Hyperbranched polyethers having poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segments at their molecular periphery were prepared by a simple procedure wherein an AB2 type monomer was melt-polycondensed with an A-type monomer, namely, heptaethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The presence of a large number of PEG units at the termini rendered a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) to these copolymers, above which they precipitated out of an aqueous solution. In an effort to understand the effect of various molecular structural parameters on their LCST, the length of the hydrophobic spacer segment within the hyperbranched core and the extent of PEGylation were varied. Additionally, linear analogues that incorporates pendant PEG segments were also prepared and comparison of their LCST with that of the hyperbranched analogue clearly revealed that hyperbranched topology leads to a substantial increase in the LCST, highlighting the importance of the peripheral placement of the PEG units.

Experiments are carried out with air as the test gas to obtain the surface convective heating rate on a missile shaped body flying at hypersonic speeds. The effect of fins on the surface heating rates of missile frustum is also investigated. The tests are performed in a hypersonic shock tunnel at stagnation enthalpy of 2 MJ/kg and zero degree angle of attack. The experiments are conducted at flow Mach number of 5.75 and 8 with an effective test time of 1 ms. The measured stagnation-point heat-transfer data compares well with the theoretical value estimated using Fay and Riddell expression. The measured heat-transfer rate with fin configuration is slightly higher than that of model without fin. The normalized values of experimentally measured heat transfer rate and Stanton number compare well with the numerically estimated results. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In the present investigation, tests were conducted on a tribological couple made of cylindrical lead pin with spherical tip against 080 M40 steel plates of different textures with varying roughness under both dry and lubricated conditions using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester. Surface roughness parameters of the steel plates were measured using optical profilometer. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the pins and the formation of transfer layer on the counter surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope. It was observed that the coefficient of friction and the formation of transfer layer depend primarily on the surface texture of hard surfaces. A newly formulated non-dimensional hybrid roughness parameter called 'xi' (a product of number of peaks and maximum profile peak height) of the tool surface plays an important role in determining the frictional behaviour of the surfaces studied. The effect of surfaces texture on coefficient of friction was attributed to the variation of plowing component of friction, which in turn depends on the roughness parameter 'xi'.

Conjugated polymers are promising materials for electrochromic device technology. Aqueous dispersions of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-(PEDOT) were spin coated onto transparent conducting oxide (TCO) coated glass substrates. A seven-layer electrochromic device was fabricated with the following configuration: glass/transparent conducting oxide (TCO)/PEDOT (main electrochromic layer)/gel electrolyte/prussian blue (counter electrode)/TCO/glass. The device fabricated with counter electrode (Prussian blue) showed a contrast of 18% and without counter electrode showed visible contrast of 5% at 632 nm at a voltage of 1.9 V. The comparison of the device is done in terms of the colouration efficiency of the devices with and without counter electrode.

End-tethered chains made of an adsorbed diblock copolymer of polystyrene (PS)-polyisoprene (PI) bearing an end-segment including a Ge atom are built by the Langmuir-Schaeffer technique. They are studied both in the dry state and in a good solvent for the PI chain using grazing incidence X-ray standing waves. The analysis of the signal provides a direct measurement of the end-segment distribution which is found to be singular and mostly localized to a plane in the dry case. In the good solvent case, end-segments are found to span the entire assembly and compare very well with results obtained by Kreer et al.

We address the issue of rate-distortion (R/D) performance optimality of the recently proposed switched split vector quantization (SSVQ) method. The distribution of the source is modeled using Gaussian mixture density and thus, the non-parametric SSVQ is analyzed in a parametric model based framework for achieving optimum R/D performance. Using high rate quantization theory, we derive the optimum bit allocation formulae for the intra-cluster split vector quantizer (SVQ) and the inter-cluster switching. For the wide-band speech line spectrum frequency (LSF) parameter quantization, it is shown that the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based parametric SSVQ method provides 1 bit/vector advantage over the non-parametric SSVQ method.

We propose a new weighting function which is computationally simple and an approximation to the theoretically derived optimum weighting function shown in the literature. The proposed weighting function is perceptually motivated and provides improved vector quantization performance compared to several weighting functions proposed so far, for line spectrum frequency (LSF) parameter quantization of both clean and noisy speech data.

We discuss a technique for solving the Landau-Zener (LZ) problem of finding the probability of excitation in a two-level system. The idea of time reversal for the Schrodinger equation is employed to obtain the state reached at the final time and hence the excitation probability. Using this method, which can reproduce the well-known expression for the LZ transition probability, we solve a variant of the LZ problem, which involves waiting at the minimum gap for a time t(w); we find an exact expression for the excitation probability as a function of t(w). We provide numerical results to support our analytical expressions. We then discuss the problem of waiting at the quantum critical point of a many-body system and calculate the residual energy generated by the time-dependent Hamiltonian. Finally, we discuss possible experimental realizations of this work.

