We demonstrate the activity of Ce0.78Sn0.2Pt0.02O2-delta, a new catalyst, towards water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. Over 99.5% CO conversion to H-2 is observed at 300 +/- 25 degrees C. Based on different characterization techniques we found that the present catalyst is resistant to deactivation due to carbonate formation and sintering of Pt on the surface when subjected to longer duration of reaction conditions. The catalyst does not require any pre-treatment or activation between start-up/shut-down reaction operations. Formation of side products such as methane, methanol, formaldehyde, coke etc. was not observed under the WGS reaction conditions indicating the high selectivity of the catalyst for H-2. Temperature programmed reduction of the catalyst in hydrogen (H-2-TPR) shows reversible reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+, Sn4+ to Sn2+ and Pt4+ to Pt-0 oxidation state with oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of 3500 mu mol g(-1) at 80 degrees C. Such high value of OSC indicates the presence of highly activated lattice oxygen. CO oxidation in presence of stoichiometric O-2 shows 100% conversion to CO2 at room temperature. The catalyst also exhibits 100% selectivity for CO2 at room temperature towards preferential oxidation (PROX) of residual CO in presence of excess hydrogen in the feed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Escherichia coli RNA polymerase is a multi-subunit enzyme containing alpha(2)beta beta'omega sigma, which transcribes DNA template to intermediate RNA product in a sequence specific manner. Although most of the subunits are essential for its function, the smallest subunit omega (average molecular mass similar to 10,105 Da) can be deleted without affecting bacterial growth. Creating a mutant of the omega subunit can aid in improving the understanding of its role. Sequencing of rpoZ gene that codes for omega subunit from a mutant variant suggested a substitution mutation at position 60 of the protein: asparagine (N) -> aspartic acid (D). This mutation was verified at the protein level by following a typical mass spectrometry (MS) based bottom-up proteomic approach. Characterization of in-gel trypsin digested samples by reverse phase liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to electrospray ionization (ESI)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) enabled in ascertaining this mutation. Electron transfer dissociation (ETD) of triply charged (M + 3H)(3+)] tryptic peptides (residues 53-67]), EIEEGLINNQILDVR from wild-type and EIEEGLIDNQILDVR from mutant, facilitated in unambiguously determining the site of mutation at residue 60.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have been deposited on glass substrates via sol-gel technique using zinc acetate dihydrate as precursor by spin coating of the sol at 2000 rpm. Effects of annealing temperature on optical, structural and photo luminescence properties of the deposited ZnO films have been investigated. The phase transition from amorphous to polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure was observed at an annealing temperature of 400 degrees C. An average transmittance of 87% in the visible region has been obtained at room temperature. The optical transmittance has slightly increased with increase of annealing temperature. The band gap energy was estimated by Tauc's method and found to be 3.22 eV at room temperature. The optical band gap energy has decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity increased with annealing temperature up to 200 degrees C and decreased at 300 degrees C. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The integral diaphragm pressure transducers machined out of precipitation hardened martensite stainless steel (APX4) are widely used for propellant pressure measurements in space applications. These transducers are expected to exhibit dimensional stability and linearity for their entire useful life. These vital factors are very critical for the reliable performance and dependability of the pressure transducers. However, these transducers invariably develop internal stresses during various stages of machining. These stresses have an adverse effect on the performance of the transducers causing deviation from linearity. In order to eliminate these possibilities, it was planned to cryotreat the machined transducers to improve both the long-term linearity and dimensional stability. To study these effects, an experimental cryotreatment unit was designed and developed based on the concept of indirect cooling using the concept of cold nitrogen gas forced closed loop convection currents. The system has the capability of cryotreating large number of samples for varied rates of cooling, soaking and warm-up. After obtaining the initial levels of residual stress and retained austenite using X-ray diffraction techniques, the pressure transducers were cryotreated at 98 K for 36 h. Immediately after cryotreatment, the transducers were tempered at 510 degrees C for 3 h in vacuum furnace. Results after cryo treatment clearly indicated significant reduction in residual stress levels and conversion of retained austenite to martensite. These changes have brought in improvements in long term zero drift and dimensional stability. The cryotreated pressure transducers have been incorporated for actual space applications. Instability of laminated curved composite beams made of repeated sublaminate construction is studied using finite element method. In repeated sublaminate construction, a full laminate is obtained by repeating a basic sublaminate which has a smaller number of plies. This paper deals with the determination of optimum lay-up for buckling by ranking of such composite curved beams (which may be solid or sandwich). For this purpose, use is made of a two-noded, 16 degress of freedom curved composite beam finite element. The displacements u, v, w of the element reference axis are expressed in terms of one-dimensional first-order Hermite interpolation polynomials, and line member assumptions are invoked in formulation of the elastic stiffness matrix and geometric stiffness matrix. The nonlinear expressions for the strains, occurring in beams subjected to axial, flexural and torsional loads, are incorporated in a general instability analysis. The computer program developed has been used, after extensive checking for correctness, to obtain optimum orientation scheme of the plies in the sublaminate so as to achieve maximum buckling load for typical curved solid/sandwich composite beams.

