Thixocasting requires manufacturing of billets with non-dendritic microstructure. Aluminum alloy A356 billets were produced by rheocasting in a mould placed inside a linear electromagnetic stirrer. Subsequent heat treatment was used to produce a transition from rosette to globular microstructure. The current and the duration of stirring were explored as control parameters. Simultaneous induction heating of the billet during stirring was quantified using experimentally determined thermal profiles. The effect of processing parameters on the dendrite fragmentation was discussed. Corresponding computational modeling of the process was performed using phase-field modeling of alloy solidification in order to gain insight into the process of morphological changes of a solid during this process. A non-isothermal alloy solidification model was used for simulations. The morphological evolution under such imposed thermal cycles was simulated and compared with experimentally determined one. Suitable scaling using the thermosolutal diffusion distances was used to overcome computational difficulties in quantitative comparison at system scale. The results were interpreted in the light of existing theories of microstructure refinement and globularisation.

The structures of TlSr(2−x)LaxCuO(5+δ), with x=0.5, 0.75 and 1, and Tl.5Pb0.5Sr2CuO(5+δ) have been examined with X-ray and neutron powder Rietveld refinement. They are isostructural (P4/mmm) with the corresponding thallium-barium cuprate having one Cu-O layer with Cu3+ ions in octahedral coordination with oxygen (structure type 1201). The influence of cation substitution and disorder on the structure and superconducting properties of these phases have been investigated. La3+ substitution for Sr2+ stabilises the structure and reduces Cu3+, permitting superconductivity, while Pb2+ substitution for Tl3+ only stabilises the structure, without reducing Cu3+.

A minor addition of B to the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, by similar to 0.1 wt pct, reduces its as-cast prior beta grain size by an order of magnitude, whereas higher B content leads to the presence of in situ formed TiB needles in significant amounts. An experimental investigation into the role played by these microstructural modifications on the high-temperature deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V-xB alloys, with x varying between 0 wt pct and 0.55 wt pct, was conducted. Uniaxial compression tests were performed in the temperature range of 1023 K to 1273 K (750 degrees C to 1000 degrees C) and in the strain rate range of 10(-3) to 10(+1) s(-1). True stress-true strain responses of all alloys exhibit flow softening at lower strain rates and oscillations at higher strain rates. The flow softening is aided by the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization through lath globularization in high temperature (1173 K to 1273 K 900 degrees C to 1000 degrees C]) and a lower strain rate (10(-2) to 10(-3) s(-1)) regime. The grain size refinement with the B addition to Ti64, despite being marked, had no significant effect on this. Oscillations in the flow curve at a higher strain rate (10(0) to 10(+1) s(-1)), however, are associated with microstructural instabilities such as bending of laths, breaking of lath boundaries, generation of cavities, and breakage of TiB needles. The presence of TiB needles affected the instability regime. Microstructural evidence suggests that the matrix cavitation is aided by the easy fracture of TiB needles.

The reactions of the complexes [MI2(CO)3-(NCMe)2] (M = Mo, W) with the diphosphazane ligands RN{P(OPh)2}2 (R = Me, Ph) in CH2Cl2 at room temperature afford new seven-coordinated complexes of the type [MI2(CO)3{P(OPh)2}2NR]. The molybdenum complexes are sensitive to air oxidation even in the solid state, whereas the tungsten complexes are more stable in the solid state and in solution. The structure of the tungsten complex [WI2(CO)3{P(OPh)2}2NPh] has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with the space group Pna 2(1), a = 19.372 (2) angstrom, b = 11.511 (1) angstrom, c = 15.581 (1) angstrom, and Z = 4. Full-matrix least-squares refinement with 3548 reflections (I > 2.5-sigma-(I)) led to final R and R(w) values of 0.036 and 0.034, respectively. The complex adopts a slightly distorted pentagonal-bypyramidal geometry rarely observed for such a type of complexes; two phosphorus atoms of the diphosphazane ligand, two iodine atoms, and a carbonyl group occupy the equatorial plane, and the other two carbonyl groups, the apical positions.

