Strontium ions (Sr2+) are known to prevent osteoporosis and also encourage bone formation. Such twin requirements have motivated researchers to develop Sr-substituted biomaterials for orthopaedic applications. The present study demonstrates a new concept of developing Sr-substituted Mg-3(PO4)(2) - based biodegradable scaffolds. In particular, this work reports the fabrication, mechanical properties with an emphasis on strength reliability as well as in vitro degradation of highly biodegradable strontium-incorporated magnesium phosphate cements. These implantable scaffolds were fabricated using three-dimensional powder printing, followed by high temperature sintering and/or chemical conversion, a technique adaptable to develop patient-specific implants. A moderate combination of strength properties of 36.7 MPa (compression), 242 MPa (bending) and 10.7 MPa (tension) were measured. A reasonably modest Weibull modulus of up to 8.8 was recorded after uniaxial compression or diametral tensile tests on 3D printed scaffolds. A comparison among scaffolds with varying compositions or among sintered or chemically hardened scaffolds reveals that the strength reliability is not compromised in Sr-substituted scaffolds compared to baseline Mg-3(PO4)(2). The micro-computed tomography analysis reveals the presence of highly interconnected porous architecture in three-dimension with lognormal pore size distribution having median in the range of 17.74-26.29 mu m for the investigated scaffolds. The results of extensive in vitro ion release study revealed passive degradation with a reduced Mg2+ release and slow but sustained release of Sr2+ from strontium-substituted magnesium phosphate scaffolds. Taken together, the present study unequivocally illustrates that the newly designed Sr-substituted magnesium phosphate scaffolds with good strength reliability could be used for biomedical applications requiring consistent Sr2+-release, while the scaffold degrades in physiological medium. Statement of significance The study investigates the additive manufacturing of scaffolds based on different strontium-substituted magnesium phosphate bone cements by means of three-dimensional powder printing technique (3DPP). Magnesium phosphates were chosen due to their higher biodegradability compared to calcium phosphates, which is due to both a higher solubility as well as the absence of phase changes (to low soluble hydroxyapatite) in vivo. Since strontium ions are known to promote bone formation by stimulating osteoblast growth, we aimed to establish such a highly degradable magnesium phosphate ceramic with an enhanced bioactivity for new bone ingrowth. After post-processing, mechanical strengths of up to 36.7 MPa (compression), 24.2 MPa (bending) and 10.7 MPa (tension) could be achieved. Simultaneously, the failure reliability of those bioceramic implant materials, measured by Weibull modulus calculations, were in the range of 4.3-8.8. Passive dissolution studies in vitro proved an ion release of Mg2+ and PO43- as well as Sr2+, which is fundamental for in vivo degradation and a bone growth promoting effect. In our opinion, this work broadens the range of bioceramic bone replacement materials suitable for additive manufacturing processing. The high biodegradability of MPC ceramics together with the anticipated promoting effect on osseointegration opens up the way for a patient-specific treatment with the prospect of a fast and complete healing of bone fractures. The DL- and L-arginine complexes of oxalic acid are made up of zwitterionic positively charged amino acid molecules and semi-oxalate ions. The dissimilar molecules aggregate into separate alternating layers in the former. The basic unit in the arginine layer is a centrosymmetric dimer, while the semi-oxalate ions form hydrogen-bonded strings in their layer. In the L-arginine complex each semi-oxalate ion is surrounded by arginine molecules and the complex can be described as an inclusion compound. The oxalic acid complexes of basic amino acids exhibit a variety of ionization states and stoichiometry. They illustrate the effect of aggregation and chirality on ionization state and stoichiometry, and that of molecular properties on aggregation. The semi-oxalate/oxalate ions tend to be planar, but large departures from planarity are possible. The amino acid aggregation in the different oxalic acid complexes do not resemble one another significantly, but the aggregation of a particular amino acid in its oxalic acid complex tends to have similarities with its aggregation in other structures. Also, semi-oxalate ions aggregate into similar strings in four of the six oxalic acid complexes. Thus, the intrinsic aggregation propensities of individual molecules tend to be retained in the complexes.

