This paper reports a numerical study of the laminar conjugate natural convection heat transfer with and without the interaction of the surface radiation in a horizontal cylindrical annulus formed between an inner heat generating solid circular cylinder and an outer isothermal circular boundary. Numerical solutions are obtained by solving the governing equations with a pressure correction method on a collocated (non-staggered) mesh. Steady-state results are presented for the flow and temperature distributions and Nusselt numbers for the heat generation based Grashof number ranging from 10(7) to 10(10), solid-to-fluid thermal conductivity ratios of 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100, radius ratios of 0.226 and 0.452 and surface emissivities of 0-0.8 with air as the working medium. It is observed that surface radiation reduces the convective heat transfer in the annulus compared to the pure natural convection case and enhances the overall Nusselt number.

A vibration isolator is described which incorporates a near-zero-spring-rate device within its operating range. The device is an assembly of a vertical spring in parallel with two inclined springs. A low spring rate is achieved by combining the equivalent stiffness in the vertical direction of the inclined springs with the stiffness of the vertical central spring. It is shown that there is a relation between the geometry and the stiffness of the individual springs that results in a low spring rate. Computer simulation studies of a single-degree-of-freedom model for harmonic base input show that the performance of the proposed scheme is superior to that of the passive schemes with linear springs and skyhook damping configuration. The response curves show that, for small to large amplitudes of base disturbance, the system goes into resonance at low frequencies of excitation. Thus, it is possible to achieve very good isolation over a wide low-frequency band. Also, the damper force requirements for the proposed scheme are much lower than for the damper force of a skyhook configuration or a conventional linear spring with a semi-active damper.

3C resonances of carbonyl and methyl groups in amides are shifted down-field on interaction with alkali and alkaline earth metal salts. The magnitude of the shift depends on the ionic potential of the cation. Ions like Li+ bind to the amide carbonyl group both in neat amide solutions as well as in concentrated salt solutions in water.

The crucial role of oxide surface chemical composition on ion transport in "soggy sand" electrolytes is discussed in a systematic manner. A prototype soggy sand electrolytic system comprising aerosil silica functionalized with various hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties dispersed in lithium perchlorate-ethylene glycol solution was used for the study. Detailed rheology studies show that the attractive particle network in the case of the composite with unmodified aerosil silica (with surface silanol groups) is most favorable for percolation in ionic conductivity, as well as rendering the composite with beneficial elastic mechanical properties: Though weaker in strength compared to the composite with unmodified aerosil particles, attractive particle networks are also observed in composites of aerosil particles with surfaces partially substituted with hydrophobic groups. The percolation in ionic conductivity is, however, dependent on the size of the hydrophobic moiety. No spanning attractive particle network was formed for aerosil particles with surfaces modified with stronger hydrophilic groups (than silanol), and as a result, no percolation in ionic conductivity was observed. The composite with hydrophilic particles was a sol, contrary to gels obtained in the case of unmodified aerosil, and partially substituted with hydrophobic groups.

Confinement and Surface specific interactions call induce Structures otherwise unstable at that temperature and pressure. Here we Study the groove specific water dynamics ill the nucleic acid sequences, poly-AT and poly-GC, in long B-DNA duplex chains by large scale atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, accompanied by thermodynamic analysis. While water dynamics in the major groove remains insensitive to the sequence differences, exactly the opposite is true for the minor groove water. Much slower water dynamics observed in the minor grooves (especially in the AT minor) call be attributed to all enhanced tetrahedral ordering (< t(h)>) of water. The largest value of < t(h)> in the AT minor groove is related to the spine of hydration found in X-ray Structure. The calculated configurational entropy (S-C) of the water molecules is found to be correlated with the self-diffusion coefficient of water in different region via Adam-Gibbs relation D = A exp(-B/TSC), and also with < t(h)>.

