Integrating low dielectric permittivity (low-k) polymers to metals is an exacting fundamental challenge because poor bonding between low-polarizability moieties and metals precludes good interfacial adhesion. Conventional adhesion-enhancing methods such as using intermediary layers are unsuitable for engineering polymer/metal interfaces for many applications because of the collateral increase in dielectric permittivity. Here, we demonstrate a completely new approach without surface treatments or intermediary layers to obtain an excellent interfacial fracture toughness of > 13 J/m(2) in a model system comprising copper. and a cross-linked polycarbosilane with k similar to 2.7 obtained by curing a cyclolinear polycarbosilane in air.Our results suggest that interfacial oxygen catalyzed molecularring-opening and anchoring of the opened ring moieties of the polymer to copper is the main toughening mechanism. This novel approach of realizing adherent low-k polymer/metal structures without intermediary layers by activating metal-anchoring polymer moieties at the interface could be adapted for applications such as device wiring and packaging, and laminates and composites.

A polymer containing electron-rich aromatic donors (1,5-dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN)) was coerced into a folded state by an external folding agent that contained an electron-deficient aromatic acceptor (pyromellitic diimide (PM)) unit. The donor-containing polymer was designed to carry a tertiary amine moiety in the linking segment, which served as an H-bonding site for reinforcing the interaction with the acceptor containing folding agent that also bore a carboxylic acid group. The H-bonding interaction of the carboxylic acid and the tertiary amine brings the PDI unit between two adjacent DAN units along the polymer backbone to induce charge-transfer (C-T) interactions, and this in turn causes the polymer chain to form a pleated structure. Evidence for the formation of such a pleated structure was obtained from NMR titration studies and also by monitoring the C-T band in their UV-visible spectra. By varying the length of the segment that links the PDI acceptor to the carboxylic acid group, we showed that the most effective folding agent was the one that had a single carbon spacer, as evident from the highest value of the association constant. Control experiments with propionic acid clearly demonstrated the importance of the additional C-T interactions for venerating the folded structures. Further, solution viscosity measurements in the presence of varying amounts of the folding agent revealed a gradual stiffening of the chain in the case of the PDI carrying carboxylic acid, whereas no such affect was seen in the case of simple propionic acid. These observations were supported by D FT calculations of the interactions of a dimeric model of the polymer with the various folding agents; here too the stability of the complex was seen to be highest in the case of the single carbon spacer.

Layered LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, which is isostructural with LiCoO2, is considered as a potential cathode material for Li-ion batteries. Submicrometer sized porous particles are useful for high discharge rates. The present work involves a synthesis of submicrometer sized porous particles of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 using a triblock copolymer as a soft template. The precursor obtained from the reaction is heated at different temperatures between 600 and 900 degrees C for 6 h to get the final product samples. The compound attains increased crystallinity with an increase in the temperature of preparation. However, there is a decrease in the surface area and also in the porosity of the sample. Nevertheless, the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 sample prepared at 900 degrees C exhibits a high rate capability and stable capacity retention on cycling. The electrochemical performance of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 prepared in the absence of the polymer template is inferior to that of the sample prepared in the presence of the polymer template. One of the biggest challenges when considering polymer nanocomposites for electrical insulation applications lies in determining their electrical properties accurately, which in turn depend on several factors, primary being dispersion of particles in the polymer matrix. With this background, this paper reports an experimental study to understand the effects of different processing techniques on the dispersion of filler particles in the polymer matrix and their related effect on the dielectric properties of the composites. Polymer composite and nanocomposite samples for the study were prepared by mixing 10% by weight of commercially available TiO2 particles of two different sizes in epoxy using different processing methods. A considerable effect of the composite processing method could be seen in the dielectric properties of nanocomposites.

