H-1 Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) NMR of layered HNbWO6 . xH(2)O (x = 1.5, 0.5) is carried out at room temperature and at various spinning speeds (1-12 kHz). Results on the fully hydrated sample (x = 1.5) are consistent with the model of diffusion of H3O+ ions within the layers. In the partially dehydrated sample (x = 0.5) an exchange between the distinctly present cage protons and H3O+ protons leads to protonic conduction.

Passivation of point and extended defects in GaSb has been observed as a result of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) treatment by the glow discharge technique. Cathodoluminescence (CL) images recorded at various depths in the samples clearly show passivation of defects on the surface as well as in the bulk region. The passivation of various recombination centers in the bulk is attributed to the formation of hydrogen-impurity complexes by diffusion of hydrogen ions from the plasma a-Si:H acts as a protective cap layer and prevents surface degradation which is usually encountered by bare exposure to hydrogen plasma. An enhancement in luminescence intensity up to 20 times is seen due to the passivation of nonradiative recombination centers. The passivation efficiency is found to improve with an increase in a-Si:H deposition temperature. The relative passivation efficiency of donors and acceptors by hydrogen in undoped and Te-compensated p-GaSb has been evaluated by CL and by the temperature dependence of photoluminescence intensities. Most notably, effective passivation of minority dopants in tellurium compensated p-GaSb is evidenced for the first time. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

The reactivation kinetics of passivated Mg acceptors in hydrogenated InP during unbiased annealing of a Schottky diode is reported. The reactivation is found to slow down gradually with annealing time and this phenomenon is attributed to substantial retrapping of H at the acceptor sites. It is found from the concentration profiles and the kinetics data that the reactivation is most likely limited by H2 molecule formation processes for longer annealing times; for shorter annealing times, contributions from in-diffusion of H also become significant. The diffusion of H during the initial period follows an Arrhenius relation with an activation energy for the effective diffusion coefficient of 1.13±0.10 eV. In the H2 formation regime, the reactivation is thermally activated with an activation energy for the annealing parameter of 1.71±0.10 eV. The H2 formation-limited regime of reactivation occurs sooner as the annealing temperature is increased.

Coarse BO2·xH2O (2 < x < 80) gels, free of anion contaminants react with A(OH)2 under refluxing conditions at 70100°C giving rise to crystallites of single phased, nanometer size powders of ABO3 perovskites (A = Ba, Sr, Ca, Mg, Pb; B = Zr, Ti, Sn). Solid solutions of perovskites could be prepared from compositionally modified gels or mixtures of A(OH)2. Donor doped perovskites could also be prepared from the same method so that the products after processing are often semiconducting. Faster interfacial diffusion of A2+ ions into the gel generates the crystalline regions whose composition is controllable by the A/B ratio as well as the A(OH)2 concentration.

The mechanism of reduction of iron and chromium oxide from synthetic electric are furnace stainless steelmaking slags has been studied. The activation energy for reduction of FeO depends on the FeO content of the slag and the nature of the product formed. The rate of reduction of both FeO and Cr2O3 is controlled by diffusion of ions in the slag phase. The reduction of Cr2O3 primarily takes place at the slag/Fe-C droplets interface. IS/1352b. A simplified structural model to study the ionic transport in silver based glasses has been formulated. The diffusion of silver ion under the influence of coulombic interactions of mobile cation and anions has been studied. Monte Carlo simulations of silver ion hopping in glass have suggested two different kinds of population of silver ions. We discuss the results of variation in diffusion constant with dopant (AgI) concentration using the diffusion path model. (C) 1997 Elsevier-Science S.A.

The reactivation kinetics of passivated boron accepters in hydrogenated silicon during zero bias annealing in the temperature range of 65-130 degrees C are reported, For large annealing times and high annealing temperatures, the reactivation process follows second-order kinetics and is rate limited by a thermally activated <(H)over tilde (2)> complex formation process, For short annealing times and low annealing temperatures, the reactivation rate is found to be larger than that due to <(H)over tilde (2)> complex formation alone. We conclude that the faster reactivation is caused by the diffusion of the liberated hydrogen atoms into the bulk as well as <(H)over tilde (2)> complex formation. The effective diffusion coefficient of hydrogen is measured and found to obey the Arrhenius relation with an activation energy (1.41 +/- 0.1) eV. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.

The kinetics of the processes in facing targets sputtering of multicomponent oxide films is presented. The novel configuration of the process exhibits an enhanced ionization efficiency. Discharge diagnostics performed using optical emission spectroscopy revealed strong dependence of plasma parameters on process conditions. Numerical simulation based on thermalization and diffusion of sputtered atoms has been performed to estimate the transport efficiency in off-axis mode. Composition, structure and epitaxial quality of YBa2Cu3O7-x films prepared was found to be strongly dependent on atomic flux ratios (of Cu/Y and Ba/Y) arriving at the substrate, resputtering effect and phase stability of YBa2Cu3O7-x These studies have been shown to be useful in understanding the complex processes that occur in sputtering of multicomponent films. A polyphosphate ester was synthesized by interfacial polycondensation of bisphenol-A and phenylphosphorodichloridate. Accelerated hydrolytic degradation studies were conducted under alkaline conditions. The effect of concentration of alkali and temperature were monitored. The rate of degradation reached a maximum value at 6 molar sodium hydroxide solution and then reduced. The activation energy for hydrolytic degradation was found to be 45 kcal/mol. Diffusion of alkali into the polymer pellet was studied at various concentrations of alkali and at various temperatures. The rate of diffusion also attained a maximum at 6M NaOH and the activation energy for diffusion process was found to be 12 kcal/mol. (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Inc.

