This study deals with tailoring of the surface morphology, microstructure, and electrochemical properties of Sn thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering with different deposition rates. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy are used to characterize the film surface morphology. Electrochemical properties of Sn thin film are measured and compared by cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge cycle data at a constant current density. Sn thin film fabricated with a higher deposition rate exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 798 mAh g(-1) but reduced to 94 mAh g(-1) at 30th cycle. Film deposited with lower deposition rate delivered 770 mAh g(-1) during 1st cycle with improved capacity retention of 521 mAh g(-1) on 30th cycle. Comparison of electrochemical performances of these films has revealed important distinctions, which are associated with the surface morphology and hence on rate of deposition. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Thyroxine is a naturally occurring human hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Clinical applications of thyroxine to treat several chronic disorders are limited by poor water solubility and instability under physiological conditions. An inclusion complex of levo-thyroxine (l-thyroxine), the active form of the hormone with gamma cyclodextrin (gamma-CD) has been obtained and studied with the aim of improving oral delivery rather than the injection formulation of the sodium salt. In addition to greater patient acceptability, inclusion complexes often improve aqueous solubility and bioavailability, stability, and reduce toxicity of drugs, thus providing enhanced pharmaceutical formulations. Physicochemical characterization of the inclusion complex was carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Intermolecular dipolar interactions for the inclusion complex were also studied using 2 dimensional ROESY experiments. Formation of the inclusion complex between the protons H3 and H5 of cyclodextrin with aromatic protons of thyroxine was confirmed by their dipolar interaction. Molecular modelling was used to understand the basis for the complex formation and predict the formation of other complexes. Interestingly, we found that l-thyroxine forms an inclusion complex only with the larger gamma-CD and not with other available alpha and beta forms.

This short communication reports results of particle agglomeration details of an acoustically levitated nanosilica droplet. The droplet undergoes thermo-physical and morphological changes under external heating load (convective or radiative) forming different solid structures due to particle agglomeration. We report an agglomeration model based on population balance approach coupled with species and energy conservation equations in the liquid phase and compare it with the experimentally observed structure formations using high speed photography. The analysis is able to predict similar spherical bowl shaped morphologies as observed experimentally using scanning electron microscopy and laser induced fluorescence. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Zn doped ternary compounds Cu2ZnxSn1-xSe3 (x = 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075) were prepared by solid state synthesis. The undoped compound showed a monoclinic crystal structure as a major phase, while the doped compounds showed a cubic crystal structure confirmed by powder XRD (X-Ray Diffraction). The surface morphology and elemental composition analysis for all the samples were studied by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EPMA (Electron Probe Micro Analyzer), respectively. SEM micrographs of the hot pressed samples showed the presence of continuous and homogeneous grains confirming sufficient densification. Elemental composition of all the samples revealed an off-stoichiometry, which was determined by EPMA. Transport properties were measured between 324 K and 773 K. The electrical resistivity decreased up to the samples with Zn content x = 0.05 in Cu2ZnxSn1-xSe3, and slightly increased in the sample Cu2Zn0.075Sn0.925Se3. This behavior is consistent with the changes in the carrier concentration confirmed by room temperature Hall coefficient data. Temperature dependent electrical resistivity of all samples showed heavily doped semiconductor behavior. All the samples exhibit positive Seebeck coefficient (S) and Hall coefficient indicating that the majority of the carriers are holes. A linear increase in Seebeck coefficient with increase in temperature indicates the degenerate semiconductor behavior. The total thermal conductivity of the doped samples increased with a higher amount of doping, due to the increase in the carrier contribution. The total and lattice thermal conductivity of all samples showed 1/1 dependence, which points toward the dominance of phonon scattering at high temperatures. The maximum 1/TZF = 0.48 at 773 K was obtained for the sample Cu2SnSe3 due to a low thermal conductivity compared to the doped samples. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

GaN nanorods were grown by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy on intrinsic Si (111) substrates which were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and photoluminescence. The current-voltage characteristics of the GaN nanorods on Si (111) heterojunction were obtained from 138 to 493K which showed the inverted rectification behavior. The I-V characteristics were analyzed in terms of thermionic emission model. The temperature variation of the apparent barrier height and ideality factor along with the non-linearity of the activation energy plot indicated the presence of lateral inhomogeneities in the barrier height. The observed two temperature regimes in Richardson's plot could be well explained by assuming two separate Gaussian distribution of the barrier heights. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

In this work, porous membranes were designed by selectively etching the PEO phase, by water, from a melt-mixed PE/PEO blend. The pure water flux and the resistance across the membrane were systematically evaluated by employing an indigenously developed cross flow membrane setup. Both the phase morphology and the cross sectional morphology of the membranes was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and an attempt was made to correlate the observed morphology with the membrane performance. In order to design antibacterial membranes for water purification, partially reduced graphene oxide (rGO), silver nanoparticles (Ag) and silver nanoparticles decorated with rGO (rGO-Ag) were synthesized and incorporated directly into the blends during melt mixing. The loss of viability of bacterial cells was determined by the colony counting method using E. coli as a model bacterium. SEM images display that the direct contact with the rGO-Ag nanoparticles disrupts the cell membrane. In addition, the rGO-Ag nanoparticles exhibited a synergistic effect with respect to bacterial cell viability in comparison to both rGO and Ag nanoparticles. The possible mechanism associated with the antibacterial activity in the membranes was discussed. This study opens new avenues in designing antibacterial membranes for water purification.