The linear stability analysis of a plane Couette flow of viscoelastic fluid have been studied with the emphasis on two dimensional disturbances with wave number k similar to Re-1/2, where Re is Reynolds number based on maximum velocity and channel width. We employ three models to represent the dilute polymer solution: the classical Oldroyd-B model, the Oldroyd-B model with artificial diffusivity and the non-homogeneous polymer model. The result of the linear stability analysis is found to be sensitive to the polymer model used. While the plane Couette flow is found to be stable to infinitesimal disturbances for the first two models, the last one exhibits a linear instability.

Ionic conductivity and other physico-chemical properties of a soft matter composite electrolyte comprising of a polymer-sodium salt complex and a non-ionic plastic crystal are discussed here. The electrolyte under discussion comprises of polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and succinonitrile (SN). Addition of SN to PEO-NaCF3SO3 resulted in significant enhancement in ionic conductivity. At 50% SN concentration (with respect to weight of polymer), the polymer-plastic composite electrolyte room temperature (= 25 degrees C) ionic conductivity was similar to 1.1 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately 45 times higher than PEO-NaCF3SO3. Observations from ac-impedance spectroscopy along with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform inrared spectroscopy strongly suggest the enhancement in the composite is ionicconductivity due to enhanced ion mobility via decrease in crystallinity of PEO. The free standing composite polymer-plastic electrolytes were more compliable than PEO-NaCF3SO3 thus exhibiting no detrimental effects of succinonitrile addition on the mechanical stability of PEO-NaCF3SO3. We propose that the exploratory PEO-NaCF3SO3-SN system.discussed here will eventually be developed as a prototype electrolyte.for sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operating at ambient and.sub-ambient conditions. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) of poly(ethyleneoxide) and magnesium triflate, which are plasticized with propylene carbonate (PC), ethylene carbonate (EC) and a mixture of PC and EC, are studied for their conductivity, ac impedance of the Mg I SPE interface, cyclic voltammetry, infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. in the presence of plasticizers, the ionic conductivity (a) increases from a value of 1 x 10(-8) S cm(-1) to about 1 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at ambient temperature. The a is found to follow a VTF relationship with temperature. The values of the activation energy, pre-exponential factor and equilibrium glass transition temperature are shown to depend on the concentration of plasticizer. Ac impedance studies indicate lower interfacial impedance of Mg/plasticized SPE than stainless steel/plasticized SPE. The impedance spectra are analyzed using a non-linear least square curve fitting technique and the interfacial resistance of Mg/plasticized SPE is evaluated. The cyclic voltammetric results suggest a quasireversible type of Mg/Mg2+ couple in plasticized SPE. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We investigate the dielectric response of single-walled carbon nanotubes dispersed in poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix by using terahertz time domain spectroscopy. Frequency-dependent real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric function are measured experimentally in the terahertz regime. The low-frequency phonons of carbon nanotubes, though predicted theoretically, are directly observed for the first time at frequencies 0.26, 0.60, and 0.85 THz. Further, a broad resonance is observed at 1.15 THz associated with the longitudinal acoustic mode of vibration of straight-chain segments of the long polymeric molecules in the film. The latter is observed at 1.24 THz for a pristine polymer film and has been used to derive the size of crystalline lamellae in the film.

Moisture absorption characteristics and its effects on the mechanical properties and failure process of polymers (neat epoxy and polyester resins) and composites with simple (glass, carbon and kevlar) and hybrid (glass-carbon, carbon-kevlar and kevlar-glass) fibres were experimentally determined before and after immersion in water at 343 K for 20 days. The maximum moisture content (Mm) and diffusion coefficient (Dx) of these composites were determined. The degradation in ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus due to the moisture content were experimentally determined and found to be quite significant. Acoustic emissions, from specimens before and after exposure, were monitored during the load cycle, and revealed a significant change in the failure process of these composites. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) studies on failed exposed and unexposed specimens revealed resin leach out and fibre prominence.

