Overconsolidated soils exhibit a bilinear e-log p relationship. During virgin compression, microstructural units form larger stable groups, thereby reducing the operating specific surface and, in turn, net osmotic repulsive forces in the soil. The rebound portion of the e-log p curve is consequently flatter. The generalized relationship for compressibility of uncemented soils in the overconsolidated state has been developed in the form of e/eL = 1.122 = 0.188 log pc - 0.0463 log p in which e/eL is the generalized soil state parameter, pc is the preconsolidation pressure in kPa, p is the effective overburden pressure in kPa, e is the in situ void ratio, and eL is the void ratio corresponding to the liquid limit water content (wLG). This relationship can be usefully employed to predict both the preconsolidation pressure and compressibility responses of overconsolidated uncemented soils.

Solutions of the exact characteristic equations for the title problem derived earlier by an extension of Bolotin's asymptotic method are considered. These solutions, which correspond to flexural modes with frequency factor, R, greater than unity, are expressed in convenient forms for all combinations of clamped, simply supported and free conditions at the remaining pair of parallel edges. As in the case of uniform beams, the eigenvalues in the CC case are found to be equal to those of elastic modes in the FF case provided that the Kirchoff's shear condition at a free edge is replaced by the condition. The flexural modes with frequency factor less than unity are also investigated in detail by introducing a suitable modification in the procedure. When Poisson's ratios are not zero, it is shown that the frequency factor corresponding to the first symmetric mode in the free-free case is less than unity for all values of side ratio and rigidity ratios. In the case of one edge clamped and the other free it is found that modes with frequency factor less than unity exist for certain dimensions of the plate—a fact hitherto unrecognized in the literature.

The classical Rayleigh-Ritz method with simple polynomials as admissible functions has been used for obtaining natural frequencies of transversely vibrating polar orthotropic annular plates. The method in conjunction with transformations introduced in the analysis has been found to be quite effective, particularly for large hole sizes. Estimates of natural frequencies corresponding to modes with one as well as two nodal diameters are obtained for the nine combinations of clamped, simply supported and free edge conditions and for various values of rigidity ratio and hole sizes. Based on the variation of eigenvalue parameter with rigidity ratio, the frequencies of these modes as well as those of axisymmetric modes have been expressed by means of simple formulae in terms of rigidity ratio and the frequencies of corresponding modes in the isotropic case. These formulae have been used in determining the fundamental frequencies of orthotropic plates.

The vibration problems of skew plates with different edge conditions involving simple support and clamping have been considered by using the variational method of Ritz, a double series of beam characteristic functions being employed appropriate to the combination of the edge conditions. Natural frequencies and modes of vibration have been obtained for different combinations of side ratio and skew angle. These detailed studies reveal several interesting features concerning the frequency curves and nodal patterns. The results presented should, in addition, be of considerable value and practical significance in design applications.

Vibrational stability of a large flexible, structurally damped spacecraft subject to large rigid body rotations is analysed modelling the system as an elastic continuum. Using solution of rigid body attitude motion under torque free conditions and modal analysis, the vibrational equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations with time-varying coefficients. Stability analysis is carried out using Floquet theory and Sonin-Polya theorem. The cases of spinning and non-spinning spacecraft idealized as a flexible beam plate undergoing simple structural vibration are analysed in detail. The critical damping required for stabilization is shown to be a function of the spacecraft's inertia ratio and the level of disturbance.

The paper deals with a rational approach to the development of general design criteria for non-dissipative vibration isolation systems. The study covers straight-through springmass systems as well as branched ones with dynamic absorbers. Various design options, such as the addition of another spring-mass pair, replacement of an existing system by one with more spring-mass pairs for the same space and material requirements, provision of one or more dynamic absorbers for the desired frequency range, etc., are investigated quantitatively by means of an algebraic algorithm which enables one to write down straightaway the velocity ratio and hence transmissibility of a linear dynamical system in terms of the constituent parameters.

The simple quasi-steady analysis of the combustion of a liquid fuel droplet in an oxidising atmosphere provides unsatisfactory explanations for several experimental observations. It's prediction of values for the burning constant (K), the flame-to-droplet diameter ratio ( ) and the flame temperature (Tf) have been found to be amgibuous if not completely inaccurate. A critical survey of the literature has led us to a detailed examination of the effects of unsteadiness and variable properties. The work published to date indicates that the gas-phase unsteadiness is relatively short and therefore quite insignificant.A new theoretical analysis based on heat transfer within the droplet is presented here. It shows that the condensed-phase unsteadiness lasts for about 20â??25% of the total burning time. It is concluded that the discrepancies between experimental observations and the predictions of the constant-property quasi-steady analysis cannot be attributed either to gas-phase or condensed-phase unsteadiness. An analytical model of quasi-steady droplet combustion with variable thermodynamic and transport properties and non-unity Lewis numbers will be examined. Further findings reveal a significant improvement in the prediction of combustion parameters, particularly of K, when consideration is given to variations of cp and λ with the temperature and concentrations of several species. Tf is accurately predicted when the required conditions of incomplete combustion or low ( ) at the flame are met. Further refinement through realistic Lewis numbers predicts ( ) meaningfully.

One of the most important applications of adaptive systems is in noise cancellation using adaptive filters. Ln this paper, we propose adaptive noise cancellation schemes for the enhancement of EEG signals in the presence of EOG artifacts. The effect of two reference inputs is studied on simulated as well as recorded EEG signals and it is found that one reference input is enough to get sufficient minimization of EOG artifacts. This has been verified through correlation analysis also. We use signal to noise ratio and linear prediction spectra, along with time plots, for comparing the performance of the proposed schemes for minimizing EOG artifacts from contaminated EEG signals. Results show that the proposed schemes are very effective (especially the one which employs Newton's method) in minimizing the EOG artifacts from contaminated EEG signals.