We report a new method for quantitative estimation of graphene layer thicknesses using high contrast imaging of graphene films on insulating substrates with a scanning electron microscope. By detecting the attenuation of secondary electrons emitted from the substrate with an in-column low-energy electron detector, we have achieved very high thickness-dependent contrast that allows quantitative estimation of thickness up to several graphene layers. The nanometer scale spatial resolution of the electron micrographs also allows a simple structural characterization scheme for graphene, which has been applied to identify faults, wrinkles, voids, and patches of multilayer growth in large-area chemical vapor deposited graphene. We have discussed the factors, such as differential surface charging and electron beam induced current, that affect the contrast of graphene images in detail. The nucleation and growth of vanadium oxide nanotubes (VOx-NT) have been followed by a combination of numerous ex situ techniques. long the hydrothermal process. Intermediate solid phases extracted at different reaction times have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, electron spin resonance, and V-K edge :X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. The supernatant vanadate solutions extracted during the hydrothermal treatment have been studied by liquid V-51 NMR and flame. spectroscopy. For short durations of the hydrothermal synthesis, the initial V2O5-surfactant intercalate. is progressively transformed into VOx-NT whose crystallization starts to be detected after a hydrothermal treatment of 24 h. Upon heating from 24 h to 7 days, VOx-NT are obtained in larger amount and with an improved crystallinity. The detection of soluble amines and cyclic metavanadate V4O12](4-) in the supernatant solution along the hydrothermal process suggests that VOx-NT result from a dissolution precipitation mechanism. Metavanadate species V4O12](4-) could behave as molecular precursors in the polymerization reactions leading to VOx-NT.

We report here that the structural origin of an easily reversible Ge15Te83Si2 glass can be a promising candidate for phase change random access memories. In situ Raman scattering studies on Ge15Te83Si2 sample, undertaken during the amorphous set and reset processes, indicate that the degree of disorder in the glass is reduced from off to set state. It is also found that the local structure of the sample under reset condition is similar to that in the amorphous off state. Electron microscopic studies on switched samples indicate the formation of nanometric sized particles of c-SiTe2 structure. ©2009 American Institute of Physics

We have investigated the local electronic properties and the spatially resolved magnetoresistance of a nanostructured film of a colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) material by local conductance mapping (LCMAP) using a variable temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) operating in a magnetic field. The nanostructured thin films (thickness ≈500nm) of the CMR material La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) on quartz substrates were prepared using chemical solution deposition (CSD) process. The CSD grown films were imaged by both STM and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Due to the presence of a large number of grain boundaries (GB's), these films show low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) which increases at lower temperatures. The measurement of spatially resolved electronic properties reveal the extent of variation of the density of states (DOS) at and close to the Fermi level (EF) across the grain boundaries and its role in the electrical resistance of the GB. Measurement of the local conductance maps (LCMAP) as a function of magnetic field as well as temperature reveals that the LFMR occurs at the GB. While it was known that LFMR in CMR films originates from the GB, this is the first investigation that maps the local electronic properties at a GB in a magnetic field and traces the origin of LFMR at the GB.

CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were prepared by solution combustion method. The nanoparticle are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PXRD reveals single phase, cubic spinel structure with Fd (3) over barm (227) space group. SEM micrograph shows the particles are agglomerated and porous in nature. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal g=2.150 and is attributed to super exchange between Fe3+ and Co2+. Magnetization values of CoFe2O4 nanoparticle are lower when compared to the literature values of bulk samples. This can be attributed to the surface spin canting due to large surface-to-volume ratio for a nanoscale system. The variation of dielectric constant, dielectric loss, loss tangent and AC conductivity of as-synthesized nano CoFe2O4 particles at room temperature as a function of frequency has been studied. The magnetic and dielectric properties of the samples show that they are suitable for electronic and biomedical applications.

An electrodeposition based methodology for synthesizing Ni-Cr-Fe nanowires is provided. As-synthesized nanowires were 200 nm in diameter and more than 5 mu m in length. Detailed characterization of the nanowires using electron microscopy technique revealed an amorphous microstructure for the nanowires with uniform distribution of Ni, Fe and Cr atoms. Annealing of the nanowire using the electron beam inside electron microscope resulted in gradual crystallization of amorphous microstructure into a nanocrystalline one which illustrated the potential for microstructural engineering of the nanowires. This work provides a methodology for synthesizing isolated multi-component, high entropy alloy nanoparticles. Wet chemical synthesis technique was used to synthesis NiFeCrCuCo nanoparticles. As synthesized nanoparticles were spherical with an average size of 26.7 +/- 3.3 nm. Average composition of the as-synthesized nanoparticle dispersion was 26 +/- 2 at% Cr, 14 +/- 2 at% Fe, 10 +/- 0.6 at% Co, 25 +/- 0.1 at% Ni and 25 +/- 1.1 at% Cu. Compositional analysis of the nanoparticles conducted using the compositional line profile analysis and compositional mapping on a single nanoparticle level revealed a fairly uniform distribution of all the five component elements within the nanoparticle volume. Electron diffraction analysis clearly revealed that the structure of as-synthesized nanoparticles was face centered cubic. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
