The thermal decomposition of hydrazinium monoperchlorate (HP-1) in the molten state has been investigated using differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, a constant volume manometric technique and mass-spectrometry. The stoichiometry of the reaction can be represented by the equation: 20 N2H5C1O4 13 NH4C1O4 + 3.5 Cl2 + 2 O2 + 13 N2 + 0.5 N2O + 0.5 H2 + + 23.5 H2O The data seem to indicate that the mechanism, which involves an associated complex, remains unchanged from 140 to 190°. Consequently, impurities capable of forming associated complexes with the hydrazinium or the perchlorate ion desensitize the thermal decomposition of HP-1, the extent of desensitization being determined by the size, the charge and the concentration of the impurity.
Application of Laplace transform technique to the solution of certain third-order non-linear systems
Resumo:
A number of papers have appeared on the application of operational methods and in particular the Laplace transform to problems concerning non-linear systems of one kind or other. This, however, has met with only partial success in solving a class of non-linear problems as each approach has some limitations and drawbacks. In this study the approach of Baycura has been extended to certain third-order non-linear systems subjected to non-periodic excitations, as this approximate method combines the advantages of engineering accuracy with ease of application to such problems. Under non-periodic excitations the method provides a procedure for estimating quickly the maximum response amplitude, which is important from the point of view of a designer. Limitations of such a procedure are brought out and the method is illustrated by an example taken from a physical situation.

A new method for decomposition of compo,.~itsei gnals is presented. It is shown that high freyuency portion of composite signal spectrum possesses information on echo structure. The proposed technique does not assume the shape of basic wavelet and does not place any restrictions on the amplitudes and arrival times of echoes inm the composite signal. In the absence of noise any desirrd resolution can he obtained The effect of sampling rate and jFequency window function on echo resolutio.~ are di.wussed. Voiced speech segment is considered as an example of conzpxite sigrnl to demonstrate the application of the decomposition technique.

Birefringent composite models are fabricated using epoxy resin reinforced with unidirectionally oriented glass fibers. The mechanical and photoelastic properties of the material at room temperature are determined. To explore the possibility of application of stress-freezing technique to birefringent composite models, the behavior and properties of this material are studied at elevated temperature (at stress-freezing temperature of the resin). The properties of the material at room and at elevated temperatures are reported. The feasibility of stress freezing glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy composites with low-fiber-volume fraction is discussed.

A nonexhaustive procedure for obtaining minimal Reed-Muller canonical (RMC) forms of switching functions is presented. This procedure is a modification of a procedure presented earlier in the literature and enables derivation of an upper bound on the number of RMC forms to be derived to choose a minimal one. It is shown that the task of obtaining minimal RMC forms is simplified in the case of symmetric functions and self-dual functions.

This paper describes a simple technique for the fermentation of untreated or partly-treated leafy biomass in a digester of novel design without incurring the normal problems of feeding, floating and scum formation of feed, etc. The solid phase fermentation studied consists of a bed of biomass frequently sprinkled with an aqueous bacterial inoculum and recycling the leachate to conserve moisture and improve the bacterial dispersion in the bed. The decomposition of the leaf biomass and water hyacinth substrates used in this study was rapid, taking 45 and 30 days for the production of 250 and 235 l biogas per kg total solids (TS) respectively, for the above mentioned substrates at a daily sprinkled volume of 26 ml cm−2 of bed per day sprinkled at 12 h intervals. Very little volatile fatty acid (VFA) intermediates accumulated in the liquid sprinkled, suggesting acidogenesis to be rate-limiting in this process. From the pattern of VFA and gas produced it is concluded that most of the biogas produced is from the biomass bed, thus making the operation of a separate methanogenic reactor unnecessary.

This article addresses the problem of how to select the optimal combination of sensors and how to determine their optimal placement in a surveillance region in order to meet the given performance requirements at a minimal cost for a multimedia surveillance system. We propose to solve this problem by obtaining a performance vector, with its elements representing the performances of subtasks, for a given input combination of sensors and their placement. Then we show that the optimal sensor selection problem can be converted into the form of Integer Linear Programming problem (ILP) by using a linear model for computing the optimal performance vector corresponding to a sensor combination. Optimal performance vector corresponding to a sensor combination refers to the performance vector corresponding to the optimal placement of a sensor combination. To demonstrate the utility of our technique, we design and build a surveillance system consisting of PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras and active motion sensors for capturing faces. Finally, we show experimentally that optimal placement of sensors based on the design maximizes the system performance.

