Wettability gradient surfaces play a significant role in control and manipulation of liquid drops. The present work deals with the analysis of water drops impacting onto the junction line between hydrophobic texture and hydrophilic smooth portions of a dual-textured substrate made using stainless steel material. The hydrophobic textured portion of the substrate comprised of unidirectional parallel groove-like and pillar-like structures of uniform dimensions. A high-speed video camera recorded the spreading and receding dynamics of impacting drops. The drop impact dynamics during the early inertia driven impact regime remains unaffected by the dual-texture feature of the substrate. A larger retraction speed of drop liquid observed on the hydrophobic portion of the substrate during the impact of low velocity drops makes the drop liquid on the higher wettability portion to advance further (secondary drop spreading). The net horizontal drop velocity towards the hydrophilic portion of the dual-textured substrate decreases with increasing drop impact velocity. The available experimental results suggest that the movement of bulk drop liquid away from the impact point during drop impact on the dual-textured substrate is larger for the impact of low inertia drops. Coordination-driven self-assembly of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (tma; 1) and oxalato-bridged p-cymeneruthenium(II) building block Ru-2(mu-eta(4)-C2O4)(MeOH)(2)(eta(6)-p-cymene)(2)](O3SCF3)(2) (2) affords an unusual octanuclear incomplete prism Ru-8(eta(6)-p-cymene)(8)(tma)(2)(mu-eta(4)-C2O4)(2)(OMe)(4)](O3SCF3)( 2) (3), which exhibits a remarkable shape-selective binding affinity for neutral phenolic compounds via hydrogen-bonding interactions (p-cymene = p-(PrC6H4Me)-Pr-i). Such a binding was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis using 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene as an analyte.

The development of crystallographic texture and the change in the grain size during warm rolling (300 deg K) and their effect on the tensile yield strength at 77 and 300 deg K are studied in 99.9% pure Cd. Both longitudinal and transverse specimens are tested. The yield strength obeys the Hall--Petch relation. The Hall--Petch slope, k, is lower and the intercept sigma o is higher in the warm worked material in comparison with the corresponding values for annealed Cd. The differences are attributed to the change in 1013 < and 0001 textures that are developed during warm rolling.26 refs.--AA

Local texture and microstructure was investigated to study the deformation mechanisms during equal channel angular extrusion of a high purity nickel single crystal of initial cube orientation. A detailed texture and microstructure analysis by various diffraction techniques revealed the complexity of the deformation patterns in different locations of the billet. A modeling approach, taking into account slip system activity, was used to interpret the development of this heterogeneous deformation.

The machine replication of human reading has been the subject of intensive research for more than three decades. A large number of research papers and reports have already been published on this topic. Many commercial establishments have manufactured recognizers of varying capabilities. Handheld, desk-top, medium-size and large systems costing as high as half a million dollars are available, and are in use for various applications. However, the ultimate goal of developing a reading machine having the same reading capabilities of humans still remains unachieved. So, there still is a great gap between human reading and machine reading capabilities, and a great amount of further effort is required to narrow-down this gap, if not bridge it. This review is organized into six major sections covering a general overview (an introduction), applications of character recognition techniques, methodologies in character recognition, research work in character recognition, some practical OCRs and the conclusions.

In the present investigation, experiments were conducted by unidirectional sliding of pins made of FCC metals (Pb, Al, and Cu) with significantly different hardness values against the steel plates of various surface textures and roughness using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding apparatus in ambient conditions under both the dry and lubricated conditions. For a given material pair, it was observed that transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction along with its two components, namely adhesion and plowing, are controlled by the surface texture of the harder mating surfaces and are less dependent of surface roughness (R (a)) of the harder mating surfaces. The effect of surface texture on the friction was attributed to the variation of the plowing component of friction for different surfaces. It was also observed that the variation of plowing friction as a function of hardness depends on surface textures. More specifically, the plowing friction varies with hardness of the soft materials for a given type of surface texture and it is independent of hardness of soft materials for other type of surface texture. These variations could be attributed to the extent of plane strain conditions taking place at the asperity level during sliding. It was also observed that among the surface roughness parameters, the mean slope of the profile, Delta (a), correlated best with the friction. Furthermore, dimensionless quantifiable roughness parameters were formulated to describe the degree of plowing taking place at the asperity level.

