Photoluminescence (PL), electroluminescence (EL) and photoconductivity (PC) of poly[(2,5-dimethoxy-p-phenylene) vinylene] (DMPPV) of varying conjugation length were studied. Thin film devices of the DMPPV with different conjugation lengths, as the active medium, were prepared. The PL emission spectra revealed the radiative decay of the singlet excitons with peak values corresponding to energies below the absorption onset. The PL. emission spectra of the copolymer films also revealed vibronic features, which get well resolved upon cooling to 80K, The devices exhibit light emitting diode (LED) behavior; the I-V curves and EL spectra are compared in these DMPPV samples having different conjugation lengths. The PC studies reveal subtle features, which can be attributed to the optically generated excitations in the system.

In this paper we propose that the compressive tidal held in the centers of flat-core early-type galaxies and ultraluminous galaxies compresses molecular clouds producing dense gas observed in the centers of these galaxies. The effect of galactic tidal fields is usually considered disruptive in the literature. However, for some galaxies, the mass profile flattens toward the center and the resulting galactic tidal field is not disruptive, but instead it is compressive within the flat-core region. We have used the virial theorem to determine the minimum density of a molecular cloud to be stable and gravitationally bound within the tidally compressive region of a galaxy. We have applied the mechanism to determine the mean molecular cloud densities in the centers of a sample of flat-core, early-type galaxies and ultraluminous galaxies. For early-type galaxies with a core-type luminosity profile, the tidal held of the galaxy is compressive within half the core radius. We have calculated the mean gas densities for molecular gas in a sample of early-type galaxies which have already been detected in CO emission, and we obtain mean densities of [n] similar to 10(3)-10(6) cm(-3) within the central 100 pc radius. We also use our model to calculate the molecular cloud densities in the inner few hundred parsecs of a sample of ultraluminous galaxies. From the observed rotation curves of these galaxies we show that they have a compressive core within their nuclear region. Our model predicts minimum molecular gas densities in the range 10(2)-10(4) cm(-3) in the nuclear gas disks; the smaller values are applicable typically for galaxies with larger core radii. The resulting density values agree well with the observed range. Also, for large core radii, even fairly low-density gas (similar to 10(2) cm(-3)) can remain bound and stable close to the galactic center.

Several endogenous and exogenous chemical species, particularly the so-called reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen oxide species (RNOS), attack deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in biological systems producing DNA lesions which hamper normal cell functioning and cause various diseases including mutation and cancer. The guanine (G) base of DNA among all the bases is most susceptible and certain modified guanines get involved in mispairing with other bases during DNA replication. The biological system repairs the abnormal base pairs, but those that are still left cause mutation and cancer. Anti-oxidants present in biological systems can scavenge the ROS and RNOS. Thus three types of molecular events occur in biological media: (i) DNA damage, (ii) DNA repair, and (iii) prevention of DNA damage by scavenging ROS and RNOS. Quantum mechanical methods may be used to unravel molecular mechanisms of such phenomena. Some recent quantum theoretical results obtained on these problems are reviewed here.

The formation of molecular films of 2,9,16,23-tetraamino metal phthalocyanines [TAM(II)Pc; M (II) = Co, Cu, and TAM(III)Pc; M = Fe] by spontaneous adsorption on gold and silver surfaces is described. The properties of these films have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, impedance, and FT-Raman spectroscopy. The charge associated with Co(II) and Co(I) redox couple in voltammetric data leads to a coverage of (0.35+/-0.05) x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), suggesting that the tetraamino cobalt phthalocyanine is adsorbed as a monolayer with an almost complete coverage. The blocking behavior of the films toward oxygen and Fe(CN)(6)(3-/4-) redox couple have been followed by cyclic voltammetry and impedance measurements. This leads to an estimate of the coverage of about 85 % in the case of copper and the iron analogs. FT-Raman studies show characteristic bands around 236 cm(-1) revealing the interaction between the metal substrate and the nitrogen of the -NH2 group on the phthalocyanine molecules.

LixCoOy films with x < 1 and y > 2 have been prepared by radio-frequency (rf) sputtering from high temperature (HT) LiCoO2 targets. Their structures have been examined with high resolution electron microscopy. Conductivities have been studied between 77 and 400 K. The electrochemical behaviour of film electrodes have been investigated with Li/LiClO4-PC/LixCoOy cells. The annealed films consist of nanocrystalline domains with amorphous boundaries. Electrical conductivities appear to arise from variable-range hopping (VRH) of holes. The films form good electrodes with operating potentials between 2.7 and 3.8 V. The observations have been discussed on the basis of a tentative and heuristic molecular orbital based energy band diagram. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

