Nanocrystalline Zn1-xMnxS films (x=0.04, 0.08 and 0.12) were deposited on glass substrates at 400 K using a simple resistive thermal evaporation technique. All the deposited films were characterized by chemical, structural, morphological, optical and magnetic properties. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy studies showed that all the films investigated were in nanocrystalline form with the grain size lying in the range 10–20 nm. All the films exhibited cubic structure and the lattice parameters increase linearly with composition. The absorption edge shifted from the higher-wavelength region to lower wavelengths with increase in Mn concentration. The magnetization increased sharply with increase of the Mn content up to x=0.08 and then decreased with further increase of the Mn content. Particularly, Zn0.92Mn0.08S concentration samples show a weak ferromagnetic nature, which might be the optimum concentration for optoelectronic and spintronic device applications.

The vapor phase hydrochlorination of methanol to methyl chloride in fixed beds with silica gel-alumina (88 to 12) and γ-alumina catalysts was studied in a glass tubular reactor in the temperature range of 300° to 390°C. Of the two catalysts studied, γ-alumina gave nearly equilibrium conversions under the experimental conditions. The data are expressed in the form of second-order irreversible rate equations for both the catalysts studied.

Transparent glasses of various compositions in the system (100 -x)(Li2B4O7)-x(Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30) (5 <= x <= 20, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as-quenched samples was established by differential thermal analyses (DTA). X-ray powder diffraction studies confirmed the as-quenched glasses to be amorphous and the heat-treated to be nanocrystalline. Controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses at 500 degrees C for 8 h yielded nanocrystallites embedded in the glass matrix. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) of these samples established the size of the crystallites to be in the nano-range and confirmed the phase to be that of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 (BLTN) which was, initially, identified by X-ray powder diffraction. The frequency, temperature and compositional dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the glasses and glass nanocrystal composites were investigated in the 100 Hz to 10 MHz frequency range. Electrical relaxations were analyzed using the electric modulus formalisms. The imaginary part of electric modulus spectra was modeled using an approximate solution of Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts relation. The frequency dependent electrical conductivity was rationalized using Jonscher's power law. The activation energy associated with the dc conductivity was ascribed to the motion of Li+ ions in the glass matrix. The activation energy associated with dielectric relaxation was almost equal to that of the dc conductivity, indicating that the same species took part in both the processes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. An expression derived for the free energy of mixing of a divalent basic oxide (MO) with SiO2 based on a model of silicate structure, takes into account the distribution of O2- (from MO) into the silica network, the mixing of silicate ions with O2- and the enthalpy of mixing. The resulting expression is ΔGmix=RT{N11n (2N1-N)2/4N1(1-N)+N21n N 2-N/1-N}, where N={(β+N1)-√(β+N 1)2-8βN1N2}/2β β=characteristic constant for the system N1=mol fraction of silica N2=mol fraction of MO. For the proper choice of β, calculated values of the activity of MO for the system PbO-SiO2, MnO-SiO2, FeO-SiO2 and CaO-SiO2 are in good agreement with experiment. The model predicts that the activity of the basic oxide decreases with increase in temperature.

Seawater aging response was investigated in marine-grade glass/epoxy, glass/vinyl ester, carbon/epoxy and carbon/vinyl ester composites with respect to water uptake, interlaminar shear strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, and tensile fracture surface observations. The reduction of mechanical properties was found to be higher in them initial stages which showed saturation in the longer durations of seawater immersion. The flexural strength and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) dropped by about 35% and 27% for glass/epoxy, 22% and 15% for glass/vinyl ester, 48% and 34% for carbon/epoxy 28%, and 21% carbon/vinyl ester composites respectively. The water uptake behavior of epoxy-based composites was inferior to that of the vinyl system.

The stress-optic coefficient (n3/2)(q11-q12) has been determined for a series of 18 optical glasses of different compositions in the wavelength range 5700-3200 Å. The coefficients are negative for all the glasses except for a high-lead-content glass of density 6·7 and refractive index 1·89. The numerical value of the coefficient decreases as one proceeds to the ultraviolet. This behaviour is just the opposite of what is observed in fused silica. By applying Mueller's theory, the strain polarizability constant and its dispersion have been evaluated.