The present work describes the evolution of a strong, single-component rotated-Brass ((1 1 0) < 5 5 6 >) texture in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloy by an uneven hot cross-rolling with frequent interpass annealing. This texture development is unique because hot rolling of aluminum alloys results in orientation distribution along the ``beta-fibre''. It has been demonstrated that the deformation by cross-rolling of a partially recrystallized grain structure having rotated-Cube and Goss orientations, and the recrystallization resistance of near-Brass-oriented elongated grains play a critical role in development of this texture. Sesbania mosaic virus (SeMV) is a single strand positive-sense RNA plant virus that belongs to the genus Sobemovirus. The mechanism of cell-to-cell movement in sobemoviruses has not been well studied. With a view to identify the viral encoded ancillary proteins of SeMV that may assist in cell-to-cell movement of the virus, all the proteins encoded by SeMV genome were cloned into yeast Matchmaker system 3 and interaction studies were performed. Two proteins namely, viral protein genome linked (VPg) and a 10-kDa protein (P10) c v gft encoded by OFR 2a, were identified as possible interacting partners in addition to the viral coat protein (CP). Further characterization of these interactions revealed that the movement protein (MP) recognizes cognate RNA through interaction with VPg, which is covalently linked to the 59 end of the RNA. Analysis of the deletion mutants delineated the domains of MP involved in the interaction with VPg and P10. This study implicates for the first time that VPg might play an important role in specific recognition of viral genome by MP in SeMV and shed light on the possible role of P10 in the viral movement.
Texture evolution and operative mechanisms during large-strain deformation of nanocrystalline nickel
Resumo:
The large-strain deformation of nanocrystalline nickel was investigated at room temperature and cryogenic (liquid N-2) temperature. Deformation mechanisms ranging from grain boundary sliding to slip, operate due to a wide distribution of grain sizes. These mechanisms leave their finger print in the deformation texture evolution during rolling of nanocrystalline nickel. The occurrence and severance of different mechanisms is understood by a thorough characterization of the deformed samples using X-ray diffraction, X-ray texture measurements, electron back-scattered diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Crystal plasticity-based viscoplastic self-consistent simulations were used to further substantiate the experimental observations. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of deformation behavior of nanocrystalline nickel, which is characterized by simultaneous operation of dislocation-dominated and grain boundary-mediated mechanisms, has been developed.