The unsteady mixed convection flow of an incompressible laminar electrically conducting fluid over an impulsively stretched permeable vertical surface in an unbounded quiescent fluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field has been investigated. At the same time, the surface temperature is suddenly increased from the surrounding fluid temperature or a constant heat flux is suddenly imposed on the surface. The problem is formulated in such a way that for small time it is governed by Rayleigh type of equation and for large time by Crane type of equation. The non-linear coupled parabolic partial differential equations governing the unsteady mixed convection flow under boundary layer approximations have been solved analytically by using the homotopy analysis method as well as numerically by an implicit finite difference scheme. The local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are found to decrease rapidly with time in a small time interval and they tend to steady-state values for t* >= 5. They also increase with the buoyancy force and suction, but decrease with injection rate. The local skin friction coefficient increases with the magnetic field, but the local Nusselt number decreases. There is a smooth transition from the unsteady state to the steady state. This paper deals with the manifestations of conical intersections (CIs), unequivocal spectroscopic signatures of which are still elusive, in the resonance Raman intensities. In particular, the results of our calculations on the `two state-two vibrational mode' and the `two state-three vibrational mode' models are presented. The models comprise two excited states of different spatial symmetry, one bright and one dark, which are coupled by a nontotally symmetric mode while the energy gap between them is tuned by one/two totally symmetric modes. Time dependent theory for vibronically coupled states is employed for the calculation and analysis of Raman excitation profiles (REPs). The manifestation of intersections in REPs is studied by extensive modelm calculations and the results of two specific models are presented. Themfeasibility of using REPs to probe the role of CIs in polyatomic systems is ascertained by multimode calculations on two polyatomic systems viz., pyrazine and trans-azobenzene. The study also notes the importance of the pump excitation wavelength dependence in a femtosecond time-resolved experiment probing the intersection-induced nonadiabatic dynamics. Calreticulin is a lectin-like molecular chaperone of the endoplasmic reticulum in eukaryotes. Its interaction with N-glycosylated polypeptides is mediated by the glycan, Glc(1)Man(9)GlcNAc(2), present on the target glycoproteins. In this work, binding of monoglucosyl IgG (chicken) substrate to calreticulin has been studied using real time association kinetics of the interaction with the biosensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR). By SPR, accurate association and dissociation rate constants were determined, and these yielded a micromolar association constant. The nature of reaction was unaffected by immobilization of either of the reactants. The Scatchard analysis values for K-a agreed web crith the one obtained by the ratio k(1)/k(-1). The interaction was completely inhibited by free oligosaccharide, Glc(1)Man(9)GlcNAc(2), whereas Man(9)GlcNAc(2) did not bind to the calreticulin-substrate complex, attesting to the exquisite specificity of this interaction. The binding of calreticulin to IgG was used for the development of immunoassay and the relative affinity of the lectin-substrate association was indirectly measured. The values are in agreement with those obtained with SPR. Although the reactions are several orders of magnitude slower than the diffusion controlled processes, the data are qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with single-step bimolecular association and dissociation reaction. Analyses of the activation parameters indicate that reaction is enthalpically driven and does not involve a highly ordered transition state. Based on these data, the mechanism of its chaperone activity is briefly discussed.
The dynamics of solvation of an electron in the image potential state by a layer of polar adsorbates
Resumo:
Recently, ultrafast two-photon photoemission has been used to study electron solvation at a two-dimensional metal/polar adsorbate interfaces [A. Miller , Science 297, 1163 (2002)]. The electron is bound to the surface by the image interaction. Earlier we have suggested a theoretical description of the states of the electron interacting with a two-dimensional layer of the polar adsorbate [K. L. Sebastian , J. Chem. Phys. 119, 10350 (2003)]. In this paper we have analyzed the dynamics of electron solvation, assuming a trial wave function for the electron and the solvent polarization and then using the Dirac-Frenkel variational method to determine it. The electron is initially photoexcited to a delocalized state, which has a finite but large size, and causes the polar molecules to reorient. This reorientation acts back on the electron and causes its wave function to shrink, which will cause further reorientation of the polar molecules, and the process continues until the electron gets self-trapped. For reasonable values for the parameters, we are able to obtain fair agreement with the experimental observations. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

A three-dimensional exact solution for determining the thermal stresses in a finite hollow cylinder subject to a steady state axisymmetric temperature field over one of its end surfaces has been given. Numerical results for a hollow cylinder, having lenght to outer diameter ratio equal to one and inner to outer diameter ratio equal to 0.75, subjected to a symmetric temperature variation over the end surfaces of the cylinder have been given.

A three-dimensional rigorous solution for determining thermal stresses in a finite solid cylinder due to a steady state axisymmetric temperature field over one of its end surfaces is given. Numerical results for a solid cylinder having a length to diameter ratio equal to one and subjected to a symmetric temperature variation over half the radius of the cylinder at the end surfaces are included. These results have been compared with the results of the approximate solution given by W. Nowacki.

We control the stiffnesses of two dual double cantelevers placed in series to control penetration into a perflurooctyltrichlorosilane monolayer self assembled on aluminium and silicon substrates. The top cantilever which carries the probe is displaced with respect to the bottom cantilever which carries the substrate, the difference in displacement recorded using capacitors gives penetration. We further modulate the input displacement sinusoidally to deconvolute the viscoelastic properties of the monolayer. When the intervention is limited to the terminal end of the molecule there is a strong viscous response in consonance with the ability of the molecule to dissipate energy by the generation of gauche defects freely. When the intervention reaches the backbone, at a contact mean pressure of 0.2GPa the damping disappears abruptly and the molecule registers a steep rise in elastic modulus and relaxation time constant, with increasing contact pressure. We offer a physical explanation of the process and describe this change as due to a phase transition from a liquid like to a solid like state.

using two types of organic ligands having similar chemical structure but different physical properties and varying their dynamic population at the surface of zinc blende seed nanocrystals, self-assembled zinc blende semicircular-shaped bent nanowires of CdS are synthesized via a colloidal synthetic approach. It is found that the hydrophobic tail interaction of long-chain ligands puts strain on these thin nanowires (< 2 nm diameter) and bend them to some extent, forming strained nanowires.