With the use of the quartz fiber spring balance, sorptions and desorptions of water on silica gel at 30°C were studied and the permanent and reproducible hysteresis loop was obtained. At different points on the desorption curve forming the loop, the gel was subjected to high tension glow electric discharge. As a result of the electric discharge, the gel at any point on the desorption curve shifts to a corresponding point on the sorption curve. This is due to the release from the cavities of gel of the entrapped water held in a metastable state. The electric discharge has no effect on the gel at different points on portions of the desorption curve which coincide with the sorption curve and also on the sorption curve itself, indicating the absence of entrapped water in the gel in these regions. The results afford direct experimental evidence of the reality of the cavity theory of sorption-desorption hysteresis.

TiO2 thin films have been deposited on glass and indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates by sol-gel technique. the influence of annealing temperature on the structural , morphological and optical properties has been examined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal the amorphous nature of the as-deposited film whereas the annealed films are found to be in the crystalline anatase phase. The surface morphology of the films at different annealing temperatures has been examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The in situ surface morphology of the as-deposited and annealed TiO2 films has also been examined by optical polaromicrograph (OPM). TiO2 films infatuated different structural and surface features with variation of annealing temperature. The optical studies on these films suggest their possible usage in sun-shielding applications.

Optically clear glasses of various compositions in the system (100-x)Li2B4O7 center dot x(Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30) (5 <= x <= 20, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. Controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses at 500 degrees C for 8 h yielded nanocrystallites embedded in the glass matrix. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) of these samples established the composition of the nano-crystallites to be that of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30. B-11 NMR studies revealed the transformation of BO4 structural units into BO3 units owing to the increase in TiO6 and NbO6 structural units as the composition of Ba5Li2Ti2Nb8O30 increased in the glass. This, in turn, resulted in an increase in the density of the glasses. The influence of the nominal composition of the glasses and glass nanocrystal composites on optical band gap (E-opt), Urbach energy (Delta E), refractive index (n), molar refraction (R-m), optical polarizability (alpha(m)) and third order non-linear optical susceptibility (chi(3)) were studied.

The growth of characteristic length scales associated with dynamic heterogeneity in glass-forming liquids is investigated in an extensive computational study of a four-point, time-dependent structure factor defined from spatial correlations of mobility, for a model liquid for system sizes extending up to 351 232 particles, in constant-energy and constant-temperature ensembles. Our estimates for dynamic correlation lengths and susceptibilities are consistent with previous results from finite size scaling. We find scaling exponents that are inconsistent with predictions from inhomogeneous mode coupling theory and a recent simulation confirmation of these predictions.

Two series of glasses were prepared, xNa2O, yZnO, 100 - x - yB2O3 and 30 - xNa2O, xZnO, 70B2O3 (mol%). The temperature dependence of the direct current resistivity was measured from room temperature to about 700 K and in both series of glasses we observed a simple Arrhenius type of temperature dependence. However, the resistivity of the binary alkali glass increased steeply by as much as two orders of magnitude with the addition of even a small quantity of ZnO and remained virtually unaffected by further addition of ZnO. The resistivity decreases gradually with increasing pressure in Na2O-B2O3 but increases with increasing pressure with the addition of ZnO.

Photoacoustic (PA) technique is used to study glass transition and temperature dependence of thermal diffusivity in AsxTe1-x glasses with 0.25 0.60. PA amplitude goes through a minimum and the phase shows a maximum at glass transition temperature Tg. The variation of thermal diffusivity with temperature shows sharp decrease near Tg. The variation of thermal diffusivity with composition shows maximum at = 0.40 for all temperatures T Tg.

The influences of the amorphous matrix and crystalline dendrite phases on the hardness and elastic moduli of Zr/Ti-based bulk metallic glass matrix composites have been assessed. While the moduli of the composites correspond to those predicted by the rule of mixtures, the hardness of the composites is similar to that of the matrix, suggesting that the plastic flow in the composites under constrained conditions such as indentation is controlled by the flow resistance of the contiguous matrix.