Reactive Pulsed Laser Deposition is a single step process wherein the ablated elemental metal reacts with a low pressure ambient gas to form a compound. We report here a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry based analytical methodology to conduct minimum number of experiments to arrive at optimal process parameters to obtain high quality TiN thin film. Quality of these films was confirmed by electron microscopic analysis. This methodology can be extended for optimization of other process parameters and materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Surface texture of harder mating surfaces plays an important role during sliding against softer materials and hence the importance of characterizing the surfaces in terms of roughness parameters. In the present investigation, basic studies were conducted using inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester to understand the surface texture effect of hard surfaces on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. A tribological couple made of a super purity aluminium pin against steel plate was used in the tests. Two surface parameters of steel plates, namely roughness and texture, were varied in the tests. It was observed that the transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction along with its two components, namely, the adhesion and plowing, are controlled by the surface texture and are independent of surface roughness (R-a). Among the various surface roughness parameters, the average or the mean slope of the profile was found to explain the variations best. Under lubricated conditions, stick-slip phenomena was observed, the amplitude of which depends on the plowing component of friction. The presence of stick-slip motion under lubricated conditions could be attributed to the molecular deformation of the lubricant component confined between asperities. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. In the present work, solidification of a hyper-eutectic ammonium chloride solution in a bottom-cooled cavity (i.e. with stable thermal gradient) is numerically studied. A Rayleigh number based criterion is developed, which determines the conditions favorable for freckles formation. This criterion, when expressed in terms of physical properties and process parameters, yields the condition for plume formation as a function of concentration, liquid fraction, permeability, growth rate of a mushy layer and thermophysical properties. Subsequently, numerical simulations are performed for cases with initial and boundary conditions favoring freckle formation. The effects of parameters, such as cooling rate and initial concentration, on the formation and growth of freckles are investigated. It was found that a high cooling rate produced larger and more defined channels which are retained for a longer durations. Similarly, a lower initial concentration of solute resulted in fewer but more pronounced channels. The number and size of channels are also found to be related to the mushy zone thickness. The trends predicted with regard to the variation of number of channels with time under different process conditions are in accordance with the experimental observations reported in the literature.

Two acceptor containing polyimides PDI and NDI carrying pyromellitic diimide units and 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxy diimide units, respectively, along with hexa(oxyethylene) (EO6) segments as linkers, were prepared from the corresponding dianhydrides and diamines. These polyimides were made to fold by interaction with specifically designed folding agents containing a dialkoxynaphtha-lene (DAN) donor linked to a carboxylic acid group. The alkali-metal counter-ion of the donor carboxylic acid upon complexation with the EO6 segment brings the DAN unit in the right location to induce a charge-transfer complex formation with acceptor units in the polymer backbone. This two-point interaction between the folding agent and the polymer backbone leads to a folding of the polymer chain, which was readily monitored by NMR titrations. The effect of various parameters, such as structures of the folding agent and polymer, and the solvent composition, on the folding propensities of the polymer was studied.

Designed octapeptides Boc-Leu-Val-Val-Aib-(D)Xxx-Leu- Val-Val-OMe ((D)Xxx = (D)Ala, 3a; (D)Val, 3c and (D)Pro, 5a) and Boc-Leu-Phe-Val-Aib-DAla-Leu-Phe-Val-OMe (3b) have been investigated to construct models of a stable type I' beta-turn nucleated hairpin and to generate systems for investigating helix-hairpin conformational transitions. Peptide 5a, which contains a central Aib-(D)Pro segment, is shown to adopt a stable type I' beta-turn nucleated hairpin structure, stabilized by four cross-strand hydrogen bonds. The stability of the structure in diverse solvents is established by the observation of all diagnostic NOEs expected in a beta-hairpin conformation. Replacement of (D)Pro5 by (D)Ala/(D)Val (3a-c) results in sequences that form beta-hairpins in hydrogen bonding solvents like CD3OH and DMSO-d(6). However, in CDCl3 evidence for population of helical conformations is obtained. Peptide 6b (Boc-Leu-Phe-Val-Aib-Aib-Leu-Phe-Val-OMe), which contains a centrally positioned Aib-Aib segment, provides a clear example of a system, which exhibits a helical conformation in CDCl3 and a significant population of both helices and hairpins in CD3OH and DMSO-d(6). The coexistence of multiple conformations is established by the simultaneous observation of diagnostic NOEs. Control over stereochemistry of the central beta-turn permits generation of models for robust beta-hairpins and also for the construction of systems that may be used to probe helix-hairpin conformational transitions. In the present work, a numerical study is performed to predict the effect of process parameters on transport phenomena during solidification of aluminium alloy A356 in the presence of electromagnetic stirring. A set of single-phase governing equations of mass, momentum, energy and species conservation is used to represent the solidification process and the associated fluid flow, heat and mass transfer. In the model, the electromagnetic forces are incorporated using an analytical solution of Maxwell equation in the momentum conservation equations and the slurry rheology during solidification is represented using an experimentally determined variable viscosity function. Finally, the set of governing equations is solved for various process conditions using a pressure based finite volume technique, along with an enthalpy based phase change algorithm. In present work, the effect of stirring intensity and cooling rate are considered. It is found that increasing stirring intensity results in increase of slurry velocity and corresponding increase in the fraction of solid in the slurry. In addition, the increasing stirring intensity results uniform distribution of species and fraction of solid in the slurry. It is also found from the simulation that the distribution of solid fraction and species is dependent on cooling rate conditions. At low cooling rate, the fragmentation of dendrites from the solid/liquid interface is more.

Assembly consisting of cast and wrought aluminum alloys has wide spread application in defense and aero space industries. For the efficacious use of the transition joints, the weld should have adequate strength and formability. In the present investigation, A356 and 6061 aluminum alloys were friction stir welded under tool rotational speed of 1000-1400 rpm and traversing speed of 80-240 mm/min, keeping other parameters same. The variable process window is responsible for the change in total heat input and cooling rate during welding. Structural characterization of the bonded assemblies exhibits recovery-recrystallization in the stirring zone and breaking of coarse eutectic network of Al-Si. Dispersion of fine Si rich particles, refinement of 6061 grain size, low residual stress level and high defect density within weld nugget contribute towards the improvement in bond strength. Lower will be the tool rotational and traversing speed, more dominant will be the above phenomena. Therefore, the joint fabricated using lowest tool traversing and rotational speed, exhibits substantial improvement in bond strength (similar to 98% of that of 6061 alloy), which is also maximum with respect to others.
