The stability fields of various sulfide phases that form on Fe-Cr, Fe-Ni, Ni-Cr, and Fe-Cr-Ni alloys have been developed as a function of temperature and the partial pressure of sulfur. The calculated stability fields in the ternary A-B-S system are displayed on plots of log \textpS2 pS2 vs. the conjugate extensive variable (nA/nA–nB), which provides a better framework for following the sulfidation of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys at high temperatures. Experimental and estimated thermodynamic data were used in developing the sulfur potential diagrams. Current models and correlations were employed to estimate the unknown thermodynamic behavior of solid solutions of sulfides and to supplement the incomplete phase-diagram data of geophysical literature. These constructed stability field diagrams are in excellent agreement with the sulfide phases and compositions determined experimentally during the sulfidation of SAE 310 stainless steel. The sulfur potential plots appear to be very useful in predicting and correlating the sulfidation of commercial alloys.

The phase diagram of the Cr-W-O system at 1000° C was established by metallographic and X-ray identification of the phases present after equilibration in evacuated silica capsules. Two ternary oxide phases, CrWO4 and Cr2WO6 were detected. The oxygen potential over the three-phase mixtures, W+Cr2O3 s+CrWO4, WO2.90+CrWO4+Cr2WO6 and Cr2O3+CrWO4+Cr2WO6, were measured by solid state cells incorporating Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 electrolyte and Ni+NiO reference electrode. The Gibbs' energies of formation of the two ternary phases can be represented by the following equations

Ternary phase relations in the Co-Cr-S system at 1223 K were determined using microprobe analysis of quenched samples. The results are consistent with the data available on the binary systems. A complete solid solution exists between cobalt monosulfide and chromium monosulfide. The CoCr2S4 thiospinel is the only ternary compound formed. A sulfur potential diagram was constructed for the region involving equilibrium between alloy and monosulfide based on thermodynamic data on the Co-Cr, Co-S, and Cr-S binary systems and the ternary information obtained in this study. The sulfidation behavior of Co-Cr alloys reported in the literature is discussed in light of the sulfur potential diagram.

The tie-lines delineating equilibria between CoO-NiO and Co-Ni solid solutions in the ternary Co-Ni-O system at 1373 K have been determined by electron microprobe andedax point count analysis of the oxide phase equilibrated with the alloy. The oxygen potentials corresponding to the tie-line compositions have been measured using a solid oxide galvanic cell with calcia-stabilized zirconia electrolyte and Ni + NiO reference electrode. Activities in the metallic and oxide solid solution have been derived using a new Gibbs-Duhem integration technique. Both phases exhibit small positive deviations from ideality; the values ofG E/X 1 X 2 are 2640 J mol−1 for the metallic phase and 2870 J mol−1 for the oxide solid solution.

