Urban growth identification, quantification, knowledge of rate and the trends of growth would help in regional planning for better infrastructure provision in environmentally sound way. This requires analysis of spatial and temporal data, which help in quantifying the trends of growth on spatial scale. Emerging technologies such as Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS) along with Global Positioning System (GPS) help in this regard. Remote sensing aids in the collection of temporal data and GIS helps in spatial analysis. This paper focuses on the analysis of urban growth pattern in the form of either radial or linear sprawl along the Bangalore - Mysore highway. Various GIS base layers such as builtup areas along the highway, road network, village boundary etc. were generated using collateral data such as the Survey of India toposheet, etc. Further, this analysis was complemented with the computation of Shannon's entropy, which helped in identifying prevalent sprawl zone, rate of growth and in delineating potential sprawl locations. The computation Shannon's entropy helped in delineating regions with dispersed and compact growth. This study reveals that the Bangalore North and South taluks contributed mainly to the sprawl with 559% increase in built-up area over a period of 28 years and high degree of dispersion. The Mysore and Srirangapatna region showed 128% change in built-up area and a high potential for sprawl with slightly high dispersion. The degree of sprawl was found to be directly proportional to the distances from the cities.

Analytical solutions for forced well recharge currently in use were initially developed for pumping scenarios and applied for recharge cases assuming that radial flow in the recharge well replicates a mirror image of that in to a pumping well. Moreover these solutions were not extended to multiaquifer systems. Well bore numerical solutions were generally not considering the effect of well bore interaction, which has a significant effect in the case of a recharge well. In the present paper, improved analytical solutions are developed for a well fully penetrating either single or multiaquifers in respect.to of well storage, well loss, and interactions between the individual aquifers through well bore. The solution developed for constant and variable rates of injection and well loss is applied to the experimental data of the Hansol well injection project near the city of Ahmedabad in the Gujarat state in India. The paper also discusses the difference in well hydraulics of recharge and recovery wells.

The flow resistance of an alluvial channel flow is not only affected by the Reynolds number and the roughness conditions but also the Froude number. Froude number is the most basic parameter in the case of the alluvial channel, thus effect of Froude number on resistance to flow should be considered in the formulation of the friction factor, which is not in the case of present available resistance equations. At present, no generally acceptable quantitative description of the effects of the Froude number on hydraulic resistance has been developed. Metamodeling technique, which is particularly useful in modeling a complex processes or where knowledge of the physics is limited, is presented as a tool complimentary to modeling friction factor in alluvial channels. Present work uses, a radial basis metamodel, which is a type of neural network modeling, to find the effect of Froude number on the flow resistance. Based on the experimental data taken from different sources, it has been found that the predicting capability of the present model is on acceptable level. Present work also tries in formulating an empirical equation for resistance in alluvial channel comprising all the three majorm, parameters, namely, roughness parameter, Froude number and Reynolds number. The polyamidoamide (PAMAM) class of dendrimers was one of the first dendrimers synthesized by Tomalia and co-workers at Dow. Since its discovery the PAMAMs have stimulated many discussions on the structure and dynamics of such hyperbranched polymers. Many questions remain open because the huge conformation disorder combined with very similar local symmetries have made it difficult to characterize experimentally at the atomistic level the structure and dynamics of PAMAM dendrimers. The higher generation dendrimers have also been difficult to characterize computationally because of the large size (294852 atoms for generation 11) and the huge number of conformations. To help provide a practical means of atomistic computational studies, we have developed an atomistically informed coarse-grained description for the PAMAM dendrimer. We find that a two-bead per monomer representation retains the accuracy of atomistic simulations for predicting size and conformational complexity, while reducing the degrees of freedom by tenfold. This mesoscale description has allowed us to study the structural properties of PAMAM dendrimer up to generation 11 for time scale of up to several nanoseconds. The gross properties such as the radius of gyration compare very well with those from full atomistic simulation and with available small angle x-ray experiment and small angle neutron scattering data. The radial monomer density shows very similar behavior with those obtained from the fully atomistic simulation. Our approach to deriving the coarse-grain model is general and straightforward to apply to other classes of dendrimers.

This paper proposes the use of empirical modeling techniques for building microarchitecture sensitive models for compiler optimizations. The models we build relate program performance to settings of compiler optimization flags, associated heuristics and key microarchitectural parameters. Unlike traditional analytical modeling methods, this relationship is learned entirely from data obtained by measuring performance at a small number of carefully selected compiler/microarchitecture configurations. We evaluate three different learning techniques in this context viz. linear regression, adaptive regression splines and radial basis function networks. We use the generated models to a) predict program performance at arbitrary compiler/microarchitecture configurations, b) quantify the significance of complex interactions between optimizations and the microarchitecture, and c) efficiently search for'optimal' settings of optimization flags and heuristics for any given microarchitectural configuration. Our evaluation using benchmarks from the SPEC CPU2000 suits suggests that accurate models (< 5% average error in prediction) can be generated using a reasonable number of simulations. We also find that using compiler settings prescribed by a model-based search can improve program performance by as much as 19% (with an average of 9.5%) over highly optimized binaries.