Two inorganic-organic hybrid framework iron phosphate-oxalates, I, [N2C4H12](0.5)[Fe-2(HPO4)(C2O4)(1.5)] and II, [Fe-2(OH2)PO4(C2O4)(0.5)] have been synthesized by hydrothermal means and the structures determined by X-ray crystallography. Crystal Data: compound I, monoclinic, spacegroup = P2(1)/c (No. 14), a=7.569(2) Angstrom, b=7.821(2) Angstrom, c=18.033(4) Angstrom, beta=98.8(1)degrees, V=1055.0(4) Angstrom(3), Z=4, M=382.8, D-calc=2.41 g cm(-3) MoK alpha, R-F=0.02; compound II, monoclinic, spacegroup=P2(1)/c (No. 14), a=10.240(1) b=6.375(3) Angstrom, 9.955(1) Angstrom, beta=117.3(1)degrees, V=577.4(1) Angstrom(3), Z=4, M=268.7, D-calc=3.09 g cm(-3) MoK alpha, R-F=0.03. These materials contain a high proportion of three-coordinated oxygens and [Fe2O9] dimeric units, besides other interesting structural features. The connectivity of Fe2O9 is entirely different in the two materials resulting in the formation of a continuous chain of Fe-O-Fe in II. The phosphate-oxalate containing the amine, I, forms well-defined channels. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show Fen to be in the high-spin state (t(2g)(4)e(g)(2)) in II, and in the intermediate-spin state (t(2g)(5)e(g)(1)) in I.

Ce1-xSnxO2 (x = 0.1-0.5) solid solution and its Pd substituted analogue have been prepared by a single step solution combustion method using tin oxalate precursor. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and H-2/temperature programmed redution (TPR) studies. The cubic fluorite structure remained intact up to 50% of Sri substitution in CeO2, and the compounds were stable up to 700 C. Oxygen storage capacity of Ce1-xSnxO2 was found to be much higher than that of Ce1-xZrxO2 due to accessible Ce4+/Ce3+ and Sn4+/Sn2+ redox couples at temperatures between 200 and 400 C. Pd 21 ions in Ce0.78Sn0.2Pd0.02O2-delta are highly ionic, and the lattice oxygen of this catalyst is highly labile, leading to low temperature CO to CO2 conversion. The rate of CO oxidation was 2 mu mol g(-1) s(-1) at 50 degrees C. NO reduction by CO with 70% N-2 selectivity was observed at similar to 200 degrees C and 100% N-2 selectivity below 260 degrees C with 1000-5000 ppm NO. Thus, Pd2+ ion substituted Ce1-xSnxO2 is a superior catalyst compared to Pd2+ ions in CeO2, Ce1-xZrxO2, and Ce1-xTixO2 for low temperature exhaust applications due to the involvement of the Sn2+/Sn4+ redox couple along with Pd2+/Pd-0 and Ce4+/Ce3+ couples.

A complex oxalate precursor, CaCu3(TiO)(4)(C2O4)(8)center dot 9H(2)O, (CCT-OX), was synthesized and the precipitate that obtained was confirmed to be monophasic by the wet chemical analyses, X-ray diffraction, FTIR absorption and TG/DTA analyses. The thermal decomposition of this oxalate precursor led to the formation of phase-pure calcium copper titanate, CaCu3Ti4O12, (CCTO) at a parts per thousand yen680A degrees C. The bright-field TEM micrographs revealed that the size of the as synthesized crystallites to be in the 30-80 nm range. The powders so obtained had excellent sinterability resulting in high density ceramics which exhibited giant dielectric constants upto 40000 (1 kHz) at 25A degrees C, accompanied by low dielectric losses.

