Raman spectra of cyclohexane 1,4-dione (I), in chloroform, benzene and water solutions have been recorded. Temperature effect on the spectrum has been studied. The IR spectra of I and its octadeutero analogue in the solid state have also been studied. The spectra have been found on the basis of selection rules applicable for Raman and IR spectra, to be consistent with a single conformer of C2 symmetry. Plausible causes of conformational preference have been discussed.

A study has been made of the stereochemistry of three of the four possible configurational isomers of trimethyl 1-methylcyclohexane-1,2,3-tricarboxylate. Two of the isomers undergo highly stereoselective methylation at the 3-position; the third cannot be methylated under similar conditions. Conformations have been suggested for these three isomers on the basis of n.m.r. results. It is thought that axial ester groups at the 1-position in the first two solvate the axial protons at the 3-position and facilitate their removal by trityl anion, while in the third, which has an axial methyl at the 1-position, the effect is not possible and the anion is not formed. The role of A(1.3) strain in causing the high stereoselectivity and position-specificity in the two cases where alkylation does take place and the reasons for slow inversion at the anion centre at position 3 in one of them are discussed.

Surface topography has been known to play an important role in the friction and transfer layer formation during sliding. In the present investigation, EN8 steel flats were ground to attain different surface roughness with unidirectional grinding marks. Pure Mg pins were scratched on these surfaces using an Inclined Scratch Tester to study the influence of directionality of surface grinding marks on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. Grinding angle (i.e., the angle between direction of scratch and grinding marks) was varied between 0 degrees and 90 degrees during the tests. Experiments were conducted under both dry and lubricated conditions. Scanning electron micrographs of the contact surfaces of pins and flats were used to reveal the surface features that included the morphology of the transfer layer. It was observed that the average coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation depend primarily on the directionality of the grinding marks but were independent of surface roughness on the harder mating surface. In addition, a stick-slip phenomenon was observed, the amplitude of which depended both on the directionality of grinding marks and the surface roughness of the harder mating surface. The grinding angle effect on the coefficient of friction, which consists of adhesion and plowing components, was attributed to the variation of plowing component of friction. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The modular formalism of Rangarajan [J. Electroanal. Chem., 55 (1974) 297] has been applied to the admittance of lipid bilayer membranes. The method leads to equations which clearly show the interrelations between the various partial processes involved in ion transport, and which allow examination of model assumptions without the need for a complete rederivation of the membrane admittance. Explicit expressions are given for both the continuum and single jump models. The former includes the ionic displacement component, important mostly at high frequencies.

In situ EXAFS investigations have been carried out on Ni/γ-Al2O3 and Cu---Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with different metal loadings, and prepared by different procedures. As-prepared Ni/γ-Al2O3 on calcination gives NiO and NiAl2O4-like phases on the surface, the proportion of the latter increasing with the increase in calcination temperature; the proportion of the NiO-like phase, on the other hand, increases with the metal loading. The reducibility of Ni/γ-Al2O3 to give metallic Ni on the surface directly depends on the proportion of the NiO-like phase present before reduction. Co-impregnating with Cu suppresses the formation of the surface aluminate and thereby favours the reduction to metallic Ni. This conclusion is clearly substantiated by our studies of bimetallic catalysts containing varying Cu/Ni ratios and also those prepared by the two-stage impregnation procedure.

Reaction of [(eta-6-p-cymene)RuCl(L star)] with AgClO4 in Me2CO gives a perchlorate complex which on subsequent treatment with PPh3, gamma-picoline or Cl- yields adducts showing that there can be retention as well as inversion of configuration at the metal centre. The (R)Ru,(S)C absolute configurations of the chiral centres in the triphenylphosphine adduct have been established by an X-ray diffraction study [HL star, (S)-alpha-methylbenzylsalicylaldimine]. The CD spectral study reveals that there is an inversion of configuration during formation of the PPh3 adduct.

Friction plays an important role in metal forming processes, and the surface texture of the die is a major factor that influences friction. In the present investigation, experiments were conducted to understand the role of surface texture of the harder die surface and load on coefficient of friction. The data analysis showed that the coefficient of friction is highly dependent on the surface texture of the die surface. Assigning different magnitude of coefficients of friction, obtained in the experiments, at different regions between the die and the workpiece, Finite element (FE) simulation of a compression test was carried out to understand the effect of friction on deformation and stress/strain-rate distribution. Simulation results revealed that, owing to the difference in coefficient of friction, there is a change in metal flow pattern. Both experimental and simulation results confirmed that the surface texture of the die surface and thus coefficient of friction directly affects the strain rate and flow pattern of the workpiece.

The ipso/cine ratio in the amination of 5-bromo-2,3-benzo- or 2-bromo-4,5-benzotropone shows a dependence upon the temperature at which the reaction is conducted, changing in favour of the ipso-product when the temperature is maintained high, ruling out an aryne-type mechanism. A comparison of independent mechanisms envisaged for the formation of the two isomeric products suggests a two-part reason: (i) at a higher reaction temperature, C-protonation, a step necessary for the formation of the cine-product, could be retarded when a direct internal mode is interfered with by a less efficient external one, and (ii) reketonisation by elimination of bromide, needed to form the ipso-product, is likely to have a high temperature coefficient enabling the rate of its formation to overtake that of the cine-product.