Phase relations in the systems SrO-Y2O3-CuO-O2 and CaO-Y2O3-CuO-O2 at 1173 K were established by equilibrating different compositions in flowing oxygen gas at a pressure of 1.01 × 105 Pa. The quenched samples were examined by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), and electron spin resonance (ESR). In the system SrO-Y2O3-CuO-O2, except for the limited substitution of Y3+ for Sr2+ ions in the ternary oxide Sr14Cu24O41, no new quaternary phase was found to be stable. The compositions corresponding to the solid solution Sr14−xYxCu24O41 and the compound SrCuO2+δ lie above the plane containing SrO, Y2O3, and CuO,displaced towards the oxygen apex. However, in the system CaO-Y203-CuO-O2 at 1173 K, all the condensed phases lie on the plane containing CaO, Y203, and CuO, and a new quaternary oxide YCa2Cu306.s is present. The quaternary phase has a composition that lies at the center of the nonstoichiometric field of the analogous phase YBa2Cu307_~ in the BaO-Y203-CuO-O2 system. The compound YCa2Cu306.s has the tetragonal structure and does not become superconducting at low temperature. Surprisingly, phase relations in the three systems CaO-Y203-CuO-O2, SrO-Y203-CuO-O2, and BaO-Y203-CuO-O2 are found to be quite different.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Nd-Pd-O at 1350 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 13 different compositions and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive analysis of x-rays. The binary oxides PdO and NdO were not stable at 1350 K. Two ternary oxides Nd4PdO7 and Nd2Pd2O5 were identified. Solid and liquid alloys, as well as the intermetallics NdPd3 and NdPd5, were found to be in equilibrium with Nd2O3. Based on the phase relations, three solidstate cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of PdO and the two ternary oxides. An advanced version of the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode was used for high-temperature thermodynamic measurements. The function of the buffer electrode, placed between reference and working electrodes, was to absorb the electrochemical flux of the mobile species through the solid electrolyte caused by trace electronic conductivity. The buffer electrode prevented polarization of the measuring electrode and ensured accurate data. Yttria-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MP a as the reference electrode. Electromotive force measurements, conducted from 950 to 1425 K, indicated the presence of a third ternary oxide Nd2PdO4, stable below 1135 (±10) K. Additional cells were designed to study this compound. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of PdO (†f G 0) was measured from 775 to 1125 Kusing two separate cell designs against the primary reference standard for oxygen chemical potential. Based on the thermodynamic information, chemical potential diagrams for the system Nd-Pd-O were also developed.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for (silver + rhodium + oxygen) at T = 1173 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing twelve different compositions, and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy (s.e.m.), X-ray diffraction (x.r.d.), and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (e.d.x.), Only one ternary oxide, AgRhO2, was found to be stable and a three phase region involving Ag, AgRhO2 and Rh2O3 was identified. The thermodynamic properties of AgRhO2 were measured using a galvanic cell in the temperature range 980 K to 1320 K. Yttria-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa was used as the reference electrode. The Gibbs free energy of formation of the ternary oxide from the elements, ΔfGo (AgRhO2), can be represented by two linear equations that join at the melting temperature of silver. In the temperature range 980 K to 1235 K, ΔfGo(AgRhO2)/(J . mol-1) = -249080 + 179.08 T/K (±120). Above the melting temperature of silver, in the temperature range 1235 K to 1320 K, ΔfGo(AgRhO2)/(J . mol-1) = -260400 + 188.24 T/K (±95). The thermodynamic properties of AgRhO2 at T = 298.15 K were evaluated from the high temperature data. The chemical potential diagram for (silver + rhodium + oxygen) at T = 1200 K was also computed on the basis of the results of this study.

Phase relations in the system Cu-Eu-O have been determined by equilibrating samples of different average composition at 1200 K and by phase analysis after quenching using optical microscopy (OM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX). The equilibration experiments were conducted in evacuated ampoules and under flowing inert gas and pure oxygen. The Cu-Eu alloys were found to be in equilibrium with EuO. The higher oxides of europium, Eu3O4 and Eu2O3, coexist with metallic copper. Two ternary oxides CuEu2O4 and CuEuO2 were found to be stable. The ternary oxide CuEuO2, with copper in the monovalent state, can coexist with Cu, Cu2O, Eu2O3 and CuEu2O4 in different phase fields. The compound CuEu2O4 can be in equilibrium with Cu2O, CuO, CuEuO2, Eu2O3, and O2 gas under different conditions at 1200 K. Thermodynamic properties of the ternary oxides were determined using three solid-state cells based on yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte in the temperature range from 875 to 1250 K. The cells essentially measure the oxygen chemical potential in the three-phase fields: Cu+Eu2O3+CuEuO2, Cu2O+CuEuO2+CuEu2O4, and Eu2O3+CuEuO2+CuEu2O4. The thermodynamic properties of the ternary oxides can be represented by the equations: $\begin{gathered} {\raise0.5ex\hbox{$Couldn't find \end for begin{gathered} Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) studies in Ar+O2 mixtures confirmed the results from emf measurements. An isothermal section of the system Al2O3-CaO-CoO at 1500 K has been established by equilibrating 22 samples of different compositions at high temperature and phase identification by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy after quenching to room temperature. Only one quaternary oxide, Ca3CoAl4O10, was identified inside the ternary triangle. Based on the phase relations, a solid-state electrochemical cell was designed to measure the Gibbs energy of formation of Ca3CoAl4O10 in the temperature range from 1150 to 1500 K. Calcia-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and a mixture of Co + CoO as the reference electrode. The cell can be represented as: ( - )\textPt,\textCaAl 2 \textO 4 + \textCa 1 2 \textAl 1 4 \textO 3 3 + \textCa 3 \textCoAl 4 \textO 10 + \textCo//(CaO)ZrO 2 \text// \textCoO + \textCo,\text Pt ( + ). (−)PtCaAl2O4+Ca12Al14O33+Ca3CoAl4O10+Co//(CaO)ZrO2//CoO+Co Pt (+) From the emf of the cell, the standard Gibbs energy change for the Ca3CoAl4O10 formation reaction, CoO + 3/5CaAl2O4 + 1/5Ca12Al14O33 → Ca3CoAl4O10, is obtained as a function of temperature: \Updelta Gr\texto Unknown control sequence '\Updelta'/J mol−1 (±50) = −2673 + 0.289 (T/K). The standard Gibbs energy of formation of Ca3CoAl4O10 from its component binary oxides, Al2O3, CaO, and CoO is derived as a function of temperature. The standard entropy and enthalpy of formation of Ca3CoAl4O10 at 298.15 K are evaluated. Chemical potential diagrams for the system Al2O3-CaO-CoO at 1500 K are presented based on the results of this study and auxiliary information from the literature.