The structure of bovine prothrombin fragment 1 has been refined at 2.25 Å resolution using high resolution measurements made with the synchrotron beam at CHESS. The synchrotron data were collected photographically by oscillation methods (R-merge = 0.08). These were combined with lower order diffractometer data for refinement purposes. The structure was refined using restrained least-squares methods with the program PROLSQ to a crystallographic R-value of 0.175. The structure includes 105 water molecules with occupancies of >0·6. The first 35 residues (Ala1-Leu35) of the N-terminal ?-carboxy glutamic acid-domain (Ala1-Cys48) of fragment 1 are disordered as are two carbohydrate chains of Mr ? 5000; the latter two combine to render 40% of the structure disordered. The folding of the kringle of fragment 1 is related to the close intramolecular contact between the inner loop disulfide groups. Half of the conserved sequence of the kringle forms an inner core surrounding these disulfide groups. The remainder of the sequence conservation is associated with the many turns of the main chain. The Pro95 residue of the kringle has a cis conformation and Tyr74 is ordered in fragment 1, although nuclear magnetic resonance studies indicate that the comparable residue of plasminogen kringle 4 has two positions. Surface accessibility calculations indicate that none of the disulfide groups of fragment 1 is accessible to solvent.

The method of structured programming or program development using a top-down, stepwise refinement technique provides a systematic approach for the development of programs of considerable complexity. The aim of this paper is to present the philosophy of structured programming through a case study of a nonnumeric programming task. The problem of converting a well-formed formula in first-order logic into prenex normal form is considered. The program has been coded in the programming language PASCAL and implemented on a DEC-10 system. The program has about 500 lines of code and comprises 11 procedures.

Addition of boron in small quantities to various titanium alloys have shown significant improvement in mechanical behavior of materials. In the present study, electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques have been applied to investigate the deformation microstructure evolution in boron modified two-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The alloy was hot compressed at 750 degrees C up to 50% height reduction at two different strain rates (10(-3) s(-1) and 1 s(-1)). The EBSD analyses indicated significant differences in deformed microstructure of the base alloy and the alloy containing boron. A strong subgrain formation tendency was observed along with inhomogeneous distribution of dislocations inside large a colonies of Ti64. In contrast, a colonies were relatively strain free for Ti64 + B, with more uniform dislocation density distribution. The observed difference is attributed to microstructural modifications viz, grain size refinement and presence of TiB particles at grain boundary produced due to boron addition. The preparation of five different copper(I) complexes [CuSC(=NPh)(OAr)}L(n)]m (1-5) formed by the insertion of PhNCS into the Cu-OAr bond and the crystal structure analyses of three of them have been carried out. A monomeric species 1 (OAr = 2,6-dimethylphenoxide) is formed in the presence of excess PPh3 (n = 2, m = 1) and crystallizes as triclinic crystals with a = 12.419(4) angstrom, b = 13.298(7) angstrom, c = 15.936(3) angstrom, alpha = 67.09(3)-degrees, beta = 81.63(2)-degrees, gamma = 66.54(3)-degrees, V = 2224(2) angstrom3, and Z = 2. The structure was refined by the least-squares method to final R and R(w) values of 0.038 and 0.044, respectively, for 7186 unique reflections. Copper(I) 2,5-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxide results in the formation of a dimeric species 2 in the presence of P(OMe)3 (n = 1, m = 2), where the coordination around Cu is trigonal. Crystals of 2 were found to be orthorhombic with a = 15.691(2) angstrom, b = 18.216(3) angstrom, c = 39.198(5) angstrom, v = 11204(3) angstrom3, and Z = 8. Least-squares refinement gave final residuals of R = 0.05 and R(w) = 0.057 with 6866 unique reflections. A tetrameric species 3 results when PPh3 is replaced by P(OMe)3 in the coordination sphere of copper(I) 2,6-dimethylphenoxide. It crystallizes in the space group P1BAR with a = 11.681 (1) angstrom, b = 13.373(2) angstrom, c = 20.127(1) angstrom, a = 88.55(l)-degrees, beta = 89.65(l)-degrees, gamma = 69.28(1)-degrees, V = 2940(l) angstrom3, and Z = 2. Least-squares refinement of the structure gave final values of 0.043 and 0.05 for R and R(w) respectively using 12214 unique reflections. In addition, a dimeric species 4 is formed when 1 equiv of PPh3 is added to the copper(I) 4-methylphenoxide, while with an excess of PPh3 a monomeric species 5 is isolated. Some interconversions among these complexes are also reported.