We have imaged the H92alpha and H75alpha radio recombination line (RRL) emissions from the starburst galaxy NGC 253 with a resolution of similar to4 pc. The peak of the RRL emission at both frequencies coincides with the unresolved radio nucleus. Both lines observed toward the nucleus are extremely wide, with FWHMs of similar to200 km s(-1). Modeling the RRL and radio continuum data for the radio nucleus shows that the lines arise in gas whose density is similar to10(4) cm(-3) and mass is a few thousand M., which requires an ionizing flux of (6-20) x 10(51) photons s(-1). We consider a supernova remnant (SNR) expanding in a dense medium, a star cluster, and also an active galactic nucleus (AGN) as potential ionizing sources. Based on dynamical arguments, we rule out an SNR as a viable ionizing source. A star cluster model is considered, and the dynamics of the ionized gas in a stellar-wind driven structure are investigated. Such a model is only consistent with the properties of the ionized gas for a cluster younger than similar to10(5) yr. The existence of such a young cluster at the nucleus seems improbable. The third model assumes the ionizing source to be an AGN at the nucleus. In this model, it is shown that the observed X-ray flux is too weak to account for the required ionizing photon flux. However, the ionization requirement can be explained if the accretion disk is assumed to have a big blue bump in its spectrum. Hence, we favor an AGN at the nucleus as the source responsible for ionizing the observed RRLs. A hybrid model consisting of an inner advection-dominated accretion flow disk and an outer thin disk is suggested, which could explain the radio, UV, and X-ray luminosities of the nucleus.

Noble metal such as Ag normally exists in an fcc crystal structure. However as the size of the material is decreased to nanometer lengthscales, a structural transformation from that of its bulk state can be expected with new atomic arrangements due to competition between internal packing and minimization of surface energy. In many previous studies, it has been shown that silver nanowires (AGNWs) grown inside anodic alumina (AAO) templates by ac or dc electrochemical deposition from silver salts or complexes, adopt fcc structure and below some critical diameter ∼ 20 nm they may acquire hcp structure at low temperature. This is, however, critically dependant on the nature of confinement, as AgNWs grown inside nanotube confinement with subnanometer diameter have been reported to have fcc structure. Hence the question of the crystal structure of metal nanowires under combined influence of confinement, temperature and deposition condition remains open. In this abstract we show that the alternative crystal structures of AGNWs at room temperature can be achieved with electrochemical growth processes under specific conditions determined by the deposition parameters and nature of confinement. We fabricated AgNWs of 4H hexagonal structure with diameters 30 – 80 nm inside polycarbonate (PC) templates with a modified dc electrodeposition technique, where the nanowires were grown at deposition potentials as low as 10 mV in 2 M silver nitrate solution[1]. We call this low-potential electrodeposition (LPED) since the electrodeposition process occurs at potential much less than the standard Nernst potential (770 mV) of silver. Two types of electrodes were used – stainless steel and sputtered thin Pt film, neither of which had any influence on the crystal structure of the nanowires. EDS elemental analysis showed the nanowires to consist only of silver. Although the precise atomic dynamics during the LPED process is unclear at present, we investigated this with HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) characterization of nanowires grown over various deposition times, as well as electrical conductivity measurements. These experiments indicate that nanowire growth does not occur through a three-dimensional diffusion controlled process, as proposed for conventional over-potential deposition, but follow a novel instantaneous linear growth mechanism. Further experiments showed that, (a) conventional electrochemical growth at a small over-potential in a 2 mM AgNO3 solution yields nanowires with expected fcc structure inside the same PC templates, and (2) no nanowire was observed under the LPED conditions inside hard AAO templates, indicating that LPED-growth process, and hcp structure of the corresponding nanowires depend on deposition parameters, as well as nature of confinement.

In data mining, an important goal is to generate an abstraction of the data. Such an abstraction helps in reducing the space and search time requirements of the overall decision making process. Further, it is important that the abstraction is generated from the data with a small number of disk scans. We propose a novel data structure, pattern count tree (PC-tree), that can be built by scanning the database only once. PC-tree is a minimal size complete representation of the data and it can be used to represent dynamic databases with the help of knowledge that is either static or changing. We show that further compactness can be achieved by constructing the PC-tree on segmented patterns. We exploit the flexibility offered by rough sets to realize a rough PC-tree and use it for efficient and effective rough classification. To be consistent with the sizes of the branches of the PC-tree, we use upper and lower approximations of feature sets in a manner different from the conventional rough set theory. We conducted experiments using the proposed classification scheme on a large-scale hand-written digit data set. We use the experimental results to establish the efficacy of the proposed approach. The impact of realistic representation of sea surface temperature (SST) on the numerical simulation of track and intensity of tropical cyclones formed over the north Indian Ocean is studied using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model. We have selected two intense tropical cyclones formed over the Bay of Bengal for studying the SST impact. Two different sets of SSTs were used in this study: one from TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) satellite and other is the weekly averaged Reynold's SST analysis from National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). WRF simulations were conducted using the Reynold's and TMI SST as model boundary condition for the two cyclone cases selected. The TMI SST which has a better temporal and spatial resolution showed sharper gradient when compared to the Reynold's SST. The use of TMI SST improved the WRF cyclone intensity prediction when compared to that using Reynold's SST for both the cases studied. The improvements in intensity were mainly due to the improved prediction of surface latent and sensible heat fluxes. The use of TMI SST in place of Reynold's SST improved cyclone track prediction for Orissa super cyclone but slightly degraded track prediction for cyclone Mala. The present modeling study supports the well established notion that the horizontal SST gradient is one of the major driving forces for the intensification and movement of tropical cyclones over the Indian Ocean.