Nanocrystalline Ce1-xFexO2-delta (0 <= x <= 0.45) and Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O2-delta of similar to 4 nm sizes were synthesized by a sonochemical method using diethyletriamine (DETA) as a complexing agent. Compounds were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Ce1-xFexO2-delta (0 <= x <= 0.45) and Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O2-delta crystallize in fluorite structure where Fe is in +3, Ce is in +4 and Pd is in +2 oxidation state. Due to substitution of smaller Fe3+ ion in CeO2, lattice oxygen is activated and 33% Fe substituted CeO2 i.e. Ce0.67Fe0.33O1.835 reversibly releases 0.31O] up to 600 degrees C which is higher or comparable to the oxygen storage capacity of CeO2-ZrO2 based solid solutions (Catal. Today 2002, 74, 225-234). Due to interaction of redox potentials of Pd2+/0(0.89 V) and Fe3+/2+ (0.77 V) with Ce4+/3+ (1.61 V), Pd ion accelerates the electron transfer from Fe2+ to Ce4+ in Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O1.815, making it a high oxygen storage material as well as a highly active catalyst for CO oxidation and water gas shift reaction. The activation energy for CO oxidation with Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O1.815 is found to be as low as 38 kJ mol(-1). Ce0.67Fe0.33O1.835 and Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O1.815 have also shown high activity for the water gas shift reaction. CO conversion to CO2 is 100% H-2 specific with these catalysts and conversion rate was found to be as high 27.2 mu moles g(-1) s(-1) and the activation energy was found to be 46.4 kJ mol(-1) for Ce0.65Fe0.33Pd0.02O1.815.

The photoluminescence (PL) properties of nano- and micro-crystalline Hg1-xCdxTe (x approximate to 0.8) grown by the solvothermal method have been studied over the temperature range 10-300 K. The emission spectra of the samples excited with 514.5 nm Ar+ laser consist of five prominent bands around 0.56, 0.60, 0.69, 0.78 and 0.92 eV. The entire PL band in this NIR region is attributed to the luminescence from defect centers. The features like temperature independent peak energy and quite sensitive PL intensity, which has a maximum around 50 K is illustrated by the configuration coordinate model. After 50 K, the luminescence shows a thermal quenching behavior that is usually exhibited by amorphous semiconductors, indicating that the defects are related to the compositional disorder. The method of structured programming or program development using a top-down, stepwise refinement technique provides a systematic approach for the development of programs of considerable complexity. The aim of this paper is to present the philosophy of structured programming through a case study of a nonnumeric programming task. The problem of converting a well-formed formula in first-order logic into prenex normal form is considered. The program has been coded in the programming language PASCAL and implemented on a DEC-10 system. The program has about 500 lines of code and comprises 11 procedures.

Three new aluminoborates having the composition MAl3BO7, where M = Ca,Sr or Ba, have been prepared. X-ray diffraction data indicate that all the phases are monoclinic, with close structural similarity to the meta stable aluminate, SrAl4O7. These aluminoborates are good host lattices for Eu2+ luminescence. The emission spectra show multiple bands in the blue region, corresponding to two inequivalent sites in each case, with one of them having quantum efficiency greater-than or equivalent to 75%. In the case of SrAl3BO7:Eu2+, the d–f band emission dominates at 300 K whereas at 77 K both d–f band and f–f line emissions are observed. Efficient Eu2+→Mn2+ energy transfer is observed in MAl3BO7 leading to strong green emission of Mn2+in the tetrahedral sites.aluminoborates; europium

Ultraviolet radiation has been generated by tangentially phase-matched sum-frequency mixing in biaxial L-arginine phosphate (LAP) crystal for the first time using Nd:YAG output at 1064 nm and Rh 6G dye laser output at 560 nm as the two input sources. Characterization has also been made of such a cheap, biaxial crystal for its possible use in devices for tangentially phase-matched short wavelength generation. If the crystal is of proper cut, thickness and quality so that its maximum capability can be exploited it can replace the potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) group of crystals for various applications.