Sesbania mosaic virus (SMV) is a plant virus infecting Sesbania grandiflora plants in Andhra Pradesh, India. Amino acid sequence of the tryptic peptides of SMV coat protein were determined using a gas phase sequenator. These sequences showed identical amino acids at 69% of the positions when aligned with the corresponding residues of southern bean mosaic virus (SBMV).Crystals diffracting to better than 3 Å resolution were obtained by precipitating the virus with ammonium sulphate. The crystals belonged to rhombohedral space group R3 with α = 291·4 Å and α = 61·9°. Three-dimensional X-ray diffraction data on these crystals were collected to a resolution of 4·7 Å, using a Siemens-Nicolet area detector system. Self-rotation function studies revealed the icosahedral symmetry of the virus particles, as well as their precise orientation in the unit cell. Cross-rotation function and modelling studies with SBMV showed that it is a valid starting model for SMV structure determination. Low resolution phases computed using a polyalanine model of SBMV were subjected to refinement and extension by real-space electron density averaging and solvent flattening. The final electron density map revealed a polypeptide fold similar to SBMV. The single disulphide bridge of SBMV coat protein is retained in SMV. Four icosahedrally independent cation binding sites have been tentatively identified. Three of these sites, related by a quasi threefold axis, are also found in SBMV. The fourth site is situated on the quasi threefold axis. Aspartic acid residues, which replace Ile218 of SBMV from the quasi threefold-related subunits are suitable ligands to the cation at this site

X-ray diffraction line profile analysis (XRDLPA) techniques have been applied to investigate the deformed microstructure of a recently developed boron modified two-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The alloy was hot compressed at 750 degrees C up to 50% height reduction at two different strain rates (10(-3) S-1 and 1 S-1). Microstructural parameters like average domain size, average microstrain within the domain and dislocation density of the two phases were determined using X-ray diffraction line profile analysis. The results indicate an increase in the microstrain and dislocation density for the alpha-phase and decrease for the beta-phase in the case of boron modified alloys as compared to the normal material. Microstructural modifications viz, the grain refinement and the presence of hard, brittle TiB particles in the case of boron modified alloy are held responsible for the observed difference in the dislocation density. Monophasic CaNaBi2Nb3O12 powders were synthesized via the conventional solid-state reaction route. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) data and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) studies confirmed the phase to be a three-layer Aurivillius oxide associated with an orthorhombic B2cb space group. The dielectric properties of the ceramics have been studied in the 300-800 K temperature range at various frequencies (1 kHz to 1 MHz). A dielectric anomaly was observed at 676 K for all the frequencies corresponding to the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition as it was also corroborated by the high temperature X-ray diffraction studies. The incidence of the polarization-electric field (P vs. E) hysteresis loop demonstrated CaNaBi2Nb3O12 to be ferroelectric.

A precise X-ray investigation is carried out to probe the lowest-order anharmonic contribution of the atomic potential of the germanium atom. A total number of 1052 reflections (h + k + l = 4n and 4n +/- 1) are precisely measured at room temperature using a spherical single crystal of germanium and using a Nonius CAD-4 X-ray diffractometer with crystal monochromatized MoKalpha radiation. A least-square refinement program is used to refine the harmonic and anharmonic thermal parameters of the crystal. The refinement gives beta(Ge) = (-0.749 +/- 1.79) x 10-(16) J nm-3 with B(Ge) = (0.528 +/- 0.004) x 10(-2) nm2. The reliability index (R) amounts to 1.71% for germanium.

Nanoscale dispersions of intermetallic Ti2Ni particles in an ordered TiNi intermetallic matrix have been produced by rapid solidification processing of near equiatomic TiNi alloys containing small amount of Si utilising the principle of kinetic competition in the undercooled liquid, A detailed characterisation of the microstructures obtained by different processing conditions was carried out to establish the trend of the refinement of the scale of microstructure. The observed microstructural conditions are rationalised in terms of a metastable phase diagram and the Uhlmann, Chalmers and Jackson theory of the trapping of second phase particles by a moving interface.

In the absence of interlogs, building docking models is a time intensive task, involving generation of a large pool of docking decoys followed by refinement and screening to identify near native docking solutions. This limits the researcher interested in building docking methods with the choice of benchmarking only a limited number of protein complexes. We have created a repository called dockYard (http://pallab.serc.iisc.ernet.in/dockYard), that allows modelers interested in protein-protein interaction to access large volume of information on protein dimers and their interlogs, and also download decoys for their work if they are interested in building modeling methods. dockYard currently offers four categories of docking decoys derived from: Bound (native dimer co-crystallized), Unbound (individual subunits are crystallized, as well as the target dimer), Variants (match the previous two categories in at least one subunit with 100% sequence identity), and Interlogs (match the previous categories in at least one subunit with >= 90% or >= 50% sequence identity). The web service offers options for full or selective download based on search parameters. Our portal also serves as a repository to modelers who may want to share their decoy sets with the community.