Polymer nanocomposites containing different concentrations of Au nanoparticles have been investigated by small angle X-ray scattering and electronic absorption spectroscopy. The variation in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of Au nanoparticles with concentration is described by a scaling law. The variation in the plasmon band of ReO3 nanoparticles embedded in polymers also follows a similar scaling law. Sistance dependence of plasmon coupling in polymer composites f metal nanoparticles. We report a simple modified polymeric precursor route for the synthesis of highly crystalline and homogenous nanoparticles of lanthanum calcium manganese oxide (LCMO). The LCMO phase formation was studied by thermal analysis, x-ray powder diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy at different stages of heating. These nanocrystallites (average particle size of 30 nm) possess ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperature (T-c) of 300 K, nearly 50 K higher than that of a single crystal. The Rietveld analysis of the powder x-ray diffraction data of the nanopowders reveals significant lattice contraction and reduction in unit cell anisotropy-these structural changes are correlated to the enhancement in T-c.

We have prepared a new nanocomposite polymer electrolyte using nanoparticles of hydrotalcite, an anionic clay, as the filler. Hydrotalcite has the chemical composition [M-1-x(2+) M-x(3+) (OH)(2)](x+) [A(x/n)(n-)center dot mH(2)O] where M2+ is a divalent cation (e.g. Mg2+, Ni2+, Co2+,etc.) and M3+ is a trivalent cation (e.g. Al3+, Fe3+, Cr3+, etc.). A(n-) is an anion intercalated between the positively charged double hydroxide layers. The nanoparticles of [Mg0.67Al0.33 (OH)(2)] [(CO3)(0.17)center dot mH(2)O] were prepared by the co-precipitation method (average particle size as observed by TEM similar to 50 nm) and were doped into poly(ethylene glycol) PEG (m.w.2000) complexed with LiCIO4. Samples with different wt.% of hydrotalcite were prepared and characterized using XRD, DSC, TGA, impedance spectroscopy and NMR. Ionic conductivity for the pristine sample, similar to 7.3 x 10(-7) S cm(-1), was enhanced to a maximum of = 1.1 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) for 3.6 wt.% nanoparticle doped sample. We propose that the enhancement of ionic conductivity is caused by percolation effects of the high conductivity paths provided by interfaces between the nanoparticles and the polymer electrolyte. We have developed a novel nanoparticle tracking based interface microrheology technique to perform in situ studies on confined complex fluids. To demonstrate the power of this technique, we show, for the first time, how in situ glass formation in polymers confined at air-water interface can be directly probed by monitoring variation of the mean square displacement of embedded nanoparticles as a function of surface density. We have further quantified the appearance of dynamic heterogeneity and hence vitrification in polymethyl methacrylate monolayers above a certain surface density, through the variation of non-Gaussian parameter of the probes. Understanding the influence of polymer grafted bilayers on the physicomechanical properties of lipid membranes is important while developing liposomal based drug delivery systems. The melting characteristics and bending moduli of polymer grafted bilayers are investigated using dissipative particle dynamics simulations as a function of the amount of grafted polymer and lipid tail length. Simulations are carried out using a modified Andersen barostat, whereby the membrane is maintained in a tensionless state. For lipids made up of four to six tail beads, the transition from the low temperature L-beta phase to the L-alpha phase is lowered only above a grafting fraction of G(f)=0.12 for polymers made up of 20 beads. Below G(f)=0.12 small changes are observed only for the HT4 bilayer. The bending modulus of the bilayers is obtained as a function of G(f) from a Fourier analysis of the height fluctuations. Using the theory developed by Marsh Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1615, 33 (2003)] for polymer grafted membranes, the contributions to the bending modulus due to changes arising from the grafted polymer and bilayer thinning are partitioned. The contributions to the changes in kappa from bilayer thinning were found to lie within 11% for the lipids with four to six tail beads, increasing to 15% for the lipids containing nine tail beads. The changes in the area stretch modulus were also assessed and were found to have a small influence on the overall contribution from membrane thinning. The increase in the area per head group of the lipids was found to be consistent with the scalings predicted by self-consistent mean field results. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics.