Transparent colorless glasses in the ternary BaOTiO2B2O3 system were fabricated via conventional melt-quenching technique. The glasses with certain molar concentrations of BaO and TiO2 on heat treatment at appropriate temperatures yielded nanocrystalline phase of TiO2 associated with the crystallite size in the 515 nm range. Nanocrystallized glasses exhibited high refractive index (n = 2.15) measured at lambda = 543 nm. These glasses were found to be hydrophobic in nature associated with the contact angle of 90 degrees. These high-index glass nanocrystal composites would be of potential interest for optical device applications.

Phase equilibria in the system Tm-Rh-O at 1200 K is established by isothermal equilibration of selected compositions and phase identification after quenching to room temperature. Six intermetallic phases (Tm3Rh, Tm7Rh3, Tm5Rh3, Tm3Rh2, TmRh, TmRh2 +/-delta) and a ternary oxide TmRhO3 are identified. Based on experimentally determined phase relations, a solid-state electrochemical cell is devised to measure the standard free energy of formation of orthorhombic perovskite TmRhO3 from cubic Tm2O3 and beta-Rh2O3 in the temperature range from (900 to 1300) K. The results can be summarized as: Delta G(f,ox)(o) +/- 104/J.mol(-1) = -46474 + 3.925(T/K). Invoking the Neumann-Kopp rule, the standard enthalpy of formation of TmRhO3 from its constituent elements at 298.15 K is estimated as -1193.89 (+/- 2.86) kJ.mol(-1). The standard entropy of TmRhO3 at 298.15 K is evaluated as 103.8 (+/- 1.6) J.mol(-1).K-1. The oxygen potential-composition diagram and three-dimensional chemical potential diagram at 1200 K and temperature-composition diagrams at constant partial pressures of oxygen are computed from thermodynamic data. The compound TmRhO3 decomposes at 1688 (+/- 2) K in pure oxygen and at 1583 (+/- 2) K in air at standard pressure.

Thermodynamic properties of GdRhO3 are investigated in the temperature range from 900 to 1300 K by employing a solid-state electrochemical cell, incorporating calcia-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte. The standard Gibbs free energy of formation of GdRhO3 from component binary oxide Gd2O3 with C-rare earth structure and Rh2O3 with orthorhombic structure can be expressed as; Delta G(f(ox))(o)(+/- 60)/J mol(-1) = -56603 + 3.78(T/K) Based on the thermodynamic information on GdRhO3 from experiment and auxiliary data for binary oxides from the literature and estimated properties of Gd-Rh alloys, phase relations are computed for the system Gd-Rh-O at 1273 K. Gibbs free energies for intermetallic phases in the binary Gd-Rh are evaluated using calorimetric data available in the literature for two compositions and Miedema's model, consistent with the binary phase diagram. Isothermal section of the ternary phase diagram, oxygen potential-composition diagram and a 3-D chemical potential diagram for the system Gd-Rh-O at 1273 K are developed. Phase relations in the ternary Gd-Rh-O are also computed as a function of temperature at constant oxygen partial pressures. The ternary oxide, GdRhO3 decomposes to Gd2O3 with B-rare earth structure, metallic Rh and O-2 at 1759(+/- 2) K in pure O-2 and 1649(+/- 2) K in air at a total pressure P-0 -0.1 MPa. Phase relations in the system Nb-Rh-O at 1223 K were investigated by isothermal equilibration of eleven compositions and analysis of quenched samples using OM, XRD, SEM and EDS. The oxide phase in equilibrium with the alloy changes progressively from NbO to NbO2, NbO2.422 and Nb2O5-x with increasing Rh. Only one ternary oxide NbRhO4 with tetragonal structure (a=0.4708 nm and c=0.3017 nm) was detected. It coexists with Rh and Nb2O5. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of NbRhO4 from its component binary oxides measured using a solid-state electrochemical cell can be represented by the equation; Delta G(f,ox)(o)(J/mol) = -38,350 + 5.818 x T(+/- 96) Constructed on the basis of thermodynamic information of the various alloy and oxide phases are oxygen potential diagram for the system Nb-Rh-O at 1223 K and temperature-composition diagrams at constant partial pressures of oxygen.