Mossbauer effect and X-ray measurements are carried out on product samples of the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and isothermal decomposition in hydrogen of homogeneously mixed ferrous nickel oxalates with different iron to nickel ratios. The formation of Fe-Ni alloy is obtained at considerably lower temperatures (z 300 "C) in each case. The Fe-Ni alloys obtained shift from iron-rich to nickel-rich composition as the nickel ratio in the mixed metal oxalates is increased. The formation of Pe-Ni Invar from mixed metal oxalate with Fe:Ni = 1:l is indicated in the early stages but not from those with Fe:Ni = 2: 1 or 64:36. An Produktproben von homogen verteilten Eisen-Nickeloxalaten mit unterschiedlichem Eisen- Nickel-Verhaltnis nach thermogravimetrischer Analyse (TGA) und isothermem Zerfall in Wasserst off werden Mollbauereffekt- und Rontgenmessnngen durchgefuhrt. In allen Fiillen wird die Bildung der Fe-Ni-Legierung bei betriichtlich niedrigeren Temperaturen (= 300 "C) erhalten. A new hydrazinium uranyl oxalate complex (N2H5)6[(UO2)2(C2O4)5]·2H2O has been prepared and characterized by chemical analysis, infrared, visible spectra and TG-DTA. The single crystal X-ray structure of the complex shows the presence of discrete N2H5+ cations, water molecules and [(UO2)2(C2O4)5]6− anions. In the anion, the linear uranyl groups are coordinated by two chelating bidentate oxalates and one bridging oxalate which lies on the center of symmetry between the two uranyl groups. The coordination polyhedron around each uranium atom is approximately a pentagonal bipyramid.

The emf of the galvanic cell, Pt, Ni + NiO/(CaO) ZrO2/MS + MSO4, Ir, Pt, where M is calcium, strontium, or barium, has been measured in the temperature range 850 to 1100 K. From these measurements the Gibbs’ energy changes for the oxidation of sulfides of alkaline earth metals to their respective sulfates have been calculated. The results are compared with available thermodynamic data in the literature. The agreement varies from ±2 kJ for the strontium system to ±20 kJ in the case of barium. Trends in the stabilities of alkaline earth sulfates are discussed in relation to the properties of the cationic species involved.

Synthesis of complex metal oxides by the thermal decomposition of solid-solution precursors (formed by isomorphous compounds of component metals) has been investigated since the method enables mixing of cations on an atomic scale and drastically reduces diffusion distances to a few angstroms. Several interesting oxides such as Ca2Fe03,5C, aCoz04,C a2C0205a, nd Ca,FeCo05 have been prepared by this technique starting from carbonate solid solutions of the type Ca,-,Fe,C03, Cal-,Co,C03, and Ca,-,,M,M'yC03 (M, M' = Mn, Fe, Co). The method has been extended to oxalate solid-solution precursors, and the possibility of making use of other kinds of precursor solid solutions is indicated.

The thermal decomposition of rare-earth trioxalatocobaltates LnCo(C2O4)3 · x H2O, where Ln = La, Pr, Nd, has been studied in flowing atmospheres of air/oxygen, argon/ nitrogen, carbon dioxide and a vacuum. The compounds decompose through three major steps, viz. dehydration, decomposition of the oxalate to an intermediate carbonate, which further decomposes to yield rare-earth cobaltite as the final product. The formation of the final product is influenced by the surrounding gas atmosphere. Studies on the thermal decomposition of photodecomposed lanthanum trioxalatocobaltate and a mechanical mixture of lanthanum oxalate and cobalt oxalate in 1 : 2 molar ratio reveal that the decomposition behaviour of the two samples is different. The drawbacks of the decomposition scheme proposed earlier have been pointed out, and logical schemes based on results obtained by TG, DTA, DTG, supplemented by various physico-chemical techniques such as gas and chemical analyses, IR and mass spectroscopy, surface area and magnetic susceptibility measurements and X-ray powder diffraction methods, have been proposed for the decomposition in air of rare-earth trioxalatocobaltates as well as for the photoreduced lanthanum salt and a mechanical mixture of lanthanum and cobalt oxalates.