We have investigated the microstructure of thin films grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition using a beta-diketonate complex of cobalt, namely cobalt (11) acetylacetonate. Films were deposited on three different substrates: Si(100), thermally oxidised silicon [SiO2/Si(100)] and glass at the same time. As-grown films were characterised by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy, atomic force microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Electrical resistivity was measured for all the films as a function of temperature. We found that films have very fine grains, resulting in high electrical resistivity Further, film microstructure has a strong dependence on the nature of the substrate and there is diffusion of silicon and oxygen into cobalt from the substrate. The dynamics of water molecules near an aqueous micellar interface is studied in an atomistic molecular dynamics simulation of cesium pentadecafluorooctanoate (CsPFO) in water. The dipolar orientational time correlation function (tcf) and the translational diffusion of the water molecules are investigated. Results show that both the reorientational and the translational motion of water molecules near the micelle are restricted. In particular, the orientational tcf exhibits a very slow component in the long time which is slower than its bulk value by 2 orders of magnitude. This slow decay seems to be related to the slow decay often observed in experiments. The origin of the slow decay is analyzed.

Epoxy systems containing HTBN rubber material and reinforced with E-glass fibres, exposed to a fixed time duration in three separate media were subjected to compressive mode of deformation. The yield stress and fractographic features noted on the compression failed samples are reported in this work. The experiment reveals that the seawater exposed sample exhibits a drop in strength compared to dry (unexposed) sample. This kind of drop is maintained if the media is changed from seawater to distilled water. When HCl is included in seawater. the experiment shows a small rise in strength value. These changes have been attributed to various factors like medium ingress into samples assisting interface failure, the larger-sized Cl- influencing the extent of diffusion of medium into system and finally their participation in the deformation phenomena. The fractographic features reveal interface separations that show either scattered debris or a cleaner surface or display a whitish-coated matrix region depending on whether the tests are done on unexposed samples or on ones following the immersion in the media.

A one-dimensional, biphasic, multicomponent steady-state model based on phenomenological transport equations for the catalyst layer, diffusion layer, and polymeric electrolyte membrane has been developed for a liquid-feed solid polymer electrolyte direct methanol fuel cell (SPE- DMFC). The model employs three important requisites: (i) implementation of analytical treatment of nonlinear terms to obtain a faster numerical solution as also to render the iterative scheme easier to converge, (ii) an appropriate description of two-phase transport phenomena in the diffusive region of the cell to account for flooding and water condensation/evaporation effects, and (iii) treatment of polarization effects due to methanol crossover. An improved numerical solution has been achieved by coupling analytical integration of kinetics and transport equations in the reaction layer, which explicitly include the effect of concentration and pressure gradient on cell polarization within the bulk catalyst layer. In particular, the integrated kinetic treatment explicitly accounts for the nonhomogeneous porous structure of the catalyst layer and the diffusion of reactants within and between the pores in the cathode. At the anode, the analytical integration of electrode kinetics has been obtained within the assumption of macrohomogeneous electrode porous structure, because methanol transport in a liquid-feed SPE- DMFC is essentially a single-phase process because of the high miscibility of methanol with water and its higher concentration in relation to gaseous reactants. A simple empirical model accounts for the effect of capillary forces on liquid-phase saturation in the diffusion layer. Consequently, diffusive and convective flow equations, comprising Nernst-Plank relation for solutes, Darcy law for liquid water, and Stefan-Maxwell equation for gaseous species, have been modified to include the capillary flow contribution to transport. To understand fully the role of model parameters in simulating the performance of the DMCF, we have carried out its parametric study. An experimental validation of model has also been carried out. Cathodoluminescence (CL) technique has been employed to study the optical properties of GaSb after deposition of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). CL images recorded at various depths in the samples clearly show passivation of extended defects on the surface as well as in the bulk region. The passivation of various recombination centres in the bulk is attributed to formation of hydrogen-impurity complexes by diffusion of hydrogen ions from the plasma. Enhancement in luminescence intensity is seen due to passivation of non-radiative recombination centres. The passivation efficiency is found to improve with increase in a-Si:H deposition temperature.

The severe wear of a near eutectic aluminium silicon alloy is explored using a range of electron microscopic, spectroscopic and diffraction techniques to identify the residually strained and unstrained regions, microcracks and oxidized regions in the subsurface. In severe wear the contact pressure exceeds the elastic shakedown limit. Under this condition the primary and eutectic silicon particles fragment drastically. The fragments are transported by the matrix as it undergoes incremental straining with each cyclic contact at the asperity level. The grains are refined from similar to 2000 nm in the bulk to 30 nm in the near surface region. A large reduction in the interparticle distance compared with that for a milder stage of wear gives rise to high strain gradients which contribute to an enhancement of the dislocation density. The resulting regions of very high strain in the boundaries of the recrystallized grains as well as within the subgrains lead to the formation of microvoidskracks. This is accompanied by the formation of brittle oxides at these subsurface interfaces due to enhanced diffusion of oxygen. We believe that the abundance of such microcracks in the near surface region, primed by severe plastic deformation, is what distinguishes a severe wear regime from mild wear.