Time reversal active sensing using Lamb waves is investigated for health monitoring of a metallic structure. Experiments were conducted on an aluminum plate to study the time reversal behavior of A(0) and S-0 Lamb wave modes under narrow band and broad band pulse excitation. Damage in the form of a notch was introduced in the plate to study the changes in the characteristics of the time reversed Lamb wave modes experimentally. Time-frequency analysis of the time reversed signal was carried out to extract the damage information. A measure of damage based on wavelet transform was derived to quantify the hidden damage information in the time reversed signal. It has been shown that time reversal can be used to achieve temporal recompression of Lamb waves under broadband signal excitation. Further, the broad band excitation can also improve the resolution of the technique in detecting closely located defects. This is demonstrated by picking up the reflection of waves from the edge of the plate, from a defect close to the edge of the plate and from defects located near to each other. This study shows the effectiveness of Lamb wave time reversal for temporal recompression of dispersive Lamb waves for damage detection in health monitoring applications. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. 1. The rat brain type IIA Na+ channel alpha-subunit was stably expressed in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Current through the expressed Na+ channels was studied using the whole-cell configuration of the patch clamp technique. The transient Na+ current was sensitive to TTX and showed a bell-shaped peak current vs. membrane potential relation. 2. Na+ current inactivation was better described by the sum of two exponentials in the potential range -30 to +40 mV, with. a dominating fast component and a small slower component. 3. The steady-state inactivation, h(infinity), was related to potential by a Boltzmann distribution, underlying thr ee states of the inactivation gate. 4. Recovery of the channels from inactivation at different potentials in the range -70 to -120 mV were characterized by al? initial delay which decreased with hyperpolarization. The time course was well fitted by the sum of two exponentials. In this case the slower exponential was the major component, and both time constants decreased with hyperpolarization. 5. For a working description of the Na+ channel inactivation in this preparation, with a minimal deviation from the Hodgkin-Huxley model, a three-state scheme of the form O reversible arrow I-1 reversible arrow I-2 was proposed, replacing the original two-state scheme of the Hodgkin-Huxley model, and the rate constants are reported. 6. The instantaneous current-voltage relationship showed marked deviation from linearity and was satisfactorily fitted by the constant-field equation. 7. The time course of activation was described by an m(x) model. However, the best-fitted value of x varied with the membrane potential and had a mean value of 2. 8. Effective gating charge was determined to be 4.7e from the slope of the activation plot, plotted on a logarithmic scale. 9. The rate constants of activation, alpha(m) and beta(m), were determined. Their functional dependence on the membrane potential was investigated.

A numerical modelling technique for predicting the detailed performance of a double-inlet type two-stage pulse tube refrigerator has been developed. The pressure variations in the compressor, pulse tube, and reservoir were derived, assuming the stroke volume variation of the compressor to be sinusoidal. The relationships of mass flowrates, volume flowrates, and temperature as a function of time and position were developed. The predicted refrigeration powers are calculated by considering the effect of void volumes and the phase shift between pressure and mass flowrate. These results are compared with the experimental results of a specific pulse tube refrigerator configuration and an existing theoretical model. The analysis shows that the theoretical predictions are in good agreement with each other.

In this paper, a new technique is presented to increase the bandwidth for a single stage amplifier. Usually, -3 dB bandwidth of single stage amplifier is in few MHz. High output impedance and subsequent capacitive loading decrease the bandwidth of amplifier. The presented technique uses a load which itself acts as bandwidth enhancer. This high speed amplifier is designed on 180 nm CMOS technology, operates at 2.5 V power supply. This amplifier is succeeded by an output buffer to achieve a better linearity, high output swing and required output impedance for matching.

A simple effective pyrolysis technique has been developed to synthesize aligned arrays of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) without using any carrier gas in a single-stage furnace at 700 °C. This technique eliminates nearly the entire complex and expensive machinery associated with other extensively used methods for preparation of CNTs such as chemical vapour deposition (CVD) and pyrolysis. Carbon source materials such as xylene, cyclohexane, camphor, hexane, toluene, pyridine and benzene have been pyrolyzed separately with the catalyst source material ferrocene to obtain aligned arrays of MWCNTs. The synthesized CNTs have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Raman spectroscopy. In this technique, the need for the tedious and time-consuming preparation of metal catalysts and continuously fed carbon source material containing carrier gas can be avoided. This method is a single-step process where not many parameters are required to be monitored in order to prepare aligned MWCNTs. For the production of CNTs, the technique has great advantages such as low cost and easy operation.

Instrumented indentation experiments on a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) in as-cast, shot-peened and structurally relaxed conditions were conducted to examine the dependence of plastic deformation on its structural state. Results show significant differences in hardness, H, with structural relaxation increasing it and shot peening markedly reducing it, and slightly changed morphology of shear bands around the indents. This is in contrast to uniaxial compressive yield strength, sigma(y), which remains invariant with the change in the structural state of the alloys investigated. The plastic constraint factor, C = H/sigma(y), of the relaxed BMG increases compared with that of the as-cast glass, indicating enhanced pressure sensitivity upon annealing. In contrast, C of the shot-peened layer was found to be similar to that observed in crystalline metals, indicating that severe plastic deformation could eliminate pressure sensitivity. Microscopic origins for this result, in terms of shear transformation zones and free volume, are discussed.

The paper presents a novel slicing based method for computation of volume fractions in multi-material solids given as a B-rep whose faces are triangulated and shared by either one or two materials. Such objects occur naturally in geoscience applications and the said computation is necessary for property estimation problems and iterative forward modeling. Each facet in the model is cut by the planes delineating the given grid structure or grid cells. The method, instead of classifying the points or cells with respect to the solid, exploits the convexity of triangles and the simple axis-oriented disposition of the cutting surfaces to construct a novel intermediate space enumeration representation called slice-representation, from which both the cell containment test and the volume-fraction computation are done easily. Cartesian and cylindrical grids with uniform and non-uniform spacings have been dealt with in this paper. After slicing, each triangle contributes polygonal facets, with potential elliptical edges, to the grid cells through which it passes. The volume fractions of different materials in a grid cell that is in interaction with the material interfaces are obtained by accumulating the volume contributions computed from each facet in the grid cell. The method is fast, accurate, robust and memory efficient. Examples illustrating the method and performance are included in the paper.
