encapsulated in immunoliposomes was incubated with the cells. The drug encapsulated in immunoliposomes was able to inhibit the RNA synthesis twice more than free drug in the virus-transformed myeloblasts. Pre-treatment of cells with ammonium chloride, reversed the effect of drug encapsulated in immunoliposomes. The drugs encapsulated in immunoliposomes had marginal effect on the RNA synthesis of non-target cells, the yolk sac cells. Colony formation by virus-transformed cells and focus formation by virus-infected yolk sac cells was inhibited significantly by the drug encapsulated in immunoliposomes.