Exposure of rats to hypobaric stress for periods of up to 36 h caused a consistent change in the succinate-NT reductase activity of the heart mitochondria whereas there was no significant change in the activities of either succinate dehydrogenase and succinate-NT reductase of the brain and the kidney. Mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase of the heart, the brain and the kidney was activated 2- to 7-fold with the substrate and malonate. The activations obtained with oxalate, citrate and dinitrophenol were relatively lower in comparison to succinate and malonate. Benzohydroquinone and 2-nitrophenol had no stimulatory effect on the heart, the brain and the kidney mitochondria. THE ACTIVATIONS OBTAINED WITH THE VARIOUS EFFECTORS PARTIALLY (OR COMPLETELY IN THE CASE OF SUCCINATE) REVERSED ON WASHING THE MITOCHONDRIAL SAMPLES WITH THE SUCROSE HOMOGENIZING MEDIUM. The effect of ubiquinol, which also activated the enzyme, was only partially reversed after the second preincubation with succinate in the brain and the kidney whereas in the heart the activity was fully reversed. The increased activity of succinate dehydrogenase obtained with ATP and ADP was further enhanced by Mg2+ exclusively in the brain mitochondria, suggesting the possibility of Mg2+-AIP complex as the active species. Succinate-NT reductase of the heart, the brain and the kidney mitochondria showed a high activation with ubiquinone whereas its reduced form had no stimulatory effect.

Eight new open-framework inorganic-organic hybrid compounds based on indium have been synthesized employing hydrothermal methods. All of the compounds have InO6, C2O4, and HPO3/HPO4/SO4 units connected to form structures of different dimensionality Thus, the compounds have zero- (I), two- (II, III, IV, V, VII, and VIII), and three-dimensionally (VI) extended networks. The formation of the first zero-dimensional hybrid compound is noteworthy In addition, concomitant polymorphic structures have been observed in the present study. The molecular compound, I, was found to be reactive, and the transformation studies in the presence of a base (pyridine) give rise to the polymorphic structures of II and III, while the addition of an acid (H3PO3) gives rise to a new indium phosphite with a pillared layer structure (T1). Preliminary density functional theory calculations suggest that the stabilities of the polymorphs are different, with one of the forms (II) being preferred over the other, which is consistent with the observed experimental behavior. The oxalate units perform more than one role in the present structures. Thus, the oxalate units connect two In centers to satisfy the coordination requirements as well as to achieve charge balance in compounds II, IV, and VI. The terminal oxalate units observed in compounds I, IV, and V suggest the possibility of intermediate structures. Both in-plane and out-of-plane connectivity of the oxalate units were observed in compound VI. The 31 compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and P-31 NMR studies.

Gadolinium strontium manganite single crystals of the composition Gd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 were grown using the optical float zone method. We report here the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of these crystals. A large magnetoresistance similar to 10(9)% was observed at 45 K under the application of a 110 kOe field. We have observed notable thermomagnetic anomalies such as open hysteresis loops across the broadened first-order transition between the charge order insulator and the ferromagnetic metallic phase while traversing the magnetic field-temperature (H-T) plane isothermally or isomagnetically. In order to discern the cause of these observed anomalies, the H-T phase diagram for Gd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 is formulated using the magnetization-field (M-H), magnetization-temperature (M-T) and resistance-temperature (R-T) measurements. The temperature dependence of the critical field (i.e. H-up, the field required for transformation to the ferromagnetic metallic phase) is non-monotonic. We note that the non-monotonic variation of the supercooling limit is anomalous according to the classical concepts of the first-order phase transition. Accordingly, H-up values below similar to 20 K are unsuitable to represent the supercooling limit. It is possible that the nature of the metastable states responsible for the observed open hysteresis loops is different from that of the supercooled ones.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies and magnetic measurements were carried out on single crystals of multiferroic DyMnO3 in hexagonal as well as orthorhombic structures. The interesting effect of strontium dilution on the frustrated antiferromagnetism of DyMnO3 is also probed using EPR. The line shapes are fitted to broad Lorentzian in the case of pure DyMnO3 and to modified Dysonian in the case of Dy0.5Sr0.5MnO3. The linewidth, integrated intensity, and geff derived from the signals are analyzed as a function of temperature. The results of magnetization measurements corroborate with EPR results. Our study clearly reveals the signature of frustrated magnetism in pure DyMnO3 systems. It is found that antiferromagnetic correlations in these systems persist even above the transition. Moreover, a spin-glass-like behavior in Dy0.5Sr0.5MnO3 is indicated by a steplike feature in the EPR signals at low fields.
