The present x-ray study has been undertook in order to correlate the phase transition in sodium metavanadate NaVO3 crystal with its structural aspects. The thermal expansion behaviour of NaVO3 was studied from room temperature up to 500 C, well beyond the transition temperature.

The authors report here the first measurements of low-frequency dynamic elastic properties of a spin glass (Fe59Ni21Cr20) across the transition temperature (Tg approximately=16 K). A minimum in the sound velocity (V) and a maximum in the internal friction (Q-1) were found at temperatures close to but below Tg. The elastic data were compared with the AC susceptibility data taken at similar frequency.

A model system capable of exhibiting both superconductivity of conduction electrons and “antiferromagnetic” order of site localised electrons is studied. Coexistence of both types of order seems a possibility and the model predicts a re-entrant behaviour of the transition temperature.

The superconducting transition temperatures in Bi2Ca1−xLnxSr2Cu2O8+δ, TlCa1−xLnxSr2Cu2O6+δ, and Tl0.8Ca1−xLnxBa2Cu23O6+δ (Ln=Y or rare earth) vary with composition and show a maximum at a specific value of x or δ. This observation suggests that an optimal carrier concentration is required to attain maximum Tc in such cuprates which seem to be two‐band systems

Classical description of thermodynamic properties during glass transition has been questioned by the entropy-loss model. The uncompensated loss of entropy at the glass transition temperature and zero residual entropy is at the heart of the controversy. Both the models are critically reviewed. A unified model is presented which incorporates features of both entropy loss and residual entropy. It implies two different types of contributions to the entropy of the supercooled liquid, one of which vanishes at the transition and the other which contributes to residual entropy. Entropy gain during spontaneous relaxation of glass, and the nature of heat capacity `hysteresis' during cooling and heating through the glass transition range support the proposed model. Experiments are outlined for differentiating between the models.

The thermopower (TEP) and electrical resistance of stoichiometric Fe3O4 crystals have been measured up to pressures of 6 GPa over the temperature range of 80-160 K. The resistance decreases markedly with increasing pressure below the Verwey transition temperature TV and TV decreases linearly with increasing pressure. The magnitude of the TEP as well as the discontinuity at TV decrease with increasing pressure. The thermopower of Fe3O4 shows an interesting upswing at low temperatures (lt;100 K) which is affected significantly by pressure.

Ca-doped manganite La1-xCaxMnO3 samples with x=0.2 and 0.4 were investigated by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) as a function of temperature and preparation method. The samples exhibit characteristic resistivity change across the metal-insulator (MI) transition temperature whose shape and position depend on Ca-doping concentration and sample thermal treatment. EXAFS results evidenced an increase of nonthermal disorder at the MI transition temperature which is significantly correlated with the resistivity behavior.

The Brittle-to-ductile-transition-temperature (BDTT) of free-standing Pt-aluminide (PtAl) coating specimens, i.e. stand-alone coating specimens without any substrate, was determined by micro-tensile testing technique. The effect of Pt content, expressed in terms of the thickness of initial electro-deposited Pt layer, on the BDTT of the coating has been evaluated and an empirical correlation drawn. Increase in the electrodeposited Pt layer thickness from nil to 10 mu m was found to cause an increase in the BDTT of the coating by about 100 degrees C.

We present spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements on thin films of polymer nanocomposites consisting of gold nanoparticles embedded in poly(styrene). The temperature dependence of thickness variation is used to estimate the glass transition temperature, T(g). In these thin films we find a significant dependence of T(g) on the nature of dispersion of the embedded nanoparticles. Our work thus highlights the crucial role played by the particle polymer interface morphology in determining the glass transition in particular and thermo-mechanical properties of such nanocomposite films.

We describe here a minimal theory of tight-binding electrons moving on the square planar Cu lattice of the hole-doped cuprates and mixed quantum mechanically with their own Cooper pairs. The superconductivity occurring at the transition temperature T(c) is the long-range, d-wave symmetry phase coherence of these Cooper pairs. Fluctuations, necessarily associated with incipient long-range superconducting order, have a generic large-distance behavior near T(c). We calculate the spectral density of electrons coupled to such Cooper-pair fluctuations and show that features observed in angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on different cuprates above T(c) as a function of doping and temperature emerge naturally in this description. These include ``Fermi arcs'' with temperature-dependent length and an antinodal pseudogap, which fills up linearly as the temperature increases toward the pseudogap temperature. Our results agree quantitatively with experiment. Below T(c), the effects of nonzero superfluid density and thermal fluctuations are calculated and compared successfully with some recent ARPES experiments, especially the observed bending or deviation of the superconducting gap from the canonical d-wave form.