Texture development in commercially pure titanium during equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) through Routes A, Be and C has been studied up to three passes at 400 C. Textures were measured using X-ray diffraction, while the microstructural analyses were performed using electron back-scattered diffraction as well as transmission electron microscopy. Occurrences of dynamic restoration processes (recovery and recrystallization) were clearly noticed at all levels of deformations. Finally, the textures were simulated using a viscoplastic polycrystal self-consistent (VPSC) model. Simulations were performed incorporating basal, prismatic and pyramidal slip systems as well as tensile and compressive twinning. The simulated textures corroborate well with experimental textures in spite of the occurrence of dynamic restoration processes. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The effect of growth texture on the magnetostriction of ternary Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.95 was studied by conducting unidirectional solidification experiments using a zoning set-up. Detailed texture evolutions were studied using X-ray diffraction on samples obtained by varying growth rates from 18 to 72 cm/h, under a temperature gradient of 100 degrees C/cm. The estimated texture co-efficient and pole figures of the samples indicate that during the onset of the solidification, < 110 > and < 331 >/'rotated < 110 >' texture components nucleate and grow in all the samples. However, as the solidification progresses, < 112 > texture component becomes dominant at higher growth rate. This results in an improvement of magnetostriction from 1000 to 1300 microstrains for samples grown at growth rates of 18 and 72 cm/h respectively. The transition of preferred growth direction occurs through intermediate orientations < 123 >. An attempt has been made in this paper to explain the occurrence of different growth texture by considering the stability of growing interface, its planar packing fraction and atomic stacking sequence of several low index planes. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental pollutants as well as well-known carcinogens. Therefore, it is important to develop an effective receptor for the detection and quantification of such molecules in solution. In view of this, a 1,3-dinaphthalimide derivative of calix4]arene (L) has been synthesized and characterized, and the structure has been established by single crystal XRD. In the crystal lattice, intermolecular arm-to-arm pi center dot center dot center dot pi overlap dominates and thus L becomes a promising receptor for providing interactions with the aromatic species in solution, which can be monitored by following the changes that occur in its fluorescence and absorption spectra. On the basis of the solution studies carried out with about 17 derivatives of the aromatic guest molecular systems, it may be concluded that the changes that occur in the fluorescence intensity seem to be proportional to the number of aromatic rings present and thus proportional to the extent of pi center dot center dot center dot pi interaction present between the naphthalimide moieties and the aromatic portion of the guest molecule. Though the nonaromatic portion of the guest species affects the fluorescence quenching, the trend is still based on the number of rings present in these. Four guest aldehydes are bound to L with K-ass of 2000-6000 M-1 and their minimum detection limit is in the range of 8-35 mu M. The crystal structure of a naphthaldehyde complex, L.2b, exhibits intermolecular arm-to-arm as well as arm-to-naphthaldehyde pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. Molecular dynamics studies of L carried out in the presence of aromatic aldehydes under vacuum as well as in acetonitrile resulted in exhibiting interactions observed in the solid state and hence the changes observed in the fluorescence and absorption spectra are attributable for such interactions. Complex formation has also been delineated through ESI MS studies. Thus L is a promising receptor that can recognize PAHs by providing spectral changes proportional to the aromatic conjugation of the guest and the extent of aromatic pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions present between L and the guest.

Cylindrical specimens of textured commercial pure alpha-titanium plate, cut with the cylinder axis along the rolling direction for one set of experiments and in the long transverse direction for the other set, were compressed at strain rates in the range of 0.001 to 100 s-1 and temperatures in the range of 25-degrees-C to 400-degrees-C. At strain rates greater-than-or-equal-to 1 s-1, both sets of specimens exhibited adiabatic shear bands, but the intensity of shear bands was found to be higher in the rolling direction specimens than in the long transverse direction specimens. At strain rates -0.1 s-1, the material deformed in a microstructurally inhomogeneous fashion. For the rolling direction specimens, cracking was observed at 100-degrees-C and at strain rates -0.1 s-1. This is attributed to dynamic strain aging. Such cracking was not observed in the long transverse specimens. The differences in the intensity of adiabatic shear bands and that of dynamic strain aging between the two sets of test specimens are attributed to the strong crystallographic texture present in these plates.

Owing to their high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, titanium (Ti) and its alloys, especially (alpha+beta) alloys like Ti-6Al-4V is the backbone materials for aerospace, energy, and chemical industries. Trace boron addition (similar to 0.1 wt. %) to the alloy Ti-6Al-4V produces a reduction in as-cast grain size by roughly an order of magnitude resulting in enhanced ductility, higher stiffness, strength and good fracture resistance. Boron addition could also affect the evolution of texture and microstructure in the material. The solidification microstructures of Boron free as well as Boron containing Ti-6Al-4V are found to be almost homogeneous from periphery towards the center of as-cast ingot in terms of both alpha-colony size and distribution. Boron addition substantially reduces alpha-colony size (similar to 50-80 mu m). A gradual change in alpha texture from periphery towards the center has been observed with orientations close to specific texture components suggesting the formation of texture zones. The mechanism of texture evolution can be visualized as a result of variant selection during solidification through (alpha+beta) phase field.