Detailed molecular simulations are carried out to investigate the effect of temperature on orientational order in cubane molecular crystal. We report a transition from an orientationally ordered to an orientationally disordered plastic crystalline phase in the temperature range 425-450 K. This is similar to the experimentally reported transition at 395 K. The nature of this transition is first order and is associated with a 4.8% increase in unit Cell volume that is comparable to the experimentally reported unit cell volume change of 5.4% (Phys. Rev. Lett. 1997, 78, 4938). An orientational order parameter, eta(T), has been defined in terms of average angle of libration of a molecular 3-fold axis and the orientational melting has been characterized by using eta(T). The orientational melting is associated with an anomaly in specific heat at constant pressure (C-p) and compressibility (kappa). The enthalpy of transition and entropy of transition associated with this orientational melting are 20.8 J mol(-1) and 0.046 J mol(-1) K-1, respectively. The structure of crystalline as well as plastic crystalline phases is characterized by using various radial distribution functions and orientational distribution functions. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the plastic crystalline phase is more than twice that of the crystalline phase.

The problem of a two-layer circular cylindrical shell subjected to radial ring loading has been solved theoretically. The solution is developed by uniting the elasticity solution through Love function approach for the inner thick shell with the Flügge shell theory for the thin outer shell. Numerical work has been done with a digital computer for different values of shell geometry parameters and material constants. The general behaviour of the composite shell has been studied in the light of these numerical results.

Numerical work has been done with a digital computer and the results for stress and displacement fields are given for various values of the shell geometry parameters and material constants.

The flow generated by the rotation of a sphere in an infinitely extending fluid has recently been studied by Goldshtik. The corresponding problem for non-Newtonian Reiner-Rivlin fluids has been studied by Datta. Bhatnagar and Rajeswari have studied the secondary flow between two concentric spheres rotating about an axis in the non-Newtonian fluids. This last investigation was further generalised by Rajeswari to include the effects of small radial suction or injection. In Part A of the present investigation, we have studied the secondary flow generated by the slow rotation of a single sphere in non-Newtonian fluid obeying the Rivlin-Ericksen constitutive equation. In Part B, the effects of small suction or injection have been studied which is applied in an arbitrary direction at the surface of the sphere. In the absence of suction or injection, the secondary flow for small values of the visco-elastic parameter is similar to that of Newtonian fluids with inclusion of inertia terms in the Oseen approximation. If this parameter exceeds Kc = 18R/219, whereR is the Reynolds number, the breaking of the flow field takes place into two domains, in one of which the stream lines form closed loops. For still higher values of this parameter, the complete reversal of the sense of the flow takes place. When suction or injection is included, the breaking of the flow persists under certain condition investigated in this paper. When this condition is broken, the breaking of the flow is obliterated.

In this paper, the steady laminar viscous hypersonic flow of an electrically conducting fluid in the region of the stagnation point of an insulating blunt body in the presence of a radial magnetic field is studied by similarity solution approach, taking into account the variation of the product of density and viscosity across the boundary layer. The two coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations are solved simultaneously using Runge-Kutta-Gill method. It has been found that the effect of the variation of the product of density and viscosity on skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number is appreciable. The skin friction coefficient increases but Nusselt number decreases as the magnetic field or the total enthalpy at the wall increases

A method is presented for obtaining lower bound on the carrying capacity of reinforced concrete foundation slab-structures subject to non-uniform contact pressure distributions. Functional approach suggested by Vallance for simply supported square slabs subject to uniform pressure distribution has been extended to simply supported rectangular slabs subject to symmetrical non-uniform pressure distributions. Radial solutions, ideally suited for rotationally symmetric problems, are shown to be adoptable for regular polygonal slabs subject to contact pressure paraboloids with constant edge pressures. The functional approach has been shown to be well suited even when the pressure is varying along the edges.

We propose in experimental method to study the instability of thin unsteady separation bubbles, i.e. of unsteady boundary layers with reverse flow. The unsteady boundary layer is created by controlled temporal and spatial variations of the velocity external to the boundary layer. We present results of the evolution of instability in different temporally varying flows in a shallow angle diffuser. Depending on the extent of reverse flow in the boundary we observe that instability can be spatially localised.

Estimates of natural frequencies corresponding to axisymmetric modes of flexural vibration of polar orthotropic annular plates have been obtained for various combinations of clamped, simply supported and free edge conditions. A coordinate transformation in the radial direction has been used to obtain effective solutions by the classical Rayleigh-Ritz method. The analysis with this transformation has been found to be advantageous in computations, particularly for large hole sizes, over direct analysis. Numerical results have been obtained for various values of hole sizes and rigidity ratio. The eigenvalue parameter has been found to vary more or less linearly with the rigidity ratio. A comparison with the results for isotropic plates has brought out some interesting features.

The radial current density on an MPD arcjet cathode surface is theoretically investigated for five propellants. It is found that excessive current concentration at the upstream end of the cathode occurs in the case of hydrogen. This undesirable effect is traced to the higher electrical conductivity of hydrogen plasma.

In this paper, we present a growing and pruning radial basis function based no-reference (NR) image quality model for JPEG-coded images. The quality of the images are estimated without referring to their original images. The features for predicting the perceived image quality are extracted by considering key human visual sensitivity factors such as edge amplitude, edge length, background activity and background luminance. Image quality estimation involves computation of functional relationship between HVS features and subjective test scores. Here, the problem of quality estimation is transformed to a function approximation problem and solved using GAP-RBF network. GAP-RBF network uses sequential learning algorithm to approximate the functional relationship. The computational complexity and memory requirement are less in GAP-RBF algorithm compared to other batch learning algorithms. Also, the GAP-RBF algorithm finds a compact image quality model and does not require retraining when the new image samples are presented. Experimental results prove that the GAP-RBF image quality model does emulate the mean opinion score (MOS). The subjective test results of the proposed metric are compared with JPEG no-reference image quality index as well as full-reference structural similarity image quality index and it is observed to outperform both.