Transport and magnetic properties of flux-grown Nd1−xPbxMnO3 single crystals (x=0.15–0.5) are studied in the temperature range 300–77 K and 280–2 K, respectively. Magnetization measurements with a superconducting quantum interference device confirm a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition around 110, 121, 150, 160, and 178 K for x=0.15, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5, respectively. Four probe resistivity measurements at low temperatures show a monotonic increase for x=0.15 which represents a ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) phase. For Nd0.8Pb0.2MnO3 there is a slope change present in the resistivity profile at 127 K where metal to insulator transition (MI) sets in. For x=0.3 this MI transition is more prominent. However, both these samples have FMI phase at low temperature. When the concentration of lead increases (x>0.3) the sample displays a clear insulator to metal transition with a low temperature ferromagnetic metallic phase. On the basis of these measurements we have predicted the phase diagram of Nd1−xPbxMnO3. Magnetization measurements by a vibration sample magnetometer point out the appreciable differences between zero field cooled and field cooled profiles below the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature for all x. These are indicative of magnetic frustration.

The critical behaviour has been investigated in single crystalline Nd0.6Pb0.4MnO3 near the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC) by static magnetic measurements. The values of TC and the critical exponents β, γ and δ are estimated by analysing the data in the critical region. The exponent values are very close to those expected for 3D Heisenberg ferromagnets with short-range interactions. Specific heat measurements show a broad cusp at TC (i.e., exponent α<0) being consistent with Heisenberg-like behaviour.

The composites consisting of amorphous matrix reinforced with crystalline dendrites offer extraordinary combinations of strength, stiffness, and toughness and can be processed in bulk. Hence, they have been receiving intense research interest, with a primary focus to study their mechanical properties. In this paper, the temperature and strain rate effects on the uniaxial compression response of a tailored bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite has been investigated. Experimental results show that at temperatures ranging between ambient to 500 K and at all strain rates; the onset of plastic deformation in the composite is controlled by that in the dendrites. As the temperature is increased to the glass transition temperature of the matrix and beyond, flow in the amorphous matrix occurs readily and hence it dictates the composite's response. The role of the constituent phases in controlling the deformation mechanism of the composite has been verified by assessing the strain rate sensitivity and the activation volume for deformation. The composite is rate sensitive at room temperature with values of strain rate sensitivity and activation volume being similar to that of the dendrites. At test temperatures near to the glass transition temperature, the composite however becomes rate-insensitive corresponding to that of the matrix phase. At low strain rates, serrated flow akin to that of dynamic strain ageing in crystalline alloys was observed and the serration magnitude decreases with increasing temperature. Initiation of the shear bands at the dendrite/matrix interface and propagation of them through the matrix ligaments until their arrest at another interface is the responsible mechanism for this. Dielectric measurements carried out on drop casted from solution of emeraldine base form of polyaniline films in the temperature range 30-300 degrees C revealed occurrence of two maxima in the loss tangent as a function of temperature. The activation energies corresponding to these two relaxation processes were found to be similar to 0.5 eV and similar to 1.5 eV. The occurrence of one relaxation peak in the dispersion curve of the imaginary part of the electric modulus suggests the absence of microphase separation in the film. Thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopic measurements showed that the films retained its integrity up to 300 degrees C. The dielectric relaxation at higher temperatures with large activation energy of 1.5 eV is attributed to increase in the barrier potential due to decrease in the polymer conjugation as a result of wide amplitude motion of the chain segments well above the glass transition temperature. Systematic measurements pertinent to the magnetocaloric effect and nature of magnetic transition around the transition temperature are performed in the 10 nm Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 nanoparticles (PCMO10). Maxwell's relation is employed to estimate the change in magnetic entropy. At Curie temperature (T-C) similar to 83.5 K, the change in magnetic entropy (-Delta S-M) discloses a typical variation with a value 0.57 J/kg K, and is found to be magnetic field dependent. From the area under the curve (Delta S vs T), the refrigeration capacity is calculated at T-C similar to 83.5K and it is found to be 7.01 J/kg. Arrott plots infer that due to the competition between the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic interactions, the magnetic phase transition in PCMO10 is broadly spread over both in temperature as well as magnetic field coordinates. Upon tuning the particle size, size distribution, morphology, and relative fraction of magnetic phases, it may be possible to enhance the magnetocalorific effect further in PCMO10.
